This restaurant wasn't bad.. but it really didn't blow anyone in our party away. Which was unfortunate because it's such a cute/vibey spot in a great location.
Hide+Seek is relatively new, which could be why they have some kinks to work out. When we got there for our reservation time our table wasn't ready, so we went upstairs to the bar to order a drink. About 15 mins after our reservation was supposed to start, I went downstairs to see if our table was almost ready, I'm told by the host that they just need a *few* more minutes, I ask if I should wait down here or go back upstairs, and he assures me our table will be upstairs so I can wait up there.
Another 30 minutes go by... and at this point the host comes to us upstairs to apologizes again, he tells us we will now be seated downstairs and reassures us that the table just got their check so we should be seated soon. He also adds that he is going to make sure we have some complimentary dishes waiting for us due to the long wait. We think great, because we are starving at this point! After a little over an hour we were finally greeted and brought downstairs to our table. When our waitress arrives, we ask for the restaurant week menus. She seems not so happy about this, and tells us that restaurant week is only upstairs.
I booked this reservation specifically under restaurant week through ExploreTock, and the host knew this because our table was originally upstairs, until he told us he moved us downstairs. Why not mention this to our waitress then, who was clearly not pleased that she had us? We already felt weird but we're so hungry at this point we're just ready to get in some food.
When we get to the table, of course there's no food like previously mentioned, which is okay because I'm thinking maybe he'll bring it after we put in our meals. We all put in every course, and he comes to the table apologizing again, he's super friendly and funny, and we really like him. But once our first course comes, we realize he's probably not bringing any food.
I don't love confrontation so I wasn't going to say anything, but someone in our party mentioned it to him (somewhat joking), and he seemed taken aback. He kind of laughed it off.. and says okay I'll bring you guys a few* things! He ends up bringing our table an order of the French Onion Bread, which was good... but there's four pieces, and we're a table of six. He didn't end up bringing anything else out like he said he would, but at this point we already brought it up to him once and felt uncomfortable doing so again.
The food itself, honestly nothing to write home about. The French Onion Bread was good, a bit dry if you don't have it with the 'french onion' part (which if you're splitting it with more than four guests, some will only get the dry part). I also had the Spinach and Ricotta Gnudi that just tasted like straight up salt.. waaay too heavy and it was hard to eat. I wish I got the Brussels Sprouts which were phenomenal! The Cauliflower also was nothing special, it had a puree that tasted like butternut squash, but other than that nothing that really stood out. For the main, I had the Short Rib, which was good.. very small portion of the potatoes but the meat was good. The dessert Mille Feuille... was probably unfortunately the worst, it tasted like nothing. I LOVE dessert.. this was the most bland dish of the night : (. I heard great things about the Malabi with raspberries though!
For being on Randolph Street I guess the expectations are higher, and after the long wait, the promised food that we still had to ask for, and the waitress who was not too happy to have us (although she was really kind too)... it just doesn't seem worth it to go back again. If I'm paying for a reservation (you need a credit card to secure), I expect the time to be honored. We have sober friends in the group who don't want to sit at a bar for an hour+ before we eat..
Overall, I hope they work out some kinks in their first year of being open. The host was very funny and friendly, and our waitress was nice too despite the fact she was blindsided by a restaurant week table. I'm not sure I'd be back though. read more
