I have been coming here since I started brewing back in 2019, just before the pandemic, using a beginner's brew kit my husband bought me back in 2017 (we didn't have the room until we moved into our new home). Let me start by say hello to the new owners and thanks to Jill and Thomas. The shop has been a very welcome and inviting place and I have not had a bad experience there. With that said, I am unable to justify paying the prices that you charge. While I understand supporting local businesses and the costs associated with running said business, charging $70 for a 50lbs sack of grains is a bit too much (50% markup). Especially when you can find it online for $46, toss in 8oz of hops for $7.50 (you charge $12.99 (74% markup)) and it's on your doorstep in two days with free shipping. My dad and I have been going here for various supplies for a couple of years now. The owners have been nothing but friendly and kind and are about as genuine as you can get. They take genuine interest in what their customers are doing with their brewing supplies, not just on a business level, but on a personal level. They are great people who run a great business. They usually have just about anything a home brewer would ever need. If you are a home brewer and need supplies, this is the best place in the area, and the best place that I personally know to go to. read more

This place is amazing - besides having the coolest name possible (no, I'm not the owner,) they take their business seriously. Their prices are better than other homebrew shops in the area, they have great selection, and their customer service is outstanding. I love the fact that I can order online, and not mess around with weighing a bunch of grain when I get there. Which brings me to the whole point of my review... Yesterday, I ordered the grains for my next batch of saison for in-store pick-up. I drove nearly an hour to the store to pick up my order, and of course, it was ready upon arrival. However, I didn't bother to verify that everything was there - so the next day when I was getting ready to brew, I noticed I was missing part of my order. I emailed the business to alert them to the issue (early on a Sunday morning,) and informed them that I intended to go to another homebrew shop nearby since the item I needed was just a couple bucks - but I'd still com back to Jay's Brewing in the future. I was shocked when the owner called me, and coordinated to personally deliver the item to my doorstep forthwith. Remember I live an hour away? All on a Sunday morning! As if I didn't have enough reasons to return to Jay's Brewing, now I'll definitely be going back. The customer service is about as good as it gets. Also, they take customer feedback seriously. In my situation, the error was caused by a computer glitch, which they plan to iron out, but reading reviews here I see that they always take customer feedback seriously. This place has a great selection of ingredients, hardware, and smarts! Their staff are home brewers and love to interact with the customers. They have some recipe books in case you are undecided on what to make next, they are knowledgeable and always helpful. Their prices are good, comparable to mail order in most cases so support your local HBS! Another plus: They have an electric mill you can use to mill your grains (bought there, of course!). An updated review since my last three years ago. I'm REALLY satisfied with the progress of this operation. I've seen incremental changes made that demonstrate the owners really care about the customer experience. Case in point, they moved the grain into it's own room, kind of like a cigar humidor (without the humidity) where the result is they can minimize dust from milled grain. Historically, I've been reluctant to visit a LHBS because I've found the prices to be more expensive than most online vendors even with extra shipping charges. Mostly visited when I needed something last minute. However, after I itemized a recent order from Jay's and compared it to online, Jay's was somewhat cheaper and I didn't have to wait a week for flat rate shipping from other places. You get a better deal when you buy bulk hops and grain. Plus, I actually enjoy visiting the store and like that they've increased their standard equipment inventory to include some high end pots. read more

