We came here for my girlfriend's birthday and were super impressed by the omakase experience that Chef Marcos and his team provided. Hidden Omakase is located in the Galleria area next to the conservatory and Burger Chan. There's no sign on the outside of the building but we knew we were in the right place by the Michelin sign outside of the restaurant. Hidden Omakase only does one seating on Tuesdays and it's a smaller menu than their normal dinner service. It is $150 per person on Tuesdays as opposed to the regular $225 per person for other full dinner seatings. You are also able to order off of an A La Carte menu close to the end of dinner service before dessert is served so that is a nice option if you want more to eat or enjoyed a particular piece of sushi. Ambiance: the restaurant is a bar type restaurant that seats about 24 people total. There were only 12 people when we went on Tuesday so it was a little more intimate. The lighting is dimmed and the restaurant plays some fun music to keep the vibes high during dinner. The seats are barstool seats so they can be a little tight but you'll be on the edge of your seat anyway trying to watch your chefs prepare the courses. They also customized each couple's menu if they were celebrating a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary. Another nice touch from Hidden Omakase. Parking: there is a large parking lot in the front of the restaurant so parking is never an issue here. Service: the service is wonderful at Hidden Omakase. There was one chef dedicate to each section of 6 people which made for fun conversation and interaction. They also provide a water service unlike anything I've seen before. They pick a still and carbonated water that are special for the menu that they have. We had Eira water and you could definitely taste the difference in quality of water. It was a nice touch to the dinner. You can also bring in wine and any wine over 720 ML gets charged a $20 corkage fee. This place was top notch in keeping us fed, keeping our glasses full and engaging us during the 2 and half hour dinner. Food: Below was the menu for the night. Instead of talking a one each dish, I will give you my highlights. Each dish/piece of sushi was individually crafted as the night went on and the chefs explained the origin and nature of each dish as it was served. All of the nigiri pieces were amazing and you could tell they only use the highest quality fish. Some of our favorites were the Hotate Kaiso which was an appetizer served with Hokkaido scallops. This dish was so refreshing and the light texture of the scallops paired nice with the seaweed and matcha. The Santa Barbara Uni was so creamy and briny and provided a refreshing taste between fish nigiri bites. The Muki nigiri was a scallop nigiri that was firm, flavorful yet light on the tongue. Each nigiri piece was prepared with care and you could tell the chefs knew what they were doing with each wasabi and soy serving added to the piece of nigiri. We ordered the Akami from the a la carte menu and that was my girlfriend's favorite piece. The menu rotates every 3 months here so each menu is seasonal. Fusion style omakase, not recommended for traditional style lovers like me. They are currently on their fall menu, which includes a some hot dishes like thai curry and pork belly. The taste was good, but as an Asian person who grows up eating these kind of dishes, it could be underwhelming. Price was $175/person, which I thought was steep considering there was no toro, caviar, snow crab, and you only get a pinch of uni on the side. The nigiri was often paired with some "sauce", such as fig jam, chili garlic, or tom yum paste, which while pair nicely, I feel take away from the essence of the fish. I also thought they gave too much rice per nigiri. Upon finishing the omakase, we felt a bit unsatisfied, so we ordered the dry aged tuna trio, which was the best part of the dining experience. The toro especially was not too fatty, and the dry aged process made gave it a specially delicious flavor. Unfortunately this trio was $40 each, and our omakase for 2 came out to just over $500 including tip. The chef repeatedly told us how their fish are flown in directly from Japan, which is not unique by any means for a restaurant like this or any higher end sushi restaurant in Houston. Been looking forward to this place for a long time, very pleased with my experience and one of the best meals I've had in 2023. The name doesn't lie, it's tucked away in a shopping strip center, inside features a very intimate (yet spacious) setting with bar-style seating. 