Pleasant surprise! Went for dinner on 4/11/18. Probably the best fried chicken we've had in years. The menu offers a large variety of choices. Wife said her baked potato was perfectly cooked. Server was great, very attentive and friendly. We will definitely stop again when next in Lamar. read more

I got a Chicken fried steak and fries. The chicken fried steak was mushy and just fell apart, there was also a hair in it. My fries were very soggy. And my bread was hard. It was so hard it broke not ripped. read more

I love this place! Just wish that they would change their sign. Poor English: DRIVE SAFE. Change it to: DRIVE SAFELY!!

When we traveled through Lamar CO recently, we discovered that in a small town not much stays open very late, at least as far as family style restaurants. After driving the length of Main Street, we circled back and ended up at the Hickory House. That turned out to be fortunate for us. It is pretty close to an old fashion diner, except that I didn't see a chalkboard menu. The printed menu had sandwiches and full dinners -- lots of choices. The space was brightly lit, clean and cheerful. The staff was friendly; our waitress was helpful; the meals we ordered were plentiful; and the burgers and fries were quite good and arrived at our table quickly. read more

If you're staying in Lamar for a day or two or even just passing through you must stop here! Fantastic little restaurant!!

Homestyle food, homestyle service, local crowd. It's a bit heavy on the fat but you can get something decent to eat. If you bother to eat here don't skip desserts. Homemade. Better to eat dessert than the food if you are worried about calories. You can expect the small town stare bit so if this bothers you be forewarned. read more

Over priced and low quality. OVOID! We went there for breakfast, i ordered the spanish omelette first but as it can out with something that looked like cat food mixed in with the chilies i sent it back and got the veggie omelette, reading the menu both should have been vegetarian. Got it, nothing special except the price. $9.00 I was fine with the price because I thought it was gonna be a super good country cafe. Not the case, waitress was miserable, food was mediocre at best. read more

This place is average. Walking in I thought I was at a Denny's. They serve hamburgers, Mexican food, steaks and BBQ. If you happen to be in Lamar I would only recommend this place because there aren't really any other restaurants around. read more

Fantastic experience, this is the way I remember great diners as a kid growing up in the 50s. My son and I split orders of the Mexican omelet and the French toast. Coffee was superb and the waitress was attentive. Don't miss this establishment if you pass through Lamar. read more

Extremely disappointed with a name like hickory house you'd think hickory BBQ but they only had three BBQ items to choose from the rest was Mexican & American. The service was terrible & the food was worse the only decent thing on my plate was the toast. Should have just went to McDonald's next door. read more

Good little cafe style place. Probably the best food in Lamar.

Nothing special and nothing fancy at this small town eatery. Decent food and reasonable portions. Service was mostly friendly, although they seem to be chattier with locals. Asked for cream for the coffee, server pointed to the COFFEE MATE on the table and asked why that wasn't okay. Hmm, 'cause it's not cream?? Asked if they perhaps had milk - server went to the back and the whole lot of them gaggled together to discuss the disruptive out-of-towners (yes, we heard you). Total check with tip $30, lunch for two. read more

BBQ brisket sandwich was just right for me (don't like a ton of sauce), tender and tasty. Chicken avocado wrap the wife had wasn't too shabby either (for once I think I win though). I ordered takeout since we were just overnighting in town on our way through and it was late, but this place reinforced my desire to seek out holes in the wall when I'm in small towns and new places. Was not at all disappointed. read more

Outstanding breakfast, great quality and great service. Friendly help, portions somewhere between large and huge. Easy and relaxed atmosphere towards the south end of town. We were there at breakfast time on a Sunday, when the place was busy but service was still attentive and prompt. read more

Staff was friendly.. Food was delivered fast and hot. Prices reasonable. Restroom was clean. I'd eat there again.

Great food. Great staff. Bush, Sherri and Renee are the best. My favorite is the avocado chicken wrap w/ crispy chicken on a spinach wrap. A must have at least once a week. read more

We had burgers and a chimichanga... all the food was pre-packaged. The chino was a frozen Walmart burrito and the burger patties were the same. Terrible food and terribly high prices. read more

Good food and great people. The staff is always nice, definalty the small town diner feel. The food is great, a nice selection and is always cooked right. I have ate here a lot and I have never had a problem. By far the best place to eat in town if you ask me! read more

This place was great. The chicken fried steak was awesome. I'm from Texas and I know good chicken fried steak. The service was good as well.

We had a party of 16 and the staff at the Hickory House did an excellent job to accommodate us. The food was great and the service was excellent. read more

Passing through Lamar. The Slopper was good and filling. French fries were really tasty-crispy and hot. They make salsa fresh every morning. Friendly service. read more

Quite popular for breakfast. Very good burgers for a decent price. The salad bar is mediocre, but the Hickory House probably has the best French fries in town. read more

This was probably one of the worst places we have eaten at in a long time. The salad which was solely lettuce was brown and limp - not edible. Carrots was the vegetable of the day - ugh. The fried chicken was barely warm. The beef brisket sandwich - well if this is a specialty McDonald's is gourmet. The lower bun was so soggy it looked like a dishrag. I would rather have a day old hot dog at the convenience store than eat here again. Only gave one star because I had to to write a review. read more

Stopped in there for lunch last Saturday. Unfortunately...left my cell phone on the table. The kind ladies that work there answered the phone and I got the message where it was. The kind manager agreed to send me the phone, pay the postage, and take my word I would reimburse her. There are GOOD people in this world. Thank you HICKORY HOUSE! read more

Very overpriced for the quality. I had the chicken fried steak special. The chicken fried steak was ok, but the gravy was too heavy and tasteless. Came with frozen, reheated french fries and canned corn. I thought as a lunch special, the price would be decent. But, $10.00 for this small chicken fried steak? No. I had considered the salad bar - but it had only a few items and was $8.00!!! They were sweeping the floor around me while I ate. No telling how much dust was in my food. Definitely not somewhere I would ever stop again. read more

Biscuits were cold and hard as a rock. Management is NOT customer friendly. If this place had competition this place would be out of business. read more