Jay is one outstanding person. This shop has everything you need beer, including help. We had a down and out kegerator and found Jay's online. He has some good reviews so we dropped in with our disassembled mass of keg stuff. Jay patiently explained everything keg and beer to us...and home made root beer, then proceeded to help us put it together enough to get it home and hook up. I stopped in to find a new brew shop and I got a fantastic level of service, attention, laughs, and warmth that you don't find in most shops anymore. The whole set up and experience here was new to me (automatic millers, needing tubing cut, even some recipe craft advice) and the owner (Not just an employee, the owner) was helping me package the grain and talking to me about his passion and work here. That's genuine and it's genuinely great. Their selection covers everything from beginner stuff (Kits and starter packs) all the way through to kegging and all grain/water chemistry stuff. This place is totally awesome. The owner, Derek, absolutely went out of his way to help me out. I am an extract brewer, finally making the leap to all-grain, so I was a little overwhelmed with getting my recipe together. Derek jumped right in, made suggestions for things that he didn't have, milled the grain (it's packaged on-site in airtight sealed bags which is awesome), and did it all with a smile. The grain mill is a beast! It was busy, too, so it's not like the dude didn't have anything better to do. I like that everything is out in the open, the grains, two fridges (one hope and one for yeast), malt extract, etc. Prices were good - I paid about $48 for a very high-gravity recipe and got two types of yeast to split the batch. I looked online at amazon.com and in a Northern Brewer mag at prices; grain is a little cheaper on-line (about 10-20 cents per lb), but Jay's brewing had cheaper yeast and hops, and you eat that with the minimum $7.95 shipping online anyways. Also, some places charge to crush the grains, Jay's does not. Jay's Northern Brewer Pale Ale Malt $1.69/lb $1.50/lb Weyermann Smoked $2.29 $2.50 Crystal Malt 20L $1.99 $1.75 Crystal Malt 60L $1.89 $1.75 So I guess if you buy a crap-ton of grain in bulk and have your own grain mill, online would be the way to go as long as you get some type of set, flat-fee shipping. To be fair, my only other experience with a beer brewing supply store was My Local Home Brew Shop in Falls Church. I went to this store as I needed some ingredients to make a summertime wheat beer with some friends. It's located in old town/historic Clifton, which I thought was odd. Finding the store was a bit challenging as it isn't made entirely clear on Google maps or on any signs in the area. I couldn't even describe how to get there once I parked if I wanted. When I entered the building (which appeared to be an office building) and looked into the store I wasn't even sure it was the right place. I expected it to be more crowded and have more of a staff. Instead it was just some guy sitting at a small desk in front of a storage closet. He was plenty helpful, but wasn't really talkative. Plus I couldn't exactly peruse their wares because it seemed like he was the only person allowed to go get their stuff. Not to appear entirely negative there were a few things I really liked: 1) they had everything I needed 2) the cost wasn't super steep 3) their website was extremely useful (especially compared to the aforementioned My Local Home Brew Shop) read more

