We arrived late in the day, near closing time. Our waitress was bubbly and friendly and happy, which lighten the burden of the day that weighed on us. Our food arrived quickly and my son enjoyed his burrito. I had ordered my steak medium rare but it was well done. The waitress quickly returned to the kitchen and cooked the next one herself! I stopped in Lamar for the night and my hotel room was directly across the street so this was handy for dinner. I was greeted as soon as I walked in the door and since there was only 1 other customer I could seat myself wherever I wanted to. The waitress was friendly and she provided good customer service, asking how the food was, refills, etc. The place was pretty clean and kind of old school diner feel to it. I ordered the salad bar and a plain hamburger with raw onions on the side. The salad bar was kind of weak and I had to pick through the lettuce to get to the green leaves. The hamburger was just ok, the patty was kind of dry and overcooked. This is a place that is handy if you are passing by on hwy 287 or spending a night in Lamar. I would eat there again because the prices were reasonable, good service and the place is clean. I would not order the hamburger again but I would try something else from the menu. read more

On a windy trip through CO, our family stopped here for dinner. The waitress was busy, but served us well. The food was what you would expect from a small town diner. My daughter was thrilled with her chicken strips. They were hand battered, not that awful thick batter on fast food strips. My taco salad was large and very generous with the guacamole, but missing the refried beans I usually get with a taco salad. The burgers were average, but served with lots of fries. This is a non assuming little place on the main stretch of Lamar. I had a BLT and my husband had the beef chimichanga. Our waitress, Pam, was friendly and attentive. She brought our coffee immediately and took our order in less than five minutes. The coffee was good and fresh. My husband's meal was very good and my BLT had crisp, fresh lettuce and bacon cooked perfectly. The prices were reasonable. The cashier who checked us out was very sweet and friendly as well. What an unbelievable food treat that was about as unexpected as it gets! Long story short, a group of friends from college had been storm chasing a supercell through the countryside outside Lamar CO. After getting hailed upon and seeing a tremendous lightning show, we manage to get the last vacancy at the Lamar Inn. The next morning before we ventured out storm chasing again we stopped for breakfast at the Hickory House. Two of the five people on the trip claim it was the best breakfast they have ever had. The food of choice were these amazing skillets full of hash browns, eggs, bacon, ham, and a last special ingredient of green chile. It basically captured everything I like in breakfast in one hot plate and then covered it in this foreign substance I had never had before (green chile) which only enhanced the flavor and added the perfect amount of heat to the meal. To quote my friend "It was just the best thing I've ever tasted" There were also rave reviews for the breakfast burrito (HUGE burrito) which was also covered in green chile. I don't know what they put in that green chile but I think it is save to say it was a little bit of heaven on earth. So if you ever find yourself in Lamar, CO, hit up the hickory house and you won't be let down. read more

The food is good. Big portions, little price. Not a huge breakfast menu but all the basics were available.
