A must stop for us every time we travel east from west Texas. it is about an hour out the way but so worth it to enjoy the best catfish meal ever served. My first introduction to visiting Paris, TX for the first time was The Fish Fry. A reservation was made in advance and we arrived with a party of 15+. Our server Maddy handled things well for the most part, which was a plus. My only suggestions would be to take orders from the end of the table to the front so that orders are not mixed up at the end. Ordering was a bit all over the place but luckily everyone received the meals they ordered. Lastly, fully explain how your "All you can eat" option really goes it will prevent any confusion moving forward & save people some money. Upon seating, fresh & delicious hush puppies were placed on the table - don't fill up on these lol. Next, freshly cut white onions were brought (didn't quite understand this but hey), then green tomatoes (not a fan but heard they were good). The drink & food orders were brought out quickly which made us VERY happy! I ordered their combo platter of fried catfish, boiled shrimp with a loaded baked potato. The catfish was okay would have preferred thick fillets vs small & thin catfish nuggets. The boiled shrimp were okay can't really go wrong there EXCEPT they were brought out with a cup a water which was odd so I asked what it was for, I kid you not she said "to clean the shrimp I guess" say what?! Anyhow, the side salad was basically lettuce & radish slices. It came with tomatoes but I opted them out. They don't have Caesar dressing so I ended up choosing ranch. Now, let's talk about their "All you can eat catfish". I personally did not order this BUT it definitely set a tone for others who did. Their whole concept is BACKWARDS. Do not think they are gonna bring you plates back to back of big thick catfish fillets. They will bring a plate & have you grab some pieces then take it back vs leaving whatever is left for that person. And a KEY point to note, they expect every person to pay for it individually but the plates brought are supposed to be shared with everyone at the table "family style" they said. Yeah, that's not how that works lol. Babes Chicken has the family style concept done correctly, maybe take notes from them. Basically, just order their combo plate which is a few dollars cheaper. When I think of a "Fish Fry" I'm expecting big flavorful crunchy fillets. The menu should note "nuggets". Also to note, someone ordered grilled catfish & they brought her grilled chicken because they don't have grilled fish. This should have been communicated to her beforehand instead of just choosing what you want & even that alone was a small cut topped with a pineapple slice, I have never seen that lol. To fix the issue, they brought her a thin mushy piece of "baked catfish" - she took two bites & that was enough for her. It left little to be desired she said. You can tell The Fish Fry is a town favorite but even for a person from a small country town it fell short of my expectations. For the locals it could a staple but for others not so much. Being we were starving, it did its job but would I personally return? Negative. read more

I came to this restaurant yesterday for a very close friend's mom's surprise party, and I was floored by how impressive this place was all around! This restaurant is very classy, beautifully decorated, and very clean. The food was unbelievably good, we had the all you can eat catfish dinner - and it was seriously SO good! The Fish Fry. Just about the best fried catfish I have ever had. First, it was only me so they took me without a reservation and I was served right away. There were numerous servers and the place was packed on a Friday night. The fish was out right away and Hot! I wasted no time and dug in. The tartar sauce was good. It came with french fries, also cooked just right and not greasy. Also Hush puppies. The Cole slaw was wonderful with green pickled tomatoes. I got more fish til I could hold no more. Wow! We ate here on Friday evening. It was very busy, but the wait was not bad. The people were friendly both employees and guests. I had the catfish and my wife had the fried shrimp. My catfish was good, but catfish restaurants should have beans. . That is a huge miss. The tomato relish was good. The slaw was meh. Whatever those things were that they called hushpuppies, weren't. They were just deep friend corn meal. My wife's shrimp had zero flavor. Our friends say the steak is excellent, but I cannot testify to this. WOW. It's the only way I can describe our dinner last night from a small town fish house. From the fried oysters, to the shrimp cocktail, to the steak and lobster tail. All of it was AMAZING. If you're looking for a fill you up sized lobster tail you will definitely get it there and it was cooked to perfection along with everything else. We live about an hour from there, but will definitely be making the trip back for dinner sometime soon. My husband and I went there tonight for the first time and we'll definitely go again. We both had Fried Catfish and I had boiled shrimp too and he said he'd give their fish about a 3 1/2 and I'd give it a little less because