I stopped in yesterday morning after taking the furry kids to the Green Valley off the leash dog park. About half an hour after the bakery opening for the day. The breads are delicious. I enjoy the low carb whole wheat bread. And I occasionally buy the old fashion white bread. Putting both loafs in a paper bag I remarked to the lady at the counter how heavy they are. She smiled and nodded. I also purchased a fresh out of the over blueberry scone. Driving back home I enjoyed piece by piece the delicacy as if it was manna from heaven. It is out of this world. Stop me I'm salivating for another one. Let me light a cigarette and inhale after the goose bumps go down. Pillow talk with a scone. It's a great bakery with friendly staff and owners. Highly recommended. I'm not a fan of the over commercialization of Naperville but I'm definitely a big believer in the goodness of Great Harvest Bread and their delicious delights. read more

It smells so good inside! I tried this bakery through Too Good to Go. For $5.99, I received the monkey bread and a spinach feta bread. The monkey bread is delicious and barely lasted a day. I tried some of the feta bread and froze the rest. I'd go back to try other items! read more

I have been buying bread cookies and scones since this location opened well over 20+ years ago. I am not sure why I have never done a review on them, but I am finally doing one now. First, I hope the pictures do justice to the fact that the bunny cookie for the Easter season and spring season is huge. It is a classic sugar cookie with colored frosting and it was tasty. Their scones are what I consistently come back because they are the size of my head, and they are the absolute perfect consistency and can be shared if you choose to do so. I however prefer to eat the whole thing in one sitting. When it comes to bread, have a great bread menu that rotates depending on the day and they also have some consistence that are always there every day. Some of my favorites are the honey wheat and the cinnamon chip, which makes great toast as well as standard white bread. If you don't buy bread and scones and cookies here. I know this is a chain so I believe it is consistent as far as the offerings and the recipes. This is the worst bakery I've been to. When we entered, we were not greeted at all. I spoke and ordered and the cashier was not helpful nor attentive. I asked for tea, and the employee was being instructed by a coworker how to make tea. Rather than taking the help, she asked, "what difference does it make?!" She then grabbed a coffee spoon to push the tea bags into the water, even as I asked her not to. This was the most unpleasant and unprofessional experience I have had in any bakery. David was really great when I came in to visit today to satisfy my craving for an apple fritter... next best thing is something I had many years ago the apple scrapple, but luckily they sell it in a mini version now'. I also got the sample the monkey bread, as well as an asiago pesto bread that was out of this world . It's a very spacious place with not a lot of people sitting in front of their computers .. but there's good tunes playing on the radio and David was wonderful. I could see him behind the counter, suggesting to somebody who is looking at the Irish soda bread that this might be the last that they're doing it and the guy swooped up both loaves. I intern suggested that the gentleman try some of the bread on the board because he didn't get to taste anything from a bread shop that his sister had been raving about being the only place that locally she buys fresh bread from. And turns out they build their own bread flour here maybe that's why it's so delicious and a little bit more pricey than you would expect... this gentleman and I discussed that if it's this good, it's worth it. read more

It's a bakery for giants! Dinner-plate cookies, football-sized scones, and cinnamon rolls to feed a family of four...of course I eat them all by myself. Central Street is blessed with at least four top notch bakeries; this one is my favorite for non-cookie sweets. Everything is always really really good. Was on Central Street for lunch at Lush but was a little early so we walked into Great Harvest and we're blown away the Gigantic scones. These scones are big and heavy and could be thrown around as a stone for a Scottish Festival/Highland games. It's also a great selection here, I chose the chocolate covered chocolate chip scone. I cut into quarters and had that over a period of 4 days, I just warmed it up for about 14 seconds in the microwave. I would like to try all the other scones, especially the blueberry versions. As mentioned by other reviewers, the dude handling the register could be a little friendlier but that won't stop me from getting more scones.:) read more

So here's the thing... Great Harvest has some of the best baked goods in the area and HANDS DOWN the best sandwiches. The fact this place has a 3.3 star rating is sad and not reflective of the food in any way shape or form. It's honestly a 4.5 star place from a food standpoint. They try out a lot of new recipes and occasion there is a "miss" but it's pretty far and few between. While I love Hewn, this is not the same type of bakery, and I actually prefer Great Harvests more traditional style of baked goods 75% of the time. They are fundamentally two different types of bakeries with their own strengths and weaknesses. If you are looking for a vegan spelt loaf and a macchiato, go to Hewn. If you want a bakery treat in the morning like a scone and a black coffee on your way to the Metra, go to Great Harvest. So let's address the issue that EVERY negative review focuses on here -- the interpersonal skills of the staff. I'm sad that so many people here have given one star ratings because they feel "put off" by a staff member. The folks working are perfectly nice people. They may not be as young and bubbly as what you might find at Backlot or as attentive to customers as the team at Hewn, but they are fine people trying to make a living. The baked goods and sandwiches are excellent and it's a wonderful amenity to have in the neighborhood. I don't think providing a 3 star customer service experience should negate the great product they provide in a timely fashion. Just my humble opinion. read more

Their Asiago pesto bread is fabulous, and their cinnamon crunch bread is perfect for French toast! They make sandwiches although I've never tried them. I mainly just come here when we need a special bread for something. Coming here can be overwhelming with so many choices, plus other baked goods besides just bread! I just wish the loaves were smaller so we could try more. I love their cinnamon rolls and cookies too...and banana bread...and carrot cake...and most of all I love that they have a menu with their schedule! read more

