I visit this Avis location at LGB quite frequently for business trips, almost once a month. 9 out of 10 visits are very smooth, and the remaining 1 time is usually due to larger crowd and wait time is longer than usual, which is expected, given that many Disneyland visitors fly here. I'd always recommend that book your reservation ahead of time. It'll save your money, time, and frustration. The staff at this location are friendly and knowledgable. I made a reservation with Avis at the Long Beach Airport location for a rental car from 2/24/25 to 2/26/25. The desk agent was wonderful. He was the only positive part of my experience. The rest of my experience was terrible. I was assigned a Mercedes SUV as part of my AARP upgrade, so I was stoked. I got to the car and did a walk around (as I usually do with rental cars). The fuel tank cover was completely missing. I pointed this out to an Avis agent in the parking area, and they said it was fine for me to drive. I took pictures on location before leaving. After the first day, I felt unsafe having the fuel tank cover missing, as the piece that was supposed to open the cover was jutting out of the car (see picture). I called the Avis office at the airport, but no one answered. I called Avis customer service, and after being on hold for an hour, they said I should keep the car and take pictures or return it for a replacement if I would like to. I was on a tightly scheduled business trip but decided to go back to the airport to request a new vehicle. There was no way I was going to keep driving in LA County with a piece of the car sticking out. The SUV was replaced with a Ford Mach-e, which I thought was pretty cool since it was my first electric car rental. However, the car was only charged to 72% when I received it, which was frustrating. I found out later that the A/C did not work, which surprised me because it was a fairly new car. In Southern California, even in February, not having A/C was an uncomfortable experience. This felt like the longest two-day rental ever. After coming back from my trip, I received a letter charging me $109 for the damaged fuel cap area. I had somewhat expected this given the whole experience, and I disputed the charge. The images that Avis attached to the charge showed a 23-mile discrepancy between the mileage of the car when I dropped it off (18334) and when they took the picture (18357). Even if I had damaged the cap (and I did not), this felt like salt in the wound. How can you charge me when 23 miles are unaccounted for? They put a stop payment order on the charge and said the matter was taken care of. Literally 2 hours later I received another charge letter in my email. I am not exaggerating, either. I got my stop payment confirmation at 5:20 PM and a new charge letter at 7:27 PM the same evening. This new charge was for $275. Unlike the first letter, this one contained no associated images of the damage they claimed I caused, so I had no idea what this was about. I only later learned that it was due to a scratch that was found on the inside of the Mercedes. I am 100% positive I did not scratch the interior. I did not even have the car a full day! I honestly feel like this letter was an attempt to have me pay for pre-existing damages that I was not responsible for, especially because there were no images as evidence and there was a mileage discrepancy. Avis customer service put a stop charge on this as well for all these reasons. After settling it, I asked the customer service agent if I could speak to a manager in order to voice my complaints. I was told that the issue was escalated and I would receive a call from a manager in 1-2 hours. It has been over 24 hours, and I have not received a call or literally any apology for the inconvenience, except for the desk agent at the airport (shoutout to that person, but I did not get his name). This is by far the worst experience I have ever had with a rental car. I did not expect this from an AARP partner and from such an established name in the business. I have never written a complaint like this before, but I feel I have no redress or voice in this situation. This two-day car rental has been haunting me for weeks now. Before the rental, I was planning on booking with Avis again for an upcoming trip to Wisconsin, but I cannot imagine putting myself through this mess again. Renting a vehicle at Long Beach Airport, California... At first, I was really happy with AVIS Rental Car Company because they offered me a 35 percent off discount on my next visit. I booked a car with this super good rate... only to be VERY disappointed... On 11-2-23 at around 10:10pm, I entered the small building across the street from Baggage Claim at Long Beach Airport. This Rental Car Center is shared by companies such as Alamo, National, Budget, and Hertz. There was no one at the AVIS counter. The customer in the Hertz line said that she had reservations at AVIS for 9:45pm. She arrived at 10:05pm - and the employee had left at 10pm sharp. We were in the same boat. Our Hawaiian Airlines flight had been delayed due to poor weather conditions. It wasn't our fault. Luckily, Hertz had some available vehicles. Alamo and National didn't have anything. After I secured a vehicle at Hertz, I called AVIS to find out what could be done. The woman on the phone said that I could pick up a car from AVIS within 24 hours. Um... I already have a