My first time here - but not my last. And to put this all in context...I live about thirty minutes away and even at that I'm glad to make the drive here. Anyway, I've been brewing off and on for over twenty years now, and I've been in my share of brewing stores. Sometimes they are baffling, sometimes they are cramped, sometimes the owner/proprietor is surly, and sometimes the staff doesn't care. None of that applies to this shop. Probably the thing I like most about the shop is that the grains are on full display...and you are invited to mill them yourself at the shop. Some stores I've been in will have a counter person go in the back to fill your grain bill, and you never really get a chance to feel, smell, or taste the grain before you buy it. Another point - when I visited the shop, there was a steady stream of customers coming through. This means inventory is turning over, which means you aren't going to be buying stuff that isn't fresh. So anyway, when I stopped by the store I decided to start with one of their brewing recipe kits. I think this is a good way to kind of get to know the shop. Their kits are assembled on the spot using the recipe, so again...you're getting the freshest ingredients instead of a pre-made kit that may have been sitting on the shelf for who knows how long. The yeast (White Labs) had a current date on it, and Jill crushed the grain right in front of me. Kudos, really. Everything is of good quality. As for attitude, sometimes brew shops try to give off an air like they know more than their customers...and that's a turnoff. Here, that isn't the case. Jill was pleasant, friendly, and laid back, which is the perfect attitude for brewing. It's about the beer, after all, and Charlie Papazian's adage to relax, don't worry, and have a homebrew is obviously the ruling philosophy here. So to sum up, this shop is fantastic for brewers of all experience and skill levels. The ingredients are fresh, the equipment is good quality, and the owners have exactly the right attitude. After seeing a few threads on Facebook that the old owner sold to a new owner. The previous owner is indeed gone. What a difference! My only other visit was November 2014 and I wrote a scathing but true expose/review on Yelp. Went in today and met Jill who now owns Jay's Brewing with her husband. Super nice. She weighed out my grains and some hops for me. She is very helpful. I very much hope these people succeed here. I hope people give these 2 folks another try, and here is why. 1.) The free range cats(yes cats) are history. 2.) The store floor, counters, scales, refrigerators and shelving are immaculate. Clean. Spotless. 3.) The pricing is very competitive with what you'd find in other area homebrew shops and online. 4.) They genuinely want feedback from their customers as to what additional inventory to carry. Anyway, thanks for a great shopping experience today. I drove all the way out from Burke to see for myself. The people of Prince William County deserve a great homebrew shop and I think given a few growing pains they will have decent path towards rebuilding this business. Good Luck! Ive been coming to Jays since Derek was the owner and I can attest that all you have read below about that period is true. Under the new ownership I have seen some great things happen. More product for one. Jill and her Husband, are great. They help in any way they can. Jill has even put my order together for me and had me come pick it up later as I was short on time. They are using the same mill which apparently is on the fritz, i had to wait one time for it to be repaired but i was not in a hurry that day and I got 10% off! Prices are ok for most items. Their yeast tends to be a dollar more than anywhere online. not a big deal but most web sites do offer free shipping if you spend enough and lets be real, its not like most of our purchases at a home brew shop are under $59. there are a few items i would try to avoid buying at jays. One being the large muslin bags. I got 8 of them and found out that it run me over $10. those should be under a dollar each in my opinion. The grain seems to be fairly priced which is nice. I guess they need to make their money somewhere. I like to support local business when possible and their friendly customer service and reasonable prices make it easy to do so. read more

I am a beginner brewer and Jill could not have been more helpful. I visited the shop first to get an idea of what I would be getting myself into. After listening to her recommendations and getting an idea of the cost involved I went home to consider everything. I watched some YouTube videos and read some articles about extract brewing which is what she had recommended for a beginner. The next day I was ready to commit. Jill helped me pick out all the supplies and through our conversation found out I like hoppy beers. She said she had the perfect IPA recipe. She pulled all the ingredients then walked me through the steps with a copy of the recipe. Jill definitely knows what she's doing and provides the support for a rookie. I somehow never managed to visit Jay's when Jay actually ran it, but I can attest to the quality of the new management under Jill and Thomas. Despite being bombarded with all the new challenges of opening up a small business, both of them manage to provide prompt, polite, and expert assistance in the store and over the phone. The store is quite clean and stocked wall to wall with self-serve grain buckets (and two fridges of yeast and hops), though if you need helping finding something or with weighing or milling, either of them are happy to help. It's sad that so few retail winemaking / homebrew shops have survived, but after visiting Jay's Brewing in Manassas I can see why. I was looking for a cheesemaking kit. They list some on their web site so I drove 30 miles out to Manassas to check it out. What a disappointment! There's a big, hairy cat laying on the floor (is cat hair good for beer?) and a lone employee who couldn't be bothered to talk about his cheesemaking kits except to say "we only have this one" and "if you want to make hard cheeses you need a cheese press, we don't have one". Maybe he's helpful if you're interested in making beer but, ask him a question about cheese? Forgetaboutit. I was also hoping to pick up a wine kit. There were a dozen or so... baking in the intense sun flooding through the front window of the shop. Judging from the faded print on the boxes, they've been baking in the intense sun flooding through the front window of the shop for a long, long time. No winemaking hardware, no cheesemaking supplies, few wine kits, an apathetic staffer with CLEARLY no interest in their product line - just a ton of barrels of every variety of cat hair and hops. Been gerry-rigging brewing equipment for a few years and when I found out Jay's was near my house I decided to drop in and price some real equipment. Positives: -Staff is knowledgable -Equipment is reasonably priced -When my airlock broke the first day, my fault for pushing on it too hard, the staff recognized me from earlier in the day and gave the replacement to me free with no hassle. I didn't even ask for it to be replaced. Major bonus points for customer service! Needing improvement: -it's very clear that they left the space the same way they found it from the previous business. Kind of dingy, doesn't look like a professional store. -the store is very clearly a beer store, with very limited wine and mead ingredients. I'm into brewing meads and wines, so the place doesn't totally meet my needs. I'm sure beer brewing is more popular, but the rest of us have money to spend here too. -I couldn't find much evidence that they are trying to be a nucleus for the local home brew community. Clean up the store, offer some local competitions, maybe some classes or some sort of way to make it a more social experience. When your into a hobby part of the joy is meeting and talking with other enthusiasts. Jay's is my best option for equipment, but I'll probably keep sourcing my honey from other places and order my yeasts online until the place looks a little more professional and the selection improves. Edit: think the owner was right, must have gotten there after a rush. Went last weekend and the grain was all cleaned up. read more

