I have been having breakfast here for years - I love the Hi Tide and Winthrop too -- last weekend my sister and I went for breakfast - I had a bacon, swiss and mushroom omelette with pumpernickel toast and Pammy had scrambled eggs, sausages and a waffle with blueberry sauce - service was fast and friendly, the food was hot and delicious, and reasonably priced. on the weekends, the lines are out the door at times, but it's worth the wait. the waitresses are great too! read more

I was a paramedic in this town and this was one of our daily shift traditions - and emergency workers know good food. If there's an ambulance outside of a restaurant, chances are we aren't working and the food is a safe bet. We're pretty well known, and the owner/cook steve knows how we like our food. I'm pretty easy going, but potatoes make the breakfast and the Tide does potatoes. Be specific if you like em well done or a little raw, but you always get em how you like em. The bacon is more meat than fat, the sausages are juicy. My only complaint, if that's what you want to call it, would be the "juice" with the meals - they come in a plastic shot glass - outside of that - If you happen to be on the north shore area, looking for Breakfast - by all means take a trip into Winthrop by the sea, have a little breakfast and stop by their beach. read more

I used to eat breakfast here all the time (20 plus years ago) and was so excited to take my husband recently. We love breakfast foods, especially a good diner. Other than the awesome prices, there is not much I can say we liked. The French toast was not good. The bacon looked like it was cooked in an oven and not on the grill. All 3 pieces were stuck together and it was very chewy. The toast was barely toasted and the eggs were over cooked. The wait staff was super nice but the food was just not good. This isn't the best breakfast I've ever had, but this might be the best breakfast deal I've ever had. I got 2 eggs, 3 slices of bacon, 2 pieces of toast, a solidly large pile of potatoes, a large iced coffee, and then paid the tip for under $10. It's seriously the most amazing thing. Everyone in Winthrop thinks this is the best breakfast in town, Perhaps it is a decent breakfast place but to say it's the best in town doesn't do the Winthrop dining scene much justice. It's average breakfast at best. I have gone here twice and the food is just okay. I'm never really impressed. The toast tastes good. My home fries, both times, were way undercooked, as were everyone else's home fries so I believe it is sort of the way they make them, which is not very good. They even charge for coffee refills. Awesome! Suggested to us by the little close-to-Logan-airport hotel that we stayed at, in Winthrop, MA (in October 2014) This is a REAL neighborhood diner, with REAL food, and REAL local customers. I think my wife and I were the only people in the place that weren't on a first name basis with all the other people in the place...but no matter...they made us feel very welcome. If you like those old time diners for breakfast, then you'll love Hi-Tide. Definitely a great neighborhood spot, everyone seemed to know one another. Typical of most of these places, has a great line of counter stools overlooking the waitress station and flat top grill, which was great for me, as I stopped in by myself. The food was just what you would expect, it is what it is, and the staff was very nice. What gave it an extra star for me was the cook, Steve. (I think) Working in restaurants myself forever, I was impressed. I definitely enjoyed the show, not only is he one of the best I've seen, he obviously loves his work, joyfully singing aloud and interacting with the customers, left me in a great mood when I walked out the door. It's the type of place that is no frills at all, reminds me of a roadside cafe in a small town of about 500 people kind of place. This rating is for breakfast. It reflects my experiences there over the past 3 years (I understand it changed hands before that). I have had only positive experiences here. The servers are very nice. The portions are huge, the prices are extremely reasonable for such large, quality portions. They are very accommodating with special requests (eg I like my walnuts in, but my bananas on top of my pancakes). The place is clean and efficient. It's traditional diner-y, so don't expect gluten-free, dairy-free, etc. options, but it's the best neighborhood joint going as far as I'm concerned. Friend had brunch here and heard cook/owner vividly describing his desire to kill everyone at the border with machine guns. He said people should be lined up at the border and killed all at once. There's a certain level of a decency and respect people should carry in public and in business. It's everyone's right to express their opinion, but opinions like those should be reserved for private spaces. Friend had been a patron for years, and he asked to speak with the cook about his comments. He was denied that for a while until he finally got to speak to him. Don't go here. A group of friends and I recently moved to