Recently moved down the street from High Tide and decided to pop in on a Saturday for breakfast. It seemed busy, but at about 9am two of us were able to walk in and grab a table - it soon filled up, so I'm glad we got there when we did. Our waitress was Cheryl and she was so nice. They have a nice breakfast offering - eggs/omelettes, pancakes, french toast, sandwiches and sides - and prices were super reasonable. We each went with coffee, scrambled eggs that came with meat (I chose bacon), toast and home fries, and also shared one chocolate chip pancake. The food came out so quick and was so fresh. The pancake was huge, so I'm glad we just ordered one to share...but I really could have eaten the whole thing because it was so yummy. Fast forward to Sunday - let's go back! Same time, little busier, same waitress, almost the same order, same awesome experience. Some of the reviews here mention unfriendly waitstaff, but I couldn't disagree more, even being a "non-local." Besides their breakfast offering, their lunch items look really nice, too, so I'm curious to give those a try. Overall good service, good food and fair prices, so we will definitely be back...probably next weekend. read more

I was in there today for breakfast and owner was speaking to the waitress named Cheryl he was extremely belittling to her. He kept screaming and yelling at her she looked like she was going to cry. At one point he purposely banged into her. He is very rude and demeaning and 100 percent lost my business I will never go back there again I don't know how these people could work for him. read more

1 star for the uncomfortable atmosphere but 5 stars for the food and waitresses. The food is great and the waitresses are even better. However I don't feel comfortable sitting there anymore watching how the owner belittle the cook who is great and the waitresses especially one in particular. He is constantly screaming at her and making rude faces and remarks to her. You cannot call your employees stupid. It is embarrassing for me I'm sure it's embarrassing to her. I was a customer at this restaurant for many years. Yesterday, I decided to go eat breakfast with my friend. We sat down and the second we sat down, our waitress came over to see what we wanted. We still hadn't even opened the menu, yet. We asked for more time and 30 seconds later she came around again to ask what we wanted. We still needed more time. Finally, 5 minutes later we order and everything was fine. Our food comes out, which was mediocre by the way, and we begin eating. I am about two bites in and the waitress puts the check on the table. She doesn't say a word, just trying to clearly rush us out. I continue eating and she came around our table three times and rolled her eyes, kept saying "oh my God." I was mortified by the ignorance and childish antics of this woman. I continue eating, although it was hard to because I was upset, and she put he hands on my plate and asked if I was done...while I was still eating! I said I wasn't done and finished my last few bites. I have never experienced such awful service. Oh also, my friend and I were the only people of color in the restaurant, so that's the only logical conclusion we came up with as to why we were being treated poorly. I observed the treatment of others at the restaurant and no one was rushed or insulted like we were. I WILL NEVER support this establishment again. At the end of our meal, we paid the bill, left an undeserving tip, and vacated the restaurant. read more

Cheap, fast, and delicious. What more could you want from a breakfast place? The serving portions are quite generous, so there's no risk of leaving here still hungry. Personally I love the homefries but some people seem to feel they can be a little underdone, so don't feel shy about letting your waitress know if you prefer them on the crispier side. There are plenty of complete meals on the menu to choose from and they are pretty good about doing substitutions, plus a lot of things are available as sides so it's easy to put together your own perfect breakfast selection. It gets pretty packed with the after-church crowd on Sunday morning, but even then they move right along so you usually don't have to wait long. read more

What a diner should be. Small, cramped, homemade food, and cheap. Had breakfast there twice, food was very good, as far as breakfast foods go, and not greasy. Exceptionally low prices. Staff was very friendly and helpful. These reviews that don't give this place a high rating are expecting too much. The reason they charge for coffee refills is so that they can turn tables. In fact, on the menu, they politely say "eat, pay, leave". This place has been there for years for a reason. We'll definately visit again next time we are in the Boston area. read more