15 course menu with a la carte options, BYOB (with a corking fee), it's a bit on the pricier side and we did several add-ons (pictures). Our host/hostess were very friendly and engaging, ensuring our sake were filled throughout the evening and we were delighted they joined us in several toasts. This is one of those reviews that I hate to write because of the asterisk*. Is this one of the best meals I have ever had? Yes! Was the service amazing? Yes! Was the vibes superb? Yes! Then why not a perfect 5 stars? The price*. We knew the price going in, as the only way to get a reservation is via Resy, where you do have to put down a credit card and if you don't show they do charge you the full $175 per person. So you are warned of the steep price tag up front. You are no where near suprised. My only thing that did get me is they do not have a liquor license due to a school being near by. It is BYOB. I must have skipped over that line so be warned and come prepared. As far as the fish, everything was super fresh and unique. Did I leave full? Actually, yes, with all the rounds of food, I was quite full. I had always been told you walk away craving more food. I felt it was definitely enough. Would I come back again? Probaby not, how about if someone else was paying for it, HELL YEAH! If you never experienced Omakase, and you have something to celebrate, this is the place. If you just ballin', yeah come here. If you broke, there are other options I would suggest trying first. Even one of the sushi chefs, recommended Sushi By Hidden, which provides a quick Omakase, for about 1/3 of the price. WOW! Hands down my favorite experience in Houston. Truly a dining experience, the chef staff were absolutely incredible, so friendly, knowledge and so fun to be around. Every fish we consumed was actually shown to us with a backstory of the fish, where it's from and how it's known. The fish was incredible fresh, the uni was SO fresh and every dish had such a unique flavor combination that we enjoyed so much. The vibes inside were immaculate, such a beautiful establishment & decor. Loved the intimate setting of 18 seats, so dark & romantic yet plenty of lighting for some pictures that were encouraged by the staff! I thought the food here was fantastic! The fish portions are very nice sized, and it's a very filling meal overall. Compared to 5kinokawa, there's a lot less engagement with / stories from the chefs, if you're looking for that aspect. I accidentally dropped one of my dishes on the ground and they gave me a new one--so sweet but I was super embarrassed. I'd recommend using your fingers instead of chopsticks if you're ungraceful like me. The only thing that would keep me coming back regularly is the price. It's $175 per person. You do get 15 filling courses, but it's a hefty price tag. Also they are BYOL but their corking fee is $20, which is also on the high side. The ambiance is fine overall. Can't say enough great things about our experience at Hidden Omakase. Took a friend who was in town, and we Uber'd over for the second seating. The courses came out so quickly, one after the other, that the meal didn't feel as long as it was. Exec Chef Marcos explained each piece of fish to us and even answered questions. The servers at the counter also did a terrific job clearing without rushing, refilling our beers, water, and at the end of the dinner, even trying some of our Blanton's we brought. The glassware was all top-notch. The music is hip and loud - but in a fun way. Some reviews on here criticize that aspect, but we thought it really added to the exciting vibe. Last thing I'll comment on is price. This was a special occasion for us. The dinner might be $175 a head, but when you add tax, corking fee (no charge for beer but $20 for a bottle over 750 ml), a la carte menu (which I recommend), and an over 20% tip, you're looking at $600 combined for two people. Went here for our anniversary. They definitely make you feel special! Our menu was specialized to say "happy anniversary" which was a nice touch. The restaurant is small with a bar only seating set up (24 seats max). Going on a weeknight, they were not as busy, which we loved because it wasn't too loud and we got special attention from the chefs. The food was very unique and delicious. Recently surprised my husband for his birthday and took him here! I am so happy with the experience we had, and just how everything turned out. 10/10 for the food, experience, ambiance, and customer service. For those who don't know what "omakase" is it basically is (in a Japanese restaurant) a meal consisting of dishes selected by the chef. This place is actually hidden, and probably the most intimate dining experience you'll have in Houston. It's located in this small lot on West Alabama next door to Tom n Toms. When we parked- I had no idea where it was located. But the one giveaway is a display of comic books on the outside. Our reservation was at 7:30, so we waited outside until all 20 people had arrived and we were allowed to enter upon giving our reservation name. Wow. Talk about SECRETTTT. Loved it! Before making the reservation I had called and told them we did not drink alcohol and let them know of any dietary restrictions (no pork if there was any served just incase). They let me know that it was BYOB (they only serve sake) and they only served wagyu beef no other meats usually which worked out for us perfectly. When we entered and got to our seats they had these beautiful virgin mocktails waiting for us which was delicious!!! It was soooo sweet. So accommodating!!! I also had told them it was my husbands birthday. So they had added happy birthday on top of the menu which was so sweet of them! Very appreciated. The dining area is shaped in a U bar with the chefs counter right in the middle. Through out your meal you can observe what the chefs are creating, and see everything with your own eyes. The atmosphere was so modern and cozy! It was so much fun!!! The way this place works is that there