Super friendly folks today! Took the time to explain the types of donuts and flavors so we could narrow it down to six. We got some delicious lattes and my daughter hit them up for a hot chocolate. They only have four metal bar height chairs to sit on, but we did and boy did we enjoy our delicious donuts. Each one was very unique from the yeast, cake and cruller varieties with delicious glazes or toppings to add more flavor and texture. You simply have to stop by and try this place when in town. Good stuff! I stopped in with a friend for a few post-lunch donuts today: three was plenty to split between two people, and cost around $9 after tax & tip. The interior of the donut shop is stylish and welcoming, and I saw a few bar seats if you want to stay to eat. There were plenty of flavors; we ended up trying the Portland Fog (i.e. lavender + earl grey), maple cruller, and chocolate & sea salt cruller. Service at the counter was quick. The donuts were all tasty! I actually liked the Portland Fog donut texture better than the crullers, which were nice and airy but a bit soggy/limp for me. The Portland Fog was especially delicious -- I love a lavender + earl grey combo -- though I wish it was 10% lighter on the lavender flavor. The chocolate & sea salt flavor combo was also delicious (though you can never go wrong with that flavor pairing). I will flag for those with dietary restrictions that there are unfortunately no vegan or vegetarian donuts here, since they fry all their donuts in lard. Overall, a pleasant experience. Cool place for really unique donuts. Wife and I split an iced coffee and two donuts - old port and the s'mores donut. The s'mores was just what you would expect, tasted like a cruller base with marshmallow, chocolate and pieces of graham cracker. It was good but a little too chocolate forward for me. The old port was a similar base with a cake type of crumble on top. This one tasted denser, which I liked. It's a small place with 4 seats inside, and just as many outside. However, I wish I came here a little little bit earlier in the day because I didn't realize some of the donuts would be sold out nevertheless, I got a twist and a chocolate sea salt crueler. I have been here multiple times and just went here the other day for a pickup breakfast. I am never disappointed. Staff is always friendly and the service is always very fast. It's a nice little shop in a good location and you're always greeted with a smile when walking in. This time I got the bacon and cheese on a bulky roll and then three selections of donuts. The breakfast sandwich was very good. Everything was good perfectly and they put a good amount of bacon on the sandwich. Also asked for hot sauce to be added which I highly recommend. They have a wide variety of donuts always available and they are always so delicious. When you walk in you'll see how hard it is to choose from all their flavors. After an extremely disappointing experience at one of the super popular donut spots in Portland, my group actually ran into another group of super disappointed patrons that mentioned they were at Hifi earlier and enjoyed their donuts. Saw this place sold crullers and figured we really needed a win so gave this place a shot. Opted to get two donuts. The salted matcha cruller and the Portland Fog (a take on the London fog). The latter donut was a cake donut, albeit like an old fashioned style one. Was pleasantly surprised with just how MOIST the donuts were. Significantly more than the last place: My only critique was I found the frosting to be a bit much. Almost like it was a hard shell placed on top of the donut versus a nice glaze over it. Yeah, this place is the BOMB. If you're questioning it or you're overwhelmed by the sheer amount of options (there were over THIRTY-FIVE to choose from on a Sunday morning!!), get a cruller-style doughnut. You have to. It literally melts in your mouth, it's so good. I don't have any other way to explain it. HiFi Donuts is freaking awesome. HiFi donuts is a small breakfast/donut place in Portland with a 50s-ish interior. I went with friends almost every morning, and we absolutely loved everything we tried - the donuts were impossibly soft and utterly delicious, the breakfast sandwiches are perfectly sized and bursting with flavor, and the coffee is really, really good. Tragically for every donut shop in town, I am more of a fan of Entenmann's uber-processed grocery store donuts than artisan ones--HOWEVER: Hifi Donuts is the place to go if you're a donut lover. I ordered both the nutella and their savory ham/cheese donuts, as well as the lavender lemonade. Surprisingly, the savory donut took the cake, as it was exactly like a ham and cheese pastry--ooey gooey and delicious. Pro tip: get it heated up. The nutella donut was good but not necessarily anything to write home about. The lemonade was fantastic and perfect after a long day at the beach! The staff were very friendly and the space is small but both tidy and cute. Not a ton of indoor seating, but the seating they do have overlooks Congress Square. Definitely a must try!! Last summer I stood in line for an hour at Holey Donut. Not doing that again. So HiFI caught my attention on yelp. Made my must do list. You cannot park right in front of the store as it is on a turn in a city area between two blocks. Very short walk to either street. Good selection of flavors. We went with a half a dozen. I love me a good donut. Honestly Dunkin' usually suffices, but there are plenty of quality donut shoppes (fancy spelling) to give your tastebuds a run for their money. I'd say HiFi Donuts did a formidable job doing just that for my fiancée and I back in early July. This Portland-based donut place isn't anything special in location or interior. It's potentially missable especially if people mention donuts in Portland as they'll direct you to Holy Donut first. For us, HiFi worked well in proximity (and didn't come with a warning of long lines) so we were able to stroll into this trendy-themed donut establishment a few times while in town. Once inside, you'll notice the full menu of options. HiFi goes quite beyond the donut level offering breakfast and lunch choices as well as a variety of coffee styles. Our second trip here did have us indulging in a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich along with some cold brew coffee (both were tasty), but it's really the donuts that brought us back that second time. What's so special about these donuts? Well a fun fact about circular pastries in Portland is that they're made with a recipe that includes potato. Yup, you heard that right. Potato