Road tripping and in Templeton, CA. While driving down South Main Street, we eyed the Hewitt Hardware building. Noticing the brick building with a 1899 marker on the top of the left side of the building and a 1923 marker on the other, we made a point to stop to check out the hardware store. We do appreciate functioning hardware stores housed in historic buildings. The hardware store is an Ace hardware. An actual operating hardware store. The Hewitt family has owned the shop since 1923. Pretty darn cool. The shop is filled with hardware items for the home and ranch. They carry typical Ace hardware inventory. Prices were actually competitive. I saw items priced cheaper than my local Ace Hardware in the Sacramento/Placerville area. As we walked about the historic building, we can see the interior where the older (pre 1923) and the newer (1923) building begins. Other than that, nothing historic inside..The interior was modern and clean with well organized inventory. Staff was welcoming. The young man even listened to Hubs stories of the oldest hardware store west of the Mississippi in Placerville, CA (est 1856) which is in our neck of the woods. We even stopped to speak with the owner of the new shop opening next to Hewitt Hardware. He was working on the outside porch area. We struck up a brief conversation. He and his wife were opening up a boutique and leather goods shop. He is a leather craftsman making handcrafted goods. The shop's soft opening is on July 3rd in time for the big ole Fourth of July Templeton parade. read more

We love these guys. Hewitt's isn't a big box store, but we've always found what we needed in a pinch- they do a fantastic job of covering the most common or pressing needs. Prices are always reasonable. My husband stopped in right after we closed on our house to have some wood cut (or similar), and the employee- the gentleman with the truly majestic handlebar mustache- remembered what tools we did or didn't have at home the next time that he stopped by. Where else do you have that kind of personalized service? This morning, with big leaking going on in our garage at home, I raced over pre-8 AM soaked, with my hair somehow still on fire, and in urgent need of tarps to cover our belongings and try to get things secured. Hewitt's already had their doors unlocked/open, despite it technically being before their store opened, and their staff was super friendly and helpful immediately. They got me checked out and on the road before they were even technically open. It rained, and the weeds grew! Stopped into Hewitt's Hardware to get weed killer. In the past, their price has been better than other local outlets from SLO to Paso. This time, it was again. A major asset of an old-fashioned hardware store is the service and advice one can receive far exceeds any major box store(s). The staff at Hewitt's is very friendly and knowledgeable in all aspects in the use of and application of their merchandise. Another plus is that many items are available by weight or per piece. If you need a few or limited number of an item, you don't have to generally purchase a whole box you don't need. Support local family-owned businesses. read more

