It's been over a year now since my initial install and I want to 1) update on the quality of the product, and 2) update on the service the Hicks team has provided. First off: we love our custom door, it continues to be a highlight of our home (super important making a great impression as people enter). It swings easily and is super stable. Recently the bolt holding the door frame to the wall came loose (likely from a mix of daily use and our shifting soils here in San Clemente). Not entirely surprising that there'd be some "settling in" given that it's a fairly massive completely custom door - but still, it had been over a year since the Hicks team finished the job. I emailed and asked: is this sort of thing covered? Well... Myke came out personally and spent the better part of two hours fixing the issue - not only thoroughly reinforcing the door frame but also upgrading the other side of the frame with a new customer stopper to increase security but also improve the operation of the door. It's been almost 18 months since install and Myke came out free of charge. Went well above and beyond and shook my hand and wished me well. If you think "good people doing good work" is hard to find... I hope you find this review, and give Myke Hicks a call. read more

Update 3: Now I'm some secretly disrespectful person (first I'm hearing of my alleged bad behavior) who plotted all along to take screenshots of our communications (that live in text threads) for deceitful purposes. Please stop updating your responses to change the story and accuse me of some new bad behavior. The texts are our communications, I didn't call you and "press you". There are no other communications. They also speak for themselves. Adding a screenshot of your prior edited comment. Update 2: Last update and lowered my rating from a 2 to a 1 star to reflect the now edited response that no longer says I "haggled" for a faster time and suggests for the first time that the glass didn't break "on its own". So I'm adding a picture of the glass, and another text screenshot where Mike refers to spontaneous breakage and asking the glass company if it's under warranty. Not sure why he's ask them if it was under warranty if it didn't break on its own. Update: I am not surprised that Mike responded. I never "haggled" to get it done sooner. If I had, I'd be pretty bad at haggling for it to take 3.5 months for it to not get done. But as I said, I have receipts. I would not recommend working with Hicks. I have had a series of issues, but held off on a critical review since he would previously try to resolve the issues. I hired Hicks to install a patio railing. The work was done fairly quickly, but after less than a year, one of the cables had fallen off. Hicks came back and repaired it without additional cost, which I appreciated. Next I had Hicks install a glass and wood balcony. I wasn't happy with the quality of the work or the state of the job site, and again Hicks apologized and came back to make it better and clean up the mess. He was at times defensive, but again, I appreciated him fixing the errors. Less than a year after the balcony was installed, a glass panel shattered. There was no impact or area of impact, suggesting it was from a glass manufacturing defect. He told me the warranty on the glass he used was only for 6 months from installation (even for defective glass), so I'd need to pay for a new sheet of glass, but he would install it without additional charge. The glass shattered in mid October. It's now February. Hicks' communication has been really challenging. I pushed and pushed to get it installed and it took months to even get scheduled. On January 9th, the day he was supposed to arrive to install, he didn't show at the agreed upon time, and only later responded after I had reached out about him being a no-show to let me know that strong wind had blown over the replacement glass and it broke. I was very frustrated because this was January and he had initially told me it would be a few weeks to get the glass replaced (which would have been November). Had it been installed in an even remotely timely manner, it wouldn't have blown over and broken. So I asked when the new glass would arrive, he said about a week. I asked him if he could please schedule me for a couple weeks out so we have something scheduled and I wouldn't have to wait months again. He said yes, but didn't actually schedule me. I started messaging a couple times a week with no response - again, said the new glass should be arrive in about a week on January 9th. Yesterday I messaged saying I needed an update, and he told me the whole thing was too stressful and he's not doing it anymore. So I waited 3.5 months for him to replace defective glass that he had offered to replace (with me paying the cost of the glass), and then he just decided he's not going to do it. I was patient and incredibly reasonable through all of these issues, but the defensiveness and failure to communicate and follow through isn't professional. I haven't had a good experience with Hicks Exterior Accents. I accepted their offer to build a balcony and patio cover in January 2024 and as of Dec 2024, 11 months later, the job still hasn't been completed. Mike Hicks and his crew built the small balcony and poles for the patio cover, but left without adding a cover to my patio. I've paid all of the milestones agreed upon, and even advanced part of the material payment, per his request, to get the order placed. Mike said he received the material but it had the wrong color, that he orders directly from China and that he is having issues with the supplier. Every time I ask for an ETA to complete the work, he says he'll get back to me, but he never commits to a timeframe. It's been almost a year of issues and headaches without line of sight as to when or if he will ever complete the work. read more