are 15 courses that served to you. It's all the chefs choice. They served such different varieties of items which we had never tried before. Everything was delicious. Our favorites were the chutoro, spicy noods, and the otoro uni! Chef Niki introduced herself and was so sweet and accommodating to each customer, so was her staff. They were all so fun! Each bite of food was just perfection. Came here for the Noragami pop up special event and oh my goodness it was absolutely divine. I feel like it's been a minute since I've been this impressed with sushi. These are hands down the best hand rolls I've ever had in my life. Also that spicy tuna? Phenomenal. Best spicy tuna I've ever had. I don't know what they did to it but I had to order more. Their waygu was especially on point. I'm not usually a big fan of uni either, but I quite enjoyed the uni they served that day. I always have to have foie gras as my last bite and it was paired with scallops. Definitely a winning combination and a wonderful way to end the night. A hidden gem if you want a less intimate omakase experience. Lots of seating makes this place a great sushi choice for parties of four. Literally hidden behind a small gallery wall of old comics, you're greeted in a good sized and dimmed room. I really enjoyed how unique some of the dishes are, notably the squid ones. Quality is fresh and tasty as always. Luckily that the best dishes are set in the beginning, so if you're wanting to lessen your portions, the best time to do are for the dishes right before the desserts. I was really looking forward to this dinner, and assumed the price meant we were in for a real treat. Ultimately, we were disappointed. Obviously, I'm just one humble htown diner versus multiple diners who have left rave reviews, but to give a little background on my foodieness (floabw), my husband and I frequently travel just to eat, and have been lucky enough to try Michelin restaurants all around the globe. I wish I could start with the pros, but TBH, even the slightly positive aspects felt like a huge try hard. The restaurant is very dark and it felt more like a goth version of Benihana than a high end, Omakase. And really, it's only high-end because of the price and yes, some premium ingredients, but this is not a Michelin level dining experience. There were no complex layers of flavor. They tried to do some gimmicky tricks like using a blow torch to drip fish fat, but I can't say it actually added anything. Every dish seemed somewhat similar, and seemed to use the same kind of rice and vinegar. Even the plating seemed a little sloppy. The ambience was ruined by the overly loud music and the raucous laughter of the party at one end, not to mention the way they rush you out. Their attempt at a parting gift of a tin of mints seemed cheap. I would suggest just not doing anything at all. Overall, a real disappointment. Nothing was gross or anything. But a very lackadaisical performance for the price point and hype. Hidden Omakase is an intimate dining experience in which there were 18 seats surrounding a personal chef's counter. The chefs and cooks get to know you on a more personal level while you enjoy your meal. I personally love the bar table experience. Hidden Omakase is headed by Chef Niki Vongthong that night. Her innovative menu is influenced by her traveling experiences in Spain, Morocco, Paris and Thailand. I notice that her menu has subtle fusions from other cultures to marry with the Japanese cuisine. Each diner has their personal eating space laid out for them. There is the black serving platter that reminds me of a stone near the top. There is a glass of still water sitting on top of an interesting gold-plated coaster. I love the whale-shaped chopstick holder. The tasting menu features 15 bites. The dining area is shaped in a sharp U-bar with the chef's counter right in the middle. Throughout the meal, you can observe the chefs bring out mostly finished plates to be have their final finishing touches done right before your eyes. The chefs are very attentive to refilling your water, cleaning your serving platter. The atmosphere was very animated, modern and inviting. It was a delicious and fun dining experience. There is two dining times available and everyone starts at the same time. Our dining time was the second slot at 9pm. The chefs engage all of us at the same time and together so even though we didn't know the other parties, we felt united. The chefs started us out with a complimentary lychee sake shot that tasted sweet and light with little lychee bits in it. Even though it tasted good, the alcohol gave me a happy tipsy. Thank you chefs! I cannot talk about each bite because Yelp has a word limit but here are some highlights. HIDA A5 WAGYU - Shodoshima. Wagyu fat crumbs, smoked yolk. The twelfth course is the meaty A5 wagyu nigiri topped with wagyu fat crumbs!!! That is like wagyu on wagyu! Soft, tender, flaky raw wagyu on top of crunchy fatty wagyu crumbs is just double loading your mouth with wagyu squared in opposing textures together! One of my favorite bites also! MOULARD DUCK - Canada. Negi ginger oil, chicken skin, foie gras. Thirteenth course is also a delicious meaty bite. There is the bite of rice soaked in the savory sauce topped with a beautiful slice of duck topped with a