car from a different company. She offered to change the date for the next time I needed a car. I wanted to keep the same 35 percent off deal, so - for $20 more, I can use my reservations in January 2024 when I return to Long Beach Airport. I don't think I should have to pay the extra $20. Do not get scammed like us, avoid this Avis if you have options! Was charged a very large cleaning fee after 3 day rental. Car wasn't clean when we picked it up, pictures we were shown as evidence of dirt should have been embarrassing for them (some white specs on a black removable mat shown below), and their rationale was 'excessive sand' despite us not going to the beach. Following up with credit card company and small claims court now because we are offended but experience wasn't great despite this charge either. Car smelled like cigarettes when we picked it up and hadn't been vacuumed to begin with but we were too tired after travel to turn around and get a new vehicle. So I rented a car at Avis Long Beach airport , customer service was good but took down email wrong so I never got a confirmation or agreement paperwork, no problem. Running late to an appointment and few hours drive. When I returned car , the guy who took my rental back was super cool and away went since it was my day off. Since I didn't get a copy of my agreement , tried calling the LB airport Avis, no answer, I mean I call all day, I worked in. Call center I got time to call, all day and into the evening. Called their central customer service and they were no help, they kept asking for a reservation number which I told them there wasn't any because I didn't reserve it , they couldn't look it up because there was no reservation, they said to call, well I've been calling and no answer, so since the hours say they are open at 6 am, here I go at 6 am to get a copy since no one answered , customer service Couldn't help ....wait they don't open until 7am. Worst experience. Have been Avis preferred member, but no longer. Rented a vehicle while on vacation. After 20 minutes, the car started rattling every time I turn the wheel or pressed on the break. Pulled over close to the hotel to see if it was a flat. Tires were fine, but on the back of the window, it was written "Breaks don't work" in chalk. I tried calling Avis and they would not answer the phone for 24 hours. I contacted customer service and to my surprise, very unsympathetic to the issue. They rented me a car, knowing the brakes didn't work. To add insult to injury, all they did was offer me a 40% discount. They will be hearing a lot more from me regarding this issue. read more

When I come to Long Beach for a two day get away, I spent an hour waiting for a car to arrive. If I could give this Avis zero stars, I would. AVOID THIS AVIS AT ALL COSTS. We rented a suburban for a week and when we went to pick up our vehicle, they escorted us to a suburban where the exterior was filthy. It looked like someone had wrote in market on the windows, and instead of cleaning it off, someone wiped off the marker with their hand which was on multiple windows. I went back to the front desk asking to run it through the car wash again. When the car was brought back to us, the guy said it was the "type of marker" and could not get it off. Tired from traveling, we took the car and went on our way. Upon further inspection, the interior was not cleaned. There was minimal vacuuming effort, dirt and marks all over the interior, and left over trash. Once at our destination, I had to clean the entire interior of the car myself, and it isn't a small car, it was a large suburban. On top of that, the gas was not filled all the way up, luckily we took a picture. When I returned the car, I told the lady checking us in about the gas and showed her the picture that the gas wasn't filled up fully when we picked it up, so I filled it up to the same amount. She made me go to the front desk and argue with them because she was going to charge me $115 for not filling the tank to the full line. A week later we get charged a very LARGE cleaning fee. Mind you, the car wasn't even clean when we picked it up. Their rationale was "dog hair" of which we tried our best to clean out already. But $450 to vacuum dog hair for 5 minutes is OUTRAGEOUS, especially when the car wasn't even clean when we picked it up. Is car cleaning already not a given when a car is returned any way? Seem silly to charge me that amount of money and still give out dirty cars. I will never be renting from AVIS or an affiliated company ever again and I hope you will learn from my mistakes. read more

Something I learned speaking to customer service. They MUST honor your rental rate even if they don't have the car. They cannot charge your for an upgrade if it's the only car they have. An electric vehicle is not part of the economy group. I came in to pick up a Kia Rio or something similar and was given a fully electric EV. I was told it's a vehicle included in the economy package. I was told if I didn't want it, I had to pay $50 a day extra for an upgrade. I was desperate so I took it. Tensions were high at the airport as other people were upset about their reservation so I just paid and left. I even dropped it off a day early to save some money...I didn't save much as the upgrade was hidden under "optional services" customer service was very nice and informed me of their policies and issued me a refund. read more

