High Sierra Bakery is a fan favorite in this Eastern Sierra big "small town." We have been enjoying the donuts, cookies, breads, pastries and cakes since 1995. While ownership has changed at one point, the bakery has stayed in the family. Locals absolutely depend on this jewel. High Sierra bakery is more than just a shop, but a place where neighbors meet, chat, and feel at home, fostering a sense of connection. Locals also order donuts for their different clubs, acitivities and gatherings. Tourism is also a big part of the bakery clientelle. The bakery has extended hours during peak summer time. It's essential to get to the bakery early during these times to be able to have many variety choices. While the bakery must close for the winter, you can depend on them usually beginning in April into October. It has been a long time, but we have ordered birthday cakes in the past. Everything here is consistent. The apple fritters are a big hit, and I say big hit because they are HUGE. The bakery also has sandwiches on the menu, but I think they are usually not available until after 11. There is plenty of seating inside and a couple of tables outside. Stopped here on the way home from Mammoth to have an early dinner. We had originally decided on the Deli but even though Yelp said they were open, they weren't. So their loss was our gain because I really enjoyed the High Sierra Bakery. I ordered up a delicious Sierra Haystack, A MUST DO when you go here. The bag was tempting, but they also have single haystacks for sale. My wife ordered up the Hulk and shared a bite of her sandwich with me. Perfectly made, in my opinion. Nice flavors and not too much of anything. They did have to sub pepperoni for salami but that didn't make much of a difference. For my sandwich I decided on a simple PBj because I wasn't super hungry. It was a good choice. Great bread and simple ingredients. The space is big enough for most groups that are coming through town and it really did feel very small town vibe. The service was good too! So many times I hesitate to get anything really unique in small towns because they just don't have the turnover, but High Sierra was pleasant surprise when it came to the quality of everything we had. October, 2024. Everything was great in this Bakery except my Cinnamon roll. By great I mean ambiance and friendly people. The roll itself was dry as can be. Maybe it was a bad batch, but for five bucks I would have expected more. No prices posted. My guess it's that way so it won't scare people away. I tell you what, if their coffee doesn't give you a jolt, their prices surely will. But, after all it's California. The night before, at another establishment, I paid $24 for a hamburger and a beer. When I paid for that I laid down two twenties and the server asked me if I wanted change! I sure do want change. It's time for a change. Quick Tip: The Cinnamon roll is labeled as such. But what the little sign doesn't say is that the roll you just bit into has raisins in it. I prefer it that way, but someone who doesn't is sure going to get a surprise. read more

I want to like this place so bad. I used to come here all the time on vacation and get pastries and donuts for our boating trip on the Reservoir. When you walk in, the employees just stare at you. No acknowledgement, no greeting, just awkward staring. The pastries are good, extremely pricey though. I got like 10 donuts and a large cold brew and it was $44. Seems high to me, but may be average since prices are high in general. The cold brew is okay, seemed bitter to me though. Had to add half and half, trevia, and sugar to make it somewhat enjoyable. Overall, we usually come here when we are on vacation, so maybe we'll be back next year. read more

Friday morning 9 am and Just passing through, so stopped for coffee and grabbed an order of their coffee cake as well. Unfortunately they were all out of apple juice, ran out of forks, no napkins to be found, and the servers were not so friendly. It was busy but also happened to be one of the few places open at this hour. $9 and change for coffee and cake. The system is also a little confusing if you've never been here. Order pastries on the right and coffee/pay on the left. The sandwiches on the menu sounded delicious but we didn't order. The coffee was eh, and the cake was too big to eat without a fork. It was moist and reasonably tasty. The cake sits atop a layer of baked apples and cinnamon. The 2 pcs in the photo is one order. read more

Overpriced, $6.50 plus tax for large cold brew that is mostly ice. It was fine, just expensive. I guess they can charge Starbucks prices because there is no Starbucks and you are beholden to them. Very cute little shop. Came in for breakfast and coffee after waking up extra early to soak in the nearby hot springs. We got there at about 7am. It was slow but very quickly picked up with lots of people coming in. We got the coffee cake - so fresh it was still steaming hot as it was being served. It was very moist and the apples at the bottom were a welcome surprise! We also got the cold brew, which was tasty. The people that were working were friendly and welcoming. It wasn't cheap, but in a town as remote as this one is, that is to be expected. Overall, this was a cute spot with good options and I'd happily return. read more

Stopped at this place twice passing through the Owens Valley. The bakery is lovely- they make their own bread and sweets- and they also make breakfast and lunch sandwiches. Their homemade BLT sandwiches on their own bread were tasty. The star of the show was their sweets. Excellent brownie and their coconut macaroons which they call haystacks. Definitely the best we've eaten. They mix dates and walnuts in with them, and it gives a whole other rich layer of flavors. read more

I dined here a couple of days ago, and the experience was disappointing compared to previous summers. The donuts have lost their quality; they are bland, and the old-fashioned ones are extremely dry. We ended up throwing all of those away. The donuts are also much smaller than they used to be. It seems like there might be new ownership or a different person making the products because they just don't taste as good anymore. Additionally, the seating inside is gone which has been for the past couple of summers and you now have to walk up to a dining table for them to ring you up, which detracts from the ambiance. I also ordered a ham and cheese croissant, which was a letdown. It had just one piece of ham and a tiny sprinkle of cheese, which is not worth the price. Overall, it was a disappointing experience. Will not be returning here ever. If you're coming from bishop or mammoth, I recommend Schats Bakkery instead. read more

