    Iced cinnamon rolls

Whenever we are in Maine, this bakery is a must. Delicious donuts, cinnamon rolls (iced or glazed) and this trip mini eclairs. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but call ahead to place an order for pick up. The staff is friendly and responsive. A few blocks from the Portland Headlight.

We were in town visiting from Orange County, California, and we had the best donuts that we had ever had in our lives! We went to the lighthouse to catch sunrise and stopped by on our way to New Hampshire. We also enjoyed some of the fresh dairy from Oakhurst Farms that is just not as accessibly fresh in California!

Glazed chocolate cake donut (June 2019)

3/5 for donuts (mix of pretty good and off-putting) Pros: -Nice staff -Large variety of baked goods -Inexpensive Cons: -Off-putting flavor on the yeast donut with chocolate frosting -Online order form might not actually work -- Short line around 9:00AM on a Saturday Staff recommendation: Boston Cream Overall, the yeast dough was fairly light and fluffy and the cake donuts were moist. $7.74 for 4 donuts: Chocolate Glazed Cake Glazed chocolate cake donut. At 8 ounces(!!), this donut was 3 times the weight of other chocolate cake donuts we purchased that day. The glaze was thick and a bit sweet but it was very moist inside. I'd consider getting this donut again. Honey Dip Plain glazed yeast donut. Not totally glazed, but a decent donut. Boston Cream Yeast donut with standard vanilla pudding filling (not overly sweet) and chocolate icing. This was fine, but I wouldn't order again. Chocolate Frosted Glazed yeast donut topped again with chocolate icing. The chocolate icing on this one tasted really off--different than the frosting on the Boston Cream. We couldn't get past it--avoid!

Awesome bakery! Great variety of doughnuts, cookies, pies, breads, and drink selection. They use real meringue on their pies. Ricotta in the cannoli. Doughnuts are the fluffy doughy type and are delicious. It's refreshing to find a bakery that still makes goodies the "old fashioned " way. They also have a great selection of "Natalie's" brand juices.

I've been going to The Cookie Jar since high school- over 55 years. My favorite thing is their carrot cake- it's just out of this world!

I tried the raspberry bear claw today. It was very good but isn't going to replace the raspberry cream turnovers in my affections.

French Toast and Little Bird were great. Definitely to be tried. For drip coffee, you can pick from one of the four and I went for a dark roast which tasted okay. It did not disappoint at all and deserves all the hype/love it gets from the reviews. Tucked away in an area that is mostly industrial/business headquarters area. You will easily spot it though from the beautifully done artwork on the wall. It is a small building so hopefully you can time it well to avoid huge rush/crowds. They had roughly 7-8 tables with some 2-person and some 4-person tables if you are looking to enjoy your food here. All of the staff we interacted with were very friendly and welcoming. They had so many tempting sounding breakfast sandwiches it was difficult to pick. I ended up going with their breakfast burrito and my wife got the Pine Point. Both were phenomenal and would be no brainers to order again, but with so many choices we would likely choose other new ones. My wife loved the bread used and the corned beef were perfectly made! The breakfast burrito was packed full with zero complaints. Drink wise we each got an iced latte, my wife got the mocha and I got the honeycomb latte. Both were very solid with a good amount of flavor to them. Lastly before leaving we each picked out a donut to have when we got home, a blueberry and a Maine maple. Definitely a spot we look forward to returning to in the future. Add this to your places to check out as a local or tourist!

The interior of the donut shop is stylish and welcoming, and I saw a few bar seats if you want to stay to eat. There were plenty of flavors; we ended up trying the Portland Fog (i.e. lavender + earl grey), maple cruller, and chocolate & sea salt cruller. Service at the counter was quick. The donuts were all tasty! I actually liked the Portland Fog donut texture better than the crullers, which were nice and airy but a bit soggy/limp for me. The Portland Fog was especially delicious -- I love a lavender + earl grey combo -- though I wish it was 10% lighter on the lavender flavor. The chocolate & sea salt flavor combo was also delicious (though you can never go wrong with that flavor pairing). I will flag for those with dietary restrictions that there are unfortunately no vegan or vegetarian donuts here, since they fry all their donuts in lard. Overall, a pleasant experience. I'm looking forward to trying more flavors!

Scratch Baking Co. in South Portland makes the best bagels I've had outside of the Tri-State area--hands down. The texture is unreal: plush and chewy on the inside with that perfect crusty exterior that gives the ideal bite. They've got a unique setup too--grab your bagels and then choose a "rip and dip" style tub of cream cheese (about $2 each). Two bagels plus two cream cheeses came out to around $8--great quality and value. Beyond bagels, they've got sweet pastries, breakfast sandwiches, and a bunch of local Maine goodies. Definitely plan to come back every time I'm in Portland. Service was also very helpful and friendly to help you navigate as a tourist. Pro tip: there are two locations, they're closed Tuesdays, and parking on the street can be a bit tricky--so plan ahead. But the bagels are 100% worth the effort.

Holy Donut opened their first Portland location back in 2012, and they now have five locations around the state, including this DT location which is probably their busiest. The Good: *Vegan & Gluten-free offerings--but they're not synonymous! Check the fine print or ask. *Coast-to-Coast shopping options, including vending machines (we saw some at PWM). *Online ordering available for pickup. Tbh this is probably the way to get them, as you can skip the line and go straight to the back at the pickup window and just get your stuff right quick. You're welcome. *Donuts are made daily from scratch and feature seasonal and limited flavors. The Meh: *You'll most likely have to pay for parking at this DT location. *You'll also most likely encounter a large line to order from, depending on the time of day. When we walked by earlier before lunch it was HUGE, but after lunch it was down to manageable ±10 people ifo of us, and it did move pretty quick, as well. I mean, it is just donuts ffs. It shouldn't take you more than a few minutes to decide. The Ugly: *Pricing is a bit obscene at ±$5/ea, but it's to be expected in a extremely popular area full of tourists and cruises. *Take this with a grain of salt, as I'm very particular about donuts in general, but I found them to be very heavy and just OK. Also, the flavors could've been punchier, as I found the taste a little too muted for my liking. Conclusion: Definitely not worth a long wait or the price imo, but if you're in the area, the line is short, and you have $5 burning a hole in your pocket then I say go for it. Because, evidently, I'm in the minority judging by the popularity and reviews. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Vanilla holy cannoli: 5 stars - again, love the texture of the donut, classic flavor with the cannoli cream; I would gladly eat a whole one of these!
