This was my first time and throughly enjoyed my visit to Olde Hickory Station. I was recommended this restaurant from a friend to use as a meeting place and had no idea how delicious and satisfying my visit would be. It was a 1 1/2 hour trip for me and will gladly make that trip again read more

Not our first rodeo at Hickory Station. Great ambience and location next to the square in downtown Hickory. Usually very consistent and food well prepared and presented. Couple opportunities this round, red beets in the beet salad were crunchy and waited a bit at the table before waitress came by. She made up for it and rest of the experience was great. My chicken on biscuits with gravy was delicious. Sweet tea always a welcome treat too. This is a regular go to for us and should be yours as well! Good Selling! read more

A few weeks ago, my wife and I stopped by Hickory Station for a quick supper. We had our dog with us, so we took advantage of their ample outdoor seating, which is one of the things we appreciate about the restaurant. Between the two of us, we've been here at least four or five times over the years, and I've also had several business lunches here. I genuinely wish I could say it's a restaurant I love and frequently recommend, because there is a lot to like about it. The building has character, the location is great, and the overall atmosphere is charming. Unfortunately, the experience itself has consistently left us underwhelmed. Every time we visit, the food is just okay--nothing particularly memorable or worth going out of your way for. The service has also been consistently slow, and on this most recent visit, that trend continued. We keep telling ourselves we won't come back, but after six to eight months we'll think, "Maybe we should give it another shot." Sadly, we usually leave feeling the same way we did the time before. What makes this especially frustrating is that the restaurant has so much potential. The setting is wonderful, and we genuinely want to like it. However, after multiple visits over several years, it feels like the food quality and service simply haven't lived up to the atmosphere. My biggest suggestion would be to focus on improving the consistency and quality of the food and to encourage the service staff to be more attentive, friendly, and proactive. A little hustle and hospitality can go a long way. At this point, there are simply too many other good dining options in the area for me to enthusiastically recommend Hickory Station. To those about to dine, I'd honestly look elsewhere. read more

Last night we had a terribly disappointing experience at the Olde Hickory Station. My husband and I are spending a lot of time in Hickory and have an apartment nearby to help with my daughter and son in law's infant twins. After a nice weekend with additional family in town for a special event, I suggested this establishment as I have had many good experiences here in the last 6 months. When we decided on this location, we called ahead and were told no reservations we taken, first come first served. So with the twins and their cousin, we had 3 9-month old babies. Very aware of the complexity of this, we brought hook on chairs and arrived around 5:00. The hostess tried to seat us at a much too small table in the back room, and when we inquired about a larger one, we were told it was "reserved ". . We were seated in a long booth in the bar. The waitress seemed very rushed and upon first visit to table asked if we were ready to order. We were not told of any specials, etc. Good news was that we had decided to be ready and get our full orders in quickly. We ordered an appetizer and cocktails to begin, which came out quickly. My Son in law asked for a fairly plain burger, but wondered if fried onions which were listed on another burger could be added. Waitress said " prob not... but I'll ask". It did not come with the added onions. I asked for my favorite pizza.. she said there's no pizza tonight. While waiting on food, we asked for a couple of orange slices, which we had taken from cocktails to entertain/feed the babies. Waitress said they couldn't do that because the oranges are for the bartender garnishes. I asked for another cocktail with extra oranges and thankfully was given one extra sliver. When our meal was finished, our curt waitress asked if we needed anything else, so we just asked for the check. No suggestion of dessert, etc. We were never visited by the manager to see how all was going... because if so I would have asked if this was establishment policy or simply a rude waitress. We tipped 15%... and let that be it. Note that the babies were fantastic... very little fussing at all. We kept all except the floor cleaned up after them. On our way out... we seemed to be on the waitress's way... she never said anything like have a good night, etc... but shouted "Behind you!" twice on her way to deliver another table's food, and as we were getting out of her way to leave. A disappointing end to a restaurant experience I'd enjoyed before. Note to self... not particularly baby friendly. read more