Food and service are usually always amazing. Got a server this time that I've never seen before. Because me and my friend are in our twenties and had tattoos I think the server assumed we would not tip and we were rushed through our meal. I assume this women is new and it is no reflection on the restaraunt or rest of the staff. However low and behold I manage a cooperate chain restaraunt and always tip amazing because I have served and bartended. All of my parties food was late and not what we ordered. We didn't even get to eat our food because it came 25 minutes later than the people we were with. We asked to speak to the manager and the waitress refused. Was given no compensation and help! We tried to talk to another waitress and the first waitress came over and told her not to listen to us. This place is the biggest pile of trash that Winthrop, ma has to offer. I have grown up in Winthrop my whole life and ever since I can remember this place has been nothing but a big, greasy disappointment. I went there recently due to the low prices. My friends and I then had to wait 30 min for a dirty table that we cleaned ourselves to open up. We then waited another 15 min for a waitress to come over. She then managed to get our drinks wrong, and our food came out 40 min after we ordered and it was all completely wrong. And then to top it off she wouldn't fix it, and refused to do anything about it and then talk crap about my friends and I in her native language to her co worker. Little did she know one of my friends spoke the same language. We then asked to speak to a manager and she lied and said he was not in, but he was. My favorite place to go out for breakfast. Its all about the home fries, they ROCK. Breakfast to me is all about the home fries, face it eggs are eggs, bacon is bacon and toast, well you get it. Their home fries are consistently great. I like'm well done. I ve also taken a liking to their Belgium Waffle with fresh strawberries. Its always coming down to a big decision when Im at the Hi Tide. I like to sit up at the counter and I enjoy listening to the cook sing and ramble on as you never know what he is going to say next. read more

This could be such a wonderful breakfast place--very good food, quickly prepared in a homey old fashioned space--but: the staff is like a dysfunctional family. They don't talk to each other or help each other. They seem to shuffle about doing their tasks and even the goods ones never, never smile. The vibe is diffuse melancholy. The food is typical townie diner food as many reviewers have noted but what was the worse about this diner is the feeling of being "out of place". This was me and my husbands first visit to Winthrop Beach and while we waited for our room to be ready our hotel recommended visiting High Tide; my husbands steak and egg breakfast was not good at all, the steak seemed old and the eggs were runny with too much American cheese, lots of dry potatoes and toast. The Corned beef was better with the same eggs, potatoes and toast. We did not receive the same great service as the locals -- no free juice, no nice welcome and we felt like we were not welcome as Black patrons. I would say visit Winthrop its a great environment and all other restaurants we visited were great and welcoming but steer clear of High Tide. read more

We stayed over in Winthrop before a flight out of Logan and needed early breakfast. Hi-tide opens at 5:30, and it was just blocks from our hotel, so it fit the bill. It's homey and cozy inside and the staff was friendly, greeting us as we entered. My husband had the breakfast sandwich and I ordered the stuffed French toast with blueberries. There was only a full order on the menu but the waitress asked if I'd like a half order. I'm glad I said yes! The French toast was on Texas toast bread, filled with a good dose of cream cheese and fresh blueberries. A full order would've fed two easily! We also ordered sandwiches for the plane. I ordered corned beef and hubby ordered pastrami. The cook suggested that he do them cold so they wouldn't get soggy. We agreed. Both sandwiches were piled high on soft "bulky rolls". Each came with a hefty side of delicious potato salad and a 1/2 sour pickle. The service was friendly, the food was delicious and well prepared. We wish we had a diner like this close to home! High Tide has always been a family favorite; great food, great service, great atmosphere...HOWEVER, recently its been one bad experience after another. Sadly I was one of the last in my family to stay loyal to HT (there are tons of us in Winthrop and we've been going for 19+ yrs). My final straw was recently when I ordered a side of ham for my 16m old son. In the past theyve made it on the back grill to avoid cross contamination bc my son is severely allergic to eggs. When I requested it this time, not only did our server refuse to even ask, she said "the cook only has one spatula so it'll have eggs on it" -WOW, def NOT the place to go with food allergies! The food was alright, and our waitress was a kind, older lady. On the last sip of our orange juice, we found a short, gray hair inside. We were really grossed out and disgusted. We had finished our meal, and weren't going to say anything. But before we left, I mentioned it to the waitress and told her what we found. She brought the manager or owners wife over, and said "Sweetheart, what's the problem?" We told her and showed her the hair, still on the lip of the cup. Her exact reply was "how do you know it's not yours?" Seriously? I'm bald w/a shaved head, and my wife has long, black hair. That is your reply? Not "i'm sorry", or "I'll take one breakfast off the bill"? They took our $20 and didn't care. That is NOT how to do business. I will never step foot in that place again. I'm very active in the Winthrop community, and know tons of parents through my son's football league and church. I will let them know of my dreadful experience at this place. read more
