The experience didn't start off great, but did end up great. We had made an online reservation before we got to the restaurant because we were a rather large party. Upon arriving the staff didn't seem to happy with the size of our party (16) and came off upset that they'd have to serve a large group without a reservation. We were eventually seated and later notified by the manager (or owner - I'm not sure) that the reservation showed up after the refreshed their page which was after we'd already had a rather cold reception. Once we were seated, our server was great. She was patient with us and explained all menu related questions. The friend chicken was delicious but the show stopper was the jalapeno gravy. It was so good I could slather it on anything and everything! I'm a huge fan of humming bird cake and it's not something you see often so when I saw it on the menu, I knew I had to order it. I've been wanting to go to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower with the cowboy hat on top, so I made a little jaunt up there this past weekend - it was a two-hour drive from my home in Bedford. I looked up restaurants in the area and found High Cotton Kitchen. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner - I was hoping to get there for breakfast, but alas...they stop serving breakfast at 11AM, and I got there five minutes too late. Happily, though, they have Chicken Fried Steak, and I'm always on a quest for the perfect CFS! They were super busy, but I was greeted immediately and seated promptly. I decided on the CFS with Baked Squash and Green Beans with Bacon as my two sides. I had my choice of either regular Cream Gravy or Jalapeño Cream Gravy, and I chose the traditional version. Hindsight makes me think that the Jakapeno gravy would have elevated an *excellent* CFS to the next level. The CFS was tasty and delicious. It was not super tender, but it never really is, is it? The green beans were sublime, as the bacon used for seasoning has a slight sweetness to it. The Baked Squash was tasty, as well. For dessert, I ordered the Red Velvet Cake to bring back home. There were four layers of red Velvet heaven cushioned with layers of delightful cream cheese frosting. The service was very friendly, and my waitress was Stephanie. She had the ability to handle four tables at once, keeping everyone happy without missing a beat. The restaurant was decorated with a cotton theme - after all, they're right up there in cotton country - plus, vintage pictures and funny signs. The restroom was clean and well maintained. I think Paris, Texas, is one of those places where you have to be going there to get there - one doesn't just pass through since it's off the beaten path. I stumbled upon the Veterans' Memorial when I went to see the Texas Eiffel Tower. It's worth making the trip, and I'll post a separate review about my visit there along with pics. My work travels took me to the town of Paris, TX for the week. Aside from abundant fast food restaurants, I just couldn't seem to find any cool places to eat. It's been a busy work week for me so after work, I was just too tired to go and eat at a sit-down restaurant. Fortunately, I was able to order food from here for delivery. I liked the place so much that I ended up ordering dinner from here two separate nights. The first night that I ordered dinner, I got the pot roast with side salad and savory rice, shrimp Brochette appetizer, and the cherry banana cream cheese pie. The pot roast had good flavor to it as well as the savory rice. But the definite winner was the cherry banana cream cheese pie. Wow, never thought the combination of cherry and bananas would work, but it definitely did. It was so good that I was tempted to lick the container. On the second night, I ordered the Big Mama's Meatloaf, side of green beans and savory rice, and the cherry banana cream cheese pie. The meatloaf was okay, nothing really bad to say about it besides maybe that it doesn't come with any gravy or any sauce. It was a tad dry, but not terribly off-putting. The pie was nothing but awesome again. I have to come back to Paris in a few weeks to complete my work assignment so I can tell you that I plan on grabbing dinner from here again that week. Terrible! I ordered 2 chicken tenders and mashed potatoes and gravy. Seems like a safe bet, no?! The chicken tenders were precooked chicken breast, cut in half, then breaded and fried. ‍ The breading was super greasy and fell right off when you took a bite. I do not even know what happened to the green beans - I did not know they could become tough strings of leather. I asked if the Blackberry infused sauce was tomato-based and was told no, maybe the kitchen staff does not know ketchup is made from tomatoes? This visit was early evening with our dogs traveling to Houston and their huge porch seating area was perfect to beat the heat and sip lemonade. We had chicken-fried chicken and a backyard burger. The veggies were crisp and flavorful and the burger was cooked to order. The chicken-fried chicken filled the plate and had the just right amount of breading. The fried pickles were good, but they burnt the roof of my mouth. My water tasted disgusting, like actual sewer water. It took 40 minutes to get my food. I ordered the 3pcs tenders with Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. My sides were cold. And my chicken tasted weird. I only ate for 20 minutes because I regretted taking my family here. We immediately left, and I fed my leftovers to the dogs. They also, did not eat the Mac and cheese. If you want a local southern restaurant, go here if you don't want to drive. Came to check out this place per the recommendation of a colleague. I learned that many folks in the DFW area come to this small town to avoid the lines for drivers permits and licensing for themselves and their children. I also confirmed this interesting phenomenon with the locals. My curiosity of Paris, Texas also took me down a dark path of the history of the town but I'll save that for another time. Don't want to steal any glory from High Cotton. Anywho, I was fearful of the service and food quality after reading so many of the negative reviews ranging from slow