Our stomachs were rumbling just as Hickory Tavern came into view. So glad we stopped! If you know me, I LOVE CRAB CAKES! They had Maryland Jumbo Crab Cakes. Note, they say jumbo, but I wish they were bigger because they were so delicious that I wanted to skip the salad and everything else and just fill up on crab cakes! Crabby & Buttery! Perfection! How do you have a raw bar with no fish? How do you have a seafood and raw bar without shrimp? This place was on ESPNs top sports bar list and was the real deal. The food is good (tavern salad, caprese, great chicken sandwich for sure). So you should give it a go. The device is top notch and the kitchen staff does a great job and if it ain't perfect they'll make it right for you. I just think that this company has grown too fast and forgotten their customers. It's sad. The original location down the street is 1/3 the size and packed day and night. They listen to and know their customers. This management group, in my opinion needs a house cleaning. So they have some great salads. Ask for a cracker with it, nope. We quit keeping them. Baked potato? Nope. I think that the corner cutting train may end up derailed. Some great staff. Hello, Ate here after attending the meh Hickory Octoberfest on Sunday afternoon. No German food there in sight, not even a pretzel, but that's another review. We used to frequent the Hickory Tavern Mooresville about 8 years ago when we lived there and found their food bland and boring and the place smelled like stale beer. I'm here to tell you they recently revamped their menu and I reluctantly agreed to go to the hickory location ( where I now live in the area) yesterday to give them a fresh chance. I am glad I did! First , I was greeted and seated in quick fashion with plenty of TVs for NFL Sunday games. 2nd- Our server Savannah was awesome! Kept refills going, food timed perfectly and kept checking back with us 3rd- the food. Touchdown!! Had the appetizer platter , sorry no pics we inhaled it. Pickles, tortilla chips, pretzel bites, mozzarella wedges and these potato bacon fritter things were awesome! 4 dipping sauces including warm spicy queso, warm marinara, ranch and a spicy aioli. Little touches that were perfect. Mains were the charred wings with garlic Parmesan. Smallish wings but filling and tasty and the Reuben and fries. Fries were hot and crisp and the Reuben was filled with meat and melted Swiss and the rye bread was perfect, not soggy. Touchdown again!! Sorry for long review but you have earned our business back after a long absence. Also signed up for the loyalty club. Can't wait to try other menu items. Winner!! read more

Took over an hour for the food and it was extremely disappointing. This place needs new management and more cooks.

Food is spicy and the chicken tenders are not fully cooked! The service was slow for no more people at the time.

Great food. Up beat. Little over priced on some of the food. The to go orders seams to have smaller portions. I fell if you order something like chicken tenders and pay $13 for a to go order it should have decent size chicken tenders. If not got through a drive through somewhere and save some money. Hickory Tavern became a quick favorite when we needed to find a place in a pinch for a large party for brunch and then after another event late at night. To find a place that fits both bills in Hickory is just crazy! They're not just open, they are absolutely delicious (& have lots of vegetarian options) as well! They get busy, but they have pagers, & the service is great, plus they have a shop with lots of various wearable and giftable items. Conveniently located along the railroad tracks in downtown Hickory, it also has fresh deli & bakery items & coffee in the front so if you're running around downtown, or at the farmers market, you can stop in & grab something. Wouldn't it be ironic if the Hickory Tavern in Hickory went out of business while their other locations stayed open... Well, if they keep it up, they may just be faced with that irony. Here's what we dealt with on a Friday lunch visit: Service was awful. Painfully slow. Like, we ordered food at noon and didn't eat until after 1:30. Food was gross and over priced. ($8+ for chips and queso?!?) Their beer menu must not have been updated in years. We ordered 4 different beers (1 draft, 3 bottles) all listed on the menu, yet all out of stock. Dining room was stifling hot. Bathroom was frigid. About all this spot has going from them are the big TVs. No sound though. Thank goodness we were only really there for the Carolina, State game. read more