My friends and I stopped here as a road trip pit stop and were delighted to see the restaurant was accompanied by the store front. Lots of beer, ciders, wine, cheese and meats! This was a fun way to spend the 25 min for a table. But also dangerous lol. My favorite purchase was the freshly baked bread. Omg perfect for garlic bread. This part of the whole ordeal is what upped the experience from a 3 star to a 4 star Now as for the restaurant, it was okay. The cauliflower fritters were delicious and probably our favorite thing we ordered. Very cheesy and crispy and came with a tasty butter. I ordered the southwestern omelette and it came with cheesy grits (YUM!) and toast with apple butter. The grits were definitely the best part. I could've eaten just a big bowl of those. My friends weren't as pleased with their meals: the Philly cheesesteak (she didn't like the cheese sauce) and the breakfast sandwich on Texas toast (she said it just was over all pretty basic). The really down part was the service. Our server was obviously very unhappy to be there. She was pretty busy, which I understand, but doesn't mean you have to have a bad attitude. We arrived downtown after a long walk on the Riverwalk a short drive away. We arrived on Monday Memorial Day, when there was not much open downtown. We decided to lunch at Olde Hickory Station, but there was about a 20 minute wait. Service was good, food was a little slow, but the place was very busy today. We tried the chicken salad sandwich with a side of Mac and cheese. Was yummy and the Mac and cheese was thick and very cheesy. We also had the Smoked bbq sandwich with the fried okra and the fire and smoke burger with a chicken patty and side of steak fries. Aoli was way too spicy so we went with what tasted like a house made bbq sauce which was good. The bbq pulled pork needed a little more sauce so I tried the bbq sauce and it was better. The place was definitely overwhelmed by the crowd but since nothing else was open, they did their best to accommodate. We had a good experience and good service. Wow!! The food is 100 on flavor, our server was very sweet and did a fantastic job and the atmosphere was amazing we sat on the covered porch it has nice size tables lots of space. I ordered a side of steak to go with my salad and it was so flavorful and tender I was very impressed. The beet salad had all kinds of flavors candied pecans and goat cheese, green apple slivers on a bed of mixed greens. With balsamic vinegar dressing. My husband had his sandwich and I tried one of his fries they were excellent. I'm so happy to have found this place on yelp. We will definitely be back. I came for brunch with some friends and everyone enjoyed their food. The ambiance in this restaurant is really cool, I love seeing how they converted an old train station into a restaurant/store! I have to say our family had the worst restaurant experience ever! We have a medically necessary service animal who we carried in because she was very tired from long walks today. The waiter took our drink order and soon after the manager came to our table in a very gruff manner and told us we had to take our dog out immediately. We explained that she was my wife's medically required service animal and we had her current paperwork but he refused to look at it and kicked our family out of the restaurant. We visited for a late lunch on Christmas Eve. It was a nice halfway meetup with a friend from out of town. There was plenty of parking, lot and on the street. The building is in the old train depot and they've kept so much of the charm in the design. The entry area is an upscale market with local beers, a decent wine selection, meats/cheeses/baked goods in the counters and lots of NC packaged snacks. The restaurant had a good variety on the menu, but not so vast that they couldn't do it all well. (Pizzas, salads, sandwiches). We had the hot sandwiches and fries. The Philly Cheesesteak was big! It did have orange cheese sauce instead of the more traditional provolone. I had a grilled chicken sandwich with pimiento cheese and fried okra (and lettuce and tomato.). It came open faced so I had the okra first then enjoyed the rest as a sandwich. Both were really good (and more than we could handle in one sitting!) We also enjoyed a Pilsner and the west coast IPA. Both Olde Hickory brew and both quite good! The room was probably about half full with small and medium sized parties. It was cool enough to sit comfortably outside and enjoy the lightning show from our table. Our waitress was very friendly and welcomed us to town. Okay...I'm really conflicted about this review, because the market part of the OH Station is glorious...an absolutely dynamite selection of beer and wine and some really solid cheeses. That being said...the front of house staff was truly the worst I have ever experienced. Bad enough that I left. I seriously don't think they understand they are client-facing service staff. To the point of being insulting. Fortunately, I went right across the tracks to the Taproom...and