Not many restaurants or diners can proudly say they've been around for 114 years, but G-B Grill can. G-B is family owned and family staffed. When you stop by, you'll have either the son or father waiting on you or preparing your delicious breakfast. Occasionally, momma will come out of the kitchen in back and assist. It is a true family affair. I've only done breakfast and it is top notch. The grill is right behind the counter, so you get to watch your meal being prepared. Their Hash Browns are top notch and I also recommend the pancakes and Biscuits and Gravy. Actually, their entire breakfast menu is a winner. Next on my agenda is to stop by and experience their lunch. It's an easy find on Broadway and there's plenty of parking across the street in a gravel lot. I recommend you go give them a try, you'll be glad that you did.

Talk about an old school diner! It feels like you walked into a time capsule, as it's been in the same family since 1910. The same gentleman has been working the grill since 1965! The food is made in house, and is incredibly yummy! Definitely worth the trip, but bring cash as they don't take cards. ATM available.

Get the sausage links; they are seasoned perfectly, using the same recipe the family has used for over 100 years. I hit the jackpot with the Vegas omelet, filled with creamy cheese and loaded with onions, pepper, and ham. The service from the family running this place is incredible. Friendly, fun, and engaging-- you can't get better service than this. This 100-year-old diner has a classic feel with counter service and booths with old jukeboxes. I can't believe I didn't know about this gem, but I plan to make up for lost time with frequent visits.

Nice guy cooking up my meal on the grill across from my table. Eggs toast bacon hash browns Hot and fresh ! I'll be back if happen to be in the area. Lunch looks good too. Menu on the top wall above his grill station. Old tyme grill place! Greek baby!

I attempted to order a ham and cheese omelette with all of the vegetables they had in the back if possible. The waiter informed me that they only had onions and bell peppers because they are an old 50s diner. I said I want those and he said he would charge me $15 for the addition of two eggs on top of the onions and bell peppers. I told him I didn't want the two eggs and only the vegetables and I would not be willing to pay double the price. He said the only way I would be able to order the ham and cheese omelette with onions and peppers was if I also added two eggs. I ended up not ordering anything because I refused the additional portion size. The original price is 7.25.

Oh my stars when I walked into this place I thought I was a time traveler and stepped back into the 1950's. From the juke boxes at your table, to the coin operated telephone to the stools at the counter. The owners greet you as soon as you walk in the door and ask you what you want to drink. If you don't shout it out they ask again. My goodness. Next its time to order, you better know what you want or you will get something. We ordered the Gyro's, I mean it is a greek restaurant and when in Greece... Best damn gyro ever. The owner stood behind the counter and asked all kinds of personal questions and yes he expected you to answer. It was awesome.

We've lived in Alton for almost 2 years now and were just able to try this place out. Now I'm sad it's taken me this long! Everything was so good, fresh, cheap with plenty of food! Pancakes tasted ridiculously good, even a little crispness on the edges from the grill. Eggs, hash browns, bacon, toast...everything so good! And the atmosphere is great, definitely reminds you of old school diners. The owner is also the cook, waiter, and cashier, for his age that's awesome. They were all really friendly and seeing the people that come in and the owner knowing them by first name just puts a smile to my face :-).

Got there and got a little concerned the parking lot only had a couple of cars. While I was finishing my phone call, I saw several people walking out with carry-out. I went in, the sign said to seat yourself, so I slid into one of the booths. There were several tables filled with diners. My waitress arrived at the booth quickly and gave me a menu. I ordered coffee and asked to have time to glance over the menu. I knew what I wanted, but it was a new menu since my last visit and I was curious if there was anything new. It pretty much the same, but the new one looks way better. I went with the, Pancake Combo. It includes two of each; pancakes, eggs, bacon and sausage links. The pancakes were huge and fluffy. I think they are some of the best pancakes served at local diners. My eggs were prepared hard and I requested the yolk to be broken. I then added some of their house branded hot sauce for an extra kick. The bacon and sausage were just, okay. They were cold, it was obvious both had been made ahead of time. It would have been a great breakfast if they were fried fresh. Now the explanation of the seeing the carry-outs. While I dined I saw the different waitresses place bags on a rack next to the door. After they placed a bag, shortly thereafter a person would come in and grab it and go. Seeing this tells me, they do some serious Grub-Hub business. The service was good my waitress was attentive and I loved her funky glasses. Dining room was clean and looks like it had a facelift since my last visit and it's looking good.

Though on the day we ate there, it was 6 of us in the party, when three of us ordered burgers w/Fries, one person a Slinger and 2 of us the Steak and eggs breakfast. We arrived there at 11:10 and got served our meals at 1:10. Sooo you could imagine, it was a bit of a wait. Mind you the place closed at 2pm. I did grab a bag of their day-old donuts and a cherry pie on the way out, which were exceptional, but the wait. It's hard to want to come back to wait 2 hours for your meals. Though the staff was kind, and the restaurant is small and quaint, (about 12 tables?), and offers donuts and pie. We didn't expect fine quality steaks either, but what we had were overcooked and chewy, so don't order those, but the burgers and slinger seemed good enough. Mind you this is like a little country kitchen close to Grafton. It's meant to be a place to grab a sandwich with a cup of Joe, and meet up with local friends. So if you don't mind the wait, and in the neighborhood for a coffee and donuts, it's your place.

Just looking at the menu you'll think "ok, typical greasy spoon type place ". But they are much better than that and do take pride in what would appear to basic diner fare. And the buffalo sauce brought just the right amount of heat. I couldn't put the thing down. But the star of the show was the onion rings. These are probably the best I've had and it'll probably be years before I have better. Perfect light and crispy, the right crunch, and the tender onion makes a clean break with every bite! You know what I'm talking about--when the rest of the onion wants to slide out of the rest of the ring? Atmosphere is charming and fits what you'd expect for this kind of establishment.