Worst decision ever. Just know you'll be dealing with a petty man with serious anger issues. Save yourself the headache and annoyance and hire someone legitimate. Listen to the other reviews that talk about him having a temper, bait and switching the price, etc. If you're not naive and expect good work at a fair price, look elsewhere. We got a built in, louvered back patio cover installed by Hicks Exterior Accents. It took a long time to arrive due to some supply chain issues, but it was worth the wait- high quality aluminum, opens to let the sun in and closes to keep the rain out via remote control electrical motor, and the integrated lighting does a really good job casting bright, even light for us (which is especially useful as our laundry units are in the rear patio). This was the finishing touch on a large remodel project, but it is the only thing in the entire remodel that every single person comments on when they first see it! I have used Hicks Exterior Accents for two jobs now - first was to build a gate for my front courtyard and second was to build a deck in my backyard. For the gate, Mykel came out and worked with me to design a custom gate and then was the one who installed the gate (including painting). A few weeks after the gate was installed, there were some adjustments that were needed as it had settled a bit and Mykel was the one who came out to make the adjustments. He noted that there was some post adjustment touch-up painting that needed to be done as well as some additional cosmetic adjustments that he was going to do with the handle and lock that he will come back to take care of. After the positive experience with the gate, I had him bid out my deck job. He was competitive with the other quotes I received and I chose to work with him again. He has a separate crew that do the deck and they were also great. Prompt, clean-up daily, quick, etc. and the final product turned out great. I hired Hicks Exterior Accents to replace an old patio fence that was in danger of falling apart. I needed a contractor that would be able to build a fence following very specific HOA guidelines. Mykel contacted me and did a virtual estimate via FaceTime. I was skeptical about it coming out right since he didn't physically visit my place, but since I didn't know what the fence was supposed to look like, I figured, what the heck. At the end, the result is exactly what the HOA expected and the fence looks awesome! I wish I would have been able to stain it instead of having to paint it an ugly HOA brown, but it is what it is. Please note, this review reflects the work we received from "Mike's Custom Fences" in 2019, which now operates under a new name. This review is long overdue but will speak to the quality and craftsmanship you can expect from Mike's (now Hicks). We had a custom Garapa plank fence installed around our AC unit in October 2019, which still looks and functions as new, almost two years later (the attached photo was taken in July 2021). The team was great to work with - they answered all of our questions promptly, explained their process, and followed up after the job was complete to ensure we were fully satisfied. I really can't say enough good things about Hicks & the job they did building our deck. If we have more work to do, they'll be the first people I call, I trust that Mykel, and in my case Juan and Edgar will do a stellar job. We have this big ol' dirt/wood chip space in our backyard, we'd set up some cheap pergolas and built a tuff shed, had a stock tank pool...we were making it work. But we hit a limit as to eating on dirt and shoving grills inside of old brick deck platers. I caledl a few people and told them I wanted something curved that could wrap around the stock tank and feel like it belonged in the area. Mykel had some pics that i referenced, and literally nobody else was willing or able to do it for me especially for an affordable price. Mykel never batted an eye. He drew up plans, fit me in within a month or so (he had an opening, I'm certainly not guaranteeing his timing) and got to work. Juan was my day to day and he did great work. Always kind, always willing to let me in on what he was doing. I learned a ton watching. The deck has become the most used space in my home pretty much instantly. It's a massive life upgrade, and I feel great having it. There were no corners cut, I got exactly what I wanted and for something as unique as this I think that's pretty great. Highly recommended. Mykel and his team did a fantastic job replacing an old pergola/balcony off the back of our house. Mykel was a big help with the design, referred us to a structural engineer and helped select the finishes. Pricing was competitive and the job started on schedule. His team did a great job with selective demo, only removing what was needed to tie the new balcony into the house and cleaned up the job site each day (we have dogs). Mykel also made sure we hit our milestones as we had a baby shower planned and wanted to be completed with framing, ceiling and lights before. He personally came out to ensure the everything was ready before the event which meant a lot to me and my wife. If you want to watch a grown man hop up & down, throw tantrums like a spoiled toddler & scream profanities at his own subs in front of your neighbors (in a quiet private upscale gated community) by all means hire Mykel. If you'd like to have someone actually build you a deck - DON'T. We had the misfortune of hiring Mykel to build our tiny 130 sf deck 3 months ago. He NEVER showed up to a single inspection; FAILED 3 inspections; & claimed he did not know HOW to order an inspection - after he personally ordered the first 2 & his name is all over the City Permit website. Two months into this debacle, Mykel showed up JUST to fire his sub Dwayne (leaving our house exposed to the elements for a FULL MONTH DURING RAIN) & then he tried to pull his ONLY remaining worker Ferdinand off the job mid-stream to chase other work - the quality of which you can see from other clients' reviews, like Boris, Jessica, & Andrew below. Besides being incompetent, unreliable, and unprofessional, Mykel is seriously emotionally unstable. His