Our stay at the Heron House started off poorly and was down hill from there. We walked into the office passing a person sitting on the porch. Not a word was said to us ( no hello or welcome) and after we got inside he decided come in (that was the front desk person). The place needs a lot of fixing up. 3 out of the 4 blinds were broken. The closet fixture light didn't work. The outlet next to the bed was not screwed into the electrical box and had no outlet cover. The room was very dark due to insufficient lighting. Their attentiveness to housekeeping was horrible. I needed extra towels so I called the front desk ( after seeing him enter the office from my window). No answer and got voicemail, no reply to our request. Finally asked him in person and finally got my towels after day 3, but old towels were not removed nor was the room serviced. I felt like I wasn't welcomed and the staff was not happy. Would NOT recommend! read more

We only stayed one night here because our original hotel was full the day that we arrived, but we had a decent stay. The room was a little small, and had a tiny shower but it had great water pressure, so it made up for its size! The bed was not very comfortable, and we did not sleep well even though we were exhausted from traveling all day. The inside of the room could use a bit of updating but overall it was a fine experience (our second hotel was definitely an improvement than our one night stay here). Patrick checked us in and my fiancé asked if there was sparkling champagne in the room because he talked to Lewis when booking and he said there would be. Patrick said "I don't know but here's some cheap wine", and handed us the bottle. Not a great first Impression. The bathroom shower was way too small and it dripped constantly getting the floor and the bathmat soaking wet. Shower curtain was way too short and water went on the floor while showering. Bathroom floor was gross and the grout was really dirty, bad lighting and toilet paper very thin . Pillows were lumpy and sheets smelled musty, mattress was fairly comfortable. Blind on window too small with a 3 inch gap on one side. We were told room 1 is an upgrade. Nope. It is not. Everything in there needs replaced. Breakfast coffee was great, flavored water was a nice touch and the bagels were fresh. The fruit was tasteless and where you get your breakfast was creepy. Overall, we gave it 2 stars. this place is so conveniently located to everything and takes advantage of that feature and over charges. We wouldn't recommend and won't stay here again. read more

We were so happy with our stay here-- set in a charming old house turned hotel, they kept some of that old Florida house charm in the decorating. While some of the decor feels a bit outdated, everything was clean and COMFY! We loved the private patio out back, with its tall fence (no staring your neighbours down while you sit out!). Loved that every room opened up onto the pool in the courtyard. The hotel is rather small, so it felt very homey, and everyone was friendly. The location was fabulous -- just a block over from Duval Street, you can walk literally everywhere in minutes (or bike, which we did, and they had a secure area with bike racks to store overnight). Breakfast was included, although we slept in and did not make it there in time, so I don't know how that was. The ONLY complaint I have is the parking situation: there is no dedicated parking for this hotel, just on-street parking wherever you can find it. Some is paid parking, some is free, so YMMV. We found a spot a couple of blocks away that did not cost, and left our vehicle there the entire time we were in town. The resident kitties in the courtyard are a definite bonus :-) We were happy and will be back to stay here again when we come back to town! read more

It a homey resort, small and personal. It's SUPER convenient to stay here since it's just a street away from Duval street. It's literally walking distance from everything!!! We had a great stay and Visit to Key West. I recommend staying here because he location is just one short block from Duval street where there is plenty of shopping, bars and restaurants. Some reviews mention the breakfast as a negative. My guess is management listened because the breakfast options were plentiful and staff hosting were super friendly. The options ranged from eggs and cheese, scrambled eggs, sausage, muffins, toast, croissants, fresh fruit, oatmeal, cereal, milk, juices, and a coffee bar. All the PRO's Convenient to Duval street Charming and super quiet Staff was friendly at check in and at breakfast. Decorated cute and super clean Parking can be found as close as a block away for free Walking distance to everything Breakfast was over the top good. The Heron House was a pleasant surprise. Very charming old house turned hotel a block from Duval Street and only a few blocks to Mallory Squaer. The location is great. No dedicated parking so you have to pay for parking on the street (and find a spot). Rooms are a little bit outdated but a tasteful island decor, king size bed and pillows comfy. Each room has its own porch area with rockers. Our second room was in the front of the house so it had a huge private balcony. They had a decent pool but we did not have time to use it. Continental breakfast was served but unfortunately we didn't get down there till 10 AM and everything was gone. There was a little bit of coffee left but the gentleman cleaning up told my husband he only had two creamers and did not offer to go get more from the kitchen so we passed on the coffee. The only other disappointing thing was that there was no soap for the bathroom sink, although they did have shampoo and liquid soap hanging in the shower. So to wash your hands you had to go to the tub and squirt some liquid soap in your hand and then back to the sink. Other than those two small Issues the stay was absolutely great and the price for the hotel was much more reasonable than others in the area. Given its location and the cleanliness of the hotel I would definitely stay there again. read more

