Giant tub of kimchi for only $67. Good deal if you ask me!

I've been a big fan of HEX for a while now, ever since I tried their kombucha at a Ceremony Coffee Roasters location ages ago. Since then, I've become slightly addicted to HEX's miso kimchi. I know it's not a typical Korean-style kimchi but it has become one of my favorite staple fridge items thanks to it's spicy, funky flavor. For anyone who has food allergies or sensitivities, rest assured that the miso kimchi is both soy free and gluten free. That's because the miso is chickpea based. I'm not sure how they do it but damn, is it good. The store itself is super cute with a full bar and a covered back patio. They have a food menu so you can grab a bite to eat or even sip on a cocktail. The rest of the store has large fridges and shelves stocked full of not just HEX goodies, but also plenty of other locally sourced items. There's beer, wine, produce, meat, snacks, bath items - you name it. This is such a good spot to go if you're looking for a gift, or trying to bring something to a housewarming party, or just want to peruse for a little while. My mom and I stopped by recently and ended up grabbing quite a few things from the store. We were even allowed to taste a few samples of the HEX products like the pickled beets and the tumeric kimchi. They provide free samples of any HEX stuff you want to try in the tasting room. I have to say, the miso kimchi continues to be my favorite. I definitely want to come back for lunch and sit on their back patio on a nice day. They also have a small but free parking lot in the back!

Great kombucha and delicious dips that include a several vegan options; I REALLY loved the cashew dip. The service was phenomenal as well. There was such a cool atmosphere created for the event I attended. I grabbed 2 bottles and intend to return for more!

a man standing in front of a cooler - A large, multi-door glass refrigerator contains an assortment of fermented foods and drinks, such as bottles of kombucha and jars of kimchi or sauerkraut. The display is situated indoors, with a promotional sign on a table in front, and a person partially visible on the right side. The setting appears to be a retail or tasting room environment focused on local and organic fermented products.

You've seen Hex products around town, at farmers markets and supermarkets - they make all things fermented, kombucha, kimchi, pickles, etc. But did you know they are a local Baltimore company with headquarters in the city and are run by people who need out on food? The Hex Superette has a little bit of everything you want. It's has a bar with inventive cocktails and a food menu featuring creative ways to use their ingredients, but they also have a community space for classes, a carefully curated supermarket, and a production facility. The products in the market are super fresh and the producers are personally known by the owners. The egg guy came buy the day we were there and apologized that his hens hadn't laid as many eggs that week because of the weather. Super fresh. I left with pistachio milk, brown and blue eggs, and a bag of frozen scallops. I'm putting this market in my monthly rotation for specialty items, kombucha, and local protein. You've got to visit this place. Seriously.

This place was so cool. First, there's the Hex Ferments portion of things. They have a bar/tasting room, with various drinks on tap and available to be served as well as some small bites. I was hoping for all kombucha (that's my jam) but they have a lot of variety of items (only one or two kombuchas available on tap). I had my kids along and there was a bit of a crowd so I didn't spend much time on the tasting room side of things. The second portion of Hex Superette is the "grocer" side. Here you can purchase Hex Ferments products like giant bottles of kombucha, containers of kimchi, fermented sauces and even scobys for the home brewer. The Superette also features vegetables and cold items from local farms and vendors. I noticed canned Thread Roasters Coffee amongst the items for sale. The third, and final, portion of the Superette is the "pop up" portion. I'm under the impression that this part of the shop will rotate. Thru the holidays they are featuring Made in Baltimore. This means there are items on sale from over 50 local vendors. I noticed bags of coffee from local roasters, vegan chocolate, soaps, hand crafted items and paper goods amongst the Made in Baltimore portion. We walked out of Hex Superette with one of their kombuchas, two apples and vegan chocolate covered espresso beans. The price was not cheap but, to keep things local and fresh, sometimes you have to pay a bit more. If you are into buying local, fermented foods and a cool vibe, might I suggest checking out Hex Superette.

Six halved stuffed eggs are arranged on a white plate, each topped with various garnishes including herbs, spices, and shredded vegetables. The eggs are pink, and the garnishes include orange, yellow, and green elements. Pickles are placed in the center of the plate, and the dish is set on a wooden table with a piece of paper partially visible in the background.

I know you're wondering - what the hell is HEX Superette? Is it a store? A bar? A restaurant? It's all three! Let's start with the shop: you can get local gifts, clothes, and food at the retail portion of the building. They're primarily filled up with local brands like Liberty Farms and B'More pasta. Lots of tinned fish, wine, and fancy cheeses. They also sell all of their HEX fermented items. Next up is the restaurant offerings: they have light snacks and some heavier options. I got the vegan cheese board (insane), a kimchi flight, and the deviled eggs. They also have items like sausages, burgers, a carnivore cheese board, and grilled cheese. Everything was delicious with layers of flavors. The bread was also made in house! I'm not a big drinker, but the drinks were delicious from what I sipped off from my friends. The staff here were SUPER friendly, knowledgeable, and kind. They will answer every and any question you have and definitely cultivate a cute experience. You can have a "tasting" of any of their fermented items before you buy them. They also have cute outdoor seating. This is a great spot to catch up with an old friend over a drink, a good spot for a third or fourth date, or maybe even a quiet spot to get some work done!

Kombucha sample table - A group of people is participating in a beverage tasting event at a store or cafe. They are standing around a wooden table with bottles of drinks and numerous small cups for sampling. The background shows a refrigerated display with bottles and a well-lit interior. Participants are engaged, some holding cups, and appear to be discussing or tasting the beverages. The setting includes modern furniture and a casual atmosphere.

