There is a very good reason this is the busiest ranch at Apple Hill. It's right off the freeway, abundance of parking, actual clean bathrooms, many craft booths, delicious food and attractions like pony rides and fish ponds for kids. We visited on a Wednesday and it was still busy so i can't imagine the clusterf$ck that it becomes on weekends. We found parking for our bigger truck (F250) relatively easy. The walk from the parking lot to craft booths are minimal. Avoid walking by the porta potties because jeez, totes gross. There are bathrooms with flushing toilets and sinks so don't think this is your only option. There's many ways to walk into the place so if there's hoards of people one way, just literally find the path less traveled. We bought everything from goats milk lavender body balm, cinnamon shaving bars, chicken salad sandwich from the grocery/cafe, leather keychain and hair bow. The line for the apple cider donuts and fritters here are INSANE (about 20 people deep). We were lucky enough to get donuts from Rainbow Orchards first where lines were only about maybe three people in front of you. There's also a gigantic floating apple for photo ops because really, let's all do it for the 'gram. TLDR: come on a weekday, support local shops and buy their goods, there are real water-running bathrooms, be ready for lines for apple cider donuts/fritters. read more

This place has gotten a little out of control... A little less flea market and a little more apple hill charm would be appreciated. I like their Apple Donuts and Apple Fritters... The best on the hill! I got two apple donuts with sprinkles which were really moist and tasty, and my Husband and Stepdaughter split an apple fitter with nuts which was plenty big enough for two people! Fortunately we got here at 9am because after we sat down to eat the line was all the way outside and around the corner. Crazy! Their prices for apples were good, I got 6 Fuji Apples which were $1.29 per pound and they had a lot of varieties of apple ago choose from. If you are coming to Apple Hill to look at crafts, this is probably the best place to do it. They have a bunch of craft booths which were less "junky" then other craft booths at other orchards. Parking is a bear so make sure to get here as close to when they open (8am) as possible, or avoid the weekends all together. On the weekends the traffic also backs up for miles each way around the entrance to High Hill so be prepared to wait. And wait. It backed up all the way down the freeway just for this one ranch. Their pies are good, but I think I like the pies at Boa Vista Orchard better. They are also cheaper. We got a Baked Caramel Apple Pie here for $16. Yikes! Needless to say, we only got one. They also have a small pumpkin patch area, fudge shack, restaurant and fish pond but none of it is worth actually taking the time to see. And the fish pond is kind of cruel... read more

A great family tradition! I suggest coming in a weekday or early on the weekend, because this farm draws major crowds. They have many vendors selling crafts & foods, pony rides, fishing, tractor pulled hay rides, a market, plenty of apple infused foods, and wine tasting. My toddler loves the rides and we love the food! My favorites are the apple donuts, rotisserie chicken, apple salad, caramel apples, hot apple cider, and of course the wide variety of apples! Came on 12/21 and the place looked deserted. Almost everything shut down, except for general store area. We ordered some hot chocolate and doughnuts which were pretty good. We wanted to get some caramel apples and were told to pay up front. The guy working the register said they were being finished and needed to be brought up. There were roughly three trays by the doughnut section that looked ready to go. I stood up front for about 10 minutes without any form of update or acknowledgement. Several other people came up front and asked about the apples, only to get a "when they are ready" response. Two other guests came up and suggested finding a way to bring the apples up or to put up a sign to let customers know what was going on. The employee responsible for changing out the surge protectors and other electronic devices shot back with a "would you like to work here" response, and then him and the employee working the register proceeded to complain about the customers and their issues. I decided to walk away at this point and went down to Boa Vista, where they had twice as many options and caramel apples readily available, with friendlier staff to help me out. We were here last year and they keep on improving this place. Pretty cool! We ordered their Apple pie to go which was so delicious as always. And worth the drive just for it. Crust is perfect with tons of apples. Flavors comes together perfectly. We also got lemon and raspberries pastry. Lemon pastry the fluffy and crunchy flavor of the dough for perfect. Difficult to rank. Love it here, some things are amazing, others not. The wait in line for the cinnamon sugar apple donuts was worth it ($1.35 each) but the apple fritters are far better, and less expensive, at YumYum Donuts or Marie's in Sacramento, and less expensive (high hill's was $5). If the donuts are hot, don't get the glazed. They are just a wet and sticky mess. But the cinnamon sugar are to die for!!!! This review is for the caramel apple we bought. It was really delicious and the sweetness of the caramel balanced out really well with the tartness of the apple. This farm/orchard had a lit of food and fun attractions. We also bought some honey from one of the vendors at the craft station. There were lots and lots of craft tables. If you want something neat and unique. This place got it! We trued some apple cider from one of the ranch that was bunched all together on high hill Rd. Their cider tasted like pure apple juice! Wayyyyy tooooo sweet. Upon crossing all the ranches/farms we've come to conclude that rainbow orchards apple cider is best. We will be back! read more

