I've been home brewing beer for over a year now, and it all started by walking into this store. I wasn't sure I wanted to commit to the hobby, but the staff were very friendly and happily helped me learn the ropes. The store has some basic recipes available, so I started there. Initially I was doing 1 gal batches, but staff helped me convert the recipes to small scale. I didn't know anything about malts and staff patiently walked me through the process of selecting varieties and showed me how the mill works. And now a year later, I'm on my 14th brew day! My husband and I first visited MDHB just over a year ago, when he suggested we try their "beginner homebrewing" class. We walked out with a whole setup to do our first five gallon batch. Since then, I've "graduated" to brewing my own recipes, though I still haven't made the jump to all-grain. I don't know the first thing about brewing beer. So when I came here to surprise my boyfriend with a beer brewing kit, I was relieved that the employees working here were so incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. This place is located in a somewhat obscure business park off of Snowden River Parkway. I never would have come across this place if I hadn't done some research on home brewing stores in the area. There were two basic equipment kits to choose from - "America's Best" which is the easiest, least complex kit, or "Brewer's Best," another brand that is a step up from the former kit mentioned and comes with a few extra pieces. Both kits come with all the equipment you need for brewing beer but not the ingredients for the actual beer. Each of the brands has several ingredient packs sold separately which will make all sorts of ales and stouts. These kits include all the hops, malt, yeast, and other good stuff required to actually make the beer. Just a tip - the guy we talked to said to start with ales and work your way up to making stouts. One other thing you'll definitely be needing.. some beer bottles! So just try to save some up to reuse, or you can purchase new or used bottles here. You'll need a total of about 48 bottles, so hopefully you've got a place to stash the bottles till you need them. You'll also need a place to store the 6 and a half gallon buckets where your beer will ferment, so that's something to think about before making a purchase... When we went on Saturday, there was a 10% off all Brewer's Best products, so I ended up spending just over 100 bucks total for the equipment kit, one ingredient kit, and some used beer bottles. (Yeah yeah... I forgot to save old bottles. We'll wash them out thoroughly before filling them!) For those of you that are a little more advanced and just want to buy the ingredients straight up, they have them all here too! So go check it out. If you know nothing, the people will definitely be able to help you. I just can't wait for us to start the process. Then, I'll be able to tell you how good it tastes! read more

As a relatively new home brewer, I am in the "wildly obsessed" stage of beer brewing, which basically means I want to try to make as many different types of beer as possible. I actually took a class with my boyfriend and one of my close friends from college in New York in April... it was a birthday present for my friend, but was also an excuse to jump start my own brewing. Armed with a kit from the class in New York, I did my first two batches kind of haphazardly from a beer recipe book and mail-ordering my malt extract, specialty grains, yeast, etc. Since I live in DC, none of the area homebrew shops are particularly close or convenient to me. But a trip to Baltimore provided the perfect excuse to check this place out. We were on a bit of a time crunch to make our event in Baltimore, so we had alloted ourselves about 1 hour for the beer store. We made it under time, but I could have easily spent hours there. The store is actually in an industrial complex and is of warehouse proportions. When we pulled up just five minutes before the store opened, we were surprised to see two other cars already there waiting for the store to open. The staff here is incredibly knowledgable and helpful. If I had more time, I would have loved the DIY aspect of this store. You can measure out your own grains, crush them if you like, pick out your hops from the freezer or your yeasts from the fridge. Or, you can ask one of the several staff members for assistance like I did because I was trying to pull together ingredients for my next 4 batches and was short on time. The guy pulled out 4 shopping baskets and went methodically through my recipes one-by-one to help me pull all of the ingredients, making instant substitutions when something was discontinued, and giving me advice on tweaking recipes (e.g. substituting a different kind of yeast, etc.). Another thing I really liked was that I wanted to buy an additional fermentation bucket but they couldn't find the lids, so they actually broke apart one of the kits to make sure I went home with everything I needed. They also double-checked to make sure I hadn't forgotten anything (Need a grain bag? No, but thanks for asking!) and did not try to oversell anything (Whats the advantage of having a secondary with a spigot if I already have a bottling bucket? Its just more expensive to get the spigot version). I'll be back here for my next batch, but I'll make sure I save a couple hours instead! read more

Options are pretty limited when it comes to home brew stores in this area. This store is tucked away in an unassuming, industrial-looking shopping center. One that looks more like office buildings than it does retail stores. They have a huge selection of beer-, cheese- and wine-making equipment and supplies. Everything from yeast, hops and malt to rice hulls and cracked corn. They even have malt/grain mills to go along with their huge selection of malt. Tip: they'll mash the grain for you in-store. We picked up an additional brewing kit yesterday and a nice 4 gallon steel pot. The staff and even most of the patrons are extremely well-versed in beer making and are always willing and able to help. The prices seem reasonable, but again there isn't really anywhere to compare to since this is pretty much the only home brew store in the area. Yesterday I went in and noticed for the first time that they have whiskey casks which were pretty expensive, but perhaps worth it if you want to make Whiskey or some type of Bourbon Barrel Ale. Bottom line: Maryland Homebrew far exceeds expectations. read more

