The name says it all doesn't it. Hi Dive is a higher-end dive bar along the Embarcadero. Pints are priced on the 'Hi-er' end but none fancier. The service gets it done but isn't memorable. However the joy of sitting out in the sun along the Embarcadero make it all somewhat worth it and perhaps why we return. Food is standard pub fare but it's great for sharing. Location, location, location. That's what Hi Dive has going for it and perhaps it's more than enough on those few but glorious and sunny SF afternoons along the Embarcadero. Traveled up to the city to have some drinks with old friends. Since I was coming up it was their responsibility to pick the bar. After a few options The boys decide that Hi Dive was the place. It's stand alone , unassuming little diver right at the waters edge. Located near pier 28 1/2 it's kind off the beaten tract. It makes for a nice locale , but was about a hustled 17 minute walk from the Bart. It wasn't inconvenient , but rather nice - but a little lengthy if your choosing the public trans option. So the experience was on a Thursday evening . We all hooked up and began the drunkenness. Being Ironworkers I knew it was gonna get shitty. I shocked em by getting. Bourbon 'old fashioned' . My budd had ordered a greyhound which was weak by comparison.There was a few beers ordered but nothing significant. As for food , a burger and a fish stew were ordered . Which looked spot on. I'm fasting and got a Caesar salad no chicken which couldn't have been better. Service was excellent , but dropped off when the diver became extremely packed. However they did keep the booze flowing... Hi Dive started to bump after bout 6:00 pm. All the sexy professionals started to filter in and things got interesting. Tables filled up quick and there was quite a few good looking gals. People for the most part were fairly personable. The vibe started to get fairly open , resulting in a cool experience. So I'm drooping a 4 star on it. I'm giving it a stretch by doing this because Dive has potential. Maybe I'll drop back in sometime and update my review. I'm sitting on a sun-kissed old pier, enjoying cheap drafts (cheap by SF standards), gazing out over the SF bay at the coastal ranges, and munching on phenomenal french fries. The music is lit, the locale is beautiful, the clientele composed of regulars, the service exceptionally fast and friendly, and the San Francisco-Oakland Bay bridge towers stoically above me. Went here with some friends a while back after a day of sightseeing in SF. My boyfriend recommended it because he'd been here in the past and had a good experience. We got there a bit late and the kitchen was closing soon, but they accommodated us, which was really nice. I had a tasty sandwich and the chowder was pretty good, too. After photographing along the Embarcadero for a couple of hours K and I were cold and hungry. The Hi Dive turned out to be the perfect spot to end the evening. It has been years since I had a meal in a bar, I enjoyed the food, and cocktail. I liked being here. We both ordered the small Waterfront burger. The grilled burger was brought to the table with the top bun to the side. I thought it looked plain; looks can be deceiving, the burger was flavorful and cooked perfectly rare as I requested. I had the house slaw and K had fries. I liked the slaw and burger; I left nothing on my plate. I am still thinking about the Spicy Señorita cocktail and wondering when I can go back and have another one. The menu describes it as a spicy delicious margarita, a mix of tequila, orange liqueur, lime, sour, and Serrano chili. The menu was right it was spicy and it was delicious. read more

