Not many restaurants or diners can proudly say they've been around for 114 years, but G-B Grill can. G-B is family owned and family staffed. When you stop by, you'll have either the son or father waiting on you or preparing your delicious breakfast. Occasionally, momma will come out of the kitchen in back and assist. It is a true family affair. I've only done breakfast and it is top notch. The grill is right behind the counter, so you get to watch your meal being prepared. Their Hash Browns are top notch and I also recommend the pancakes and Biscuits and Gravy. Actually, their entire breakfast menu is a winner. Next on my agenda is to stop by and experience their lunch. It's an easy find on Broadway and there's plenty of parking across the street in a gravel lot. Talk about an old school diner! It feels like you walked into a time capsule, as it's been in the same family since 1910. The same gentleman has been working the grill since 1965! I hit the jackpot with the Vegas omelet, filled with creamy cheese and loaded with onions, pepper, and ham. The service from the family running this place is incredible. Friendly, fun, and engaging-- you can't get better service than this. This 100-year-old diner has a classic feel with counter service and booths with old jukeboxes. The waiter informed me that they only had onions and bell peppers because they are an old 50s diner. I said I want those and he said he would charge me $15 for the addition of two eggs on top of the onions and bell peppers. I told him I didn't want the two eggs and only the vegetables and I would not be willing to pay double the price. He said the only way I would be able to order the ham and cheese omelette with onions and peppers was if I also added two eggs. Oh my stars when I walked into this place I thought I was a time traveler and stepped back into the 1950's. From the juke boxes at your table, to the coin operated telephone to the stools at the counter. The owners greet you as soon as you walk in the door and ask you what you want to drink. The air conditioning was broken the day we came and it was so hot and I was sweating so bad I could barely eat. The only available high chair they had was broken and my son nearly fell through. We've lived in Alton for almost 2 years now and were just able to try this place out. Now I'm sad it's taken me this long! Everything was so good, fresh, cheap with plenty of food! Pancakes tasted ridiculously good, even a little crispness on the edges from the grill. Eggs, hash browns, bacon, toast...everything so good! This mom pop spot gives you the total small town experience. The owners greet you and wait on you. I sat at the counter, about 3 feet from the griddle. I ordered 3 hot cakes and sausage links. This is one of my favorite places in Alton. I mean how many diners are out there that are over 100 years old?! I'm a huge fan of the old school diner/coffee shop, with the lunch counter, stools and griddle right behind the counter. Places like this are a dying breed. I just hope when John and his wife retire, someone steps in and keeps it going. Unfortunately my wife has already put the kibosh to me buying it. My wife and I ventured over to Alton to meet a potter we had commissioned some work with and since we were early, I checked Yelp to see what was around us. I saw the G-B Grill so we thought we would give it a shot. When we walked in it was as if we stepped backin time, and I mean that in the very best way. The counter was packed and the owners were the ones working. I ordered the Gyro plate and it was absolutely fantastic! I guess I looked hungry because after I polished it off in record time, the owner came over and put another pile of meat on my plate and told me to eat! If you have a chance to try this little place, by all means do! It's a real treat and judging from what the regulars were ordering, the specials are pretty amazing. read more

This is about as good as it gets! Unassuming place right on the side of the highway, and if you weren't looking for it, you might miss it. But don't miss it. Go in. Enjoy taking a step back in time, watching your food made from where you sit, chatting it up with the locals and owner, and of course eating the delicious food. I can't say enough about this place. We went with my wife's folks, who were in town to visit the grandkids. The owner, his wife, and friends behind the counter all talked to us and made it a special experience for our kids. Jim even gave our two oldest kids 2 airheads before we left, and in the spirit of days gone by, told me "bring it in next time" when I didn't have cash when it was time to pay. (I settled up thanks to a nearby ATM, but still- that's pretty awesome!) Jim's friend also took time to explain about the history of the place, details about the soda fountain, and plenty of other interesting stuff. Who does that anymore? These guys do, and it's a big reason while we'll be back many times: old-time service, food, and hospitality. Eating at this place made me feel like I was born in the wrong decade...technology and modern life have been wonderful in many ways, but it also makes me wonder how many things we have lost or given up along the way. So being from Alton Illinois and being Greek myself I have to write this review. All I can say is this place is great. When my friends and I aren't away at school.... you can usually find us here. And yes, when you step into GB grill you will realize that it has not been renovated since the 50s but the food is still as good as back then. So when you get the chance, stop in and say hi to Jim and Joanne. And if you can TRY THE BREAKFAST. Jimmy makes the BEST omelettes. Stepping into this place is like taking a ride in a DeLorean and traveling back to 1950. Take a seat at the counter or in a booth and mom and pop will come take your order. You can tell their clientele is mainly regulars, and you feel like family by the end of your visit. This is the type of place that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside even before you lift your fork. I watched as Pop greeted everyone by their first name when they walked in the door, seeing as they were a Greek family and I love Gyros, I ordered that. It's was great and authentic and will definitely be going back for another! I noticed many people had the special which was roast pork, it looks comforting as well. We drove around Alton on a Saturday morning look for a good Bfast joint...we found GB Grill. Turns out the cutest greek couple in the world own it. Now if you are expecting to be completely catered to, don't come here (like my mother who was with us) this may not be your kind of place. They have what they have, and that is that. This tiny diner is easy to overlook when driving past but is defiantly worth stopping. I stopped by one afternoon while I was working in the area and discovered that this place makes a damn good hamburger.