It's great having such a full-service store within an easy drive. We can get just about anything we need for home brewing here (doing moderate level of all-grain brewing, not just your standard Mr. Beer kit, although they do offer starter kits and classes). We can find just about anything we need here, and can usually get advice on where to find anything they don't sell. Their staff are all friendly and knowledgeable so I've been able to get any question answered. Great selection of grain that you can mill yourself, plus most anything else you need (we've even preordered some hop rhizomes to plant this spring!) We make some cheese on the side and can even get a pretty good selection of cheese making supplies and cultures here. Like anywhere else in Columbia, GPS is helpful in finding it the first time. I was interested in home brewing for a while and found their website online. Without question, their online guide to home brewing was perfect for giving me just the right amount of information to get started. The information was thorough, but not overwhelming. I decided quickly thereafter to drive to their store in Columbia and check out their selection. Upon arrival, the staff greeted me and led me through the warehouse. Without being pushy - you know that push-push-push to buy a product that you really don't need? - they led me through their selection. While doing so, they also answered any questions (and believe me, having never brewed before I had a lot!) that I had. I left buying a Brewer's Best Delux starter kit, two 1 gallon bottles, and a 24 pack of 12 oz bottles! I feel that they gave me solid advice that helped me make the best decision. I left feeling very happy with my purchase. That was three weeks ago! I just bottled my first 5 gallons of English Pale Ale! I stopped in yesterday to get some advice for the bottling process and they were as helpful as usual. I also bought a few extra supplies (a one gallon jug, stopped, air lock, corn sugar, and yeast) to brew homemade apple cider! Just like before, the staff led me through the process and made the whole procedure seem very easy. I found the staff to be incredibly helpful in custom-designing recipes for me given my situation - brewing 1-gallon batches in a tiny apt with little control over temperature. They walked me through all the ingredients I needed (scaled down for a gallon), including all of the little bags of specialty grains, and instead of making me buy a full jug of LME, they poured just the right amount for me. They also suggested a yeast more suitable for my apt's higher temps, and did not try to upsell me on anything. I just brewed two batches and can't wait to try the beer. MDHB is far from where I live, but I will be inventing other reasons to go towards Baltimore soon, just to swing by this place. read more

I love this place - their selection is huge, they have plenty of bulk grain and extracts, let you grind your own grain (even if you bought elsewhere), and the staff are all really helpful. They have a Lot of supplies too - from carboys and thermometers to kegs and taps. Today I was checking out, anticipating a long drive back home, and the cashier offered ice packs for my yeast to stay cool on the ride back to NoVA. It's like these guys think through what a home brewer really needs, and deliver above expectation. I will gladly make the hour trek north to visit these guys over the local home brew store near my house in Falls Church...they know how to treat home brew enthusiasts well. read more

This place is a little hard to find but once you do, the inside is really big and there is a ton of selection. The place is mostly self service but for the short time I was inside several people asked me if I needed help. I did not as I just wanted to browse. There are shelves of extract and an entire refrigerator devoted to yeast and a freezer for hops. There were about 20 specialty grains and lots of base malts. I showed up on a day that they were conducting a demo for all grain brewing. Unfortunately I did not get to attend the demo but it is a testament to the shop that they hold classes in AG brewing. It is the closest HB shop to my present location and I will definitely be using them from now on. Hopefully I can get a spot in the next AG course. read more

The selection of ingredients for beer and wine making are excellent. I am an avid homebrewer and rarely do they not have what I need to fulfill even the craziest of visions for a beer. They have recently moved to a larger store in the same strip center, and they now have even more stuff. I am amazed at the selection of parts they have available related to homebrewing/winemaking. Need a gasket, stopper, poppet, pipe fitting, tubing, regulator, etc...? They probably have it, even when you feel embarrassed asking for it because you think it is so obscure. The staff is knowledgeable and willing to help out with any issue you have without pressure of upselling a solution. Honest answers given here. The my only small ding is that they carry White Labs liquid yeast with no Wyeast. This isn't much of an issue, but if there is some strain you like from Wyeast that has no White Labs equivalent, you're out of luck. White Labs has a robust selection and MDHB carries practically all of them, so this is rarely a problem. Prices are in line with on-line retailers, without having to pay for shipping or waiting for a delivery. Great store for anyone, beginner or expert, who is interested in making wine or beer. read more
