We were "skeedaddling" from Carey NC and in need of dinner when my wife came upon McGuires Pub in Hickory NC. The pub is in the basement of a building which is not always a good thing but in this case, it worked well! The spiral staircase added character to the pub and the character kept on keepin' on as we entered the restaurant. The inside is brick and wood which gives a pleasant dive feel. The staff was friendly and we were seated promptly. It was around 7:30 pm on a Saturday evening so it was pleasantly uncrowded. We ordered Irish potato soup, fried cheese curds, the Reuben on sourdough bread and fish n' chips. They were all amazing!! I had the soup and it was delicious- it was their take on French onion soup with potatoes and carrots. They always have it so if you like soup- GET IT! The cheese curds were legit- the cheese was tasty and the breading just right. My wife ordered the Rueben on sourdough instead of the offered rye. The sandwich was a classic Reuben which my wife liked so much that I had to have a bite. It was great! Plenty of corned beef and hash with a sauce that added the right amount of tang. My son ordered the fish and chips. The fish was outstanding and my son and I both agreed that it was as good as fish that we had recently had in London- awesome! One note about the fries- the fries were scrumptious and came in a shape that seems like they shaved from a potato rather than the usual shape of a fry. The shape was neat but the taste was no joke- delicious. Oh, and if you like sweet tea, they have it.;) Overall, it was a great dinner in a great place with friendly people at a fair price. It was extremely cold! The food was great with wonderfully generous portions. Absolutely too cold however to the point of unpleasant.

Just love this refreshed old place steeped in tradition and memories. The OHB team has done some great stuff to cleaning it up and nailing the bar food category. The staff is all over it and you gotta try that Stout Pie thing. Delicious! read more

Good food and lots of it! We had Ruben sandwich and turkey Swiss cheese sandwich with chips. Hot sandwiches and chips. Service was good, checked on us a couple of times. Pub decor, unique to our area. A good place for good food and welcoming atmosphere. Went there 20+ plus years ago with my Dad and Husband fond memories. Same place, same good food. read more

Since the new owners took over, I've been in at least a dozen times, and they've crushed it every single visit. The food is on another level, the OHB taps are always solid, and the bar staff (Debbie still the best) actually know their craft. Highly recommend. And if you're lucky enough to land on a night when the pot roast is on special, you'll swear your Nana is in the kitchen. read more

Tried to have lunch there. Sign said "Please seat yourselves," which we did. The bartender saw us at the table, and yet we were ignored; told a table that came in AFTER us "be right with you," but never returned (they could still be waiting for all I know). McGuire's was pretty solid. My drink was strong. The French fries were good. My sandwich was tasty if not exactly generous. I was tired and hungry and looking for a chill, little place to grab a late dinner before I went to bed. And McGuire's fit the bill perfectly. read more

McGuire's is Hickory's downtown dive bar and that's why I'm a fan! It is below the ground and you have to descend a winding staircase to get down to it. Once you're inside you definitely feel like you are underground. It's dark and chill and comfortable. There is a jukebox in there that has received many a crumpled up dollar bill from me. There is also live music on the weekends. You won't find much in the way of a beer selection but by god the prices are cheap and the folks are friendly. started going here last year after a girl i loved left me. In that year (2018) i would come here about 3 days a week from statesville because of the vibe, bartenders, martine the cook and my friend :) , the jukebox, and just the ability to sit like a pirate at the bar and mellow out to some rum and pineapple juice. If you go to the jukebox you will see that The Greatest hits of The Cure is immediately on the favorites list and ready to play. That's because for the whole year of 2018 i played The Cure cd every time i came in and drank my rum. You can thank johnny g later for that one!!! ha!!! but back to the review. i have been to many nice bars in hickory but Maguires is different. The atmosphere, the food, but most importantly the people that come here make up the number one difference compared to the other bars. Its a very nice place to have a drink day or night but i have to say i always enjoyed drinking here at night so much better. Before this year i had zero friends and i met 58 new friends this year and they were all people i met at maguires pub. i hope that this place will stick around for at least another 30 years because i feel like this place is my second home. I have come here so often i know the exact food to get and drinks so here is the list. Pirates grog and food list: The reuban, the fitzgerald, or the wings. these 3 are the best. when it comes to drinks get 1 rum and pineapple juice 2 liquid marijauna, 3 mai tai 4 long island ice tea( a tad strong but thats the point :)) 5 bahama breeze 6 the jollyrancher!!!(insanely good :)). but never never never get the grenade hahahahaha :) the grenade is harsh... ok well that ends my review. take care :) read more

Me and friends found this gem on yelp. Here from Charlotte we didn't know where to go. We had to visit due to John g's story like review. Sorry for the breakup John G. but it was because of you that we went to McGuire's! The service was slow at first, but after Sarah pur bartender got there it was better. The cook was really great and the food was great! I had the tuna sandwich and potato salad. I've never had potato salad that was spicy. It was seasoned just right. Long lasting local watering hole. I worked with the community theater and this place is nestled in a basement adjacent. Great lunch spot with excellent food. I believe I have had everything on the menu. The Reuben is the Reuben I judge all Rubeus by. The pub fries are phenomenal. If you have a handicap there is a ground level rear entrance. Quality and consistancy has made this place a thriving , popular establishment in Hickory for a long time standing. Restaurants come and go but this menu has stood the test of time. I love this place. Trivia night memories, reubens, pub chips and a few beers. I like it because it has an ability to make you feel like you're not in Hickory. You walk down the winding staircase and walk into a place that hasn't changed with the times - for good reason. McGuire's is a great sports bar with a delicious menu! I personally recommend their pub chips, best in town! The location isn't the cleanest, and the staff can come off a bit rude at times, but the food makes up for the service. Sometimes, the wait time from ordering to eating can be awhile too. read more

This place is just your standard tried-and-true dive bar. Always packed and always a little slow, but let's be honest. No one is going here for the service. People go to kick back and have a brew. The food is actually pretty good and is always consistent. I love this bar! Its subterranean brick wall vibe feels like an authentic Irish pub. The food (salads, sandwiches, burgers, soups) always comes out hot and delicious. Late night it turns in to a hangout for the overly tattooed and grungy type so stay away then if it is not your thing. If ZERO STARS were an option, that's what I would put. We got there and they were OUT of almost everything. I ordered a sandwich which came out on wheat toast. What restaraunt serves a sandwhich on wheat without asking a preference?? If i wanted a crappy toasted wheat sandwhich I would've eaten at home. I ordered a mixed drink. The waitress Katie came back and asked how it was and I told her it was a little sour and asked if I could have water... and she replies "i hardly put any sour mix in it." I thought that was rude, but didn't think much of it. I go to the bathroom and she comes back to the table where my friend is sitting and pours something in it (we don't know) and says to my friend "this should be better but their wasnt anything wrong with that drink." Gross.... I didn't drink it. She charged me 11$ for a 6$ drink. The place isnt fancy. It's a pub. The drink was NOT worth 11$. I paid it, I tipped her. And as we were leaving she was standing outside smoking with other people and says to them "From now on I'm not making mixed drinks for anyone under 30. Only straight shots. Especially for that b*tch." WHAT?! How rude. Worst restaurant experience ever. I have never been treated that way. I would not eat here if I were you.