tender duck liver topped with crispy chicken skin. Tri-level of all of the best proteins in one bite! OYSTERS (Cocktail) - Canada. Fermented aguachile, garlic oil. To start off the evening, our first bite was an exquisiting looking vessel that held our oyster shots. Just smelling inside the glass was inviting with a savory, garlicky smell. The aguachile was a nice drinkable liquid that is a lighter version of the green chili salsa. The oyster was small and soft. The first bite was influenced by Canada. One of my favorite bites in the evening! CHAWANMUSHI (Egg custard) - Anchovies, ikura. The second menu item is probably my favorite in the evening and only because I am biased towards egg custard. I loveeeee egg custard! It was served in a very elaborate small ceramic goblet. The egg custard was very soft and smooth in texture. The salty anchovies contrasted nicely with the smoothness of the egg custard. The delightful savory salmon eggs added a nice sea-taste to the bite. OLIVE A5 - Miso, sesame, egg yolk, fermented chili. The thinly slice of A5 wagyu was so tender, so fatty, so juicy.. How you eat it is first store the egg yolk with the chili and miso until combined, dip the wagyu in and eat. Then afterwards, you use the ball of rice to soak up the rest of the sauce to eat. It was soooo delicious. I will never forget you thought of me to try this with you! One of my favorites and I can still taste it as I write about it. It is such a hidden gem in Houston, hence the word "Hidden" in the restaurant name. Omakase means "I leave it up to you" and in a tradional sense it is when the chef selects fish to serve their customers (look this up yourself if you doubt me). So this means you are going to expect mainly sashimi and nigiri. If this is what you are looking for, Hidden Omakase is meant fo you. If you are looking for a fusion hodge podge of dishes instead of a more traditional authentic experience, then feel free to look into Roka Akor :) My husband and I had a famtastic time at Hidden Omakase. The ambiance was very chill and so was our chef. He created a pleasant and fun experience, learning about each fish selection and the differences between each fish and dish. What we liked about Hidden Omakase is that you get a good variety of fish outside of the typical salmon, tuna, and yellow tail you'd find at a typical sushi restaurant - and this is what you pay for. Their fish is fresh, very comparable to what we have had when my husband and I had when we were in Japan a few months ago. You get twists of flavors and there is an obvious inspiration of Thai flavors which only add to each dish. Presentation is nothing short of fantastic. The only average dish was the tom yum style noodles, served in a ramen-style with a soft yolk egg and minced beef. As a Thai person, I can see what they were going for and can appreciate it. Sure taste isn't authentic but the dish itself was still tasty and good. You get two shots of sake included in your meal that they made in-house that was so good, too! Very sweet and smooth and paired nicely with the meal. Even the desert at the end was fantastic and delicious. My husband and I left very full and satisfied. Overall, not a bad way to spend our money and time. Will definitely come back and highly recommend other sushi officiandos to give this place a shot as well! read more

Hidden Omakase balances both quality and quantity, while showcasing a variety of fish with new flavors. I had a 15-course meal including dessert, there is also an A La Carte menu you can order from if you want to try more food. Hidden offers an unique array of nigiris, such as silver pomfret, big reef squid, and hokkaido uni, while still bringing in well-known delicacies like chutoro and otoro. Each nigiri is balanced in both proportion and taste, you will be able to truly appreciate the fish without being overwhelmed by the toppings/sauce which offer waves of additional flavors and textures. The fish selection truly shines, and would be a great spot for avid sushi lovers. The a la carte dishes offer a nice change of pace, where you can try special asian inspired dishes featuring A5 wagyu, duck larb, and wagyu brisket. I would highly recommend picking at least 1-2 items, each piece I tried was savory and packing with flavor. In the pictures I had the noods and olive A5, each were very creamy and offered different flavors that made me very satisfied. The restaurant itself allows you to enjoy and celebrate with the guests and chefs, while also being large enough for conversation and breathing room. The staff itself are very welcoming, accommodating, and truly express the love for their work, chefs, and appreciation for their guests. I've heard so many things about Hidden Omakase this year.. and with Covid, I had to be choosy about where I wanted to go cause let's be honest, we haven't been able to go out as often as we like. This was our first fancy dinner out in months; so I was super duper excited. The place is located in a strip mall type setting, with a speakeasy "hidden" type concept. The facade is that of a comic book store. Though the place was definitely not a speakeasy - 90s rap and R&B blasted in the background, which was very nostalgic and I loved cause well.. I'm a 90s girl! I found myself singing to all the cuts BUT it wasn't