donuts! Okay they're not only made of potato, but the inclusion of this ingredient definitely gives these morsels a little extra denseness and perhaps even weight. For that reason they're a tad smaller/thinner, but HiFi offers up quite the selection of flavors to choose from. With that in mind, my fiancée and I split a couple of donuts on our first visit. This included a key lime pie donut, raspberry chocolate donut, and HiFi's French cruller. At $2.50 a pop we figured it was worth it (and we were right!).The latter of the three we bought was good (this was a suggestion by one of the employees), but because it was a French cruller in style, you could tell it didn't have that potato aspect to it. The other two rocked the appropriate flavors and despite their density, we finished them off with ease. A different consistency than your average donut, but deliciousness nonetheless. It left us wanting more and so we made one more pass by HiFi before leaving Portland on our last day there. This time around we went for a half dozen in hopes to bring some back with us to good ol' Long Island. A few repeats were in that mix (key lime pie and raspberry chocolate), but we also tried the chocolate glaze donut, Mexican hot chocolate donut, strawberry shortcake donut, and the berry patch cruller (hey, it was a good donut even if not potatoey). Each one basically delivered on taste and stood out for what they were aiming for in flavor. Overall, HiFi Donuts is definitely a worthy stop in Portland to try this type of unique style of donut. Yeah, maybe Holy Donut is the one that gets all the hype, but I wouldn't sleep on HiFi. They have a nice selection of flavors and definitely do the potato donut justice. Breakfast and coffee aren't half bad either, though the donuts are the real reason to come. And you never know, you might just love these more than Dunkin' (shh don't tell them). read more

Yum! We stopped by for breakfast one morning, and they not only had plenty of donuts to choose from, but also breakfast sandwiches too. I opted for the churro crueller, which was delectable. My friend got a crueller with chocolate glaze on top and said it was maybe the best donut she's ever had. I also got an iced coffee but it was not very good. I noticed another guy enter the shop with a coffee already in hand, and there are plenty of coffee shops nearby so I would opt to do that next time and just focus on the donuts here. This is my review for HiFi Donuts in Portland, Maine. So my family bought 1/2 a dozen donuts for $14.00 which is cheaper compared to Holy Donuts (it was a few dollars more). We got 5 different flavors including Cubby Bunny (2x), Chocolate Coconut, Chocolate Donut, S'more Donut and The Simpsons Donut. They were all looked very good. The one I had was the Chocolate Coconut one which was really good it compared equally to the Holy Donut. I'm a sucker for doughnuts, and will usually seek out bakeries and such specializing in them. As soon as I discovered HiFi when planning my Portland trip, I made it my intention to try it while I was there. I was actually planning to spend the day outside of the city exploring elsewhere, but not before stopping at HiFi to pick up some carbs and coffee. I had read that the line for HiFi was consistently long, but when I arrived around 9am it wasn't too bad - nobody was waiting outside but as soon as I walked in I was greeted by a line (by the time I left, however, a line had formed outside). It was fine though, because they have such a large selection of doughnuts I needed time to figure out which one I wanted. In addition to said doughnuts, they have a variety of breakfast sandwiches, coffees, and a lunch menu. They had a combo where you can get a doughnut and a nitro cold brew, so I decided on that. After much debate, I went with the berry patch doughnut. As the name suggests, the frosting was berry colored and had the flavor to match. I found it interesting that they used a cruller as the base, but it actually made it quite light while still retaining a good doughnut consistency. Their nitro cold brew was very good - smooth and bold. Even though there was a line, it moved quickly and everyone was super friendly. Overall, HiFi was a great find - I'm only sorry I didn't get to try more of their selections. If I find myself in Portland again I would definitely return for more coffee, doughnuts, and one of those awesome looking breakfast sandwiches. read more

In a region overrun with mass-produced donuts, Hi-Fi is getting donuts done in a completely different way, and doing it very well. If you want a glazed or an old-fashioned to go with your coffee regular, then that's fine, but Hi-Fi gives you so much more. Nestled just off City Center near Monument Square, Hi-Fi offers a little bit of outdoor seating coupled with a robust to-go crowd. Their crullers are borderline sinful, like crispy French toast with flavored goo on top. Yes, goo, because it's not quite frosting and it isn't really icing, it's more goo. And the goo is good, like really good. Cake donuts come in flavors like Mexican Hot Chocolate or Cinnamon Sugar, and the Simpsons donut (you can visualize this) is a winner in any season. The iced chai is a fabulous choice any time of year, but we had a seasonal drink, the Iced Portland Fog, Earl Grey with milk and I *think* a bit of lavender and it was insane! If only I could reproduce this! The coffee was strong and ready to go, amply offered to sidle up to any donut destined for your palate. Every time I go to HiFi I have a pleasant experience. The interior is a cute and curious one. You get an impression of what the product you're going to get is almost right away, and it doesn't disappoint. Simple, relatively cheap, damn good donuts. I usually get a pretty basic coffee and donuts. Their drip coffees are good, but I've never tried any of their more fancy drinks. I have had plenty of their donuts before and I love every donut I've tried. Mexican Hot Chocolate, Flying Pig and Blueberry Frosted Crisp might be my favorites. You can also get a donut as a bun for a breakfast sandwich. Its cartoonishly decadent and I don't do it often, but I tried it and I did really like it. To discuss pricing, I really appreciate that you can get combination deals on coffee and a sandwich, coffee and a donut, etc. They figured people will get both fairly often so they cut out a few extra bucks. If you're a frontline worker and have your ID or uniform with you, HiFi provides a 10% discount which is a very kind gesture. HiFi Donuts overall is tasty, fun and accessible in a time where food prices in the area are just skyrocketing.
