We've tried quite a few omakases like this and this might move into our top spot. Staff was incredibly welcoming and friendly through the entire experience and it felt like a lot of the guests knew each other and staff from coming in regularly. Every piece of nigiri was perfect and the order they went in was very deliberate and planned out. My drinks were never empty and if even the smallest speck of rice fell onto the counter, someone came by to clean it almost instantly. The sushi chef also noticed that I was left handed and placed all of my pieces on my plate so that it was easier to grab with my left hand. Excellent quality and tons of attention to detail!

We got lucky with reservations! Our friend was able to secure 3 seats for hidden fish and we were so excited!! The seating is around the sushi chefs and quite intimate. 12-13 seats in the room. Room was bright and airy. The omakase was 18 piece for around 1-1.5 hours. Well paced. Fresh seafood and nice balance of taste! The chefs tell you where eat fish was sourced and the staff are able to answer if we had any questions. Nice that the staff were attentive and water was constantly replenished. My top faves were the uni + ikura, black cod, otoro!

OK, so I'm gonna round up from 4 1/2 stars to give Hidden Fish a 5. The food is spectacular. We had Louis as our chef and he was great about explaining each course as he prepared it. Everything was so thoughtfully presented. The quality of the fish is off the charts superb. The service was excellent as well, attentive without being too present. We had 18 courses and then opted for an additional course because we all wanted to try the scallop. My favorites were the red snapper, the salmon, the black cod, the Toro and the Uni, but they were all great. I especially liked the sear that he gave the fish when he used the torch on a few of the dishes. My only issue with the experience is that it's so quick. They are very upfront about that when you make the reservation and and communicate with you about that well during the meal. They even text before you get there to ask you about pre-ordering drinks and tell you that you are welcome to stay and have a drink in their lounge after. When we were done eating, I didn't really see anywhere that there was a lounge where we could sit. I barely drink any alcohol anymore and we split a bottle of sake and I felt like I had a tiny bit of a buzz and I needed a little bit of time to just kind of chill and chat with my friends, maybe have a dessert or something and let that wear off. Plus we just spent $900+ on dinner for 4 people and because the experience is so engaging we never really had a chance to catch up with each other. I did not feel like the atmosphere there was conducive to that. You finish eating and they hand you the bill and it's like thank you and good night. We ended up walking over to the Mexican restaurant in the parking lot for some french fries and just to chill and chat for a little bit. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to someone looking for a wonderful Omakase experience. Personally, it's not somewhere I would go often, it's a special treat. I would probably skip the alcohol altogether next time and then plan for us to go out to dessert afterwards, somewhere on Convoy Street, since that isn't available there.

I really enjoyed our time dining here! The location itself really is hidden--you would barely be able to see it just driving on Convoy. I liked that the location has an ADA ramp as the main entrance. The food was amazing. I really enjoyed the albacore!! Slightly smoky, amazing flavor. You can order a la carte at the end, which we fully took advantage of. No dessert menu at the end. But it's okay because it's on Convoy anyway. Jenny was our server and she was really nice! Tips to save for next time: -Ask for tap water. I ordered still water and didn't realize that defaults to glass bottled water. -POS calculated tip based on total, instead of subtotal like it should be. Do your own math when calculating the tip! It really frustrates me that POSs are doing this because it is creating a culture where tip on total is the norm. No! It is supposed to be on subtotal.

Delicious omakase experience! I had booked reservations to dine here for my fiancé's birthday a few months ago. We love going and exploring different omakase spots, and this one does not disappoint. It was delicious for every bite. It was a bright room, full of wonderful servers and chefs. They also accommodated well to my shellfish allergy and had given me other sashimi options to substitute. I'm so excited to come back when the time comes!

Service is super friendly and an overall nice experience, but the caliber of the fish is not quite at the same level of some other local omakase spots despite being similar in price range.

Ate at Hidden Fish last night to celebrate my birthday! My last visit to Hidden Fish was back in 2020. Since 2020 the price for the Omakase has increased. So this is definitely a special occasion only restaurant for me. During the omakase experience, the set up is intimate. They have about 3 sushi chefs, and all of the seating is directly in front of the chefs at the bar. The chefs converse with you as they prepare the sushi. It's a fun experience and relaxing watching the experts at work. Additionally, all of the servers are attentive and also go out of their way to make conversation with you too. It's a very welcoming and inclusive environment. Every single sushi nigiri prepared for the omakase was delicious. The 18 piece - 90 minute omakase is well paced. I also enjoy learning and hearing about where the fish are sourced from and what part of the fish it's from. Some of my favorite notable pieces were the sea bream, the albacore (cold smoked in hickory), and the o toro.

