We found T&S for the first time on Saturday night after dinner in the area! We drive from Milton for seafood at Belle Isle and wanted a treat afterwards. Parking was easy in the lot next to the ice cream shop. Bustling place at 8:50pm with good music playing and loads of happy ppl waiting/eating ice cream of all sorts. The options are impressive and the ice cream (soft&hard) was terrific! I will say we wanted to see Almonds and Jr. Mints on the Toppings list but sadly those were not available. Something to consider?! What really stood out to us though was the Team! My husband and I are both in the Service Industry and he had been in Food for many years so we recognize good staff/service immediately! Skyler was the supervisor on that night and man did she run a well oiled machine!! Between take out orders coming in and being picked up, walk in customers waiting and overseeing her crew she had it all under control with a calm, firm and friendly hand. I even witnessed her bow and thank her team mates for the job they were doing with/for her which showed huge appreciation and leadership! We were very impressed! An example of a proprietary, loyal and effective employee we would be pleased to have working for us!! Kudos to them all. Yes the wait was a tad long but we understood and we were thanked for our patience and patronage! Again, something that goes a long way with us. We will be back and tell everyone we know!!! Belated review- this is about a visit from the summer. I was crazing soft serve ice cream one day, and Twist & Shake was the nearest place, hence I decided to give it a try. Located in Winthrop, I found street parking pretty easily. I was somewhat shocked by the price of soft serve- it was the same price as hard ice cream, so I ended up getting peanut butter Oreo ice cream instead. I got the real chocolate sprinkles- which is shaved chocolate- NOT the waxy pieces you normally think of as sprinkles. It was delicious! The serving size was very generous. This place is adorable. If your looking to go get some icy treats without the big franchise store feel go here. The vibe is very old fashioned. It's a family style place with lots of choices like ice cream, sorbet, Richie's slush, frappes, sundaes and smoothies. The list of flavors is huge. The nice girl at the counter let me sample a couple flavors. I wanted something different so tried the strawberry cheesecake and turtle ice cream. It was a tough decision but I went with the turtle that was a vanilla overflowing with chocolate chunks and caramel swirls. My boyfriends sorbet was excellent. It was loaded with fresh fruit. The inside has a mom and pop type feel with hand painted murals and colorful walls. The ice cream is from Richardson's and another local creamery. Absolutely delicious. Prices were reasonable. The small for $3.50 is more like a large so consider sharing. They also have a one scoop size for $2.50. The place has a few tables to eat inside or take it down the street and sit by the beach. There is another location on Revere Beach. I'll be back for more on a hot summer day. read more

Yesterday was the hottest day yet of 2010, and it arrived a bit early and without warning. I, along with all of metro Boston, thought that it would be nice to go for some ice cream after work. So I gathered up the roommate after work and set sail for a drive to Winthrop. I thought that Twist And Shake would be a little bit out of the way and thus not as crazy crowded as the rest of the ice cream places in the City, and I was pleasantly surprised when I was correct. First off, it's near the water (Winthrop just out into Mass Bay just past Easy Boston) and I'm sure had I been adventurous enough, we could have found a nice place to walk to and see the ocean and airport and whatnot. But I wasn't. The parking there, at about 6:30pm, was SIMPLE, and there was a free public lot across the street. Twist And Shake is in a storefront, and you wouldn't even think it houses an ice cream shop. We got in, and we must have hit it at the perfect time because the please wasn't busy at all. But this has NOTHING to do with the quality of the ice cream or the service, as both were pretty awesome. I got myself a nostalgic little soft serve twist in chocolate dip, and G got herself some sort of mint chocolate chip concoction. Their selection of flavors and different ice cream products was HUGE! The people there were wicked friendly and there was room to eat the ice cream there in their cheery little place. So if you find yourself in the heat of the middle of the Summer, craving ice cream, and want to have a little adventure away from the typical, stop by Twist And Shake in Winthrop. It's a 10 minute walk (or maybe less than that?) from my place, and I've come here... a little too often. :) My waist isn't loving me, but I love their ice cream! My go to order is a scoop of the coffee heath (coffee ice cream with heath bar chunks - YUM!) with hot fudge. They serve HUGE scoops, and aren't shy with the hot fudge, which I LOVE. And on really bad days, I stop here for a brownie sundae so that I can grab it (to go), and eat it at home while curled up in bed. Known as the "Twist & Shout" for those who have no memory, this ice cream stand is the typical, beach-side creamery that we all remember from our youths. After a walk at Deer Island, my fiancé and I stopped in for scoops. I ordered a vanilla malt frappe, and he ordered a twist soft serve with jimmys. They had to offerings of jimmys (chocolate sprinkles)- the typical, plastic-y classic kind, and these beautiful, thin, dark brown kind. Our sever said the thin ones were more like chocolate shavings. They looked delicious, but the fiancé chose the classic kind so I have no idea how they were. The vanilla malt frappe was delicious: the malt had a toasty, nutty flavor, and the shake was a great consistency (drinkable but thick). Also, it was a steal at $4.95. read more

Really cute place! Finally came here after living for 2 years only a 5 min walk away. The soft serve flavor selection is holy cow (haha get it? DAIRY). There are 20 something flavors to choose from and they are delicious. I had a soft serve cheesecake in a waffle cone, as suggested by the nice young lass at the counter and I am glad I got it. Both servers were extremely friendly and patient (You have to be with the huge number of flavors they have). The hard ice cream flavors are also plentiful and look delicious. They serve also slush which I need to try next. If its a really hot day, take a seat inside where its air conditioned, or walk a minute or two to Winthrop Beach and enjoy. You can park in the lot across the street or if you can find parking on the street then super. A plus is that they accept credit/debit cards and also have an ATM machine inside. read more

After running Deer Island a few times in the sweltering heat, I treated myself to a soft serve and cold bottle of water at Twist & Shake. How could I just drive by, without stopping?! For such a warm day, there was no line when I walked in, and just a few people sitting at the tables inside enjoying their creations - I guess everyone was still beachin' it. One of the young girls behind the counter promptly came over and took my order. Although they have a large variety of fun flavors, I was just craving a vanilla soft serve with chocolate sprinkles (sorry, almond joy - next time). I ordered a small in a plain cone, and it was quite tall! I'm sure there is a kiddie option, so maybe I'll go for that next time to feel a little less guilty about eating the whole thing. For chocolate sprinkles, there are two kinds you can choose from: old fashioned - what I am typically used to seeing, or "real" - very thin crispy chocolate sprinkles, that I have never seen anywhere else (believe this comes with a small up charge, too). I always go for the second option because there is just something about the texture and flavor that is slightly different and I love it. Prices seem a little high maybe ($7 and change for a small cone and water), but well worth it on a hot summer day. Overall, five stars, two thumbs up, whatever - I will keep going back. read more
