Beautiful pastries/cakes!! They seemed too precious to eat but my sweet tooth tore through the box before I could admire it some more(not before I took pictures of them though) I can't remember what the names were of each pastry/cake but I posted some pictures. The cakes were light and not too sweet but felt that it was too pricey. The shop is nestled in a little a mall strip so it's easy to miss. There is no place to sit so come here for great dessert after eating from other great restaurants in the area Staff was not very welcoming and they seemed hesitant to honor the yelp deal which made things very awkward. Do NOT buy Groupons here. The owner/manager was rude, unreliable, and unprofessional. She didn't honor the Groupons. They were closed for over a week at time and on the day the Groupon expired. The cakes were mediocre. I saw a deal on Groupon and thought it would be a great opportunity because I needed a birthday cake. I bought three $10 Groupons. The week I needed the birthday cake, I went in during their business hours but there was a sign on their door that they were closed for about a week. I was so disappointed. I went back this week during business hours and again, there was a sign on the door that they were closed that day--the day the Groupon expired! The sign said they would honor Groupons for the next three days but unfortunately, that was only partially true. I went back two days later and the owner said I could only use one Groupon. She said I needed to come back two more times because they only honor one Groupon at a time. She also said that she would not honor the full price of the third Groupon. I had to explain that that was my third time there and that they were closed the previous two times during business hours. I asked to speak to the manager and she said she was the manager. I asked to speak to her supervisor and unfortunately, she said she was the owner. After arguing with her and explaining that I would have used all the Groupons before the expiration date had they been opened in the first place, she finally agreed to let me use the Groupons but she only honored two and the cash value for the third one. As the owner, she had the power to honor the Groupons but she just decided not to. That goes to show how much she cares about customer service. Also, I had driven 45 minutes each way just to get to this bakery three times. I spent 4.5 hours in the car! What a waste! It doesn't make sense to get this Groupon, especially if you don't live around Skokie and if you don't have time to make multiple trips. If you do, definitely call ahead to make sure they are open. read more

I have ordered from Ovy's twice and both times I was pleased with the quality of the product and the speed with which it was delivered. My first order was for cozonaci (walnut bread) and brinzoici (sweet cheese stuffed egg bread.) With my second order, I added smoked Romanian sausage (carnatzi.) The quality of the baked goods is impeccable. The brinzoici are sweet and slightly lemony and the cozonac is swirled with a generous paste of ground nuts. Although I have not yet cooked the carnatzi, they appear plump and juicy, indicative of being freshly made. They will let you order throughout the week and take down your number and information. When they are ready to ship, they call you back and let you pay by credit card over the phone. Shipping is 18.00, but it is well worth it for me because we do not have access to this quality of Romanian product here in the Detroit area. I have sent gift packages to relatives in other states and they too, were pleased with the packaging and speed of delivery. With the most recent shipment, they even included a lovely Christmas card! I am very pleased with Ovy's product and I am very glad that he brings authentic Transylvanian style food products to all of us in strainatate (living abroad.) read more

We were in area and dropped in and tried a couple of the pastries and cakes and they were ok. They have 5 bar stools for eating in if you want but it's a fairly spartan setup. They also serve Intelligentsia coffee, and you get a free small cup with any pastry purchase. They've been open about a year. read more

First thing I was looking for Ovy Bakery but I end up with my GPS the place call Maria . Looks like previous owner sell the business and left . Different people bought the business . I got there and nobody answer me for 5 minute . There was not many pastry since it's run by new owner . Anyways I end up buying few different sweets .. I didn't like none of them only the honey cake That honey cake slice was the bomb I definitely will go back for only honey cake and I recommend to others to try . It`s not much of a dine in, he has a few chairs, but if you have no patience to make it home and eat, that`s good enough! You should try it! read more

The pastries here are amazing and I'm absolutely thrilled to have found out about this place. I went in upon the recommendation of a friend and bought several pastries to try. They were all delicious, which was a sentiment echoed by my colleagues who also tried the cakes. I decided to order two big cakes for a party, a big dobos and a long pineapple-orange creamy tort. The owners were very accommodating in figuring out what to get and what size. Ovy also did a *fabulous* job decorating both cakes (even though I had only really asked for a small decoration on one). They both looked absolutely terrific and got lots of ooohs and aaahs at the party. Most importantly, people thought they were fantastically delicious. I have never seen so much of a birthday cake disappear at a party. It wasn't cheap, but what customized cake is? And again, the quality was superb. "Ovy Bakery" appears on the window of the storefront, but it's easy to miss, so instead you can look for the "La Patisserie" sign. This bakery is located in a strip mall on the south side of Dempster; parking is available in the lot and on the street. We tried the L'Opera and Savarina cakes, and they looked beautiful, but tasted awful. For L'Opera, the flavor was fine, but the cake was unpleasantly dense; and for Savarina, the cake and cream were fine, but the overwhelming taste/smell of cheap alcohol made it unpalatable. I certainly don't recommend these two cakes, but perhaps the other cakes and pastries are better. read more

