6/4-6/6/23: I needed to rent an SUV with Apple Carplay for work purposes. I was initially given a Ford Escape S (unknowingly, it did not have CarPlay). Fortunately, I only live 10 minutes away so I was able to test it at home to see if it had CarPlay and it did not. I immediately returned it to the LGB Hertz location without any hassle and got a 2023 Cadillac XT4 instead. Thank you to Matthew for ensuring the car had CarPlay. Matthew has great customer service and this location is lucky to have him. Super friendly. When I returned the Cadillac on Tuesday (6/4/23), he checked with me to ensure that I enjoyed the car. 6/11-6/13/23: I needed to rent an SUV with Apple Carplay for work purposes for another trip. Horrible horrible horrible experience here! Workers are super sneaky and try to up charge you for everything. They went as far as canceling my original reservation that was PAID IN FULL and charged me for an entirely new reservation. Once I called to figure things out, they dismissed everything I was saying and refused to issue me a refund + were being extremely rude. Renting a car at Long Beach Airport, California... I switched to Long Beach Airport (LGB) from Los Angeles Airport (LAX) because Hawaiian Airlines uses Tom Bradley Airport now. Uhg. It's VERY inconvenient to drag luggage from Tom Bradley to LAX and catch the shuttle to the Rental Car Company AND to haul luggage from LAX to Tom Bradley Airport to go home to Honolulu... Because the shuttle doesn't stop at Tom Bradley Airport! Arggg!!! Using the Autoslash website (as recommended by Dan O.), Hertz Rent A Car had the lowest price for a car for the weekend. Located in the small one-story building across the street from Long Beach Airport, service at Hertz Rent A Car was very friendly. The gal didn't push me hard to get insurance - and asked me why I was in Long Beach... long story... Haha! Anyway, walking in the dark (I arrived at 9pm) in the parking lot, looking for the numbers of the stalls on the ground was challenging - especially in the chilly May environment. (They said that the weekend was unusually cold.) I finally found the car and was surprised that it was a two-door, convertible Mustang! Wow! It had a lot of power - which I used at times on the long stretches of freeway (especially between Los Angeles and San Diego)! I had to get used to the push-button ignition and figure out how to open the gas tank... No other issues... Returning the car was okay. I just dropped the key off in the drawer at the kiosk in the parking lot. No one was working at 6am... That's alright. I was warned and instructed when I picked up the car! I was wrongly charged for mileage I didn't incur AND they never, ever picked up my numerous phone calls. I also should've checked Google Maps & Yelp reviews before booking, but now I know better. On Saturday, 12/14, I left the lot with 12,255 miles on the odometer, and returned it the same day at 4:02 PM with 12,276 miles on the odometer and a full gas tank. So just 21 miles that day. Per the car return instructions in the parking lot, I also took a photo that showed the odometer and time of return. This helped me out later. Later I received my email receipt, and it showed that the return was processed at 4:22PM with 12,365 miles on the odometer, so 89 miles over what I actually drove. I decided to wait until the next morning to let them know of their error, but then I was hit with a $29.38 gas refuel fee that seemed to be related to the wrong mileage and gave me more of a reason to call. The next morning, I called about 9 or 10 times with no luck. I called many times again a few hours later, and still no luck! I then decided to call another 4 or 5 times on Monday, and again NOTHING. For reference, I called the number listed on the listing, and pressed 3 twice to actually get past the automated message. You may need it for whatever reason, but it may also prove to be useless since they won't pick up. On Tuesday, I eventually emailed Hertz with a photo and explanation and they replied to me the following. They successfully refunded me, but I'm still annoyed and angry that I literally couldn't talk to anyone at LGB about this situation. If you need a car at LGB, choose literally any other rental service. I had a pretty good experience with Enterprise the last time, so I should've just chosen them again. read more