Had a reservation for the 7pm seating for a party of 2 on a Tuesday. There was plenty of parking in the plaza. We started with ordering a carafe of sake. Our server was very helpful in helping us choose one to our liking and it ended up being delicious. The omakase menu is mainly nigiri, with a couple other dishes. Everything was amazing. All the fish was so fresh and tasty and the rice was flavorful and the perfect amount. My highlights were the sea bream, amberjack, Uni + ikura, chu toro, o toro, and toro tartare. Service was amazing. Very attentive from the servers. And the chefs were great at pacing the entire meal to you. You can also order à la carte after the omakase if you want more. Overall I had a great first time here. From the fish to the service, everything was amazing. The price point also isn't as pricey as other omakase places. I can definitely see myself coming back here again. I definitely would recommend try here!

I have been to this place a few times now, and it continues to be my favorite sushi spot for a celebration, or a date. It's definitely not the most economical place for a meal, but in my opinion, the money and time spent here is worth it. 1.) The decor: minimalistic, and modern, 2.) The ambiance: warm and welcoming. 3.) The sushi chef and waitstaff: super attentive. 4.) The food: phenomenal Chef Peter has been my sushi chef the last two times, and the man does not miss. He knocked it out of the park both times. He puts a great deal of care in what he does, and he makes the entire experience very pleasant. He immediately noticed which hand I was picking up my sushi with, and adjusted the orientation of how he would place them on the plate for me so I would have an easier time. He engages in just enough small talk to keep the customer's engaged without taking over the experience. The waitstaff have great recommendations for sake pairings with the menu and incorporate the customer's preferences flawlessly. My girlfriend and I aren't terribly big on sake, but we decided to get a bottle based on the waiter's recommendation, and it worked beautifully. They are also ready to fill up waters, provide wet wipes and clean up any trash as soon as it is needed. The first couple of times I came here, my favorite sushi was a black cod piece they had that unfortunately wasn't available this last time however, it mattered little. Every piece of sushi was wonderful in its own right, and I have absolutely 0 complaints. Some highlights were the o toro, the uni+ikura, the sea bream and last but not least the striped bass. I am already looking forward to our next visit.

Hidden Fish lives up to its name, tucked discreetly behind El Gordo Mexican restaurant, but once you find it, you're in for something special. This is an intimate 18-course omakase served at a 12-seat counter, with most courses focused on pristine nigiri sushi featuring fish largely flown in from Japan. Every bite was fresh, thoughtful, and beautifully executed. The counter seating creates a relaxed, communal vibe that encourages conversation among guests and interaction with the chef, which really elevates the experience. Service is warm, attentive, and genuinely friendly without ever feeling forced. The sake menu is well-curated, the space and decor are elegant yet comfortable, and pricing feels very appropriate for the quality and care that goes into each course. The menu changes constantly, and I loved every course--no filler, all hits. Parking is easy once you know where you're going, and while finding it feels like a secret mission, it's absolutely worth it. I'll be back on my next trip to San Diego... assuming I can snag a seat. Reservations are a must.

Was able to get reservations for late dinner about a week out. The 18 course omakase moved at a quick pace which was nice. The chefs were very friendly. The service was top notch with them coming by checking in and filing drinks often. Overall, everything tasted good. The rice is a little bit too sweet and some of the sushi was over sauced so you can't taste the fish itself. Food 3.5. Service 4.5. Overall 4.

I want to hear tonight for a date night and it was awesome! It's located in an unassuming strip mall and pretty nondescript exterior. But when you get inside it's clearly modern and luxurious. The service was impeccable. They passed my water refill test with flying colors and the ginger was always quickly refreshed . As for the food it was also high quality and excellent. They had all the different options for fresh fish including your normal uni, otoro, and yellow tails along with other unique actions like sea bream. Plus the preparations were very interesting. For instance they had a soy-based chimichurri that was excellent! I definitely recommend this place for a nice date night. It's pricey but you get what you pay for.

Food: 4.95/5 hands down best quality sushi in SD. The Nigiris were all super fresh. Overnight shipping from Japan and other countries Ambiance: 4/5 a little loud but cozy. There were only about 12-14 people for each dinner sitting. Service: servers were all very attentive. Very nice. It was fun to see chefs making sushi

I had debated whether to reserve upstairs or downstairs and ultimately chose upstairs and I was happy with that decision for the two of us, as it was a bit more relaxing and I liked the decor. There was however, a large table of about 8 people in the center of the room that were quite noisy. Downstairs definitely had a more 'hustle bustle' atmosphere with large booths and a long sushi bar. (There is also some outdoor 'Covid' style seating). We ordered sake, a couple of sushi rolls and negiri. They were kind enough to supply a complimentary birthday ice-cream dessert with a candle. Service was very attentive and as we passed the sushi bar on the way out, staff behind the bar waived goodbye. Parking: We were able to park near First and Laurel streets for free on a Saturday afternoon. A very classy sushi place. I definitely recommend a visit for a special occasion or perhaps if visiting nearby Balboa Park or the Old Globe Theater. Helpful?