the area and thanks to Yelp we found this little slice of heaven. The restaurant is quaint and has a homey ocean vibe. The food tastes and smells like New England home cooking. Most of us ordered breakfast which was fairly priced and even more tasty. You can order from their specials menu in half orders and better yet you can order to go and for pick up. The dining staff made you feel like you belonged. My wife and I discovered High Tide after living here in Winthrop for almost a year. I don't know why but it took us a year to try it out. We were really missing out. Breakfast is what this place is known for and you won't be disappointed. This isn't gourmet food but the food is delicious for a little hole-in-the-wall diner. Steve is a great cook and wicked fast. If he's not working you can expect to wait a lot longer. The servers are friendly enough, some of them are nicer than others. The food is really cheap, you can easily get a filling breakfast for less than $5. The place only accepts cash but you won't break the bank eating here. Dinner isn't as good. I had a cheeseburger with fries and it was pretty forgetable. Unlike breakfast the place is empty around dinner time. I'd be willing to give dinner another chance though. The weekends are very busy. The place is small and there isn't much room to stand to wait for a table. You can always expect to wait a little bit on the weekends but if you're not picky you can almost always grab a seat at the counter. I really don't have too many complaints. One thing I wish they would change is the styrofoam containers they use for takeout. We picked up pancakes one morning and the pancakes melted the styrofoam to the point our pancakes tasted like plastic and made us sick. Needless to say I don't order takeout anymore from there. As someone said before not the greatest but not bad. This is a more of a "local" breakfast place. I found the waitress to be one of those "UGH anything else" type of impression. Seemed like everyone knew each other as i was eating and me a my party kept getting stares as if we weren't wanted. I got a plate came with eggs, bacon, homefries and french toast. I myself cannot eat eggs so i asked kindly if i could swap with maybe extra homefries or a sausage link. I was rudely told no we dont do that here which was a killer for me. Ordered homemade corned beef hash with two eggs over easy home fries and white toast. Eggs were cooked properly, toast was delicious. Home fries were hot but definitely heated out of a freezer. How this place has so many decent reviews, I'll never understand. I came here a few years back and had a pretty bad experience. I wasnt looking for "fine dining" but edible food wouldve been nice. I only ended up drinking my coffee and the like 10 home fries I got with my eggs. Was back this morning and Im pretty sure theyre only surviving off an older crowd of locals. Awful. My eggs and ham were spoiled. Like legit expired. I still cant get the taste out of my mouth. Told the waitress what I thought and her response was "Oh you don't like the food?". Um of course I dont. I was in there today for breakfast and owner was speaking to the waitress named Cheryl he was extremely belittling to her. He kept screaming and yelling at her she looked like she was going to cry. Recently moved down the street from High Tide and decided to pop in on a Saturday for breakfast. It seemed busy, but at about 9am two of us were able to walk in and grab a table - it soon filled up, so I'm glad we got there when we did. Our waitress was Cheryl and she was so nice. They have a nice breakfast offering - eggs/omelettes, pancakes, french toast, sandwiches and sides - and prices were super reasonable. We each went with coffee, scrambled eggs that came with meat (I chose bacon), toast and home fries, and also shared one chocolate chip pancake. The food came out so quick and was so fresh. The pancake was huge, so I'm glad we just ordered one to share...but I really could have eaten the whole thing because it was so yummy. Fast forward to Sunday - let's go back! Same time, little busier, same waitress, almost the same order, same awesome experience. Some of the reviews here mention unfriendly waitstaff, but I couldn't disagree more, even being a "non-local." Besides their breakfast offering, their lunch items look really nice, too, so I'm curious to give those a try. Overall good service, good food and fair prices, so we will definitely be back...probably next weekend. read more

1 star for the uncomfortable atmosphere but 5 stars for the food and waitresses. The food is great and the waitresses are even better. However I don't feel comfortable sitting there anymore watching how the owner belittle the cook who is great and the waitresses especially one in particular. He is constantly screaming at her and making rude faces and remarks to her. You cannot call your employees stupid. It is embarrassing for me I'm sure it's embarrassing to her. I know I'm not the only customer who feels this way. He needs to learn to respect his employees if plans on keeping customers. read more
