I am starting to be addicted to everything they bake! Best place to buy sour dough Baguettes, flat breads , muffins , cookies and great sandwiches to go. I also love the oat latte and dark mattar coffee they serve and sell. Not your average bakery! They use the best ingredients and you can taste the difference. The smell of fresh baked bread brought me back to childhood the moment I walked in. The bread here is so good, they make amazing beer from the leftovers. That says a lot. I've had their "spent grain" bread with a beer, and believe me, it's why butter exists. I see Hewn Bakery truly as a "baker's bakery". This is how it should be done. Small batches, a straightforward storefront, and a strong selection of hand-crafted top-tier artisan goods at very reasonable prices for the quality you'll find here and not so easily elsewhere. When I walked in, they had plenty of helpful knowledgeable staff with expert opinions about how to mix and match items into something that you know will be well placed at the table when you get home. Look for the stickers on bread board - those are what's currently in stock. Or, you can look at the bread on the shelves, (if you can see past the customers!). While you wait for your bread to be hand-wrapped in paper and string, they also have a full espresso setup, complete with a fine selection of flavors for your latte, cappuccino, or other favorite drink. Be sure to check out the array of local exotic cheeses, (especially if you plan on wine later), and other odds and ends that may help supplement your next supper. Love this bakery, I have supported it since the pandemic and spread the word about their delicious coffee and baked goods. It just feels good to be loyal to something local. Hewn, your tomato caprese sandwich IS MY FAVORITE, but my mom and I noticed that over the last few months, there has been less and less cheese in the sandwich, it's almost like the baguette took over the whole thing. This is my Saturday morning breakfast spot! My spouse and I walk our dog first to Starbucks and then to Hewn for chocolate croissants and other various baked goods. Our dog also loves the croissants (without chocolate of course), so much so, that he knows the word, "Hewn." The chocolate croissants are delicious. In fact, most of the croissant pastries are excellent. The brioche is good but not great. If this place were ever to make a cronut, I guarantee it would sell like hot cakes. The artisan breads are very good. I also like their savory scones. I have not tried their coffees. What can I say, I am a Starbucks junkie. Moreover, Bagel Art sells Intelligentsia coffee right up the street. Hewn is a great addition to the neighborhood, offering some very fine artisanal breads, and the croissants are awesome. You will need to get their pretty early in the morning to get a chocolate croissant. They run out quickly! read more

I heard about this bakery from the woman who owns Rustic Tart, an artisan tart maker (whose tarts are absolutely to die for!). Anyway I went to Hoosier Mama in Evanston for breakfast and I figured I'd stop at Hewn for a loaf of bread. I selected the Garlic Parmesan Country loaf. They wrapped in in white paper with rope tie around it - I felt like I was in Europe! When I got home, I opened the bread and wow - it was beyond amazing! We now have a favorite bread shop in Evanston - it is probably the best you can get anywhere in the MidWest. We ate half of the loaf and then I asked my husband if I should put it away (AKA wrap and put it in the freezer). He said yes because if we didn't, he would eat it all! We didn't try any pastries as we were full from pie, but they looked absolutely incredible. Figure we will try some next time as we will be back very soon! read more

Hewn Bakery moved a closer to our home a few years ago making for a wonderful walk over to select such great tasting breads and other delicious goods. I have loved their sense of caring for their workers and the neighborhood community in addition to the safety precautions they have used since the pandemic started. As we go through this fourth wave of the virus, I appreciate Hewn's awareness of the safety of others and asking us to all mask up again before entering the store. This rating is solely based off of the their chocolate chip cookie. I need to start off by saying I had it FOUR DAYS AFTER I BOUGHT IT, and it was still the PERFECT combination of crunchy and chewy. I've lived in Evanston for a few years and just found this bakery based on a friends recommendation. If I could I would rate the food we bought separately, it would be a 5 for all the breads and a 3 for the other baked goods. We've bought different types of breads and every one was equally delicious. The other bakery was good but not as good as the breads. The lamination on the bakery was excellent, but the chocolate croissant definitely was light on the chocolate. Same thing with the cinnamon brioche- great baked good but light on flavor. I've also never seen them be anything but polite to all their customers when I've been in their- including their non-white customers. Sometimes its not the store being rude, its the customer that walks in with the chip on their shoulder. read more