Booking was easy through their website. When we arrived around 6:30, and there were still a handful of open tables so reservations may not always be necessary, but it's probably still a good idea. Our server was phenomenal and really elevated the experience. She gave great recommendations and even let us sample both the Cabernet and Merlot when we couldn't decide on a bottle of wine. We ordered a variety of dishes: * Spicy Edamame: very flavorful, but definitely on the spicy side so be warned if you're sensitive to heat. * Fire Fire Roll: light and fresh fish, but the seared salmon flavor didn't really stand out. * Orange Roll: also light and fresh, but I didn't really pick up the citrus/lemon zest element. A bit underwhelming compared to expectations. * Salmon Belly Nigiri: very fresh and a favorite at the table. * Crab Roll Special: generous portion of fresh crab. * Yuzu Cheesecake: served with three spoons to share. It tasted like a classic cheesecake, pleasant, but I didn't really get a distinct yuzu flavor. The space is cute and conveniently located in a shopping center with plenty of parking. Overall, the atmosphere is laid-back and comfortable. While the rolls themselves are fairly simple and not especially standout, everything tasted fresh and the service was excellent, which made the experience enjoyable.

The theme of Sushi MARU is truly attention to detail, and that extends from arrival, to service, to, of course, the food. Staff were incredibly attentive and easy to talk to, including the chefs. The food, I will comment on just generally as the menu is constantly changing (as is the case with many omakase): each dish was composed of pieces that complemented each other well and created a cohesive flavor pallette. Each nigiri was artfully prepared that emphased the quality and cut of the fish, and were complemented by flavors to further highlight that. The flow of the evening was non-traditional omakase, but it felt perfect. Price ($180pp) is not for the faint of heart, but is cheaper than others I've seen. The service and partnership between the sushi chef and the wait staff was fantastic and every interaction was well thought out. The appetizer wasn't my cup of tea, but the sashimi, nigiri, grilled fish, chawanmushi were really good. The assortment of fish (at least for this season) wasn't my favorite (featuring sardines, mackerel, etc.) when I would have loved some yellowtail and salmon belly. We ordered a negitoro cut roll a la carte because we were still a little hungry - this was super tasty as the quality of the tuna/toro is top notch. For dessert, they had 4 flavors of homemade ice cream to pick from. The sesame was incredible and the roasted green tea really good too. I feel like most of the omakase I've been to have 2-3 seating for dinner, so all the customers for that time arrive at the same time and everyone is at the same point of the omakase. At Soichi, it seems like each party has their reservation at a different time (4:30, 4:45, 5:00, etc.) so each group is at a different part of their meal, not to mention some parties that ordered a la carte or a different omakase menu (sushi only option, etc.) As a result, the chef is bouncing around working on a bunch of different items, and we had to wait quite a bit for each of our nigiri courses. The whole meal took 2.5 hours. We also felt less of that group vibe with other parties that is common in other omakases. Overall, we still had a really lovely time and glad we got to try it!,

Everything was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. All of the fish is high-quality, and most of it is imported from Japan. They do also source fantastic shrimp and uni from San Diego at times. Both sushi chefs are super personable, very skilled, and they have rad knife skills! Service from the waitstaff was attentive yet unobtrusive. The restaurant is diminutive and consists primarily of the sushi bar with 10 seats and an attached patio dining area. They do have a small parking lot which is appreciated! The pacing was just right, and each course was presented simply yet beautifully. I truly enjoyed this experience and give it my highest possible accolades! I loved that we were able to taste test three different sakes before choosing, and the carafe of sake was perfect for two of us to enjoy with our meal. It was also fun to choose our own special sake cup/glass from Ichifuji's eclectic collection for the evening I truly enjoyed all of the 19!! courses but the chilled chawanmushi, king salmon & all the nigiri were my favorites. All delicious and wish I could've gotten seconds! - Sashimi: Chef's selection of 4 different sashimi with a side of seaweed. I enjoyed them all but my favorite are the toro and amaebi. Love that they also fried the shrimp head and gave us a choice of salt & lemon or ponzu sauce to pair with it! - Yakimono: Grilled cod with asparagus, crispy fried lotus root, and goji berries. The cod was so buttery and cooked to perfection. - Nigiri: 9 piece nigiri chef's selection. All were super fresh, melts in your mouth, and of course delicious! - Uni wrap: I'm not sure if this was part of the nigiri or its own course, but chef let us try San Diego Uni & Hokkaido Uni! Both incredibly yummy. I feel like the SD Uni has a nice sweetness while the Hokkaido Uni has a slight bitterness. My group mostly liked the Hokkaido Uni. - Chawanmushi: Very flavorful and silky as I think they added dashi to enhance the egg. - Soup: Red miso clam soup (Nagoya style) was delicious. Super comforting and savory to end the course out before dessert. - Dessert: Hojicha Panna Cotta with strawberries! I usually don't like the desserts at most omakases, but I loved this! Great balance of light sweetness of the Panna Cotta with the sweet and acidity from the strawberries. [Service] - Friendly, charming, attentive, helpful - Shoutout to our Chef, Hiro-San & server Ken-San for making sure our experience was beyond amazing! Thank you! [Ambiance] - Classy, upscale, intimate - Has sushi bar & patio seating [Overall] - Made reservations for a party of 6 for my bf's bday and they definitely made it special! I love that they took pics for us with the chefs and even gave us a print out with a stand. So cute! - Would definitely come back for the food, vibes, and great service! - Each season they have a different menu, if you had all 4 on your stamp card, you'd receive a little gift! I definitely would love to try all 4 seasons but unfortunately I don't live around the area.

