Higher Grounds was around the corner from our hotel so it popped up right away on our Yelp hunt for coffee spots. We went in for just a couple coffees but ended up staying and splitting a breakfast burrito. It was delicious and DENSE. I am not kidding around, this was a big burrito. The space is adorable, with a little store in front and more of a cafe with tables, art on the walls and lots of big windows just around back. Great spot for breakfast! My hubby and I ordered the Salmon Platter for 2 and my daughter ordered the banana Nutella waffles. Both were AMAZING! The salmon Platter had a very generous serving of cream cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onion, capers, and plenty of salmon. The bagels were fluffy, not hard at all, they tasted very fresh. I took a bite of my daughter's waffles. So delicious. It came with a side of what tasted like fresh whipped cream and NY maple syrup. I also loved how local, quaint and charming their coffee shop is. We visited three times on our recent trip to Windham. The first two times the bagels and coffee were fine. Service was slooooow but the girls behind the counter were friendly. We had the weirdest experience this morning, trying to get bagels before hitting the road. At around 10 AM the two employees working had into an altercation that blew up into a full-blown fight, causing one to storm out of the shop while the other went to sulk in the back room. After we had already ordered and paid for our bagels. He left us, including my 77-year old father-in-law, standing there for over 20 minutes, just trying to get a refund or some bagels. Super strange and obviously incredibly unprofessional. Won't be back. read more

We walked in at 12:45 PM to get 2 sandwiches and 2 coffees. We waited 45 minutes after ordering because we thought that there might have been a wait due to the lunch rush. However when we finally went to ask when we were getting our food, they hadn't even started it; they had just forgotten about our order and started on it when we asked. We received our order at 1:50 PM. Nice spot for coffee and breakfast before a big hiking day. Pastries looked delish but I didn't try. I did have the egg white wrap which was huge and filling and delish and kept me energized for a lot of challenging hiking. My friend had the avocado toast - huge portion and super fresh. We were both very pleased! They also sell a variety of cute and fun stuff, and there's lots of artwork (local I assume) - worth looking around. My only complaint was service. They were medium busy, not terrible, But could not seem to keep up. The avocado toast with eggs was very good. The Goddess was a bit disappointing. Not much taste. But not terrible. Definitely better with hot sauce and needed some other spices. Coffee is pretty good. Loved the Sport Tea. But the real killer was the ridiculous wait to get our food. The woman said 250-30 minutes. We waited over an hour for the two items. Great spot to pickup coffee and a quick bite in Windham. They have a walk up window so you can get your coffee, breakfast or ice cream and maintain social distance. They also have a few picnic tables outside or you can take your food back to your car. They are open daily which is particularly helpful on Mondays and Tuesdays when not everything around is open. read more

