Water coffee, stale bagels, cold food and rude staff. Would not recommend this place to anyone. Go get something yummy in the morning.

    Breakfast burrito

Cozy, cute, great coffee, big food menu and lots of seating. Lots to love at this cafe. Higher Grounds was around the corner from our hotel so it popped up right away on our Yelp hunt for coffee spots. We went in for just a couple coffees but ended up staying and splitting a breakfast burrito. It was delicious and DENSE. I am not kidding around, this was a big burrito. The space is adorable, with a little store in front and more of a cafe with tables, art on the walls and lots of big windows just around back. A great place for a grab and go or to stay a bit.

    Salmon Platter
    Elaine L.

Great spot for breakfast! My hubby and I ordered the Salmon Platter for 2 and my daughter ordered the banana Nutella waffles. Both were AMAZING! The salmon Platter had a very generous serving of cream cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onion, capers, and plenty of salmon. The bagels were fluffy, not hard at all, they tasted very fresh. I took a bite of my daughter's waffles. So delicious. It came with a side of what tasted like fresh whipped cream and NY maple syrup. I also loved how local, quaint and charming their coffee shop is. It had beautiful art work all for sale and fun hand made crafts and soaps for sale.

It wasn't too busy when we arrived in middle of the afternoon, and we were warmly greeted. You place your order at the counter and then seat yourself. Water and cups are out too. I went with the Pad Thai ($27 with chicken) and also got to try some of the fried chicken ($17), a special. Prices seemed a little high but the dishes were delicious, with portions being reasonable and the Pad Thai not being overwhelmingly sweet. The fried chicken was magically crunchy outside and moist inside, with an irresistible dipping sauce not too cilantro-y. The Windham Local has a parking lot off to the side, but there was ample street parking too. And a shop proprietor later told us that The Windham Local is her place to eat in town!

Coffees were delicious and strong and the breakfast burrito was truly the best breakfast burrito I think I've ever had. The space is so cute. I read on their website while planning the weekend that they are open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and have live music on the weekends. It looks like they do it all. We stopped in early and had our choice of tables. The space is big, clean and perfectly calm. Great spot for a slow breakfast. After ordering at the counter, they brought everything over to our table. I got the oatmeal bowl. Delicious and simple. However, I couldn't help but steal many many bites of the breakfast burrito. Seriously, get it! A great spot with good food, a friendly team and a cozy vibe.

But it's much more than a store; its also a restaurant, there is even a playground, a small maple syrup museum, and even a few farm animals. There were a couple of cats roaming around the perimeter, and luckily I was able to sneak in a few pets. As for the restaurant - the portions are gigantic, and everything is cooked fresh with organic, non GMO ingredients. My group ordered breakfast, while I wanted to get something from the lunch menu. I ended up getting a Philly sandwich. It was cheesy, smothered with onions, with tender beef, and served on a toasty bread. I devoured this sandwich. One piece of advice - If you visit on the weekend, be prepared to wait, because this place gets slammed.

There is also a dining area, ice cream, coffee bar, and even a farm out back with animals you can go look at and a teeny, tiny maple museum that's worth peaking your head in. They are rude, unfriendly, skip phrases like welcome and thank you. I was not asked if I liked my stay, and it was clear that charging my credit card was the highest priority... I have no problems paying my bills and they just seemed to make this a confrontational issue for no reason!!! 2: I made my reservation though Priceline.com using my American Express card. The hotel staff called my "work number" instead of my cell number to inform me that they were going to refuse to charge my American Express card after my reservation was confirmed on Priceline.com. Luckily I called the hotel to verify my reservation and the hotel staff then demanded another card from me with no apology stating they they "do not accept American Express". Obviously this hotel is not in compliance with Priceline policy and is violating their agreement. I will take this up with Priceline as well! 3: if you like killing flies in your room in the middle of winter you will love your room! We arrived around 7:45 p.m., ordered drinks, and then waited an entire hour before receiving our appetizer--after the restaurant had mostly emptied out. The "nachos" were nothing more than broken tortilla chips topped with vegetarian chili and a few jalapeños. There was virtually no cheese, and I had to ask for sour cream. To make matters worse, they were served with paper plates. During that entire hour, our waitress never once checked on us. She never apologized for the wait, never refilled our drinks, and never asked if we needed anything. We honestly thought our order had been forgotten. The atmosphere wasn't much better. We heard other tables complaining, glasses crashing to the floor, and the entire evening felt like we were on a prank show. By 9:15 p.m.--an hour and a half after arriving--we still hadn't received our entrees, which were simply a grilled chicken salad, chicken fingers with fries, and a kielbasa dinner. I can't comment on the food because we never got it. At 9:20 p.m., I politely got up and asked our waitress how much longer it would be. Without even looking up, she snapped, "She's working on it." No apology. No explanation. Just attitude. At that point, we'd had enough. I asked for the check for our drinks and appetizer so we could leave. She stormed away. When she returned, she dropped the check on our table--which still hadn't been cleared from the appetizer--and walked away. When I asked her what her name was, she ignored me completely. I then asked the blonde bartender for the waitress's name. She first told me it was Paula, then quickly corrected herself and said, "Oh wait, it's actually Jess," once she realized why I was asking, so I'm still not sure which is correct. The waitress appeared to be a heavy-set woman in her late 30s or early 40s with brown hair pulled back in a ponytail, which should help management identify who waited on our table. Before we left, we overheard the bartender telling two guests that there was only one server and one bartender working, another employee had been called in too late to make a difference, and the cook on duty wasn't the strongest, which was why the kitchen was so slow. While I understand that staffing shortages happen, none of this was ever communicated to us. A simple explanation and apology would have gone a long way. I paid the bill and left. We have a vacation home just 15 minutes away and dine in the area often. Unfortunately, after this experience, we will never return. Between the excessive wait, poor communication, rude service, and disappointing food, this was easily one of the worst restaurant experiences we've had.