On 5/17/2021 an accident occurred with the AVIS vehicle I rented. The driver side window exploded, sending glass shards all over. Some of the shards nicked me in several areas of my body, luckily they didn't go into my eye. I've filed an police report on this incident, and as far as I know there were no physical force that made the window shatter like that. There were no car beside me (exiting on single lane), no one was throwing anything at me as far as I can tell. The worst customer service ever. I was meeting a concierge to pick up my car it just purchased to ha e it serviced. My rental was prepaid but when I arrived it wasn't ready. After waiting an hour the gentleman explained he had to leave. He left me and my packages in the waiting area. After being at Avis for over an hour they came out and said the c tract I signed is different. That the car needed an II change. They gave e a new contract to a sub that was so filthy on the inside and out. I asked the gentleman who rented it if they clean it being Corona virus and all! He sent a man out he said I am off all I could do is send it to the back! I called the 800 number for customer service who informed me all he could d was cancel the reservation if I wanted him to and refund the money. He also informed me to speak to the Westin in charge. I think it's easy to take rental car companies for granted, to slip by without a positive remark when things actually go well. Normally I wouldn't review "chains," but I think anything travel-related is worth commenting on. LGB is one of my favorite airports. The experience is always seamless. There's only 10 gates, a limited number of eateries, and a condensed layout that makes rental car pickup easy. All companies are located in one bungalow, and all cars are in the same lot. The Avis guy that helped me was super friendly, in a genuine way. I'm not sure why rental car people always ask what you're in town for... some security question or small talk? Either way, this gentleman was a people-person, which I appreciate. Sometimes it seems like I'm asked, but no one cares about the answer. Then don't ask! Returning the car was quick and easy, too. The staff at the Avis tent was accommodating and greeted me with smiles before I headed off to my flight. The car (some kind of Kia) was also pretty sweet. The people were nice enough, but the cars are pretty crummy. The first car they assigned me, I drove off the lot and the engine was buzzing! I'm going to have the rental for a week, and I don't want to go insane, not to mention break down somewhere, so I went back and had them change out the car. The next car runs, but it smells bad (so bad I bought an air freshener), the seats are stained, there's sticky juice spills, and it's just generally old and run down. This Avis is a nightmare. LGB is one of the best airports in Cali but this rental lot is the absolute worst. I booked a car for one day for personal use and ended up canceling because I got so frustrated. Fast forward to August 2023 I have to get a rental for business use for 3 days and of course Avis is preferred by my company. I generally have no issues with Avis, they're always fantastic at every other airport. This one, there's no preferred access, if you're a preferred member you can't just go straight to the car you have to wait in line for keys. The first car was a Camry with a TON of damage. I recorded the damage on my phone and then realized I couldn't get my phone connected, so I asked for a new vehicle primarily because of the damage, but also because I couldn't get connected. The guy gives me another Camry thankfully with no damage. Once I get in the car I quickly realize that I was using the wrong USB port, my bad. But the guy was right on my heels to plug his phone in the other vehicle to tell me it was working. Ok that's great my man, but I still wasn't driving a badly damaged car off the lot. Anyway, no issues with the car overall, I get my 3 days of use for work, go to the gas station to fill it up and immediately get a warning that maintenance was required. I go to return the car and the person in tbe lot said her scanner didn't work so I had to haul all my stuff back into their office trailer to turn in the keys. They didn't even check the car. This place is poorly managed and poorly run, and the cars are in rough shape. I hope they check that vehicle so someone else doesn't get screwed with maintenance warnings. read more

We went to the Long Beach Airport to see if anyone might have a rental available last minute and we were relieved after talking to Kameron with Avis. I understand that it is all written somewhere in the contract but it would be nice for them to go over all of the requirements and details of the rental contract. You will definitely want to avoid calling their customer service, you can't understand a word any of them say. If you're flying into Long Beach Airport at night, do NOT remt from Avis. Our flight got delayed and upon arriving ar Avis at 10:05 pm, the workers had left because they closed at 10:00 pm. I wasn't the only one who had a reservation that was left hanging. Went over to Alaamo / National and was able to get a car there. The workers there said they were finished work at 9:30 pm but because rhe flight was delayed, they stuck around to ensure they could fulfill the reservations. What a difference in customer service.