I really like the location (right by the water) and the crowd (mostly professionals around SOMA there for happy hours and sports fans)! The tacos are so good, I always get 'em every time I eat here. Last night, I wanted to try something new so I got a Downtown burger which tasted okay. I asked for medium-well, but my meat was charred and tasted a bit dry. Pat G. had the same burger, which he enjoyed eating because he ordered it with cheese, less dry and more flavor. Hi Dive has the BEST clam chowder soup I have ever tasted in my life :-)! Yes, the soup was really good and inexpensive. $2.50 for a cup with slices of sourdough bread. The potatoes and clams were chunky and the soup base is not too thick. I would go back here soon to try the burger again with cheese this time and definitely get more clam chowder soup. Last night, they had the Giants game on and during the bottom of the first inning, one of the bartenders was walking around the bar waving 2 FREE tickets to the game. I was quite disposed to love Hi Dive -- view of the water (not the best view, granted, but still), divey-but-kind-of-upscale vibe, TVs with NLCS Game 3 playing, rowdy diners cheering on the Giants. But the lackluster food disappointed big time. We ordered the fish and chips and fish tacos. The fish and chips were bland and a little overcooked. It seemed that the fish were not even salted. The tartar sauce it came with was also lacking in flavor. The chips were alright and most definitely unremarkable. The fish tacos were the same. I drenched mine with salsa but it could not be salvaged. I would have asked our waitress if they had hot sauce, but since she was only seen by us when we ordered and paid, that proved to be an impossibility. I have to say, though, that the serving was generous, but I have to wonder why they skimp on the tortilla. A lot of fish in one flimsy tortilla made for a more-than-usual messy eating. Using two tortillas for each taco would have been really appreciated by this slow eater (slow eating = moist and weak tortilla = messy eating = no bueno). The bright spot of this lunch was the vegetarian chili (which came with my fish taco plate). If I ever were tempted to go back to Hi Dive, that is most definitely I will be going for. It was perfectly spiced and would seem like a great lunch for those chilly SF days. This is really a two-star place but for the reasons mentioned in the first paragraph, I would give them a 2.5, but I cannot round them off to 3 in good conscience because of their rather high price. read more

We stopped here because the ambiance was intriguing. I loved that there was an option to sit outdoors or indoors. From the moment you walked in you were greeted with friendly Hellos. Great place for informal get together's. * Looking to meet friends after work, it's a nice place to catch a cocktail and appetizer with friends or coworkers. * The type of person who likes tasty cocktails or good beer, they have quite a selection. Came here to meet my boy for drinks after work on a Wednesday. It was my first time coming, and I was looking forward to it, given the (semi) positive reviews, location, and because I had a rare night to kick back. We rolled in around 8:30, and the place wasn't too busy so we were able to grab a spot no problem. We opted for a table at the patio, and it was definitely the play. There are about 10 tables outside, and all of them give you a view of the bay and even the embarcadero, as the restaurant is almost directly under the bay bridge. It's worth coming just for the outdoor seating honestly, especially as it gives you a nice place to unwind and relax from the work week. The beer selection was aaaaight. Nothing worth writing about, but it did the trick. Bartender was awful though, sadly. Uninterested, slow, and unfriendly (except when you leave a tip). We all know the type. I'll move on. We were a little hungry so we ordered some fries, which were dank as hell. Shoutout to everyone who recommended those for real. While the majority of the food here is your typical bar fare, the fries are just delicious, period. Overall though, this place has a great ambience, and most importantly a terrific patio thats tailor made for good conversation and good times. I'll be back, and soon. read more

Hi Dive is conveniently located across the street from where I was hosting an event, so a group of us headed over there after it ended. Apparently we showed up five minutes before they were going to close the kitchen. Our waitress impatiently asked us if we wanted food, told us to order at the bar, then left. When we tried to order at the bar, the bartender said we needed to ask the waitress. How confusing. Anyways, I ended up with the Bello Burger and fries... and of course a beer. The Bello Burger was packed with produce and was quite tasty. Messy but tasty experience for around $14 or $15. The fries were pretty good. My friend (who is more or less a Hi Dive regular) recommended them. We went there late evening, but I was imagining how pretty the view must be during the day! Decent service, mediocre food. I would come here again for its convenience in location at the very least. read more