I ordered a slice of pie, priced at $5.50 on the menu, but it came up $5.94 on the register (and I hadn't even finished ordering). I said but it says $5.50 on the menu. He said it's taxes. I said 40 cents on 5.50? He snapped, Yes, 8% and that includes dine-in (which I was not eating in, NOBODY was!) I stood there a minute in shock and he immediately said "Next customer, and looked at me and said "Step Aside!), I was stunned and said (since me and my grandaughter waited 8 minutes!) I will buy a piece of pie if you want to sell it to me. Then he said louder "NEXT CUSTOMER, AND MUMBLED I'm refusing to serve to you. And he continued to wait on the next customer! I'll never come back here again. The place was busier than can be and no one was social distancing and half of the people weren't wearing masks. People were encouraged to take off their masks at times. On top of that I asked 3 people where the pumpkin patch was and they didn't even know if they had one. I've always found High Hill Ranch an overrated tourist trap, but this time I'm really disappointed. I guess they are getting so popular that they are raising their pie, and other baked goods prices, but dropping the quality. The donuts were dry and expensive at $1.50 each or $15.00 for a dozen. $5.50 for an apple turnover which was mostly dough. Lastly, we bought a frozen pie to bake at home later. I followed the directions, and wound up with a soupy doughy mess. My opinion, pass on this place. I really wanted to like this place since we heard so many good things however maybe if the staff was a bit nicer and less crowded I would have enjoyed it a lot better. My family and I got there at 9:30 am to beat the peek hour WRONG!!!!! It was so packed we couldn't find parking. Once we circle around for a few times and finally got parking I was shocked to see how crowded it was. Also no one is wearing mask at these events incase you are one of those who do wear them. Don't waste your time at this Hobo Garage sale. After gassing up our vehicle the night before and preparing everything for about an hour drive we were more than disappointed. When we first pulled in there was some parking attendant child yelling at people to keep going but there was nowhere to go. We brought our kids here because we thought there would be kids activities, there was nothing. A $8 pony ride that was tied on a circle loop, a small pond people were clamoring too for any kind of natural farm or landscape. The rest is overpriced flea market booths with flannel shirts and concrete cowboys. We waited in line for some coffee and snack areas and the lines never moved so we left about 20 minuted after getting there. Save your time and money, there's no reason to come here. read more

Finally writing a review from our trip here. Area was lots of fun, and even though it was crowded, we were able to get good parking. The food at the restaurant (like the burger etc) were not good, but the cider and apple doughnuts made up for that. There were lots of activities and stuff to look at. yes outta control is right?! . Went on a saturday and omg lots of people, crowded and it was like a zoo with lots of kids, and parents. lines out the door!. . Parking first, had to park in the dirt where the tree is, we got parking control so that was ok, meaning a person flagging to tell you where to park at. . Its very nice and sunny with no snow. So everyone was laying on the grass near the pond. Picnic tables were all full. inside the vendors were long lines, and crowded. . kettle popcorn which was made fresh and was worth every penny. Warning don't start with one piece of popcorn because you won't stop and don't wanna stop til the bag is almost empty. Fresh, hot, warm, and sweet! yassss! . pictures? yes very pretty to take pictures, but is it best right now, its gonna be crowded so just a warning, but good to go see. changing colors of leaves yet, nope but still worth a drive. maybe get there early will be best. . Arts and craft venodors? yes they have a little side strip selling all kinds of souvenir, like magnets, cups, shadow boxes with mini decor in it. i have never seen this before since i always visit when there is snow in november. it was nice to see this place without the snow. . Overall i think its a nice tourist area to show around to new people in cali. lots of wineries near by which is cool, and good to boozy it up. Drive from sac is like 45 to 1 hr, which isn't too bad. on the way or on the way back you can stop by old town placerville too for another attraction. No you'd post a sign at your entrance informing your customers the cash only is required. Great place, came here Sunday Morning (11.10.19) at 9 am, hardly anyone there. Great time because lines not too long and 1st in line for pony rides. Donuts were great. Good scenery. Shops were cute and overpriced, expected... got chili, fries and cheese for my daughter and I, way too much food for us, but super good. Next time we'll get pie and hard cider, at least I will. I have ALWAYS loved visiting High Hill. Its always the first stop. The caramel is AMAZING!! I always get the carmellow when I go. Lots of craft booths and goodies to eat. A nice little pond where kids can fish (I think on the weekends) . The apple fritter is so good too! We brought our lunch this year because we have never been happy with their actual food choices that don't involve sweets. If you go during the week there are still quite a bit of vendors, as opposed to other stops are closed or not much is going on. Definitely our number one for Apple Hill. read more

