Map of all the apple varieties!
    Annie Z.

My favorite location we visited on Apple Hill! There were over 30 types of apples grown on the trees for u-pick, and the apples were priced pretty well at $2/lb. The staff were super friendly and welcoming, showing us the map and inviting us to take a picture of it to know which apple trees we were looking at, and welcoming us to taste the different kinds of apples as we went so we knew what we'd wanted to take home too. We loved trying apples we'd never heard of such as the Winter Banana (which did taste like banana!) and King David. It seems like some other features Denver Dan's used to have (like a bakery and apple peeling) are no longer available, or at least were closed when I visited this past month.

This was an amazing Apple Picking location! Out of all the locations that we went to this location was absolutely the best! They had a wide variety of apples and they encouraged you to try the different types. This allowed us to to fully figure out which apples we liked and also encouraged us to pick more apples. We walked around the whole farm trying the different apples and taking 10x more back home! The owners were very nice and gave us water on an extremely hot day. I would 100% recommend this place if you are visiting!!

We went apple picking and had our dogs it was a great experience, very low key and relaxing. Simple enough. You get a bucket pick your apple then they weigh them and you pay. $2.50/lb. I wish they had cider too and usually they have pies, but they were out.

I wish I could give them a higher score. Nothing like 2 years in a row to be disappointed. We signed the waivers and gathered our supplies. Moving out to the end of the orchard there were no apples! If there were apples, they all had holes in them. It was sad and dreams were broken . We did enjoy the tasty treats and cider. The employees were super friendly. Shout out to the dude heating up pie! If you drive up and see barren trees on the way in,just go straight in the store.

This place was so much fun with many different apple tree options to pick from. Make sure when you arrive you take a picture of the map of where you can find each apple that you like. We got the please of actually meeting Dan upon our arrival. With U-pick places declining this place has always been the top of the list. Yes a bucket of apples cost about 22 dollars but it's more about the experience. They welcome tasting of the apples while you are about and if you do not like it just toss it on the ground. I got to try new apples that I haven't before like winter banana. There are many great photo opportunities including looking over a little lake. They are kid friendly as well. Inside the building they have pies and James and apple butter and many items you can buy and try out. They have some already picked out apples as well just in case. Loved coming here and glad we were able to come and make the stop.

Our crew was greeted by Dale, who was so nice and accommodating! We loved him. Apple picking was really easy and wasn't as expensive as some of the other places. We bought the applesauce which was AMAZING, and i really enjoyed the no sugar added apple butter, tasted super natural while still great. I can't wait to come back to try the pasteries

Our favorite place to go for u-pick apples at apple hill. We missed the pony ride this year and was informed by the owner that they lost the insurer as they moved out of state and they cannot find anyone to ensure them. It's such a fun thing for the kids to do. Apples are on point this year... a huge selection of a ton of varieties. We love the apple thumb that each kid gets as you start your apple picking journey. So much fun and great memories for all. Can't wait to come back next season.

What an great find! We have been going to the Apple Hill area for many years, and I have no idea how we missed Denver Dan's. We had made our obligatory visit to some of the more popular apple locations, and while standing in a very long line at one location, a super cool dude asked what sumptuous item we were in line for, and he immediately suggested that if pie was something that we were after, Denver Dan's was THE place to go. Feeling adventurous and hoping to avoid anymore lengthly lines, we took what turned out to be a fairly short drive to Camino. The drive was picturesque, and I couldnt believe what I've been missing out on all of these years! Some of the other apple picking, food serving places along the way were either closed or visibly crowded. I was excited to arrive at Dan's and discover plenty of open parking, a small picnic area, and not a lot of people. *SCORE* We had apparently just missed the crowd, and secretly hoped that there would still be plenty of a selection. Who knew that we'd find truly one of the BEST pie places in the area. The place is isn't very big, but it is filled with so many goodies!! I'm not a pie girl, but I'm pretty sure that Denver Dan's has converted me. Walking in was like walking into grandma's kitchen. You can watch where the pie creations are made, and there is an adjacent window where you can purchase freshly baked goodness. Anything from a larger than life apple pie, to delectable chicken pasties. What's really THE find... not all of the pies are apple. Say what?? thats right!! They make a variety of berry pies (some mixed with apples) sour cream pies, cobblers, and other desserts. We opted to purchase some pies from the freezer section, (take and bake) and asked how long they would keep in the freezer ( I was pre-planning for the impending holiday season) and was told that the frozen desserts would last at least six months, like they'd last that long! We opted for the strawberry- rhubarb, a huge dutch apple crumb pie, and a sour cream apple blackberry pie. We already knew that one wouldnt make it to the freezer at home. The pies come with no brainer baking instructions, and an hour or so later, your home smells like youve been baking all day. We baked the strawberry rhubarb, and I stealthy hid the others in the freezer. The pie was filled with big pieces of flavorful fruit, and the flavor did not disappoint. I wasn't a fan of the crust. It was dry and wasn't the buttery flaky crust i had hoped for. Dan's also sells jams, jellies, chunky applesauce, and the old fashioned extra-large dill pickles at the counter. They dont skimp on ingredients, and its reflective in their pricing. Add Dan's to your must go to places when visiting Apple Hill. The staff was super friendly, and worth the extra few minutes of drive time from the regular locations.

