I wish there were 6 stars!! In addition to their beyond excellent and healthy and wonderful bread, they are currently making pastries with fresh strawberries. Love me a good cafe/bakery! Going in there had a line and the line didn't particular take too long. It seemed like they ran out a lot of their fresh bakery items, but there still was a lot to choose from. My friend bought a sourdough loaf & it was gorgeous! We didn't get to try it, but it looked good. I bought a chocolate chip cookie, 1 chocolate croissant, 1 plain croissant, 1 ham and cheese croissant, no pics listed below. - Their croissants are honestly really good, crispy and flaky. - The chocolate chip cookie was like a generic chocolate cookie, nothing rly special about it. Also bought their brioche sandwich and I think it's overpriced for what it's worth. I think it had like their signature jam or something on it with a egg & bacon, it was $12. It's a tad bit pricy for something so basic. Overall, their service was fast. Their employees were nice and their ambiance was fun. I love me some fresh baked goods. I've been coming bi-weekly over the past few months. I really appreciate the high quality of Hewn's bread. I have to be careful though because everything looks so good especially if I see something new. I appreciate how some items are rotated throughout the week. Some of my favorites are the baguette, morning bun, monkey bread, holmenkollen, and durum. They also have special items on holidays such as king cake for fat Tuesday. Prices are on the high side, but for the quality you get, I feel it's worth it! read more

Very disappointed. The bakery recently raised its prices to the point where a single piece of coffee cake now costs $9. While I understand that prices can increase, charging that much for one slice feels excessive and hard to justify. In addition and unfortunately, the quality and portion size do not match the price. What used to be a place I enjoyed visiting has become far too expensive for what it offers. I will not be going back! read more

I was cautiously optimistic that I had found a place where I could eat croissants because they make a big deal on their website about how they only use local organic flour. Unfortunately, all that marketing is inaccurate - only their loaves are made of organic flour, the other bakery items are NOT ORGANIC. I'm glad I double and triple checked because their website leaves it unambiguous, as if they ONLY use organic, yet it's inaccurate. I'm intolerant to regular wheat, but can eat organic or Italian 00 wheat without having a reaction. The overall experience was also odd - there's a rope but no start or end, and no one knows who is next to be served, neither is it clear who behind the counter is even available to help. read more

They have the best bread, we always hold a few slices of hewn country loaf to freeze for sandwich and toast emergencies. And it is impossible to drive away without eating a morning bun in the car (not sorry). You can close your eyes and point at the bakery case - anything you choose will be amazing. I bought a FOURTEEN DOLLAR sandwich and it had very little inside and LOTS of thick bread. Could not believe what a bad deal this is!!!, Yes the contents were tasty but nothing about it said $14 sandwich. Very disappointing..when they were $10 i thought they were expensive. A line out the door on the Saturday morning before Easter should be a good indicator at this place's popularity. The Great Harvest a few blocks down did not boast the same we noticed. They were out of the ciabatta bread we wanted, but we ended up getting a baguette to try. It smelled amazing and was very similar to what I had in France. We also drooled over the chocolate Almond croissant which is so messy but so worth it. The combination of the Almond, chocolate and buttery pastry was heavenly. We also had the canela(sp?) which the very attentive employee explain had a custard creme brulee flavor. It wasn't as sweet as I expected but was really tasty. About a 1-1.5: We stopped by Hewn Bakery, as we had heard some great things about this place. We went earlier in the morning, and they still had a good selection to choose from. We picked up: +ham & cheese croissants +scones +cookies +morning buns +savory croissants +a galette Unfortunately, we weren't fans of the pastries, as they were cold and super chewy; I was surprised, as I thought that the items were baked fresh daily, but they seem to have been made a day+ in advance and are just 'defrosting' on the racks. Super disappointing. Service was okay, but could have been more friendlier and dressed with a smile. This is more of a to-go type of place, but I can see it's a favorite amongst the locals. We stumbled into their Evanston location after a little mishap at their neighbor's (who will not be mentioned, but iykyk) shop next door. But, if it wouldn't have been for that mishap we wouldn't have gotten to try Hewn for the first time!! They had a variety of delicious looking pastries and a menu full of coffees, sandwiches, and other snacks. We grabbed the Everything Bagel Croissant and a Cinnamon Brioche! They were fantastic!! We heated the Cinnamon Brioche for just a few seconds and it was just lovely We're definitely returning for some sandwiches soon!! read more

