I cannot imagine anyone returning to this place. I was served cold spoiled fish and carrots that were black/brown rotted and what's more they didn't care.......not one word. Had the owner or management commented ect but my plate was snatched (literally) from my hand and they ran off I presume to not have to deal with it. Funny I doubt the owner would have taken a bite. Our server was sweet, but overwhelmed with our large group even though we were low maintenance. I ordered the steak medallions medium and they were more like a rare as they were raw inside. I ended up switching my meals with someone who was ok with meat that rare because I couldn't eat it, and I was never asked if it was cooked the way I wanted. The chicken fried steak wasn't seasoned much. The mashed potatoes were good as was the asparagus. Normally I would give 3 rating for an experience like this, but I know that this is a locally owned place so I don't want to bring down their overall rating score. read more

Small town East Texas. The Chop House really is worth finding out. Set on the edge of the charming town square of Mt Vernon. We dined with some out of state friends the we had not seen in years. I was hoping this place would impress my big city friends. We called ahead for reservations- good idea- the place was hopping. Cowboy hats as far as the eye could see. Endless drink list and deep menu. The ladies had blackened salmon and the guys had prime ribeyes. Each cooked to our individual perfection. I'll take pictures next time for sure. Not one, but two hairs in our food. The hostess took a phone call in the middle of talking to us with our reservations and had us stand there and wait for a few minutes while she answered all the customer on the phones questions. It then took us 10 minutes to see our waiter to get drinks. Then another 30 to place our order- after asking someone to please find our waitress. My husband got his food and there was a long hair in it. After I was halfway done with my cold eggs Benedict, I pulled a long, different colored hair out of my mouth. On the positive, everyone was very kind. The cracklins were delicious and I'd go back for the lavender martini. It was beyond delicious everything was delicious from the salads the ranch the deserts and omg the filet was large as a softball!! One of my favorite things to do when it comes to small town Texas is visiting different steak houses! Mount Vernon is such a great looking community and such a special place to live. The pride of ownership in this community is impressive. My daughter who is working in the area knew I would LOVE this place. Does she ever know her mother well! The building itself is really spectacular! It has history and character! It is truly unique in a very good way! The ambience could not be more perfect! The floors, wall, decor, ceiling........ WELL DONE!!!!! The steaks are THICK and JUICY and made to perfection. I asked for medium rare and that is exactly how I got it. The side of carrots was delicious as well as the loaded potato. The bread basket is a must. The customer service is top notch. Everyone there did everything and with a smile. Great staff!!!! The staff is all over the place and not worried about what is or isn't their job. They do whatever needs to be done. The owner was on site and visited each and every table. What a doll! We were in Mount Vernon for an event. We looked for a local place to support before returning to Dallas County. We decided to try The Chophouse. Reviews online were good. I wish I had looked closer and read more. We would have made another choice. The service was 5-Star. The atmosphere was excellent. My wife and I both love history. You could not ask for a better location for local history. The hostess was beyond polite and pointed out several historical pictures and items when we were looking at pictures on the wall and even told us about the historical elevator in the bar area. Our waiter was top-notch. I love a good chicken-fried steak. That was what I ordered. My wife ordered the Chophouse Chopped Steak. The CFS steak was described as homemade, hand-battered, and golden fried. I do not doubt the hand-battered, but the meat and breading left a lot to be desired. If I didn't know better, I would say the meat was nothing more than a chopped steak or hamburger steak. It was not golden fried. The breading was as dark as the meat. The gravy was runny and mostly pepper. I should have said something while there but it was close to closing time and we had a two-hour drive ahead of us. After looking at the pictures of food online, I would say chicken-fried steak is not a fine-dining menu item. Most items look like they are prepared for cruise ship meals than a roadhouse or steak place. I don't fault the restaurant or its owners. After all, they are Aggies. Some of the best people I know went to Texas A&M. Next time we are in Mount Vernon, I will look for something else. I usually do not complain online, but I felt the owners would want to know. I hope we were just there on a bad night for the kitchen. My 3-Star rating is for the staff. read more

Always a pleasure to eat here. It's hit or miss on how busy this place can get. Price wise, its a bit expensive to me. I don't think you can walk out under $100 for two people unless you ordered a regular beverage and a appetizer. The food is good, I wouldn't say the best steaks I have ever had but still good. The service has always been great here. Except if you eat in the bar area. The bartender gets super busy that can cause you to be waited on a bit longer then you hoped. It's a cute set up and the owners are always there and checking on tables. Sometimes your steaks comes out over cooked. Great spot with a lot of variation of experiences. They have nights with live music, outside seating or just plan business casual type dining area. Lots of dark wood, high ceilings and space. Service is good. We've been 4 times and have enjoyed the salmon, filet tips, wings (I think they've discontinued these), salmon salad and sea bass. Steaks are likely great, we just happen to eat our filets at home. Signature drinks are amazing as well as the smoked old-fashioned which brings many here. What a lovely, and special place! We visited The Chophouse this weekend for the first time and had a great time. The building and the decor has a great environment. The building was built in 1912 and still has a working, manual elevator that was put in the building to carry model T's in for service. Our meal was delicious! The tempura asparagus is a great starter; I had a NY Strip that was cooked perfectly. My husband had the chicken fried chicken which looks amazing! This is a true family owned establishment...The owner and his wife were there, she came over to our table to welcome us and gave us the history about the building. Last night was our 2nd visit to The Chophouse. We were greeted at the door with huge smiles as we entered this early 1900's building- Incredible, cozy ambience. My very picky husband ordered the Chilean Sea Bass and it was cooked to perfection with a side of a whole carrot and grilled asparagus! He cleaned his plate! I had the Prime Filet with a beautiful golden baked potato and side of Brussel sprouts- so delicious! If I could give 4 1/2 stars, I would just because the steak was a bit undercooked for my liking, but my husband had no trouble finishing it for me. Their house Chardonnay is delicious!! I'm picky on this one. WONDERFUL experience! we will be back!! Thank you Stephanie (the owner) for visiting with us! FIVE STAR: Food, Spirits, Service and Atmosphere! Another wonderful night at The Chophouse with friends. A restaurant is only as good as those who run/own it, and The Chophouse could not be anymore inviting and friendly. From the owners, to the staff, to the building itself, The Chophouse is small town friendly, with a relaxed ambiance, and fine food. Everyone is made to feel welcome. Don't be surprised when the owners take time to welcome you to their place. More often than not, we eat in the bar area. This area is like a tiny community. Guests talk between tables and I've met some pretty incredible people this way. Another highlight of the bar area is watching Smitty make his Smoked Drinks. I've promised myself I will try one of these next time, but it's hard to move away from their great wine selection to try anything new. I know most of you come in for the steaks, chicken, seafood and such but The Chophouse also serves the "Impossible" burger for those of us who choose a vegetarian or vegan diet. This is just another example of how accommodating are Brad and Stephanie. If you find yourself hungry while in the Mt. Vernon area, I highly recommend The Chophouse. They don't open until 5PM so if you find yourself hungry in the middle of the day, try their other restaurant, The Bull Pen Grill, just a couple doors down, which is equally good. read more