I rarely provide a 1 star review but there have been too many issues to ignore. In the last three visits, the food has been sub-par and the no matter how many people are working behind the counter, there will certainly be a wait (even if you're the only customers). Today, wasn't different than anything else, except much more infuriating. On our way to go to the downhill bike shop, we decided to grab a "quick" bite. My husband and our friend all decided that we would order things that typically take a few seconds to prepare: 3 iced coffees, toasted bagel with cream cheese, yogurt parfait and a small oatmeal. BIG, BIG MISTAKE. Iced coffees took 10 full minutes to bring out- why? I have no idea since, you know, IT'S ICED COFFEE. After waiting 15 minutes I decided to ask about the food- the cashier said something along the lines that it's busy and to sit tight. ITS A CUP OF OATMEAL A PREMADE YOGURT CUP AND A BAGEL THAT NEEDS TO BE TOASTED- are you kidding?? We waiting a full 25 minutes, to find that 1- the bagel is for ants 2- the toasted bagel was cold because they let it sit on the counter without letting us know 3- the yogurt wasn't hand churned (you would assume for the length of time we waiting) and the sides of "granola and coconut" were in the small side containers that you see Jell-O shots or ketchup in. Oatmeal was the wrong side and I hate to waste food but I won't count that against them. The coffee was weak, the food was wack and honestly you're better off going ANYWHERE but here. I've come here too many times with the same outcomes that there's no sense to it anymore. P.s- how hard would it be for the cashier to physically turn around and ask about the three simplest items instead of pointing to the "busy"day. Where do I start? Do not expect any hot food after 3PM. My experience in this place was just weird. I walked in at 4PM to order a caprese sandwich and the young girl working there alerted me that they already shut the grill off and can't make any hot foods. I asked what time they close and what time they shut the grill off. They close at 6PM she said, and they shut the grill off at 3PM because there are only two employees that close the shop and "its just hard". Ok, thats strange. There is nothing stated on the menu that says anything about half the menu not being available after 3PM. So, I ordered a Higher Ground BLT which comes with avocado on sourdough. I was told that they don't have sourdough and never did (its all over the menu). Then, I received my $9 sandwich with no tomato and no avocado. Thats like half the sandwich! Opted not to make things difficult and didn't even say anything as the girls working behind the counter were very sweet. Finally, we ate lunch by our car (over $30) and went in to throw out the trash (brown paper bag). The owner, Lori, was walking out as I was walking in and reprimanded me for not having a mask on in such a nasty manner (my face was inside my hooded sweatshirt covering my mouth and nose) and then didn't even make an attempt to let me throw out my trash. I asked if there was a garbage outside and again was met with rudeness. Went back to the car to get a mask, returned to the store to throw out the garbage, was met at the door by Lori again and in passing, casually and kindly mentioned that she could have just taken the bag from me at the door, and I wouldn't have even had to come in. At that point she just exploded, screaming at me with profanity. Its just beyond me that people in customer service could be so unprofessional and rude and manage their store so carelessly. Bottom line: run by pleasant young girls but the owner is a bitch that should not be managing a cafe. read more

I was in Windham for the weekend and stopped by Higher Grounds on the way to the slopes. It's a super cute coffee shop with an extensive breakfast and lunch menu - with items ranging from egg sandwiches, omelets, smoothies, sandwiches, salads to all sorts of coffee-base beverages. I ordered a coffee and a vanilla latte. Both were excellent and the service was super friendly. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because during the morning rush hour, they get a bit backed up and it can take upwards of 15 minutes to get your espresso drinks. However, they're a small operation and the quality is great, so it's worth the wait. Can't beat the service with a smile! read more