Let's be real, bakeries are a dime a dozen in Evanston so it was real nice to find one where the pastries and baked goods are above beyond the rest. Hewn had a simple, open and rustic set up but it's great to see the baked goods all lined up for the day. I also saw the bakers at work in the kitchen, so I know I was going to get good quality pastries. I decided on the monkey bread and sticky bun and they're absolutely delicious! I paired them with coffee and it's even better! The man behind the counter was super nice and courteous and he even explained about their holiday order availability and cut off. Very busy on the weekends but worth the wait! The line moves quickly. Tons of pastries and bread options. We stopped in for a loaf of the country blonde sourdough because it was recommended that we try it! So delicious and fresh. They will slice it for you if you prefer. I love this place. Consistently amazing bread and pastries. Friendly staff without that creepy overly friendly, condescending that you sometimes get. Just nice people who clearly care about other humans and are passionate about the products they sell. It is nice to see small independently owned businesses in my community. The only problem is I overeat on my car ride home. I just ate 1/2 a baguette that was still warm. A tip I learned - baguettes come out after 10am and if you get there around that time you will get a warm baguette. Amazing! read more

I haven't been there in ages. I use a walker and after waiting in line to order, I was told they do not accept cash and I needed to go back to my car and get a credit card. Worse yet, I complied and when I returned, I was told to get back in line to pay -- even though my package was sitting on the counter. Amazing customer service and a renowned bakery. I didn't know they used to provide the bread at Sweetgreen, which was always chewy and admittedly my favorite part of the salad. NOTE THIS IS NOT A GOOD PLACE TO STUDY OR HAVE AN EXTENDED CONVERSATION! There are no tables. There's a bench indoors and one outdoors. I didn't get a drink, but the drinks menu was extensive. The breakfast sandwich was really good. The bread was really high-quality, although it was a lot chewier than I expected. I don't recommend to someone with braces, but I'm glad I got it because I wanted to try one of their "regular" breads! My preference for crunch is a bit unusual, though. Even in NYC, I like toasted bagels when they're fresh out of the oven, so take my preferences with a grain of salt. Don't miss out on the savory croissants! This is a great bakery in Evanston. It is perfect for on-the-go breakfast, drink, or snacks. The bakery is not great for hanging out or studying, though. Besides some seats for customers to wait for their orders, there is no place to sit and chat. Also, there is no bathroom. The ambiance is still pleasant overall. I think this bakery has amazing bread loaves. I do enjoy their pastries as well. However, their pastries don't stand out as much for me to reach a 5-star rating. I recommend the sticky bun or monkey bread if you like sweet. The chocolate croissant was a little too crispy and not moist enough for me, but I am not sure if that is just Hewn's style. I didn't like it as much. I might come back here to get a loaf if I am close, but I hear people say that this is one of the best bakeries read more

I stopped in today in hopes they may still have some of their St. Patrick's Day special: a Reuben croissant. They didn't have any on display but I asked just in case and I'm so glad I did, because there were still a few and I was able to snag a couple. I wasn't sure what I'd think of them but they are so good! There was cabbage in them too which was delicious but not something I was expecting, so it was a nice surprise. Honestly, I wish I'd gotten more than two, but I don't know how well a croissant can freeze. I also picked up a hot apple cider, because it's delicious and it's almost unheard of to find this somewhere outside of fall. I love that Hewn is always experimenting; even though they're a much loved bakery in the northern suburbs they don't rest on their popularity, they're always trying to mix it up. You know I'll be there for the next Liège waffle day and now that I know how delicious the Reuben croissants are, I might be there every day of St. Patrick's week if they do them again next year. read more

The brioche cinnamon roll looked delicious, but tasted underwhelming. It was more bread than anything. It just wasn't what I was expecting. It would have been better warm with more cinnamon and frosting. There's currently construction on the street so it is a bit difficult to get there or park. I also wish there was some seating. Best artisan breads in the area. There are a few other good bakeries around, but Hewn breads are all sourdough based. The bakery sells out early, they only make what they can sell in a day. You won't find bread on your way home from work. Space is cute and quiet, and staff are friendly and helpful. Yum. read more