We needed a car to rent for our May 3 to 9, 2023 trip to the Los Angeles area. Initially, I booked with Avis, but after learning that they do not allow for additional drivers under the age of twenty-five, I cancelled our reservation and went with Hertz. With our AAA memberships, I was able to add a second driver younger than twenty-five at no charge. The Hertz Rent A Car located at LGB is conveniently situated across the street from the airport, adjacent to the covered parking lot...and when I say across the street, the rental car lot is literally separated from the front of the airport by a street. No shuttle bus needed to drive you to a location that is blocks away. Seriously, this place is just a hop, skip, and jump, less than a five minute walk from the airport entrance. On the date of our return flight to leave, we were running a bit late and, again, the location of this place was super convenient. Love it! I do wish that they would still use the indoor space in the building next door, especially if it rains. Maybe they do? Aside from mistakenly going to the small building where all of the other car rental companies reside at first, checking in to pick up our rental was pretty easy. Service was also friendly and helpful. In fact, the customer care person who checked us in gave us a AAA discount on the refuel charges, which was nearly 50% off. Our return was just as smooth and easy, but much quicker, taking about five to seven minutes altogether. Our automobile was a fairly new dark gray Ford Explorer, four door. The SUV was clean, easy to drive, and issue-free. The navigation system wasn't the best, though. A great experience we had. We will likely be back if flying in at LGB and needing a car again. read more

While my rental car was parked, someone backed into it and smacked one of the headlights out Instantly reported incident and asked for a replacement car so that I could go back to work, unfortunately they told me I would not be able to get one even though I payed the weekly fee for accidental repairs. They red flagged my account and was unable to rent from them. This put me back a week out of work, which was very stressful. Till today my account is red flagged which I'm glad they did. pros: *They have a good car selection *Prices are ok Cons: *They over charge on your bank accounts and credit cards by double charging your account. *I payed $380 they charged it twice to my credit card we lowering my actual credit by 43 points. *When an accident happens no they don't have you're back they just take your deposits and won't exchange the car as they tell you when signing the car insurance agreement. I had to rent from another company, which is way better for me personally since I haven't had any more problems with double charged accounts. I haven't had another accident but I've seen a few people exchange their cars after a finder binder so they made me feel more secure. I'm not saying don't rent from Hertz they're ok for most people but they do have a few issues that didn't work for me. read more

I've rented cars from Hertz at Long Beach Airport multiple times, and usually, things go smoothly. Unfortunately, my experience on May 25, 2025, left a lot to be desired--specifically during the return process. I returned my rental car after a weekend trip (May 23-25), and everything was fine until I pulled into the return zone. The employee on duty--who I later realized was responsible for returns--didn't look up, didn't greet me, and didn't offer a single word of guidance. He was busy chatting with a young woman nearby and seemed more interested in the conversation than doing his job. I parked the car where I thought it should go, got out, and walked over to the return counter. He still didn't acknowledge me. Moments later, another customer arrived after me, and this same employee immediately got up and helped them--completely ignoring the fact that I had been waiting, keys and receipt in hand. When I asked if this was where I was supposed to return the car, he said yes but claimed the other customer had been there first--which was absolutely not true. Even after I clarified, he refused to engage, so I left the keys on the desk, told him he should focus on doing his job instead of flirting, and walked away. His only response? "Have a good day," as he continued assisting the other customer. This level of service is unacceptable--especially from a company like Hertz. No acknowledgment, no professionalism, and a total disregard for the order in which customers arrived. I expect more from a brand I've trusted for years. If you're returning a car at LGB, don't expect help unless you're standing next to someone the staff wants to talk to. Really disappointing. I brought back our car with a full tank of gas. From the gas station to the lot was 3.9 miles, average MPG on the vehicle is 20 miles to the gallon. If I filled it to 100% full, and drove only 20% of a single gallon of gas to the lot, how is it that I was charged for bringing back a 93% full tank? Mathematically doesn't jive. Seems like someone is just stealing a couple bucks from customers for the sake of the company? Unsure, but then you can't even call and speak to anyone. Weird behavior from people who just need to verify the gas is full, not make up percentages and charge you. read more