Nice welcoming atmosphere offering all kinds of tasty fermented offerings. Tried the glow and pizza sauerkraut which will make great additions to sandwiches and of course pizza! Will definitely find them at the JFX farmers market in the future.

Beet Pickles ( organic beets, ginger, and spices). This is really tasty.

It's great to find an establishment that sell local juice, beer, wine, local produce, as well as local artist/entrepreneurs. I had a tasting of Butterfly Lime and honey juice and beet pickles and purchased them both. The prices are reasonable. You can have cocktails, wines, beer at the bar along with a bite to eat from the kitchen. There are vegan and gluten free entrées. This was my first time visiting but this is on my weekly list for my juice and beet pickles and more. . Shane is awesome !

What a lovely treat! Have always enjoyed their pickle veggies and was so excited to see the have a brick and mortar to showcase their pickled yummies. Stopped in with friends for an early lunch on saturday. The place was relatively quiet one guy working at a long table in the dining space and two people at the bar area. The staff are truly friendly and personable, helpful without being overbearing. It was nice to be able to try samples of fermented veggies before I purchased. We enjoyed a lovely lunch at the table closest to the window. The space is very calming and green. There are so many fun kitchen items to explore while you're waiting to be served. A friend got a non alcoholic cocktail and very much enjoyed it, myself and another dining guest enjoyed a nice cup of coffee. We were sad deviled eggs were out so I'll have to come back. We shared the cashew dip with veggies and a few sandwiches. Everything is perfectly presented, fresh and well complemented flavors. Any of the sandwiches made with focaccia are your best choice. I wasn't totally wild about the tempeh sandwich, I didn't know that the burger would be made with black beans as well. Would highly recommend roasted mushroom sandwich or the grilled cheese with kimchi. We left with a few jars of treats to take home, definitely coming back next time we're in the area.

Loved meeting them at the Dupont Circle farmer's market! They have a variety of other options including beets, juniper sauerkraut, etc. but the traditional sauerkraut and miso kimchi were my favorites. $8-10 per jar of pickled vegetables is not the most sustainable option for my food budget but I think I'll splurge occasionally for how good these are. Less salty than grocery store options, super flavorful, and a little goes a long way whether you add it to a meal or have some on its own.

I discovered Hex in a bottle shop in downtown Baltimore and went to this location to taste more flavors and also some of their fermented veggies. At first, we had a hard time finding the booth- it's at the back of the market between the smoked place and the chocolate shop. Once we found it, though, we were glad we stopped for a visit! You can sample all flavors of kombucha and also all of the veggies. We ended up taking home several bottles of butterfly lime kombucha (still my favorite) and a jar of orchard relish. The prices here are higher than you will pay at Whole Foods for compatible national brand products, but the quality reflects artisanal, small production quality and are suitable for a more adventurous palate. We will return!

My husband and I needed a place to check work email for about an hour and a half and the Belvedere Market was perfect! After sitting at a table, Hex's wares caught my eye with their array of colors and funky packaging. I strolled over and asked a couple questions about their 'buch and the person working was so helpful and kind. He offered me samples and who was I to say no? I tried the ginger (classic) and the smoky pineapple. I wanted to try them all, but I restrained myself. Both were FAB. The ginger had a nice clear, bright taste that would be excellent in cocktails. I wound up buying a bottle of the smoky pineapple though because it was a flavor totally unlike those available from commercial brands. It had notes of clove and honestly feels like a great. I can't wait to seek them out in the DC metro area to sample more varieties!

Upon arriving, I was pleasantly surprised to see that no one was waiting despite the holiday weekend. I asked the hostess for a table for 2 and she said it wouldn't be too long of a wait but offered the bar if we wanted to eat immediately. I don't find the bar comfortable and my companion was parking so I said we'd wait. After about 2 mins 2 young ladies arrive and she offers them the bar but before doing that makes sure we still don't want to eat at the bar. I confirm for a second time that we want a table. Meanwhile, a couple leaves and I see the hostess go over to another couple at the bar who were not on the list and say "I don't usually do this but since your both here if you want a table I have one." Kind of rude especially since by her own admission they don't do this but my companion was still parking and I figured maybe she was spreading some valentines cheer so I said nothing. About 5 minutes later a group of 3 arrive and she offers them the bar seats which they also decline. She puts them on the list under my name and in the meantime says if I want to sit at the bar while waiting that's fine. My companion and I decide to take a seat there since she had suggested this and we didn't want to be in the way. At this point the hostess start giving us place setting and menus and I reiterated for a THIRD time that we wanted a table. She replied oh well you might not have time and ran off. Another 5 minutes goes by and I see a party of 3 leaving. Knowing we're next on the list I start to gather my stuff only to see the hostess cross my name off the list and run outside to the wine bar to grab the people below us on the list. When I stop her and remind her we want a table she gets an extremely nasty tone and starts arguing with me that I said a bar seat would be fine. She knew damn well we did not agree to that. After being caught red handed, instead of apologizing to me and the other party and rectifying the situation she dug in and berated me and said it doesn't matter anyway because this is a three seater and proceeded to seat them over us. After waiting an additional 15 minutes we got a seat next to the kitchen where I had a view of 2 other couples sitting at 3 seaters.. Guess that rule was just for my partner and I. Mind you this was to celebrate my birthday and valentines so it stung extra to be treated in such a manner. After all of that, we caught the restaurant putting Carpaccio di Manzo on our bill which, we did not order. The waitress fixed it and barely offered an apology. The bartender was the best part of this experience, she was kind, knowledgeable, and seemed to enjoy her job. She even came over as we were leaving to thank us for our patronage and seemed to be cognizant of terribly we were treated. 5 yelp stars for her! As for the food, I'd give it 4 stars. It was good but the vodka and baccala sauces seemed to be missing something.