There was no wait here but parking was a nightmare and there is almost no street parking right around the restaurant which is near the trolley tracks. I recalled coming here for a light dinner with my husband many years ago and thinking it was good, but expensive. I asked if they had Japanese soda for my daughter because it was not on the menu, and they said no, but after we came back from the bathroom the host had found one for us. They gave us chopstick helpers and were very nice. We ordered braised pork belly as an app and wagyu nigiri, albacore, hamachi, salmon belly, 2 salmons, and unagi. I think that was all. They nicely split the order so half had no wasabi for the kid. They were very considerate and I appreciated it. The food however took a while to come out. The braised pork belly was ok, but the fat had not rendered as well as at some other places so we ate around it. The flavor was good though. The hamachi was probably the best item-tender and tasty. The albacore was standard and a generous piece, but the salmon was a bit tough and my kid who usually inhales salmon tasted and then left the salmon. The wagyu had good flavor but was surprisingly chewy. For $26 I would expect it to melt in your mouth but it was not easy to bite through. The eel was very tender but had a weird taste, and was disappointing. I found myself chewing on a scale from maybe the salmon and was overall underwhelmed by the food. The bill for a soda and the sushi came to almost $150 after tax and tip for me and a 6-year old. Usually my husband and I and my kid go to places with better quality and pay the same price for the three of us. Will not be back.

It looks like most of the other tables were reserved for reservations. The decor is modern and very clean and chic. They also had a high chair and was accommodating with our baby. Food was incredible and the quality of the fish is evident throughout. We started with the mixed shrimp and vegetable tempura - light crispy batter, really good. The sashimi champaloo came with 12 pieces of sashimi, salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and the fish of the day was albacore. For rolls, we got the Luna Lemon, Maru's Sushi Toro, and Hamachi Hiro. The rolls were a good size and I loved how each had a fun twist (but at the same time not TOO crazy with their combinations like some other sushi places). You can tell it was designed with intention and each roll had a nice balance. The Luna Lemon roll was great with spicy tuna inside, salmon outside, and the soy dressing and shallot oil put it over the top. The Maru's Sushi - Toro roll looked so good in the photos so I knew we had to order it. The negitoro was delicious and did not disappoint. The Hamachi Hiro roll was hearty and loved the combination of yellowtail outside the shrimp tempura in the inside. We were blown away by how fast the service is. The staff was friendly and on top of everything, and the food came out REALLY fast. For example, when we ordered an extra roll at the end, it came out in maybe 3 minutes and we were shocked. Highly recommend!

We ordered takeout, and the food was packaged well!…read more We ordered the: -Sashimi champloo ($31.95): This had twelve pieces of prime cuts of salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and chef's choice. Every piece was delicious! -Chirashi bowl ($30.95): I really enjoyed the sushi rice in this bowl since not every restaurant does quality sushi rice. The sashimi was pretty good, but quality wise the sashimi champloo was definitely superior. -Salmon mango roll ($9.50): This had spicy salmon, mango, and ume furikake. This was quite tasty, and definitely had a kick to it. -Maru Maru roll ($9.50): This had imitation crab meat, shrimp tempura, and avocado. A basic roll but still good. -Chicken katsu curry don ($16.95): This was disappointing because the portion was quite small for the price. I do like how the curry was packaged separately. All in all, Hakumaru has quality sashimi and rolls, but could work on portion size for chicken katsu curry don.