No hassle rental in LGB The car rental place is conveniently located in the Long Beach Airport right outside the airport ticket lobby. Yay! because we didn't have to take any shuttle to take us offsite. There was no one in line when we arrived. After my hubby completed the check-in process with the rental agent we proceeded to head to the section to get the car. We had a few choices. The car was in good working order and we were on our merry way... easiest experience we've ever had, the agent was efficient, friendly, quick and courteous. We never had any issues with it. I booked a standard economy car as a President Circle member, and the rep at the counter notified me that there were no economy cars left. Due to the lack of availability on economy cars he then proceeded to "upgrade" me to a midsize car. Hertz repped then stated "we actually have a genesis special just for gold members" which I had opted for. At no point did Hertz mention it would be an additional fee for this, and to my surprise I was charged more for the actual upgrade than my initial rental rate ($78.80 for the rental, $90.34 for the upgrade). Evil and lazy company. Be prepared to have $230 stolen from you. And they'll block you after one call. Returned the car and the key to their booth after hours. Despite being by the airport, they don't always have employees working there and don't tell you ahead of time how to leave the key. We almost missed our flights. Weeks later we get a notification that they didn't get the key and charged us an additional $235.04. We call the hertz that we rented from. The woman operating kept talking over us for around 10 minutes. When we lost patience, we had to talk louder than her to be heard. And said can we explain our case to the manager then? The key was left where only employees could access, there's cameras all over the lot I'm sure, and why would we drop off the car and take the key with us. She didn't like that and hung up. Calling their customer service line, they'll say they'll give the local branch 24-48 hours to respond but after a month or we'd get that extra charge refunded. we heard nothing back after more than a month and spent another afternoon on the phone just to get the same results. Be sure to get a case number from these calls. After a month, calling back to the local hertz just leads to the laziest automated messaging system that will instantly hang up on you when you try to talk to an actual person despite being around 3pm their time on a Thursday. And choosing the proper departments just gives you the run around. I'm not sure if after that one call a month ago they put our entire families phone numbers on a list, or their automated call system is just absolutely broken. read more

From pickup to drop off, the team at this location was amazing! A 20-minute power outage during my pickup time could have turned ugly, but the team was calm and polite the entire time. A staff member must check your ID, hand you your rental agreement, and point out which car you have been assigned in their small parking lot. Solid three stars for the convenience of being able to pick up from Bay Area and drop off at LGB. Surprised at so many one-star ratings for customer service though! Looks like most were for their female employees. We fortunately had a pretty good experience with our encounter with a male employee. Very personable and efficient. First, it was disappointing that the Gold Member booth was not occupied upon our arrival. Would have loved faster service. We queued up inside with the one employee behind the Hertz counter moving the line along slowly. No point in Gold or honorable designation if it makes no difference in quality of service or privileges. I like to go where loyalty is appreciated, especially when the consumer has a plethora of options. What I do enjoy about the LGB location is that the car rental office is literally *right there* outside the airport ticket lobby. Easy to pick and return. This Hertz is a rip off. They will charge you for gas even when you return the car full. When you provide documentation of a full tank of gas (photos/receipts) they still refuse. Do not use this location. They rip you off. They never answer the phone to rectify the situation and when you go through hertz.com they refuse to correct the error as well. Do not use this Hertz. They will rip you off. When I disputed the charge with American Express Hertz lied and threatened collection. The response from Hertz is meaningless. Local management is the problem and non-responsive. What is the point of forwarding to local management when they refuse to correct their mistake and provide awful customer service? First of all... I was waiting in a line that was entirely too long with only 1 employee working the counter. I am a Gold member and no one was outside (dinner break maybe?). Got to the front of the counter and employee told me, "Oh, you need to go outside because the guys are back in the booth now." (Seriously? Two of them and both left at the same time with customers queued up to get cars?) It was quick and easy to pick up the keys outside... and get on my way after dodging all of the traffic cones and ignoring the directional arrows to find the exit. However...... I didn't notice that the tank was less 3/4 full until I was on the freeway about 5 miles away. I tried calling them for over 30 minutes only to have the phone ring forever and then just auto-disconnect me. I used two phones. Called from both simultaneously ... for over 30 minutes. I know there were 3 people there when I left. I guess none of them cared enough to (1) put gas in the vehicles, or (2) pick up the phone. I've now filed a formal request online at the Hertz website to hopefully not get charged when I return the car NOT full. Fingers crossed. Hertz, do better. You have a LOT of competition and you are NOT the best deal in the area. read more