very easy to chat cause it was quite loud inside. Yes, I love the intimate dining experience - one "U" shaped counter with the chefs in the center circle! I found that after they served a dish, Chef Nikki would announce what the dish was - and by that time, everyone was already done eating their bite. I don't know - it felt a little off tuned to me. Most other omakase timed it really well - so that you get the "taste" all at once and the announcement as to what the dish is you're eating! You are suppose to be able to eat the bite right away for the most accurate temperature and flavors! Now for the fish - I found that a few pieces were tastier than others. We personally enjoyed the Hiramasa (KingJack), Otoro and A5 Waygu the best. But you can't really ever go wrong with Otoro and A5 Waygu at any omakase. They did use a unique brown rice in all their pieces - I had a few pieces of fish that were shredded so it wouldn't stay in one bite. Now for $175/pp, I didn't expect any of these kinks. I liked all the other dishes, some more than others, but they didn't stand out as much as the ones mentioned. I can't say I was "full" after this omakase was complete either - as you can see, we're one of the only groups that ordered another meal ala Carte on top of the omakase. And I have to say, I enjoyed the ala carte menu way more than the omakase itself. The hand rolls were pretty delicious! And I spoiled myself with more Otoro and Waygu! Overall, a decent experience - worthy of a 3.5 to 4 star review! I can't say I'll pick this omakase over some other ones in town but I'm glad I got a chance to try it; especially since reservations are hard to come by with just 2 seatings a night in a small space! read more

NYC meets Houston. It has the ambiance of a michelin star restaurant, whilst having the hospitality of The south. Or maybe because nyc has one of the best omasake places I've been to and this is definitely on par. Came here for my 30th birthday. There are 20 seats, open kitchen concept. 15 courses. All of them delicious. Every course it well thought out and beautifully executed. It was interesting to see which flavors were pulled to make the dish. They also have an a la caffe menu to choose from if you were still hungry. We left feeling full. $100 deposit per person to reserve the seat. Just FYI. It is an experience. read more

Definitely not for me, but I'm grateful for the delicious food, friendly staff, and new experience. As of 2021, price is $175 per person. You get 15 different courses of little tasteful gems and a shot of flavored sake. As of now, drinks are BYOB. Note that you might have a hard time finding the place if you haven't read about it prior. The place is "hidden" because there are no signs posted outside - the store front simply has comic books displayed behind a glass window to give the impression of something else. We actually had to help another guest in the parking lot find the place. If the comic books didn't already give it away, the theme is very modern. Below are some modern twists: - There is loud but tasteful music playing most of the time - Food is made in batches before being served to you (as opposed to the chef placing it on your plate immediately after making). Food still tasted great. - Very large number of seating My wife and I were looking for a sort of intimate dining experience where we get to watch and/or converse with the chefs. Luckily we sat at the one spot (middle) where we can see them prepare food so it was interesting to watch. We felt kind of sorry for the other guests who couldn't see the action, but they seemed ok. Food is fantastic. I noticed that the courses start off as light/bright and ramps it's way to savory/fatty. The last dish is of course a sweet dessert. We thoroughly enjoyed every bite - I think our favorite is the otoro and wagu. If you want a modern Omakase experience, give this place a try but don't expect an intimate or interactive experience. read more

Delicious and gorgeous dishes in this truly "hidden" gem of a restaurant. The space was intimate in a minimalistic ambiance that, in its simplicity, allowed the aesthetics of each beautiful bite to shine as the true stars of the evening. The staff was welcoming, friendly, efficient, and very personable. A special thanks to the amazingly talented Executive Chef, Chef Niki, who created a masterful selection of offerings, each so distinctly complex and unique. Meticulous attention to the experiential was evident and so appreciated, down to the very best timing, method, and position to eat each bite for maximum enjoyment of all senses. She came by several times to make sure everything was perfect, and it absolutely was. I had been wanting to try an omakase for a while now and this did not disappoint and it was a great first experience. It is BYOB with a $20 corkage fee. We brought beer and sake. The service was really good. They keep your drinks iced and serve the drinks to you. They also give two shots of sake as part of the meal. We got the lobster roll off the a la carte menu and it was really good. Like it says in the other reviews, there's no sign for the place so just look for the window with the comic books. Don't get there too early because they don't let you in until the rez time. There's plenty of parking!! read more