service, to cold food, too rude servers. None of which I experienced during my first visit to this establishment. We were greeted by a super pleasant hostess with an amazing set of pearly whites that went by the name, Elyzabeth (that's not a typo, she told me her name is spelled with a Y....so adroable, right?!). She almost sat us in an area that appeared to be overcrowded with tables but decided to seat us in what appeared to be a more private area that worked out nicely for my restless legged toddler. Elyzabeth then called out for our server by name letting him know a table was ready for him. He appeared almost as quickly as she summoned him. His name was Michael. A very pleasant young man. Patient, kind, and strikingly handsome. My son wanted a kids slider but they were out of hamburger meat which was a bit of a bummer but the grilled cheese my son got instead saved the day. He devoured it. Along with the fries. My wife and I both got the chicken strip dinners with 2 sides each. They chicken strips are soaked overnight in buttermilk and fried in soybean oil and were extremely delicious. The loaded mashed potatoes, as I've read from the owners response to unsatisfied customers, were made of Yukon potatoes and were so creamy and flavorful. I loved it and gave my wife a taste. She agreed. We capped off our meal, of which we ate maybe 40% of due to the appetizer of fried pickles, with a few dessert items. Michael recommended the Humming Bird Cake to me and my wife had some coconut pie-something (you'll see in the photos). The 2 hour commute from DFW was worth the trip. We even stopped by the little Eiffel Tower about a mile up the road from this establishment. Drove from Antlers to eat here, very disappointed! Got seated fast enought and got our tea and bread, started off bread was kinda stale. We ordered meatloaf with mash potatoes and gravy with okra, and chicken fried steak, with mashed potatoes and gravy with corn. Fantastic food and service. A friend recommended we try this place, and I'm glad we did. Although the server suggested the meatloaf and chicken fried chicken, I was in a burger mood and gave the mushroom bacon Swiss burger a shot. Delicious. My son had the BLY and also loved it. Whatever you do, make one of your sides the bacon green beans. Smoky and amazing. Our server kept our glasses full and even provided to-go cups! She stayed a while and chatted with us, even though they were closing, and recommended we see Paris at night, all lit up. She was right. We asked for the check and sat there for 15 minutes before we asked again and our waitress said that she thought she had already checked us out. I found myself seated in a room right off the kitchen alongside some elderly, some grandkids, and a few fine ladies. My welcome included a glass of milk, glass of water, and a miller light. Loved the taste of milk, though it's most likely the air of the place that makes me so receptive to milk on a Sunday aft. A peaceful wait brought hush puppies to my table. A quick and tasty appetizer that I've not enjoyed so much before. Like biting a rock made of warm, buttered cornbread. Returning readers will know my penchant for a full glass of water till the end of my meal, so here comes the verdict on how their water service is..... (drum roll in your head) My water glass went empty. And by the time I desired more, it had been left untouched. In fact I needed to pull somebodies attention for a refill... do NOT fault this quaint place for my outcry though. I am a very picky bastard about my water service-but this has nothing to do with quality of food. On a conversation with who I assume is owner, or manager, he guaranteed me I would love their Smoked Clucker (Cadillac style) and if I didn't, it was free. Now, I'm writing this review as I eat, so I will let you know what the verdict is-and if I recall, get a picture. This was at some point a home. The bathrooms are a one person, almost 1950's style clean. It arrived. I took a bite. It exploded. I used my hand as a dipping trag and ate the whole thing without putting it down. This chicken thing is good. Great realky. I do love it. The man won. The French fries are great as well. My napkin is covered in egg. Am I getting dessert?? Yes. We're going to try the sweet Georgia brown caramel cake! We'll see what it brings. Wow. That is REAL cake. Not birthday white or chocolate you grabbed from Walmart. Real. Bonafide . Home cooked. We are not local to Paris, but we saw the reviews and thought this would be a great place to stop and eat. When the waitress came to get our drink order, she told us there would be a wait for our food because they were finishing breakfast orders before they switched to lunch. Why can't they do both, not sure, but keep in mind meal transitions are slow. We placed our order, they brought rolls which were fantastic. We waited almost an hour before we received our food. My son ordered the Bubbas Burger, medium. This looked like something you would feed your dog-dry, overcooked, previously frozen patty, and it tasted very strange. The brioche bun was toasted until it was rock-hard. No mustard, mayo, nothing, and the waitress didn't ask when he ordered so we did not know it would be coming dry. To make things worse, they were out of lettuce and the waitress didn't know until the food was almost done. How are you out of lettuce when there's a Kroger in the same parking lot and I see salads coming out of the kitchen? And they also forgot the caramelized onions. My husband and I ordered the chicken fried steak. Taste was ok, but it was super chewy, again probably previously frozen meat. I don't know how this place is getting such great reviews, clearly you haven't ordered a burger or eaten real chicken fried steak. I expressed my disappointment when paying for the meal and was told they would let "Richard" know. They really should have comped the uneaten burger. Will not be back. UPDATE: NOT BOGUS, totally honest and truthful. How else would I know there is a Richard? You know what, here's a screenshot of the charge on my bank account. And let's say the meat you use for chicken fried steak isn't previously frozen... it's still too chewy. Burger is 100% previously frozen.
