I used Hicks to move from Ithaca (where I was living in a small studio apartment) to Boston mostly because they were the only movers I could find in the Ithaca area who would move me out of New York state. Steve (the owner) came to my apartment and gave me a free quote (they will pack you up and move you or just move you--I got the quote for both, but ultimately I just had them move me). On the day of the move, they were about 45 minutes late, but Steve called me promptly to let me know they were running a little late. They sent four guys and they had loaded all of my stuff in the truck in about 20 minutes. Only two of the guys (and their adorable dog) drove my stuff to Boston, but they were equally speedy moving my stuff into my condo. They were very attentive to the rooms that I had indicated on the boxes, and they were very careful of our newly finished wood floors. They were professional, friendly, and went out of their way to be helpful. If I'm ever living in the Ithaca area again, I would definitely use them. read more

I just had the most unsavory conversation with a woman from this company. I am appalled that someone could be so condescending to someone that is trying to give them business. I'm set to move to Manhattan in mid September to start my career at a firm. I got a quote from this company and wanted to see if the moving quote I got ($740 for 10 boxes) would be less if I had less boxes. I also wanted to see what it was based on given that I didn't tell them what is in the boxes when I requested a quote (only clothing, bedding, and shoes). She told me that it is based on weight and that her husband calculated it (this was the first sign that I should maybe be speaking to the husband and not her). I then asked what would happen if it was less boxes. She replied that it would have to be "worth their while." Basically that they didn't want my business unless it was worth it to them. This point angered me. I think it's fair to know how a quote is calculated. Furthermore, if you choose business based on what move is worthwhile, maybe this should be listed somewhere. Maybe charge a minimum for all moves to Manhattan and explicitly state this. I don't have an issue paying the $740, I just wanted to know how that number was reached. I won't go into more detail about what was said because then this would be more of an essay than a review. I called the business line listed for your company and was taken aback and astounded at the discreditable, unprofessional and dishonorable conversation that pursued. Him (short, grumpy, and unfriendly): No Me (lost at abrupt cut off): excuse me, what? He (continues to speak as if I am bothering him): No, we can't do that Me (completely baffled and lost as to what can't they do -- move me on that Friday, move me at all, what does he mean?): What do you mean, what are you saying you can't do? Him (becoming more aggressive): We can't do that Me (now I'm getting tense): Can't do what exactly? Him (roughly and obviously irritated to be talking to me at all): We cannot help you, we are booked through into October Me: Really, you couldn't have called me back to tell me this instead your company just didn't bother and left me hanging for hours without letting me know that you couldn't help me. Were you even going to let me know? I could have been checking with other companies. This is crazy, I should leave a review on your website about how you don't get back to people and are unprofessional. Him: You cannot do that, but if you are going to be the Bitch that you are then go ahead and try. WOW - family run business that consistently delivers exceptional customer service ... Yuck, it should not be called moving AND STORAGE because they don't offer storage. I called and inquired about storage and the lady was rude. They haven't offered self storage since 2010. I guess they also have not updated their website since 2010. I'd look elsewhere. I figured that out during a one minute call. read more

Let me tell you about Hicks moving. I had an appointment to meet 3 movers and a truck at 9:00 this morning at my storage unit. They show up at 9:45. If you don't know the secret phone number they do not pick up at the office. I found the secret number and called Steve, the owner at 9:30. He apologized for not calling me and said they'd be there any second. Well, 15 minutes later they show. Three great guys, they did a super job, fast, efficient, very friendly and happy to move anything. No complaints about them. They worked for 2 hours. So, Steve calls and tells them to bill me for 4 hours. An hour coming, an hour going when it is truly a 30 minute ride. So he lowers it to 3.5. Again he wouldn't answer the phone when I called but did when one of the great guys did. I told him I thought 3 hours was fair considering I waited 45 minutes for them with no idea if they were even still coming. He gets pissed and says...you know, pay whatever the hell you want but never call us again and hangs up. The moving guys themselves could hardly believe he'd treat a customer that way. They apologized for his behavior. I paid them what I thought was fair, gave the guys some cash and said goodbye forever to Hicks Moving. I have used Hick's Moving & Storage for the last 4 years while my daughter was away at school. They moved her from dorm to dorm, and then into her apartment, including storage during summers. At this point, her things are in storage there and they will be delivering them to North Carolina in the Fall. We used Hicks to pack and move within Ithaca area about a week ago and the service was simply professional. We found our one-bed room empty in about 1-1.5 hour. Everything was carefully packed. They even took part one of our not-so-sturdy second-hand wooden table(one leg had been almost broken) and re-assmbled it after moving it into the new apt to avoid further damage. We needed to move our son to Pompano Beach, FL and after receiving 2 other estimates (both with northAmerican), Hicks was comparable and seemed to be more trustworthy. They loaded the truck in Cincinnatus and headed to FL the next day, arriving a couple of days early, but that worked out fine....our son was glad!! We were so pleased with everything - they were very professional and truly seemed to care about what we needed to move.