everything there was amazing. Particularly their wait-staff. Nice place off Union square that has a little bit of everything. Inside they also have a small deli. As a family we ordered a build your own pizza with pepperoni, sausage, ham, and mushrooms. For a place that doesn't just specialize in pizza, the pizza itself was excellent! Came out piping hot, good cheese to toppings ratio and soft but crisp crust. Five star experience!!! I came here on a Sunday at around 11:30am. I got there just before the crowd and grabbed a seat at the bar. The bartender was spectacular. She managed a busy bar on her own with ease and a great friendly disposition. I ordered the Lavender Empire cocktail and it was delicious. I also tried the lunch steak special which was a sirloin, mashed potatoes and asparagus for $18! It was delicious and perfectly cooked. The space itself is also super cool. I dined at Olde Hickory Station twice. I had a great dinner so decided to try the brunch. The restaurant is in a historic train station. There is indoor and outdoor seating as well as plenty of parking areas in Union Square. My dinner was fantastic. I was seated right away at a booth and they didn't try to seat me at a bar so that is a plus for the restaurant. My waiter was friendly and answered all of my questions about the menu. I went with a burger and fries and the fries were steak fries and came out piping hot so I was enjoying that. The burger was cooked to order and had a lot of toppings except onions which I didn't want. I wasn't hungry but did get dessert too. It was called a Florida Orange cake which was basically like a creamsicle and was so very good. (there wasn't any left the next morning as I checked when I got there for brunch) I was given a tea to go as well and plenty of refills when I was there as I had a busy day and don't think I had anything to drink. Brunch was disappointing coming from such a great dinner. I love eggs benedict so when I saw the selections on the menu knew I had to try one. I went with the West Coast Benedict as the Appalachian came on a biscuit and not an English muffin. The biscuit might have been better as I think they forgot to toast the English muffin. I didn't like the muffin part. I was also disappointed not to get runny yolks as that is the best part. I didn't care for what I ordered and would not get it again. What a horrible disaster!!! This place is in the old Hickory train depot wonderful beautiful building great atmosphere you would think it would be a great place to celebrate someone's birthday like we did, but it was not. It was a horrible experience. An hour and a half later the birthday girl still had not received her food. Out of 6 adults and 6 children 6 of the burgers were nearly raw and all were requested well done. Server was horrible and had a terrible attitude. The manager came to our table to personally apologize and said he completely agreed with us, our food was nearly raw. He was cool!! we are not diners with an attitude. We are very laid-back and easy to get along with me my wife my daughter have all been servers in restaurants in our younger days and know how it can go, but I would highly recommend against coming here extremely bad experience. This is the third time I have been here and it has never been a great experience food wise the atmosphere and company was great. I only agreed to attend because it was a friend's birthday dinner. When the birthday girl finally got her food an hour and a half later the order was wrong as well three strikes you're out. These photos are of our supposed to be well done burgers. I don't like to be the one to break it to you but we tried this place because of their ratings. Ratings ranked them high on totem pole for their burgers. Well I got a burger and needless to say, well let me put this disclosure, I did ask for medium well, but received well well! Burger was cooked too long and not juicy or flavorful. Another person in our party got the chicken sandwich, and it was over cooked! Another one of our party got the steak and was shocked when it came with some kind of salsa on top,interesting, but not a good idea. The children pizza was good! The bartender was almost friendly but with the crowd coming and going it showed. Our server was also a bit stirred or at least that was the first impression. We have frequented this restaurant quite often over the years. It's typically pretty good but today was quite ridiculous. First off, for an appetizer we got the meat and cheese tray which was nowhere near as good as it has been in the past. It was just kind of piled on the plate. A kid could've done better setting it up. But the real issue was my husband's salad. He got a steak salad that he'd been looking forward to and as he was biting down he stopped and next thing I knew he was spitting out a push pin tack. Thankfully all he did was cut his tongue. But wow they took his salad off and a couple drinks but still charged us for my meal and our son's meal and the appetizer. Thank God we're not taking my husband to the ER or worse the