Four stars for appetizers! I'm saving the fifth for when I try a dinner. The sweet chili wings are delicious. We forgot to ask for crispy but they came crispy, standard. Delicious! The onion rings are big and crispy. Certainly enough to share! They only have ginger dressing or ranch dressing for the salad but the salad was fresh and big . The chicken skewer seemed to be fried?? No breading but they're not normally fried so that was a surprise. I'm not sure if I liked them that way but they did taste good and came with a side of peanut sauce. Wife and I have dined here a few times and had great food, service and conversation while sitting at the bar. Ruby is a gem and she is attentive to detail and has a great memory of her patrons likes and dislikes. Affordable drinks and Asian influenced American food. Any of the 'Fire Grilled" options are great, and the list of appetizers are usual and unusual as well. More people need to experience Hey Chef's clean environment, tasty food and Ruby's welcoming hospitality. Nightly specials most nights of the week and cheap draft beer - we'll be back. read more

Hey Chef just opened in the former TJ's Cafe in Colonie. This new Asian restaurant serves up a variety of noodle soups & rice dishes, sizzling plates, chicken wings, fried appetizers, and salads. The main meats served here are chicken, beef and shrimp, plus salmon and snow crab legs. The prices are fair and they offer lunch specials until 3pm and they were offering a grand opening special, 1 pound of snow crab legs served with fries and broccoli for $19.95. They also offer beer and cocktails. I stopped by Hey Chef for dinner recently. The place wasn't very busy. I was seated in the front dining room and brought out ice water as I looked over the menu. The place is very low key and casual inside though the apex roof of the building stands out. I started out with Chicken Potstickers ($5.95 plus tax), which were pan fried and served with soy sauce for dipping. These 6 firm potstickers were served very hot and filled with a soft chicken & vegetable mix, very good. For dinner, I went with the Shrimp Noodle Soup ($14.95 plus tax) which was served very hot in a big bowl and had soft cooked wheat Ramen noodles, 8 firm shrimp (with tails & cleaned), cabbage, shittake mushrooms, cilantro, yellow & green peppers, onions in a pork bone broth. I added some soy sauce to my soup to give it a bit more flavor. The noodle soup overall was pretty good. After I finished my food, the server brought over the check which had a 3 percent credit card surcharge bringing the total to $23.25 with tax and before tip. The cash total should be $22.57 with tax and before tip. Of course I paid cash, and left exact change with tip. I was also given a Night Night Light as part of their grand opening. Overall, the food was pretty good and the service was prompt. I was very close to ordering the snow crab legs grand opening special, $10 off regular price ($29.95), but I ultimately stuck with the Asian foods. read more

If I could give Hey Chef 4.5 stars that would probably be most appropriate.I ordered takeout online while running errands on a Saturday. My Fire Grilled Chicken noodle lunch special is available on most days until 3pm. The restaurant, located in an A-frame on Central Avenue is still in its "grand opening " mode. There are outdoor signs indicating that. Unlike some of the newest Asian fusion restaurants, this one doesn't appear to be a chain, but according to a recent newspaper article, it's owned by the same restauranteur as the Tengu Asian Bistro located on Central Avenue in Colonie. This restaurant is clean, cheerful with colored lighting fixtures over the bar. The bartender handed me my order. She was friendly and efficient. My order was ready when I got there. It was good and quite healthy, but nothing that I couldn't prepare myself. Still, I'm glad someone else did since I didn't feel like cooking. The chicken and noodles were covered in brown sauce. I'm pretty sure it was hoisin sauce. The noodles were just a tad too soft--slightly overcooked--but that might have been my fault. I don't know how many minutes it had been sitting.The website guarantees the meals will be ready in 15-25 minutes. I also ordered a Taro Milk Tea which I liked very much. It's purple which is standard with some tapioca pearls at the bottom. My request for just a small amount of "pearls" was followed perfectly. This is yet another Asian noodle house for the Capital Region but it's also so much more. There are rice dishes and an interesting mix of American foods as other reviewers have pointed out. There are a large variety of wings, appetizers , even snow crab legs and chicken parm. It's certainly worth another visit. Perhaps next time, I'll try some wings. read more

Pretty good value, good taste. They didn't dry out the chicken wings, which was a plus. I expected some type of a buttery cover with garlic and Parmesan. This had almost like a glaze over it, but they were tasty. The fish was flavorful and tender, the bright kinda hard around the edges. The service was OK, a little terse, but ok. The value for the money was good, especially considering their specials. The french fries were OK. The place has an Asian feel to it, as the menu seems to suggest. I'll be back to sample the wonton or maybe the steak as well. read more

Stopped in for lunch and was very impressed. The lunch menu was a good deal, I got the stir fry with shrimp and it was delicious, perfect portion too. The service I received was very friendly and accommodating, and I really liked the ambiance. It's in an A frame building with a cute bar and separate dining area. Lunch specials a plenty, drink specials, daily specials...I love a place that offers a value and doesn't skimp on the details. read more

Went here because it was a close place to walk to for lunch while my car was being worked on. I was with one of my children a friend of hers. It was nice inside with lots of decorations and clean. The service was good and the food was made fresh and tasty. I was also pleasantly surprised when I got the bill because I expected to pay a lot more because of the size portions and freshness of our meals. I would highly recommend this establishment for anyone looking for Chinese food with an American flair. read more

From the first step into the restaurant, it feels welcoming and very clean. While I waited for my friends, I enjoyed a Perfectly Made Extra Dry Martini. The awesome, friendly bartender, who turned out to be the waitress as well, brought our food timely and made sure our needs were met. The Fire Grilled Steak was Extremely Delicious, and the price was so reasonable! Like 15 dollars or something. The portion was enough to need a togo container! The bathroom was clean as a whistle, a great place. I guess I just should have said Yes! I recommend Hey Chef! Entering the A-frame building, I was in a large, well lit bar. It offers seating on three sides, wall-mounted, TV screens and tables against one wall. The bartender was chatting amiably with a customer whom she later shared, was a regular. Two women, in for a late lunch, were shown into the dining room, which has ample seating for about 50. My grilled chicken arrived promptly, attractively plated with noodles, a fried egg and steamed broccoli. The menu displays an intriguing assortment of American and Asian dishes, which I look forward to sampling on a second visit soon. read more
