I've been coming bi-weekly over the past few months. I really appreciate the high quality of Hewn's bread. I have to be careful though because everything looks so good especially if I see something new. I appreciate how some items are rotated throughout the week. Some of my favorites are the baguette, morning bun, monkey bread, holmenkollen, and durum. They also have special items on holidays such as king cake for fat Tuesday. Prices are on the high side, but for the quality you get, I feel it's worth it!

A line out the door on the Saturday morning before Easter should be a good indicator at this place's popularity. The Great Harvest a few blocks down did not boast the same we noticed. They were out of the ciabatta bread we wanted, but we ended up getting a baguette to try. It smelled amazing and was very similar to what I had in France. We also drooled over the chocolate Almond croissant which is so messy but so worth it. The combination of the Almond, chocolate and buttery pastry was heavenly. We also had the canela(sp?) which the very attentive employee explain had a custard creme brulee flavor. It wasn't as sweet as I expected but was really tasty. It would be perfect with some coffee.

Nothing quite like fresh pastries Looking for a great shop in the suburbs? Look no further than @hewnbread!! We stumbled into their Evanston location after a little mishap at their neighbor's (who will not be mentioned, but iykyk) shop next door. But, if it wouldn't have been for that mishap we wouldn't have gotten to try Hewn for the first time!! They had a variety of delicious looking pastries and a menu full of coffees, sandwiches, and other snacks. We grabbed the Everything Bagel Croissant and a Cinnamon Brioche! They were fantastic!! We heated the Cinnamon Brioche for just a few seconds and it was just lovely We're definitely returning for some sandwiches soon!!

Let's be real, bakeries are a dime a dozen in Evanston so it was real nice to find one where the pastries and baked goods are above beyond the rest. Hewn had a simple, open and rustic set up but it's great to see the baked goods all lined up for the day. I also saw the bakers at work in the kitchen, so I know I was going to get good quality pastries. I decided on the monkey bread and sticky bun and they're absolutely delicious! I paired them with coffee and it's even better! The man behind the counter was super nice and courteous and he even explained about their holiday order availability and cut off. Can't wait to come back and try more of their goodies!

Amazing customer service and a renowned bakery. I didn't know they used to provide the bread at Sweetgreen, which was always chewy and admittedly my favorite part of the salad. NOTE THIS IS NOT A GOOD PLACE TO STUDY OR HAVE AN EXTENDED CONVERSATION! There are no tables. There's a bench indoors and one outdoors. I didn't get a drink, but the drinks menu was extensive. The breakfast sandwich was really good. The bread was really high-quality, although it was a lot chewier than I expected. I don't recommend to someone with braces, but I'm glad I got it because I wanted to try one of their "regular" breads! My preference for crunch is a bit unusual, though. Even in NYC, I like toasted bagels when they're fresh out of the oven, so take my preferences with a grain of salt. Don't miss out on the savory croissants! My favorite was the everything croissant, but I also recommend the savory croissant (named that).

Amazing local bakery shop. The pastries are to die for. The monkey bread loaf was a hit with friends. The savory scones were also a hit.

Ask the Community - Hewn Bakery

Do they have Cinnamon Bun?

Yes! They have cinnamon brioche buns and I believe the morning buns have cinnamon as well. My favorite breakfast treat is kouign amann.

Do they have a cafe too? Al place to sit and east the pastries?

With Covid still rampant, this is not really a place to sit down. there ARE benches to sit at, but no 'tables' per se. Perhaps in the spring, outdoor seating will be available.

Inside they also have a record player for some ambiance and good music. Their chai is delicious! It was sweeter than I expected but I like it sweet too. On the spicy to sweet scale of chai, this is definitely on the sweet side, so if that's not your bag you'll want to select something else. The menu overall is small, but the drinks are pleasant. They had several scones and although I skipped those, another woman in the shop was buying a scone wheel to bake at home, so I don't deny they piqued my interest. There is a good deal of parking along the street here, but I don't think they have a parking lot. As of March 2023 they are open Friday through Sunday only (see my photo).

Please bring back the old version of COCO BREW. I'm begging…read more I've been a regular since they first opened a few years ago, I think around 2019? Their Coco Brew used to be one of my absolute favorite coffee drinks for years, up until recently. I'm not exactly sure when the recipe changed, because as far as I remember it still tasted the same through 2025. I've been busy this year and haven't come as often, but the last three times I ordered it, it was completely different. And since it was made by different baristas, I'm assuming this is a recipe change rather than just inconsistency. (Check the photos to see the differences!) The old version was much lighter, mildly sweet, and had that lovely coconut milk aroma. It tasted fresh, smooth, and really balanced. The new version is totally different. The first thing I noticed was the color. It's way darker now. And the taste matches: darker, more sour, and with a strange almost medicinal aftertaste (reminded of some cough medicine..) The gentle sweetness and mildness are completely gone. Now it somehow tastes strong, sour, and watery at the same time. What happened?? Please don't change something that was already so good. Even the ice seems different now. It used to have smaller ice pieces that filled the cup more evenly and let the liquid move through, so you got that really pretty layered look with the coconut milk and cold brew. Now it's large chunks of ice just floating on top. Anyway, this is just my little heartbreak over a drink that used to be so beautiful and delightful. Other than that, the vibe is still nice as usual, maybe a bit more crowded than before. The decor is still cute, and I've always liked the woody interior. It's also one of the brighter coffee shops in Evanston, with really nice natural light.

They offer organic French macarons, bread, cookies, jams, various pastries, and even ready-cooked meals that you can order in advance or pick-up in the store.