This location had great reviews and I was excited to come and try it. On a very rainy day, with a completely empty interior, we were told we had to wait outside in the rain to order. But the entire interior is empty? Ok.... So I wait in the rain for my turn. Once I get to the counter I asked how long ago the decaf coffee was made. I was told it was sitting for 2 hours. Mmmm really yummy turkey cranberry sandwich had half for lunch and half for dinner very pleasantly enjoyed, not a crumb left and still with a smile. This is my second try here and both times were a bust. Both times my food was disgusting. In this case I requested chicken salad. There is no mention anywhere that it is a curried chicken salad it arrived greenish brown and was horrible. I literally took one bite and walked right to the trash can and dumped it. You'd think someone would question if something was wrong... not in this case. Not particularly friendly either. When I asked for my ice coffee order I was pointed to a cup of coffee with no ice that had been sitting in a cooler for who knows how long and had to request ice as if this was standard procedure at every coffee house. First of all, I have no idea how this place has 3.5 stars... between their amazing 'egg sandy's' and their gourmet sandwich menu (not to mention their assortment of fabulous baked treats) - I drove my family 30 minutes out of the way just to stop off at Higher Grounds Co. Cheaper, better customer experience and a huge difference for the environment. This coffee shop, once my favorite, has become a dreaded request . Whenever I hear "let's go to Higher Grounds for Chai", I no longer view it as a fun little trip with my girls, something that had become mine and my daughters weekly tradition. We'd take a scenic drive, listen to music, drink our Chai, and stop at a park or the river. Higher Grounds had become the Common Ground for my daughters and myself. Our Chai trips were the rare occasions when everyone got along, and it was the one thing everyone could agree on doing. But now, our "chai" trips have become more of a disappointment and less of a joy. I haven't yet given this business a star rating, as I want to be fair, but am still contemplating my feelings as I write this. I don't want to leave a low star rating simply because of a few bad experiences. When rating a business, people seem to forget that that business is someone's livelihood, and to leave a one star review because of one thing they didn't like, or after one visit to the business, is petty and thoughtless. I have been frequenting Higher Grounds since the original "Higher Grounds". That was several owners ago and well over a decade (maybe two). Flavors have come and gone, employees changed, and the business has passed hands multiple times. I will say, that the original "higher grounds" was by far the best of the three. In my opinion, the original owners who first established the building as a coffee shop, not only had the best flavors (I'm still trying to remember the name of that coffee-chocolate frozen drink that brought me there daily) and the best food, but they also had the best customer service with the friendliest staff. But since I'm not comparing the original shop to the current shop, I'll get to the point of my review. As I first mentioned, our weekly bonding trips to get Chai have gone from something anticipated, to something that leaves everyone disappointed. There were always negatives when it came to this coffee shop: I can complain about the long wait times (sometimes up to twenty minutes just for a cup of coffee), the inconsistency of the chai, the crowded entrance, and their obvious political stance (cant we keep politics out of the places that we go to to escape life for a moment?), and the outrageous prices of the third party vendor products. But I'm not rating this business based on those things. Because in the end, despite the wait, we'd leave with our delicious chai. So what am I rating this business based on? Well, I keep asking myself, "would I recommend it to others? Do I love their products? Do I feel comfortable when I'm waiting in line, or sitting at a table?" But the answers to these questions change by the day, and that is why I currently wouldn't recommend this business. Every week, my daughter's and I visit Higher grounds for our "girl's trips for Chai". Every time there was a different employee, so this is not on one person, rather, it's on the owner or management. Because each visit equals three to four different orders. Always three chai's, but sometimes a smoothie or baked goods. But in the last three visits, we each ordered a chai, but received everything but. By the time we realized it, we were already headed home and didn't want to turn around. We've been served lattes, matcha, espresso, and one that tasted like hot milk. This happened THREE times. The last time my daughter's went without me, I specifically told them to taste their drink before leaving. Because at $5 a cup, the amount of money wasted on incorrect orders was adding up. So they ordered their Chai, tasted them, then promptly told the barista that they'd made the wrong drink. They wanted a chai, not a latte. So the barista made a new one, but instead of it being a chai, it was hot matcha. My daughter, feeling bad, did not want to tell the worker he'd once again made the wrong drink & simply left with the hot matcha. Which tasted like hot milk and dead fish. So my review & star rating is not based on all of the combined things that I I don't like about Higher Grounds, as there's plenty of things I do like about it. However, I'm tired of wasting time and money on a business that doesn't even bother taking the time to properly train employees. Once is a fluke. Twice is a coincidence, but three times, with several different employees, spread out over a period of time, is just a tragedy. Our trips there are no longer fun, & I refuse to keep paying a business $50 a week for a poor experience. And that's what this is about. After too many consecutive trips that left everyone disappointed, I'm done supporting this establishment. read more

Higher Grounds is a perfect place for breakfast or lunch. My boyfriend and I came here for an early lunch before we hit the slopes at Windham and had a great meal. I ordered the Mountain Berry smoothie and the Spinach Salad and my boyfriend ordered the Tropical Fruit smoothie and Turkey Reuben. We both had only great things to say about the smoothies - they use real fruit and were filling. My salad was great - the bacon crumbles were perfectly crispy and the homemade vinaigrette was awesome (I asked for it on the side and was glad I did because they give you a huge portion). My boyfriends sandwich was massive and definitely worth more than what we paid for it. Neither of us are vegan, but I also noticed that there were a lot of vegan options for people, which was nice to know they were accommodating. The atmosphere at the coffee house was cozy and warm - perfect for a skiing town. I'm only ranking four stars instead of five for two reasons: 1) My boyfriend and I split a cappuccino and it was average, which was a little disappointing for someplace that calls itself a coffee house. 2) They used all paper/plastic products (knives, plates, etc) which is easy in terms of clean up, but I felt it didn't match with the higher end cute, coffee cafe Higher Grounds was depicting. Even our coffee was served in a paper to-go cup even though we staying in to eat. Not a major disappointment, just felt a little out of place.