own sub Dwayne stated he felt physically threatened by Mykel (I wasn't home, so this obviously has nothing to do w/the client but w/Mykel's own pre-existing fiascos). Mykel is literally incapable of installing a DOOR. He tried to install our patio door twice, FAILED, and we had to hire another crew to re-install it & seal all the gaps Mykel left. He is incapable of building anything except frustration. Helpful note for any clients already drowning in Mykel's quagmire: his attempts to extract "interest" from you for his own delays is illegal usury, & his infantile attempt to scare you with the Prompt Pay Act is intentional Bad Faith - that Act only applies to State Agencies. Mykel will try to extract payment from you based on his Moods, not the law. Update: Rather than address the factual problems stated in this review, Mykel Hicks hired some online shysters to batch out a sloppy cut-and-paste demand letter brainlessly THREATENING ME with legal action unless I remove my truthful review. So not only is Mykel incompetent but he's a BULLY that relies on INTIMIDATION instead of performance. Fortunately I'm well-positioned to deal with his nonsense, but if you're not - or just don't want an unstable, incompetent thug destroying your house - it is far better to avoid the walking disaster Mykel is than deal w/the disaster he'll leave. Mykel and his team were great to work with! I had shopped two smaller projects - a new double gate for the front of the house and a fence/gate in the back to hide the pool equipment. Mykel was the only one to suggest reusing the metal frame of the existing double gate which was in good shape. This resulted in a large cost savings when compared to the other quotes, so I pulled the trigger on both projects. His team did great work and had a good attention to detail. Before I called Hicks Exterior, I had a few other contractors come out beforehand and felt like I wasn't given any helpful advice or direction on wood/stain/design. They were more general contractor types that took on fencing unlike Hicks. When Mykel came out, he knew the look I was going for, explained the best type of wood for my budget and the longest lasting sealer/stain that would fit the look and maintenance goals we had. After spending months trying to get the company that originally made a very lousy fence that covered our water softener equipment (which is in our front yard) I finally turned to Yelp and found Hicks Exterior Accents. My husband called Mykel Hicks, he came out just a few days later, on time and he understood exactly what we wanted to do. The original fence wasn't working, was falling apart and not allowing us access to our water softener. We wanted to reuse the wood since it was in good condition and stained to match other elements from our exterior. Mykel sent us a detailed proposal, it sounded good so we scheduled the job. Since we were a very small job it took a few tries to get his team out here, but when they arrived they got right to work and in one day transformed our lousy fence into a working masterpiece. The workers were polite, professional and produced exactly what Mykel and my husband had discussed. A few days later another employee (also professional and friendly) came out and stained the new wood to match the existing, reused wood slats. I should also note that they cleaned up after themselves, there were scraps of wood from the construction but nothing was left behind. Stay away!! This guy will say anything to get the money, but do as little as possible to earn it. Then he'll gaslight you. His response naturally has all sorts of details about his good faith, but fails to acknowledge the fact that the times he called and emailed, I was very specifically not available for phone calls(because I have a job), or I responded via email promptly. It also leaves out the fact that he offered to swing by and spend no more than 15 minutes getting the garbage, and only if I have it all prepared and placed easily for him. And only after I had to negotiate with him for days. Too late, pal. Told us they would come on the 22nd. Came on the 2nd instead. As a 'make good', they promised they would haul away some garbage. Didn't haul away anything and blamed us when we complained. Tore down a section of our neighbors fence without their approval, and then tried to gouge him to put up a new one, and when they complained, they were going to put up the old fence which they had run a chainsaw through. The work was mediocre, and they left garbage and nails(I have dogs who could have been hurt) all over the place. When I tried to give feedback in good faith, he blamed me. Not to mention they tore the fence down on a Friday(the 22nd was a Thursday and the job would have been done before the weekend), didn't put up any sort of temporary fence, and then went on their Easter holiday Friday around 1pm. We had to make sure our dogs didn't go into the backyard for 4 days because of this. If they had come on the 22nd, our dogs would have had 1 evening of not being able to go outside. Didn't dig the postholes and add cement until minutes before they built the fence(could have done this Friday). The fence looks 'okay'. Really disappointing, since they had such positive reviews on Yelp. read more

First of all, I am absolutely shocked to see that Mykel has anything less than 5 stars on his reviews. We did a full hardscape redo on our home in Newport Beach. Our design team hired a different sub for fencing and accent walls to start. The work was AWFUL. EVERYTHING WENT WRONG. The assembly, the color, the quality... it was a DISASTER. My contractor was humiliated and said, "I know the company to call." Enter Mykel. When he came out, I asked him what he saw in the work done so far and quickly realized that we had the same vision and expectation. His crew was polite, courteous, SHOWED UP and did QUALITY work. The finish work, staining the parts we kept of the original sub's work, was done perfectly. Our design elements came to life with Mykel and his team.