I don't go here anymore after they botched a catering order for a work event with senior leaders. They got the pickup time wrong, so I had to wait an extra 30 minutes--making me late for a meeting I'd carefully planned. If it were a personal event, I might've let it slide, but this hurt my credibility at work despite me being up early and arriving on time. From the moment I was greeted with the intoxicating aroma of sugar & butter wafting in the air, I was spellbound. Immediately, a warm smile greeted me behind the counter. Do you carry any sourdough, I asked in my naïveté. To my delight, she replied that all their breads use a sourdough base (although the sourdough is faint in the baguettes). An olive loaf with a hint of lemon and a dash of herbs de Provence caught my eye. I asked for the gorgeous loaf to be sliced sandwich style and ordered an array of delicious looking plain croissants, pain Au chocolate, monkey bread and morning bun for a friend. All the trays of pastries looked fresh and tempting. They also offer a huge selection of coffee and carry teas and other goodies for sale. I stopped in while I was waiting for a doctor's appointment around the corner that I showed up way too early for. I was hoping to find a nice place to sit down and enjoy a baked good and a latte but was surprised to find they did not have a seating area (or bathroom, unless I missed it), only benches where you can wait for your order to be ready. This is probably my only reason for not giving Hewn 5 stars. All of the employees were super kind and looked like they enjoyed working there, which created such good energy. Everything in the pastry counter looked so fresh and delicious, I was completely overwhelmed by all of the options because I wanted to try everything. When I asked about the Canele, the gentleman behind the counter described it as a custard based treat, soft on the inside and a little crispy on the outside. I appreciated his description and it looked so yummy that I ordered it. I probably could've eaten 10 of those things. For my drink, I ordered one of their specials which was a Strawberry Matcha Latte and it was such a beautiful balance of matcha and fresh strawberry flavor, perfect for summer. If I ever want to grab-and-go some baked goods or coffee while I'm in the Evanston area, I will 100% choose Hewn. I'm dying to try their monkey bread next! read more

Place was recently named one of the best bakeries in some random publication. So glad I paid attention because the final product was delicious. I had the chocolate croissant, cinnamon brioche, fruit galette, & monkey bread. They were about $5 a piece which is cheap as far as Chicago prices go & while I went 1st thing in the morning I didn't have to brave the Bundt of sold out items. I'm curious to try a sandwich or their kombucha but my 1st visit more than surpassed my expectations read more

Came here twice hoping to get a tuna sandwich but both times they were completely sold out. I wish there was an option to order online the day of but it seems that you can only order days in advance. I have tried both the savory and the everything croissant. Both are delicious but I prefer the savory (less messy when eating in the car). The croissants are flaky and not overly buttery. I also had a matcha latte and the the matcha flavor is good and it was well blended (not powdery). Overall, we will be back (hopefully with a tuna sandwich in tow)! read more

The bread looked good but I actually went there for Janie's bread flour. They didn't have the high gluten bread flour that I was looking for. When I asked the counter person what the highest protein flour on the shelf was, she quoted me 5 grams per slice. Nice bakery, but I was directed there for something they didn't have. Their loaves of bread are all so sour. I am sure they will have an elitist response about sourcing their grains etc. but I have eaten bread all over the world, years in France as well. This is simply sour and the crust is too hard. The people who work at the store are kind. In the past they were snobs who refused to put the bread through a bread slicer. Not my favorite bakery. I want to really love Hewn, and there really is quite a bit to love. The bakery itself is cozy and well thought out, it's a really good place to sit and enjoy some coffee while enjoying a treat and reading in the morning. The bread, as you probably already know, is similarly excellent, a rotating assortment of top quality stuff. As far as the pastries and cookies, they're certainly good, but don't stand out in the same way. The filling in the galette is more of dollop on top, not permeating through like some other spots will do. And, while the gingersnap cookie had pretty decent flavor, it was dry and not very complex. This is the #1 bread bakery in all Chicagoland. Worth a pilgramage. Come early and get it still warm! Crunchy crust and big airy holes - mmmm. Many breads to select from. The croissants are what originally drew me in and they are wonderful! Crispy, buttery, perfect! If you eat one in the car you'll find flakes for days afterward. Everything I've tried here has been so, so good! Today I got the kouign amman, the almond croissant (with a delicious almond paste filling), and the sticky bun. All were excellent. My favorite is probably the kouign amman. Imagine a croissant, but in a muffin shape and coated with a sweet sugar glaze! Yum! The street parking immediately outside is metered, but if you're willing to park a block or two away, you should be able to find some free parking! read more