The Tavern is the closest restaurant to our home so we go there frequently for convenience. We have not had a good experience there several times in a row now and won't be going back anytime soon unfortunately. If it is not busy, it is generally okay service and ok food. The wings are the reason we generally go there as they are pretty good! The bartender there is amazing and if you sit at the bar there is always great service. However, the floor staff is not equipped or trained to handle busy nights such as trivia or bingo night (Tuesday&Wednesdays). Today we had our worst experience yet. The place was packed, as expected for a Wednesday. The hostess took us asked us to follow her to one table and said "oh I'm so sorry" and the table was dirty. No problem, it happens. She asked us to follow her back to the waiting area. Then, a few minutes later asked us to follow her to a bar high top table. We followed her there and once again she said "oh nevermind, I'm so sorry"... and we went back to the waiting area a second time. FINALLY, after 3 attempts, we were seated. The waiter came over and did not know what a "bucket of beers" was so we just changed our drink order entirely. When my husband attempted to order his drink, the waiter walked off while my husband was mid sentence and started talking to another staff member without even getting our drink order that he started to get. We are not ones to complain, we understand being busy, but this was a horrible experience. To add to this: Several times we have been given our check after our food comes out, when we would buy several more drinks if it had not been. I find this extremely rude and kind of stupid considering we would spend a lot more on drinks if offered or not given the check. Even on non-busy nights, wait staff is extremely slow to return to the table. This really sucks because this place is so convenient for us. Several years ago the Bride and I attended a Lenoir-Rhyne homecoming a crew of us went here after the game. It was terrific. We have moved now to Hickory and had lunch outside a few weeks back. It was okay, we sat outside with our dogs. I ordered the grouper sandwich. The grouper was more like calamari. The fish fillets were so small, they literally curled up in the fryer. Okay, no problem. Last night we went there with four others for a birthday. This place sucks. The menu is ridiculous. Hire a menu consultant. There are 6 entrees listed which are more like lunch dishes. Our waiter (No offense and I know wait staff is hard to find these days) was slower than molasses. He was quite polite and did check back but 20 minutes for a glass of wine? The food is edible but not great. The highlight of my meal was the side salad. I wanted the fired grouper fish and chips and I asked if they were in fact fillets this time. The waiter said he'd check and brought back a piece of raw fish on a plate. It was 4" long by maybe an inch wide. How on earth is this a grouper fillet? I wasn't impressed with bringing out raw uncooked food into the dining room. I wonder if they put it back in the refrigerator or tossed it? I switched at this point. I had the "Piled High Reuben." I guess the idea here is making it a triple-decker sandwich rather than piling it high with corned beef (three thick slices of rye bread - the center was toast and not grilled.) The Bride had a grilled chicken Caesar salad. It was average. Hard to screw one of those up. Out other companions ordered the BBQ Chicken Nachos. Well, if you call grilled and dried out chicken cut into chunks and then drizzled with BBQ sauce, then this is for you. If not, run! The Nachos were said to lack flavor. I tasted and agreed. I had heard this place had a raw bar (it's gone) and had been looking forward to that. I did indeed check the menu ahead of time on-line. I didn't believe it was a dinner menu. My bad. If you're looking for a place with minimal selection, fairly flavorless food, and slow service - then I'd highly recommend coming here. The restaurant was maybe a third of capacity. It seemed well staffed for the amount of people there. I understand this is Chain restaurant now. To the corporate management - rethink what this place has become. It's not what it apparently used to be. Friday nights in Hickory are usually very busy and the two other restaurants this place shares a parking lot with were very busy. We used to go to Hickory Tavern all the time a couple of years ago. Im not sure what happened, but food and service are so bad now. Cold food. I'm not sure how you mess up cheese grits and make them like soup but they managed to do it. Why would they even send that mess to the table? Slow servers. Terrible drinks. Haven't been here in a while so decided to come in for dinner since they had a BOGO burger special. The food was okay. I asked for extra crispy tater tots but when they came out, they were cold and soggy like they have been sitting for while. The burger was okay. The hostess was super friendly. But our waitress (Jules L) on the other hand was not. Every time we said thank you, we got no response. We didn't get refills until we finished our meal, which we ended up taking it to go. When we got the bill, I kid you not, we sat for about 15-20 minutes waiting for her to come grab the bill. We watched her walk past our table about 10-15 times without even acknowledging us or that our card was out. We finally flagged down another waitress who we asked where we should take the bill just to confirm that they pick up the payment at the table. Even after flagging another waitress down, she still walked passed our table about another 5 times. The other waitress that we had flagged down walked by and even look embarrassed because our check still was not picked up. I used to be a waitress too so I understand but they weren't even busy, only about 2-3 tables per section. I tip by the service and it's sad to say that due to the service, the tip was not great. read more

A great sport bar in Hickory, NC. A really large dining room and TONS of TV's in varying sizes and locations. Really would be the greatest place to watch the Super Bowl or World Cup final. In fact, there is a plaque in the restaurant that says that they are Runner-up for best Sports Bar in America. I really didn't eat much this time just an app of a fish and shrimp taco. It was nicely prepared, if not a touch over cooked. Then again I feel most places tend to over-cook fish. We all shared pitchers of Blue Moons, that were cold, and the company was and conversation was great. Plus the prices were pretty reasonable, under $20 for the pitcher and my food. I give it one star because there was literally 8 tables seated in the restaurant and we waited for over 20 minutes to even be greeted after being sat. We even waived to a waitress who made eye contact and kept walking. We would have left if it wasn't pouring. Eventually we waived down a gentleman who said he'd get us help and he brought over the same waitress who said she didn't know it was her table. We were there for 30 minutes and hadn't even been asked for our drink order. Mind you there were at least 7-8 staff wandering around and nobody even acknowledged us in an empty restaurant. A restaurant that cares so little about their customers probably doesn't care much about their quality of food. I couldn't tell you though as I didn't get that far. read more

Ordered dinner from Hickory Tavern through DoorDash, typically when we get food from there it's very good. My husband ordered the fish and chips dinner when the Cod arrived it was floating in the grease they fried it in. The sweet potato fries he ordered also we're floating in the grease. Needless to say we threw the dinner away. Very disappointing, will not order again. read more