Well. Apparently the former creepy jerk owner sold the bread store and now it's run by two new younger folks. Having been out of state for a bit, I stopped in yesterday and while everything tastes pretty much the same, the store is filthy. The scones are still the size of a hub cap but pretty tasteless, which is disappointing. The two new owners were pretty clueless too - one had already put my two loaves out and the other went and fetched them again. The POS machine wasn't working either. These are small glitches that can happen at any store regardless of size I know. Mostly the store was messy and dirty. Will not be going back. There are plenty of clean bakeries and bread stores in Evanston. read more

I get angry when I see this poster. Don't bother going here unless you're a trendy gluten free eater. They bake the gluten free items in house with flour surrounding the supposed gluten free items. News flash, if it's that full of wheat flour, it's not even gluten free and it's wrong to advertise. I went in there once assuming they might be ordering gf items from an outside bakery which would be fun because I work down the street... how convenient. But... the guy inside the bakery asked "do you have celiac?" I said yes.. he shook his head no with a look on his face of disgust. I detest ads for gluten free like this that are totally false. I hate to leave a bad review but after multiple sour experiences at this shop, I feel obligated. I have frequented Great Harvest since I was a child (and my mom came here for years before then!) The breads are delicious and fresh, the cookies and scones are delicious and the sandwiches are wonderful as well. Five stars for their products, as expensive as they may be. I love to shop local whenever possible. Dave, the owner who works at the front counter has the worst attitude I have ever encountered. He doesn't greet a single person who walks in or smile. It would serve his business well to replace himself at the front counter with someone who does not hate humanity. I will miss the bread, but not his stale attitude. read more

I'm only leaving two stars because the bread is decent and the prices are reasonable. However I've gone to this place four times and the owner (I assume) makes me really uncomfortable. The first time I came in it took five minutes for him to take my order even though he was just standing around while a young girl made all the sandwiches herself then he didn't even greet me he just stared at me until I said hello and placed my order he said it will be a few minutes I said that's fine. It took 30 minutes.. I understand it was lunch time but he could have helped the girl making the sandwiches. He didn't even tell me my sandwich was ready.. again he just stared at me. Then I walk up and I said could I also get a coffee and he just pointed at the coffee which I gather was to let me know I had to get it myself but I could already see that just thought I should tell him so he could charge me for the coffee. After this experience I started ordering online to avoid a long wait during my lunch break. Every time I've gone in he has his mask down and only pulls it over his mouth when I walk up. He always has a weird passive aggressive attitude and never says hello, regardless I've been friendly say hello and tell him what Im picking up and tell him thank you and to have a nice day. Today he was like thank youuuuu over and over again just kept sarcastically saying thank youuuu.. very strange and I get really weird vibes. I was willing to see past all this weirdness the first few times but now I just feel I can't support a place I don't feel welcome. Not just that but the tomatoes on my sandwich were very unappetizing and I ended up taking them off the sandwich cause I worried they might make me sick. Not sure what this guys problem is his attitude is unsettling and if you see ingredients don't look good you should probably throw them away. Ok. Let's set this straight. My family has been coming here for years because their scones and baked goods are unlike any other bakery ever. The apple scrapple bread is simply heaven. The scones are positively massive and the moistest, greatest scones to ever grace the earth (go get yourself a cinnamon chip scone, you will NOT regret it). They stay wonderful for days and they're not like those wimpy ones you see at Starbucks or coffee shops. These scones deserve their own category. But.... the guy who owns this place is "eccentric" and makes everyone uncomfortable. Not sure what his deal is. Just move near the area and I thought I give local businesses a chance . I bought this premium white bread and scones , the scones looked attractive and tasted ok at first but left me with bitter aftertaste and odd aroma in the scones, I tried the bread for grilled cheese and it took a while to brown it even with butter , I thought it was very dense and somewhat raw and the the aroma similar to the scones. Great small town bakery feel that has the best fresh bread. This makes the best sandwiches ever. The staff are just the best.

I purchased quite a few of their sweets, not so much their bread, so caveating this review with that. We got multiple scones, a cinnamon roll, and an apple dapple (?) bread/cake. They were all just ok, they were large in size and weren't overly expensive for the quantity, but the quality/taste were just mediocre. The scones were on the drier side, with the ones with frosting being tastier (of course, sugar alert!). They were huge but underwhelming. The cinnamon roll was also underwhelming, with not enough icing to moisten the actual roll itself. The apple dapple cake was tasty - it's similar to a coffee cake, but it was also on the drier side. There were also flies roaming about, landing on baked goods, and it didn't seem to be a concern of the staff, although everyone there were friendly. If you're looking to bring their items as a gift, be warned, they do not have "pretty" packaging on the ready. It's just the typical bakery boxes, so consider getting your own packaging if you're looking to pretty these puppies up! read more

I have gone here for years !! Year after year I have always enjoyed going there and usually have fun with the guy who works there....BUT that has all changed! I have never felt so uncomfortable with the owner/manager i tried several times to strike up a conversation and or make him laugh to change his mood!!! He was so rude and just unhappy told me several times that the place was for sale and he was struggling to stay open. Honestly he really should close the reviews have gotten awful! I am not the only one who has noticed! I used to love coming here but would much rather buy elsewhere. After watching some bread mukbang I got cravings. So I decided to find a bread shop. I tried this store since it's my first time here. Their place was clean and inviting. They have lot of breads in their selection. Some staff greeted me. It's hard to choose because all of their bead looks delicious. I ask staff if what will he recommend to me or the best sellers. I tried their Wildcat Scones and I order a3 pieces of it. While he packs it I taste it while choosing another bread. I also bought hard cookies because it's my sister favorite.