First time, I walked into their store and stood there for several minutes, listening to conversations in the back room, while nobody cared to assist. This time around, I called to place an order for a birthday cake, well in advance (as in 6 days in advance), and was told - probably by the owner himself - that he was a very busy man, and could not take the order. My wife is from Transylvania and over the years, I've loved sampling the various cakes on our annual visits to her homeland. My wife was excited when she saw a Groupon pop up for this bakery...we would finally have the opportunity to have somee of our favorite sweets here in America We arrived at 6:00 on a Saturday...an hour past closing. Unfortunately, I looked at the wrong Transylvanian bakery online to get the hours. Not looking for a closed sign or seeing the hours, I pulled on the handle and it was open...but it looked closed as I peeked inside. I think it Was Ovy who peeked out from the kitchen. I asked if they were closed, and he said "Yes, but you're fine..." He was very welcoming and explained to us some of his specialties. Past the service, his cakes are fantastic. His cream is heavenly. My wife and I ordered 4 treats and each has been impressive...mostly on the smoothness and balance of his creme. My wife has always bragged about Dobos, as it's one of Transylvania's most famous cakes. I never understood what was special about it until having Ovy's version. the way he integrates the creme into the cake and builds a balance between the cake and the creme is delectable. His round cakes are a treasure that leave your tastebuds dancing from it's sinful flavor for many minutes after finishing your treat. Then to top it off...his prices are very reasonable. It's about $3 for most of the cakes and $5 for his round cakes. As a side note: He sells Kurtoskalacs from Chimney Cake Island...another one of my favorite Transylvanian deserts. I am giving two starts because the pastries and cakes are actually delicious, if you can ever find what you are looking for. Most of the times the shop has very limited selection. Even though they advertise a great variety of sweets on facebook, you can rearly find what you actually made the trip for. The owner and the lady who serves at the counter are very unfriendly, don't care about customers amd the overall custmer service it's just horrible. You end up leaving the store empty handed and with a bad feeling on how they treated you. They have no idea what kind of pastries will they serve the next day or the next few days, nor do they care about pleasing the customer. If you inquire about the upcoming selection, they just roll their eyes at you. Maybe they should come up with a daily menu and stick to it, and make sure customers are aware on the daily selections. I really like the pastries but won't be back because of custmer service and lack of selection. read more

Bought the 3 Groupons. 1st one: dobosz and chocolate decadence (I think that's the name). 2nd one: plain cheesecake, chocolate mousse wedge covered in ganache, and creme. 3rd one: 3 dobosz. First, the bad news: the cheesecake had a strange off flavor, and the creme (a square that purported to be of pastry creme) was fairly gelatinous and had very little flavor. Better: the decadence (round chocolate thing) was OK, but nothing to write home about, and not worth $5.85 (the other pastries were $3-$3.50). The chocolate mousse wedge was also OK, but not impressive. The dobosz was better, but only if grading on a curve. I'd been looking forward to tasting the wares here, but unfortunately none of the pastries stands up very well when put up against places selling similar items, like Sel Marie or Rolf's. Great Dobos, perfect balance of the cream vs. "cake" layer, and not too sweet, just perfect again. The "Cremes" was delicious and so was the "Honey" one with a harmonious tart fruit taste. We had OVY cater my daughters wedding yesterday at Stan Mansion in Chicago. The food was out of this world! Grilled lettuce salad, leek and potato soup artfully plated, hanger steak with a potato Gillette, a delicious chicken breast over roasted veg and a vegetarian option I didn't taste. Boy did they do a good job! Everyone loved the food and said it was the best wedding food ever - and we've all been to a lot of weddings. I went to this bakery to buy pastries for my son-in-law who was celebrating Orthodox Easter. While there, I inquired about a donation for an upcoming fundraiser at my church. The girl told me to call back after Easter and speak to the owner. When I called the following week, the owner was VERY RUDE to me. She said, "N0!! I DON'T WANT TO DO THAT! and just hung up on me". This is not a good way to assure repeat customers. She could have at least declined politely and not slammed the phone down. I will NEVER buy anything from this place again. I wanted to pick up a little treat for my friend for his birthday and when I looked for the closest bakery through GPS, it led me here. It's a very small cute store with a number of beautiful treats. There wasn't much of a selection, but it's possible that may have been because I went 30 minutes before it was about it close. The little desserts really looked like works of art and I almost felt like I shouldn't even touch them. I chose two of the desserts I thought were the prettiest but I wanted to get more. They were very small and $4.50 a piece but I wouldn't say it wasn't too pricey for how beautiful and delicious they looked. The store itself is very small so don't expect to stay here and eat the dessert, more of a take it and go kind of place. I didn't get to try the dessert but I assume it was very good, because my friend asked me where I had gotten the dessert the next day. I do wish the owner had been a little more welcoming or friendly. He just didn't seem happy and kind of seemed angry. It was a little intimidating just being a customer. Wonderful Romanian cakes along with some classics like Opera and Sacher. If you have time to sit ask for the "papanasi" a freshly fried doughnut, dough made with farmer's cheese and served with cream and jam. Brought back wonderful memories. I found this bakery through Groupon, and I am so glad I did! The pastries are absolutely ethereal! We tried the chocolate cake, which had a not-too-sweet, wonderfully textured ganache, and a confection that had both mango and yuzu mousse. It too was not too sweet and intensely flavored. I can't wait to go back and try the Dobos torte and other pastries. Prices are between $3.50 and $5.50 for individual portions, most of which could serve two. Very reasonable for the quality. read more