LOCO Take: CRAZY GLUE MECCA....specifically produced by the geniuses nearby, at Bob Smith Industries, in Atascadero, CA. Yes, it is made here in America! Yes, I am kind of a Crazy, Crazy Glue fanatic. Why? Well I have seen or used it for anything from killing AVM Brain Tumors by injecting them with microspheres, way back as a Brain Researcher at NYUMC, to fixing my designer William Henry Fossil Jewelry to hold up to showering with them on [ which is Taboo per William Henry designs]. Smith's Crazy glues come in all kinds of sizes and in various vicosities. Ultra-thin is either as vicious as water or even thinner....so this type is actually used by museums to help preserve fragile fossils. I stabilized my Dinosaur Bone, Fossil Coral, & Mammoth pieces from William Henry jewelry & knife collections [which again are made in America]. If you know anything about William Henry Knifes, they are kind of like the Rolexes of the Knife World...at least in terms of what America has to offer. Limited edition knifes that are made with exotic materials can cost a small fortune, but they are well worth it. They also hold alot of their value and you can always think of selling some of your stuff on Ebay to generate cash if you tire of a particular knife that you have. If you want an amazing EDC knife that is made in America, there is really none better and some of their more cost effect knifes can be had for $500 or less & will last a lifetime with careful use. I also used this CG type to brush onto my plethora of all kinds of custom or rare Japanese or French knives. It will permeate, stabilize, and coat exotic woods, bone, fossil Mammoth Ivory, Abalone, & more. Making practical use of fancy collectable knifes for kitchen use is a challenge & Bob Smith essentially made a higher end knife collection much more kitchen friendly. I am sure that most of my treated knifes will outlive me by decades. Not sure my nephews will care about such heirlooms, but hey, I get a kick out of them. It sure makes cooking prep much more fun....as in what exotic beautiful knife will I use today to delicately slice homemade Sashimi or make paper thin slices out of local Farm Fresh Tomatoes that were just picked a few hours ago? Strangely, I was even able to save my Toto Drake toilet from a pricey fix, since I combined Baking Soda with Crazy Glue, to make sort of a quick set substance, to fix the cracked inside plastic collar, that holds the handle in place. While I also have the cheap Chinese tiny squeeze packets of cheaper Crazy Glue for other lesser purposes, Bob Smiths, is far better and has a shelf life of a few years, at least when you get 2-8 oz bottles of it. While they say that it would last longer in the frig, I do not bother. While this hardware store does not carry every Bob Smith item, they do carry enough for most uses. While they do overlay an ACE label on the item, you can still see on the back of the bottle a tiny Manufacture by BSI Atascadero, CA printed in small font, below the bar code. Of course, this vintage place that has cool vintage glass electric line insulators in the window has tons of character as does the rest of Main St.. I would definitely give these nice people your business over the big chain stores in a heartbeat, especially if you just need that odd or end type of thing. For those who are older, it will bring back memories of days long gone. For those who are younger, it may give you a sense of what America was like many decades ago....and what was lost by "progress" & the faceless sameness of Big Box store chains. If you happen to be in the area for Templeton Park's wonderful Saturday Farmers Market & happen to have a Crazy need for Crazy Glue, then you are blessed....since Hewitt's has the best in the country! Even better, their price is lower than Amazons and since it is made just a few miles away, it is super fresh & American made. Who knew? If you miss the Farmers Market, believe it or not Templeton Pizza is a rare local Mecca of really rare [for this area] Greek eats, such as homemade fresh Dolmas & Baklava. The cool health food/wine/ EVOO shop store on Main St. is also a nice stop. When you finish exploring Main St., just a short drive away will bring you to the wonders of the Tin City area...complete with local Pasta, Sheepmilk Ice cream, Distillary, Breweries, EVOO, & more. While most tourists go across the freeway to get seafood nearby, it is not nearly as great as Morro Bay, which can be just a short drive away over a more obscure road. As an exploring local, it is amazing what one can find cruising around SLO County. Who benefits? The lucky few who read my reviews. Had what I needed. Home depot and miners both do not even carry the thing I was looking for. Parking is pretty scarce but they do have a lot across the street and some street parking. Not the easiest to maneuver around inside. A few times I had to wait for a person to come out of the aisle so that I would be able to walk down it. But that will not stop me from going there again. They carry high quality products that are hard to find and are always happy to special order anything they can for you. Their prices are surprisingly much lower on most everything than the box stores which is a real bonus too! Hewitts is a family owned and operated business and has the most incredibly helpful customer service I could hope for! In addition, when I call, they always pick up the phone and take care of me right away or they call me back promptly. No robots or answering machines. OK, so most people don't go to the hardware store for the atmosphere, but I love the charm of this store - you have to stop by to know what I'm talking about. The staff are friendly and helpful, too. My usual stop is for wood pellets that I use in my cat litter box, but I've stopped in looking for unusual items, and the staff always takes the time to listen to what I need, and help me find what works. Went to this hardware store because it is convenient and can go in with out the crowds. Called first to see if they make keys, yes they said. So off I go knowing well no one in this town, business's, wears masks! So I dawn my N95 Mask to make sure I don't die buying a key and low and behold no one working there wears a mask and they make my 2 master keys. I did bring the lock to test the keys but left it in the truck (duh). I shop for another item but they do not have it. They make my keys and i return home trying to use them on my lock. Nope, wrong key type, doesn't even look like the original. So, back to the town where no businesses wear a mask to get the right key, is it worth endangering my life over a key? read more

It's just fun for nostalgia. The older man at the register was very nice and talkative. I love the old wooden floors. Reminds me of the general store in ferndale near eureka. It is a great part of the experience of templeton and how it feels like an old west town. It's worth going into the store even if they are super small . Still a useful little hardware store. What I love about this place is that you get one on one service every time. I walk in and some one is usually right there to help me find what I need. They walk me to the right spot and help me pick out what I need. It is also surprising the selection they have in the small store. I have gotten irrigation supplies, pvc piping and connectors, bolt cutters, axes, shovels, spray paint, nuts, bolts, screws, paint brushes, vegetable plants and a bunch more. read more

Great small town hardware store. Almost like something out of the last Century. The staff is GREAT!!! You almost never need to find anything yourself. How can it be that a small place like this has more help on the floor than crappy Home Depot??? PRICES are exactly like any Ace Hardware store or OSH or HD....sometimes they are even cheaper! I went to Hewitt Hardware today while exploring Main Street in Templeton--working close by for a few months. Went up and down every aisle to see everything. I love hardware stores like this one. They have everything you need for raising chickens from babies--makes me wish I could get some. Thought there was nothing I needed but found an outdoor thermometer that I really do need.