Hi Dive is my go to spot. The food and drinks are excellent. The spiced fries complete any meal. Whether It's raining or warm and dry there is an option. Service is great. Last time I went my Sister and niece met me there. We sat outside in the sunshine. The umbrellas kept us cool and comfortable. I brought my pup and she was well behaved under the table. I had the F-Line Burger. Cheddar, bacon, carmelized onion. Excellent! Inside feels like a New England Pub, with banquettes and a bay view. Prices are fair. It was a good dining experience and our server was very welcoming. I ordered the fish tacos. It was two fish tacos accompanied with 2 types of sauce, beans, and sour cream. I enjoyed the fish taco but I do think it could use a bit more seasoning if you don't use the sauces. Better than average food and friendly service but expensive. 4 people walk into a bar. Stop me if you know the rest.... After Hi Dive's appetizer sampler of mozzarella sticks, fries, spicy chicken tenders and onion rings and calamari and their Buffalo style wings and 7 beers we were stuffed to the gills. But our pockets were also lightened by $80. A bit much for a dive bar. Sure the wings were really great, but we had send the calamari back because it tasted old overcooked and dry, all at the same time. Their replacements returned to our table like someone had given a really good talking to: "Shape UP! Get Large and tasty! Show these people what it means to be a great Calamari!" And they did: in double the size of what we sent back. Thanks kitchen for not only getting it right the second time but being so generous. :) The fries were OK, the onion rings were better than average, and the mozzarella sticks were most probably of the pre-prepared kind. But I think if we hadn't sent back the calamari, we would have been surely far more disappointed at bill-time. The limited selection of beers (we had either the Hefeweizen or a German Pilzner) were $6 each and were not bad, but I'm not sure if they were worth it, given that they were over 1/2 the cost of the bill. The waitress of the afternoon really did a nice job keeping us satisfied. The views of the water are true in fact, but aesthetically clean, clear water, nor was the water surrounding much but old docks and piers. So don't go for the view. But there are surely better places to grab a beer or two for less and still have a snack for less than $20 a person. read more

Some nights especially if there is a found raiser and they ave them often it can get very loud but most of the time it is not too bad, friendly crowd and staff is great. It's hard to believe that I would give a dive bar 5 stars, but our waiter was phenomenal and very attentive to the point that I didn't notice that my friend had even gotten a second drink or asked for one. I ordered the fried calamari and normally I wouldn't, but was craving them. This place does an AMAZING job at fried calamari, who would've thought!??? The interior is warm and welcoming. My friends and I (21, 22, and 23) walked into the bar and the server was quick to be with us, which was nice. I was hosting my two friends from Florida. We'd picked out our drinks but unfortunately one of my friends actively realized she had left her ID at my apartment (we commuted from the South Bay Area). She began to search in her bag, in the meanwhile I pulled my ID out. While my friend double checked she didn't have her wallet, the server began to tell us about how she "used to be young once," knew "all the tricks," and quoted my friend directly about "leaving my wallet at home." To be fair, my friend does have a baby face. We decided to leave, feeling a bit disrespected and embarrassed (me especially, as I'm the youngest of the three). I'm sure the bar encounters minors but we found the extra comments from the server disorienting and a bit rude. The drinks (holiday menu) did sound amazing, though. read more

I've been driving by the place for years, literally. Happenstance, and an art exhibit at nearby office, finally prompted me (and several friends) to finally try this place. Since I've been on a beef kick, I was tempted by the crab melt and the fish tacos, but since it was my first visit I opted to try the Downtown Burger. It came with the requisite lettuce, tomato, red onion, and a pickle. I decided to add some caramelized onions just to jazz it up a bit. The burger was a decent size (big enough to fill you up but not so oversized it was impossible to eat) and nice and moist. The onions really made it special. Side dish-wise, I went with the lightly spiced French fries instead of the tarragon slaw. The fries, cur shoestring size, were nice and crispy. All in all, it was a solid choice. I did have a brief moment of food envy because my friend's slaw looked delicious. It also looked homemade, which for some reason made it all the more appealing. I was quite so happy with my cocktail. It was perfectly serviceable, but nothing about it was unique or special. I think I've been spoiled too much by all the artisanal cocktail options the city has to offer. I think in the future I would go for what's on tap. Our waitress was really nice, and didn't bat an eye when I asked her to split up the check so a couple of us could sneak home. The Hi Dive gets an extra star for its view. I was able to take in the bridge and the lovely blue water, before watching the sun set. Then I got to see the shimmer of Oakland and the East Bay in the distance.
