I loved checking out their shelves of jams, pickled veggies, and other nicely packaged boxes that could be great for gifts! Saturday early in the afternoon, stopped for a cup of coffee. Three employees. Line got longer after we placed our order. But our order came out pretty quickly. I got blended hazelnut with cold brew large for $5.70. I did not add any flavors or whipping cream. However, it was still sweet with hazelnut flavor. I loved it! I had tried (and loved) St Roger items at the Chicago Kristkindlmarkt, but this was my first visit to their Wilmette outpost. It's a small, sunny bakery packed with all kinds of delicious, organic French specialties. Breads, viennoiseries, tarts, gorgeous pastries and so much more are on offer at reasonable prices. The sisters support their order by selling their products all of which are made at their sustainable farm in Gays Mills. This store has seasonal produce, jams, eggs and even some heritage ducks ready to roast. Plan to grab a light meal - sandwiches, homemade soup and salads are available. I had a Petit Lorraine which gave me a tasty ham/cheese quiche, a Carmel-y crisp Palmier and a drink. All delicious, all high quality. The Sisters have a beautiful wine list to accompany your meal. If you want something special, you can order ahead and they'll have it waiting for you. I went with my mom and sister and we bought a shameful amount of treats to take home. I stopped by here after church on a Sunday morning for some coffee and pastries. I asked if I could purchase the beignets individually and was told they were only sold by the dozen, but not to worry, they would not last, lol. She wasn't wrong! On a Sunday morning while craving a chocolate croissant, I found St. Rogers Abbey on Yelp and came to the conclusion that if I bought baked goods from nuns it would make up for the fact that I wasn't going to church. Excited to be rid of the weekly guilt that is the decision to not go to church and eager to try the croissant, I hopped in the car. In downtown Wilmette, St. Roger's was easy to spot as it was the only place open and a nun was sweeping the sidewalk. Inside, the place has an antique feel and the nuns were welcoming. It's not a place I would linger for coffee but that's okay because all I wanted was to order my croissant and go. At the register, the nun asked if I wanted anything else, and a wave of catholic guilt overcame me and pressured me to buy a loaf of bread too. Had I not bought it, I would have given the place 5 stars because the croissant was one of the best I have ever had. However, I also had the bread and it did not taste right. Go for the pastries, but sadly I cannot recommend this as a one-stop shop for all your baked good needs. read more

I came upon this bakery by accident but it was such a great accident. The sisters who run this French patisserie are so polite and you can tell, really love what they do. Great options for all tastes. The tiramisu was one of the best I've ever had and the chocolate tart was notably made with high quality chocolate. I really don't get the hype. The croissants we tried were basically inedible. I was expecting a super authentic experience but it was the exact opposite. My husband lived in France for a number of years and couldn't get over that these are supposed to be French nuns. Hearty... 3.5 for my overall experience. Had I followed Gerry G's advice to have my croissant warmed up, I might have enjoyed it even more. I've been to the Vernon Hills location, and this stop feels much smaller with less product, but nonetheless it's all very delicious and authentic...and mostly organic. I also think it's a lovely addition to the Wilmette community. I really appreciated my hearty chocolate/almost croissant. It was dense and not light and falling apart, flaky like so many other croissants I've had. Also, there was no skimping on the filling. But, take Gerry's advice and have it warmed up. The service was friendly, though we were overcharged a bit. When we tried to explain more than once, the cashier didn't seem to understand and we gave up trying. We didn't have cash and needed to use our debit card. Since they have a rule that you need to spend $10 to use a card, we ordered up an Americano and a vanilla latte. Apparently the espresso is the way to go. I typically find an Americano to be too strong, but I enjoyed it more than my vanilla latte. Bold and smooth. My croissant was $3.90 and worth it. The other pastries and desserts seemed pricey in the case, but I bet they are completely over the top delicious. Next time I'm coming for the baguette! Hope they add more product :-) read more

This is a wonderful little French bakery. The service is always timely and friendly. The sisters always appreciate each and every customer. It is squeaky clean and immediately came running when my husband spilled all of his coffee. The classical music and quietness makes you want to linger for hours and have another treat and more coffee. I'm glad to see that they are now open on Sundays.