I LOVE Hewn. Hewn is one place in Evanston that I 1) look forward to going to, 2) find excuses to go to, and 3) actually enjoy. The bread is actually good--like I'm eating things that have been made from real flour and baked in real ovens. I've loved everything I've had at Hewn from their kouign amann to their croissants and their fruit brioches. The one thing I didn't particularly love was their feta dill brioche--it was just a little too salty for my taste but I guess that's to be expected from feta. The pastries flake to perfection and melt in your mouth. Eating a Hewn pastry is kind of like taking a bite out of heaven. I would love to get a baguette or one of their loaves and have brunch at my place soon with some friends! (: It's a teeeeeeeeny pricey for my college student budget but maybe it's better that way. If it was cheaper, I'd probably be eating bread every day which would neither be good for my wallet or my waistline. read more

Pastry window was filled with fruit flies.They were in direct contact with the food. I spotted at least 5 when I made it to the front of the line. Wish I had seen them before I ordered. When I pointed it out to the cashier, she replied with a nonchalant "Yeah..." The fact that the cashier would be so cool about an obvious food safety issue suggests to me that this is the status quo here. The second you walk into the bakery your mouth will begin watering! Whether it is the savory or sweet, Hewn has plenty of options. I loved their olive brioche because it was the perfect consistency with just the right amount of sumac that melted in my mouth. It might not be the cheapest, but it is definitely worth it for the quality. Baking is an art that Hewn has mastered. The staff (and it's a women-owned business) was cheery and nice. Yep, they are the real deal. The sour dough bread is incredibly balanced and once you toast it you're hooked. The croissants are made by wizards and the cinnamon rolls should be bought by the box. so glad i listened to a podcast about sourdough several weeks prior to visiting Hewn so i didn't reel in confusion and hysteria when the bakery answered my question of "do you have any sourdough" with "everything we bake here is sourdough". for those of you who are reeling in C&H right now, a sourdough starter is the standard rising agent that was used for millennia before baker's yeast before a shelf-stable baker's yeast was invented and popularized in the mid-20th century. like all things industrial, baker's yeast was convenient, not as good for you, and not as delicious (subjective opinion)! that's why i love Hewn and all their varieties of sourdough bread, croissants, and pastries. my bf got the everything bagel croissant which i thought was going to be strange since there was just a dollop of baked cream cheese in the middle, but it actually turned out to be delicious. I got a hunk of ciabatta and just ate it plain and it was rly good... interesting fun fact: sourdough starters greatly vary across cultures, geographic locations, and between individual owners. but what mostly differentiates sourdough starters from each other is not gluten content, flour type, or distance from sea level. it is the microbes that subsist on the skin of the baker! read more

Today we had the chicken salad sandwich and the Ruben. The Ruben was quite tasty, but it had to be grilled at home-they don't grill it at Hewn, maybe because of Covid? The bread for the chicken salad sandwich was quite dry and there was not a lot of chicken salad in it. Strawberry pastry was delicious but the chocolate croissant had almost no chocolate in it. I noticed that if you order food online you can pick it up in 48 hours at the earliest. You have to show up in person to order food and get it immediately. Their breads are delicious. read more

Stopped in for the first time on a recent Saturday afternoon. They were out of almost everything except pastries, which is not something I'm interested in, and whole-wheat bread, which I try to avoid on principle. But since I was there and it was a new place I thought I'd give it a try. I love bread--and this bread was amazing. I guess it was whole wheat because it was brown, but it was much more like a sourdough or country loaf in flavor. Great crust, wonderful texture for ww bread, tons of flavor. I'm guessing they use a starter that's been alive for a while, because it's rare to get this much flavor from whole wheat anything. I'm totally impressed and will definitely be back. Since the moment they opened, Hewn has been my go-to bakery. From their artisan bread to blueberry muffins to their amazing polenta cake, you can't go wrong. When we lived in walking distance we'd regularly stand in line for some Sunday morning pastries with all the other Evanstonians who love this place. Lunch is equally delicious with grilled cheese, caprese sandwiches on a baguette, their especially yummy ruben, and flatbread on Fridays. Beyond the great selection of baked goods, the staff is wonderful. The owners are incredibly kind and hardworking and their staff reflects that. They remember their regulars, are helpful to new customers who are unfamiliar with their layout and it's impossible to not feel welcome when you walk into the space.