Beautiful gorgeous place! We had no trouble finding parking with a person guiding us there. There were many vendors selling unique arts and crafts from soaps to candles to art pieces. The lines for the caramel apples and the apple donuts were equally long, but it seemed to move pretty fast! I will definitely be back to try some of their food as well! read more

Crowded with long lines. I was disappointed to see the covid-19 protocols were not being enforced. Many people were not wearing masks or social distancing. We did our best to stay away from others while eating, but found ourselves in a line with people who were not wearing masks. It made the experience very uncomfortable. We decided to leave. read more

This place has the best donuts ever. It was super disappointing when I went yesterday and COVID-19 guidelines were not being followed. The only reason I went is because their Instagram said there would be social distancing, masks, etc. No one was social distancing. Very few people were wearing masks. There is still a risk of getting the coronavirus while being outside with others. When I ordered donuts, one woman in the bakery in the barn had her mask on her chin and most of the cashiers had their masks below their noses. There were no napkins at all and I had to ask someone to get them. I was very stressed out the entire time and could not fully enjoy myself. It was such a let down. I go multiple times during the fall, but I won't be back after this experience. If you are not concerned about getting the coronavirus, then you'll be fine. If you are worried or high risk, I suggest waiting until next year. read more

This place is the sweetest, literally! Such a great place to spend with the family to enjoy fall. They have delicious apple cider, a fudge shop with amazing pies, and a selection of apple based donuts. Thy also have a cute intimate pond, great for family photos. The handcrafted art the vendors offer are so beautiful. So many great Christmas gift ideas! My reasoning for only 4 stars is the prices. High Hill ranch is the most expensive location on Apple Hill. All products are priced lower one mile down the street at another farm. It's worth it to visit more locations on the hill, and can be better for your wallet. Take advantage of the vendors, the views, and the fun atmosphere at High Hill Ranch, but do your apple purchasing at another farm. read more

High Hill COULD BE the only Apple Hill place you go. It's got it all, and what it has is pretty good. They sell cider, pies, apples, pumpkins, just about everything you need. But it's also like Disneyland on Spring Break... people everywhere, ridiculous lines, gridlock traffic just to find a parking spot... Kind of a love-hate sort of place. The craft fair that they have is probably the best one in town. Tip #1: Make this the first stop in the morning. It's still pretty good on a weekday too, though the craft fair is iffy on weekdays. And don't drive within half a mile of this farm on a weekend afternoon: cars backed up forever. Tip #2: This place has the best doughnuts!!!! There's a special (and lengthy) line just for them. We always get a variety pack (glazed, crumb, cinnamon sugar, etc), then slice them in quarters and sample them ALL. Worth the wait though. Tip #3: The cider shakes are quite good! You do get a little sick of sweetness between the doughnuts and the shakes. They have some good apple wine they have at the shake shack. The pond is a nice, relaxing place to rest, when it's not teeming with hundreds of people. Decent pies, not the best, not the worst. The cider is fair. There's a fudge shop nearby that has a playground around the side for the kids to blow off some steam. I'll be back, of course, year after year, if only for the cider doughnuts. But I don't need to tell you, because EVERYBODY seems to know about this place. read more

Horrible service and bad structure. Two employees directed me to wait in line to order food and drinks. After a 35 minute wait I ordered my food and tried to order drinks but was directed to a second even longer line for drinks. I understand it's their busy season and lines will be long but selling food a drinks separately when you are asking people to wait 30 minutes in each line is crazy. For a place that is "family friendly" it's crazy to ask people to wait twice. Avoid this place and go to the better locations in Apple hill. Better being pretty much any other option. :) read more

Oy vey - where to start? So sad when you see a place that was started with great intentions become so institutionalized. I'll start with the fact I have been coming to Apple Hill since the 70's, so I have been through the area a lot of the years. This is not the only long-running place to get their corporate attitude on, but we gave them another chance to try to get a tri tip sandwich (they stopped serving them, but didn't take their signs down) and everyone in the group was completely disappointed. If you like, mass-produced baked items, this is not a problem for you. Thought still edible, these are the worst apple doughnuts & fritters I have had from Apple Hill in a long time. Flavor? Not really. Texture? Safeway doughnut. Customer service? Nope. Friendly attitudes? Stunningly rude across the board EXCEPT the lady in the fudge shop. She was super sweet. Plus - bring cash. If you don't catch the employees YELLING over the PA system that credit cards are not accepted, it's cash only, you may want to get your hearing checked. There is a single ATM on site that charges you $5 per transaction. My tip - drive a little further up the hill, go to some smaller places. You will be greeted by warm friendly people who appreciate your business. read more

I'd like to take a minute here and say that it makes me really sad when folks take away stars arbitrarily from a business. I mean, if you had really bad service, or the place was a dump, or the food was gross, sure. High Hill ranch has so much to offer, I personally don't think it's fair to give them a lousy review based on one bad beer-type drink. Just my personal and probably rather arbitrary opinion at that.