tack getting stuck in his esophagus and it perforating, him choking, breaking teeth, etc. I'm so blown away right now. I'd be like here, everybody have whatever you want. That was the least they could do for such negligence. But nope. I'm appalled. Unbelievable. The bad part of this review is due to really poor management. The hostess and wait staff we dealt with are not at fault. This review comes with bad and good. First, the bad. We were there on Mother's Day - it was 85 and sunny! Beautiful day but hot. Absolutely no reason not to have the umbrellas out and up for service. We arrived around 3:30 with a 30 min wait for inside or outside. When our table was ready, we asked for outside and were told 'sure'. When we got outside there were 4 tables with shade. ALL the other tables were available, but no umbrellas. Why?? On top of that 1 of the 4 tables in the shade was available, but it had not been cleared. Why? When we said we wanted that table the hostess said it would have to be bussed - we said we would wait. Then she informed us, she was responsible for clearing the tables. Why? We said we would help and she agreed to bus the table. She was very kind and helpful. Not a big deal to wait a few minutes. While we were there, another table in the shade sat uncleared for the entire hour we were there during which multiple couples/families were sat in the sun. Why? // Given all that, the one thing that did happen that was very concerning was one of the hostesses sat a mom, dad, and their 7 month old baby in the BLAZING HOT SUN - no offer for an umbrella. The hostess should have been told by her LEADERS to not sit families with young children (especially babies) at tables with no shade. Luckily for the baby, the couple next to us who was in the shade, decided to leave because they were never brought menus or served. We immediately motioned for the family to move to the shaded table. We actually saw a few wanna-be patrons leave because of a lack of service. It was sunny and hot out - if you can't provide shade on a day like today - then don't sit people on the deck. // The Good : Mike, our waiter, was fantastic. Checked in often and offered advice on beer and food. The hostess was overwhelmed, but was very good as well. And, lastly and importantly, the food was very, very good. Came here due to a recommendation from friends. The entrance to the restaurant sells wine, beer, and cheese that is all local. Keep going to the back of the building and you'll find the restaurant. Our server was awesome and took great care of us. I got to try the Aslin Volanco Sauce sour and my friend had an old fashion. No complaints from either of us. We were on our Thanksgiving weekend roadtrip and looking for someplace to get food on Thanksgiving day which can be quite challenging. We stopped in Hickory for gas and thought we would check out the old town area. We drove by a parking lot that was pretty full. Low and behold it was Olde Hickory Station. We drove around the parking lot and grabbed a spot, then went inside to check it out. Based on what we can see, the building was the old Hickory train station. When you walk inside, the front area is similar to a deli/specialty shop with varieties of meats, cheeses, beer, wine, desserts, and brewery SWAG. After you walk through the deli, there is the main entry to the bar and restaurant. We were told there was about a 15 minute wait for the restaurant but we could see some open seats at the bar and asked about them. We were told they were first come, first serve, so we had a seat at the bar. We also noticed they have a fair amount of outdoor seating but it was too cold for that. The bar area has about 10 to 15 seats at the counter, a long table in the middle and several booths along the opposite wall. There are 5 TV's. I counted 49 taps of which 27 were their own beer brewed right across the street! Our server came over and took our drink order and told us about their Thanksgiving menu but she also told us they had some of the selections from their everyday menu. We quickly decided to try the Island of Mozzarella appetizer which sounded interesting. My wife chose the Steak Cobb Salad and I chose the American Burger and fries. Our appetizer arrived and looked really good. It was a nice big round chunk of fried mozzarella in a generous serving of marinara sauce. We quickly dug in and enjoyed it. It took some time for our entrees to arrive but they were very busy and there appeared to be a lot of food leaving the kitchen. My wife was impressed with her salad and said it was really tasty. They did not skimp on all the toppings and the steak was cooked perfectly. My burger was also tasty and I had enough left over marinara to dip my burger in it, delicious! My friend and I went to celebrate our birthdays here on Saturday night. What a beautiful place! Food was great, staff were friendly and service was great. We had a meat and cheese board, the beef short ribs with mashed potatoes and asparagus and some cheesecake for dessert ((the individual round ones)). The moscato was great too.