I stopped by High Sierra Bakery on my way to Virginia Lake for some fishing, and I couldn't be happier that I did. The apple fritter was not only delicious but impressively large--I could barely finish half, and I have a pretty good appetite! I also picked up some brownies and cookies to take with me. The brownies were fantastic--soft, rich, and perfectly chocolaty. The chocolate chip cookies were just right too, soft and sweet, with a perfect bake. I also grabbed a loaf of their sheepherder's bread for sandwiches, which was warm, soft, and absolutely wonderful. This bakery is truly a hidden gem in the Eastern Sierra, and it's now firmly on my list of reasons to love the area. read more

I walked in over Memorial Day weekend and was so grateful they were still open. Everyone was so friendly. Why am I posting now? Well I don't really post reviews but I loved their screen door, it's a piece of art so I revisited Google and end up looking at pictures of it again and decided to post! I love the bakery & I want to support small businesses and in this case seasonal so I'm going to do a review today to say that I'm always so happy when I go to Bridgeport & they are still open ( LOL I'm not an early bird, I'm a night owl) !!! I have truly loved everything I have bought from them. Yes in the afternoon they have already sold out of most of the favorites but everything I've bought has been amazing! It's a small business in a town that has to travel a minimum of 90 minutes each way to get supplies so trust me it's worth a visit! read more

What a lovely bakery!! A cute little shop! A great selection on pastries and other baked goods. The ham, jalapeño and cheese croissants had a thick slice instead of the thin deli cut you find at most places, and the bread was so perfectly flaky. We got a few and boy were they filled! The donuts were great! Now let me tell you about the haystacks- Holy moly little bites of coconut deliciousness, they've been great quick snacks or pair nicely with morning coffee. Oh! And the hobo bread made for the perfect toasty grilled cheese- it's a great tasty multigrain bread! Ask about the Blind Dog coffee there's a wonderful story behind it and it's delicious! My girlfriend and I stopped here and got the last turtle pastry, one of the glazed donuts, a chocolate chip cookie, and a cold brew. The turtle pastry was delicious... rich but somehow quite light despite being a chocolate covered pastry filled with cream. The glazed donut was quite remarkable, really. Cakey and sweet... with a sugary crust on the bottom. It was much better than a typical glazed donut. The cold brew hit the spot and we haven't had the cookie yet. Their system doesn't allow you to leave a tip on your card payment, but the kind attendant told us to leave a review if we liked the food so here ya go. Delicious pastry in the Sierras! Recently I was in Bridgeport for a couple nights and being an early riser I was walking the main street around 6:30 am (I know, that's crazy!) looking for coffee and maybe breakfast. Let me tell you, it was 25 degrees out there and I was just about to begin questioning my own mental stability and decision making abilities when I ran into High Sierra Bakery. There are not many places in small towns that open so early, but High Sierra Bakery opens at 6:00 am! The first thing I got was a HOT cup of their delicious coffee. After I warmed up a bit I started noticing the wonderful smell of fresh bread and pastries. The wonderfully sweet lady who was behind the counter saw that I was staring at the freshly baked items and suggested I try the new berry and orange filled croissant they had made for the very first time that morning. I am not a big fan of that stuff in general, but she was so nice that I did not have the heart to say no! Oh my goodness! It was so delicious! Make a long story short, I was there again the very next morning around 6:30 am, ate one more of those delicious croissants and bought three to take with me for the rest of my road trip! High Sierra Bakery is jewel of a bakery! This is where I stop by for a pre-hike carb fix whenever I'm out hiking in the area. Bridgeport is flooded with many trails and cool spots to check out and the High Sierra Bakery is where you should go to fuel up. Every time I stop by the employees are always super friendly and you can just smell the freshness of all the baked goods. From what I was told, everything is made fresh every morning. They offer up bagels, doughnuts, pastries, coffee, and my personal favorite, the ham & cheese sandwich. If you're in the Bridgeport area you need to stop by and say hello. Limited indoor seating, but aside from that: Superb feta quiche, and one of the best cinnamon rolls I have ever tasted. Combined that with apple juice and hot tea, and I was good to go for a long, hard hike in the mountains. By any standards, a fine place for breakfast. Donuts are good, sandwiches are good but very small for the $. This time we ordered two sandwiches. Never got them. Poor kid making the sandwiches was swamped but the kid that took our order failed to mention they were out of the bread that comes "with it". Not a big deal, the problem was the kid that took our order never gave the kid that makes the sandwiches our order. So after standing there waiting for 45 minutes or more watching the boys fart around with their friends instead of making sandwiches and wanting to close up I decided to ask if he was going to make our sandwiches next and he said he didn't have our order. I should not have lost my temper with the kid making the sandwiches because it wasn't his fault. Just be aware that if their friends come in it will take them a long time to make your food or if at all. There were two ladies waiting for their sandwiches too, one of them asked the other if the boys friends were distracting them from making their sandwiches as well. Robin maybe teach your kids/employees to ask their friends to wait outside until closing, common sense. I hope they paid for their iced coffee that they "ordered" Been in here many times and never had a bad experience until now. I asked for a refund and they said it was processed.