They are more than helpful and there's a level of customer service that you won't find. A diamond in the rough! I went in for parts to convert a fridge into a kegerator and she helped me with the whole process and gave me tips and common mistakes made by new buyers. I had been shopping the items online and the prices were very competitive with online options, plus she had varied quality levels and made recommendations about their performance and helped me choose the items to best suit my needs. To say things have changed is an understatement. I had purchased a wine kit and some equipment from Jay's years ago when the shop was under different management. Frankly the experience was less than stellar, so I had avoiding going back. I went in yesterday with guarded enthusiasm after seeing on their website that they had new owners. I couldn't have been more impressed. The shop is so much nicer and stocked with all the things I had to order from Amazon last time. AJ was awesome and patiently answered all my questions. This place is amazing. My wife and I just started brewing. I had been hemhawing for a couple years and my wife pulled the trigger for my 40th bday and we starting getting equipment and ingredients. We went to Jay's and I loved the place. It's organized and Tom and Jill are both helpful and amazing. I ask a lot of questions and they are happy to provide the answers. We somehow went from a 40$ gallon kit from Sam's we bought a couple years ago (that I hadn't made yet) to brewing 5 Gallon batches. I'm still learning but when someone can answer your questions and have everything it's just a better experience. We've bought a couple fairly big ticket items through them and it's been a pleasant experience overall. One not about the place I love is every time I walk in they have 2-3 other customers. What this means is they turn over inventory, especially ingredients. When you can see and smell the grains and mill them right there in the store, then see they turn over inventory I just makes it even better yet. Hat's off to great people running a great store. P.S. I know they don't make a huge deal about it but both Tom and Jill are veterans and as a vet I really like being able to support other veterans, especially when they have such a great business. read more

You know, I really appreciate local homebrew shops, and I really, really want to be supportive of them. But I just can't be supportive of Jay's any more. I've just had to cancel too many brew days because they didn't have necessary ingredients in stock. And I'm not talking about bizarre or unusual ingredients, either. This weekend they didn't have any sacks of standard 2-row malt. In the past, I have found them out of vienna malt, carapils malt, white wheat...the list goes on. It seems every time I go there, there is one key ingredient that is out of stock. I have tried calling in advance to find out if they have what I need before making the ~20 mi trip to the shop, but I rarely get an answer. There is usually only have one person running the shop, and (I assume) if there's anyone in the store, they just don't pick up the phone. There are a couple of other homebrew shops in the area, and both are much more reliably stocked and responsive to customers. I'm giving up on Jay's. read more

When I got home, out of curiosity I checked the receipt against a huge well known online brew supplier, and Jay's was $5 cheaper even before the $7 shipping. I've been in three times since then and I have to say, it's such a dramatic change that it's hard to fathom! The owners are very friendly, personable and passionate about what they're doing. The shop is clean, well-organized, and well-stocked. (and no cats!)