I came here with a reservation booked through my credit card travel website. When I showed up they said my reservation had been canceled and that they didn't have a reservation under my name. I never canceled my reservation. I called my credit card customer service and they confirmed that my reservation was still active on their end. I don't know who messed up at Hertz and why my reservation wasn't found. It was frustrating and not a good start to my vacation. Instead I had to book a new reservation on the spot which was of course more expensive than when I originally booked it months prior. I went online to reserve my car and being a gold plus member helps. For some reason though, I thought I reserved my car last month, but then I should have checked my email to confirm. I was lucky and I was able to reserve a car without costing an arm and a leg and got a 7 day rental, Hyundai Sonata for $215 dollars including taxes which is not bad. The good news is the rent a cars is across the street from the airport, the confusing part is where to go. Since being a Gold Plus member, Hertz, tells you which car port to go to. But you have to go inside and check in and they will give you your keys. The good side is that they stop asking you if you want to add extra for insurance. The car itself was clean inside and ran smoothly. There were no problems on the long drives we did to Magic Mountain which was 120 mile round trip and gas cost us $45 dollars to fill up which is not too bad considering gas was $4.60 a gallon which is the most I have ever paid for gas. Return can be confusing as we thought we return the keys to the counter as what the sign says, but they came to us. Overall it was a good experience. read more

Some of the worst customer service from Maria. She lied to my wife about coverage and our fully pre paid rental was now up charged to almost $200. She failed to provide us with information about optional features and got herself a bonus by selling the add ons. When I called to discuss this issue and deny coverage she was combative and rude and would interrupt me everytime I tried to explain it was her responsibility to inform the customer of rental options. We will be denying these charges through our bank now as she was not up front not personable when o went to dispute the charges after only 1 mile of car use. Major price gouging! Our flight arrived late at Long Beach airport. All the rental car counters were closed...but Hertz was open, like sharks in the water. The Hertz agent said he could help me, since everyone else was gone. I said I was looking for a 14 day rental. He kept trying to upsell the extra insurance and pre-paid gas, even after I declined he kept telling me the 'advantages' and why they recommended it. He then proceeded to quote me $1,300! I said, 'No thanks, our rental was $621 for the same time period. We took a Lyft to our hotel for $27 and came back in the am to pick up our car from our original rental agency...now reduced to $407. I completely believe Hertz preys on travelers whose flights are delayed and Hertz believes are 'stuck' at the airport. Stay away they will rip you off! read more

DON'T FALL FOR THAT Pre-Paid Gas scam. Most cars they have are Hybrid using very little gasoline. Their vehicles uses a combination of battery and gas. So buying a $100 pre-paid fuel charge is ridiculous. Pre-paid means you use the vehicle and they re-fuel the gas tank when you bring the car back. We used the car for less than 2 gallons of gas, but dcould not get back one dime from then $100 deposit. Hertz is a scam car rental company. They run these 30% off ads noin stop but when you actually rent the car its more than rentng from any other car rental company. The staff is nice but outsie of that the place is wrong. Prepaid and rented a car thru Hertz plenty of times before but this time it was difficult. I presented an Older heavy set red haired woman who looked at my ID and decided that it wasn't valid Bc the edges of the corner were damaged. I explained to them what happened and she didn't have it and had the younger manager come out. This manager didn't even let me speak on the matter but just shut me down Bc I started getting upset...saying it was company policy not to take modified forms of ID. I asked to show me the policy and she just kept shutting me down. (How was I ever let into the plane on multiple TSA/airports if it wasn't valid?! They just wanted to give me a hard time Bc they were scared. They told me to go to one of the other car rental companies. Which I did..and they spoke to their mgmt and they gladly gave me a rental. At which, the lady smirked at me and went to the back. (It's always an older lady who couldn't quite get the promotion she had worked decades for that gives you the most hassle over everything). During COVID we have seen the companies that want to work with their customers to be helpful when they have had to cancel their plans due to exposures/illness. Hertz's cancellation policy is terrible and aims to squeeze their customers out of every dollar they have even when they have to cancel last minute due to the PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY. Unhelpful contact information and no response via email is the icing on the cake. read more