I wasn't crazy about it. BUT, we both loved the cole slaw and the Hush Puppies and would give them a 5, we thought they were GREAT! I also had some of the tomato relish and I'd probably give that between a 3 and a 4 and would definitely eat that again. Tonight my husband and I ate at the Fish Fry in Paris Texas. The fish was fresh and tasteful. I ate the grilled chicken breast, which was moist and tasty. The tomatoes on the salad were fresh and sweet. I can honestly say it was very tasty and the atmosphere was homey. This is my go to place for original fried catfish. Not too many places use only cornmeal now a days. The menu is limited but I highly recommend if you just want a place to enjoy a good quality meal. I do not like catfish at all! It always has a weird dirt taste. My husband ordered it..basically made me try it. I loved it at the fish fry. It tastes GOOD. The next time we went, I got the catfish. It's literally the only place I like catfish. Who knew catfish could NOT taste like dirt. Not me. I've heard from many that the steaks are great. I need to try it. They are just too expensive. This is a "medium rare" ribeye. Their fish remains the best in town by a hair, witch Catfish King just behind, but their steaks are worthless cardboard. Second time I've ordered one, only to be disappointed again. If you like your steaks to taste like beef jerky, order it medium rare. This place has gone to the birds. read more

Headline: FISH FRY IS LIKE REDNECK DIM SUM This review is for Dallas types--(everyone in northeast Texas knows this stuff already): If there is any way for you to take about an hour an' a half road trip northeast--either 30 east or the "north route" 121 to Hwy. 82 east through McKinney--you arta just go ahead and do it. Thain't no fried catfish like this in Big D. This is the best, and they been doin' it for over 30 year'n (this is dialect, folks). I've been a regular here since, oh, around 1981-ish. I can't detect that the facility or decor has changed a bit since then, but its not frumpy or "faded glory" at all. Open for dinner only, I do recommend you make reservations or you'll be stuffed into the small-on-space waiting room with the rest of the Dickensian orphans-looking-in-the-restaurant-and-hoping folks while others with reso's waltz past you and onto glory. The food: aight here's what you need to know: "get the fish." In Fish Fry parlance, this means the $16 all-u-can-eat fried catfish and its all you'll ever need. Now they do have a combo option for fried ersters or scrimp + a 3-piece fish plate that is also excellent, but first-timers need to just focus on "the fish". In a matter of seconds, drinks and hush puppies'll be whisked out and placed steaming hot (not the drinks) in multiple baskets in front of you. I won't call it a rookie mistake to right way begin filling up on these cylindrical golden friend corn meal miracles because even the veterans are powerless against them and we start-a shov'lin. Pretty quick after that the waitress (never seen a waiter here) will begin depositing all these little dishes of greatness all over the place family-style for the group: sweet cole slaw, pickled green tomatoes, more hush puppies, french fries, bowls of ice water w/ fresh-sliced white onion (this is requisite), a plate of individual tartar sauces that you will ask for more of, and on request a plate of lemon wedges (also requisite). AND THEN... Oh man, the big platters of succulent and right-outta-thuh-grease golden catfish filets, some thick and juicy, some thin and crunchy (you can ask for which one you like better, too). They are volcanic hot, so watch out! Squeeze ya some lemon juice on there, pull one apart and put it in yo' mouf. Now here, you're gonna stop everything and shut your eyes as you savor that white, flaky clean tastin' morsel of salty corn meal surrounded catfish, and just suck the juices down your throat. Don't you put any tartar sauce on it yet. You can do that in a minute. Have it native, first. Gitcha a forkful of that cole slaw now and another hush puppy. The joke is, no one ever touches the french fries cause the hush puppies are so superior to them. Now repeat this process until you look and feel like a parade balloon. Pay on the way out and get a free mint at the checkout to counteract all that col' sliced onion you ate with the fish and hushpuppies. P.S. If, somehow, you go here so much that you actually can use your force of will to *not* get the fish, Fish Fry also features some of the best steaks in NE Texas. Understanding the choices for Paris Tx are limited. The amount of people going into this establishment are a false positive. Granted the food wasn't horrible. Dated yes...limited menu and many of the items are Sysco food service items. Fried corn bread is free, tastes like bland Chinese wontons. Needs salt. The salad is a pre mix nothing special. Corn was previously frozen. Baked potato ok...but the condiments coming on a plate that look liked they came from a 7-11 loose the effect. $25 for a steak you'd think the cook on it would have been better. My steak looked like a rainbow of temps. Rare on one end well done on another...did you forget to flip it half way thru? read more