Rainbow Orchards was too busy so we drove down the road and found this place. It was less popular but still had pies and strudel for sale. There was also a guy about to do an apple peeler demo? It's dark inside and could be revamped a bit for marketing appeal. Otherwise, there is a dirt road parking lot and you can walk around the orchard area.

Denver Dan's is one of the few U-Pick locations left in apple hill! My family and I travel 2.5 hours every fall to come pick apples and enjoy the area. We have always driven by Denver Dan's but never stopped by because we thought it was on the smaller side. We were wrong. Denver Dan's is huge! I mean there are over 30 apple varieties to pick from! You will find beloved apples and new kinds too! We discovered an apple variety called Winter Banana which might just be our new favorite! Its a yellow apple with pink freckles. So unique! And yes is slightly tastes like banana. One thing that I really loved was that we were greeted by Denver Dan himself! I mean you can't get any more mom and pop than that! Denver Dan's is now our go to U-Pick and we can't wait until next year to come back!

It is a simpler, smaller, compact farmers market compared to Sacramento Downtown or Midtown. It had a nice variety of vendors. The Saturday I dropped by, they were selling produce, frozen fish, flowers, plants, nuts, baked goods, breads, kettle corn, artisan soap, honey, and jewelry. Some of the vendors were... Thao Ranch of Galt, CA: This small family run farm sells fresh produce. Some of the offerings were fresh dill, sweet snap peas, carrots, red onions, squash, leeks, beets, chard... some other items I can not remember off hand. The produce looked all so beautiful and were vibrantly colored. The carrots, beets, and onions still had their green tops on. Fresh. Plus they sold flowers. Beautiful bouquets of fresh flowers $12-15. Huge full gorgeous bouquets. Professional looking. Grateful Bread of Fair Oaks, CA: I was ecstatic to see their booth. I use to live near the bakery (an actual bakery where they made the goods right in the shop). I would drive or bike on over, my faves were the muesli bread and olive n feta cheese loaf. They have some of the best bread I have ever eaten... mmm. They were selling baguette (sourdough and French), cinnamon raisin bread, jalapeño n cheese bread, muesli bread, slider rolls, dinner rolls, cinnamon rolls, coffee cake, banana nut loaf, burger buns, ciabatta rolls, cookies (chocolate chip, peanut butter, oatmeal raisin) and a bunch more. These are all fresh made and not chuck full of preservatives like store shelf bread. I bought a bag of a dozen slider buns $5. Chick's Kettle Corn: Good stuff. Fresh made kettle corn straight from the kettle. He makes it earlier in the day and bags it. I bought a small bag $6. Nature's Nuts: The owner sources the nuts from Ripon and Modesto farms. I spoke to him for a bit. He is quite engaging and quite knowledgeable about nuts (nutritional value, storage, flavoring). No BSing. He sold walnuts, almonds, and pistachios in the shell sold unflavored or flavored. I bought a bag of 8 oz honey smoked almonds. Yum! I was able to sample. The walnuts were so fresh and had an excellent sweet earthy taste. Pat's Pastries: Home based business selling baked goods. Irish soda bread, whole grain bread, chive n cheese biscuits, zucchini pineapple bread, pumpkin ginger bread, gluten free pound cake and zucchini bread... were just some of her offerings. Malik Brothers: They sell various flavors of papadum, chips, rotis, and naan. Each come in a variety of flavors. Roti is a flatbread, made from stoneground whole wheat, originating from India. Ruby's Ranch: They are a farmstead selling all organic produce. Their booth sold a variety of lettuce. It looked all so fresh and vibrant. SUMMARY Visited here per recommendation from our hotel as we were visiting for our wedding anniversary. We went to get something small to eat and dropped by Chimayo's. Afterwards we visited the farmer's market and picked up two desserts. VENUE As mentioned, the market is small but they had about everything that a larger one would have too. Fresh veggies and fruit, crafts, ice cream, pies, and food. We dropped by one place called "Tahoe Pan Ice Cream" which is one of those places that serve poured cream and "scraped" ice cream in a cup. You might've seen this on travelogues on Youtube (popular in SE Asia) and yes, that's the style of scraped ice cream I'm talking about. It was quite good and in a shareable portion size just right for us. There was another shop we dropped by that sold homemade pies. We struck up a conversation with the owners who were long time residents of SLT. They were a nice couple, so we bought their one and only remaining Key Lime Pie. Sorry no pics because we gobbled that delicious pie like nobody's business that same night :) Overall if you're in the area during the summer, it's definitely a good stop if you're NOT looking for large crowds and away from the NLT "scene" near the casinos.