We stayed at the Heron House From Dec. 3rd through the 6th. It was a last minute booking do to a change in plans. We stayed in room 44. The room was small but clean. The bed was fine. The bathroom could use an update. If you want something near Duval St. this place works. Now for the bad. We had no hot water at the sink in the bathroom. I mentioned this to the staff several times but nothing was done about it. They offer a continental type breakfast, but that's not till 8:00 am. So if you're an early riser there's no coffee till than. We had to leave the hotel and fine a place for coffee in the morning. I would suggest they put coffee makers in the rooms or at least have coffee ready before 8:00 am. Would I stay there again? Not sure. read more

These cottages are wonderful. My wife and I needed a safe getaway during this hell of a year dealing with Covid. Key West was an obvious choice. Beautiful and not too much traveling since we are coming from Miami. The Heron was a great price, beautiful pool, fantastic bed and the location was walking distance to everything. They were so welcoming. I loved how vocal and communicative they were with their Covid-19 preparations and regulations. They even had an onsite cat. I missed my pets so much that I needed to see that kitty. Expect to pay for parking. About $40/day but that's standard KW. Most hotels don't offer parking. There's plenty of street parking in front. The front desk woman was so helpful. I bothered her a lot and she always seemed how to point me in the right direction. I wish i remembered her name. We will be back. read more

We had this event happen in south west Florida this week...actually in all of Florida... Hurricane Ian..not sure if you hear about it. Apparently Heron house has not heard of it. Planned this trip two months ago, but then the hurricane occurred...all segments of the trip including other motel stays, ferry ride to Key West etc have been cancelled by the vendors. When I called Heron House, the assistant manager said basically, "tough". They are keeping my 185 bucks! Anyhow, if you are planninga trip to the area, be aware. This hotel is pretty heartless. I saw the reviews after we checked in and was skeptical as the entrance was cute and tropical, and Andy (front desk) was phenomenal. His customer service was beyond reproach. It kind of went downhill from there. We have stayed at numerous properties in Key West before and this was the worst. Not that the hotel was extremely disgusting but to say this was a 4 or 5 star hotel as some reviews show is going way overboard. Another reviewer commented on the algae in the pool which I didn't believe but YES, there is algae in between the tile and one end of the pool had a lot of black gunk at the bottom. When we checked out I told the receptionist that they needed to clean out the algae and he said, "Yes, we do" and kept on working. The rooms are in need no desperate remodel. We had one of the most expensive suites and we were stuck with an old bulky tv with a non-functioning remote. The air conditioner was extremely loud, which I liked, but I could not hear my husband talking to me 10 feet from him. We had a balcony but could not sit on one of the seats because the a/c dripped. They had this rigged to where the overflow would drop into pvc pipe but the pipe dripped as well. I won't go on and on but I'll just say that we will not be going back to the Heron House. On a positive note, there was free breakfast. Not the best I've ever had but honeydew and cantaloupe with a side of granola was all I could have as a vegan. My friends were not impressed with the eggs nor any of the others dishes. Lastly, since this was my honeymoon I expected a lot more than we got so sufficed to say I was disappointed. Last positive note: the hotel is located in a perfect location, one street from Duval. So If you don't care about sleeping in a loud room with a hard mattress and an algae ridden pool then stay here. As for me there are a lot cheaper hotels with better amenities in the area that we will look into in the future. read more

Was on the fence about staying in a bnb but so glad we did it! This was such a cute place to stay! In key west you either stay at a bnb and have everyhting at walking distance or at a commercial hotel and have to uber to duval etc. The good: -very central location, everything important within walking distance. -Our room was clean, smelled great, and was very specious and comfortable. They even accommodated our early check-in. -The staff we interacted with were very pleasant and nice. -Breakfast was promptly out at 7:50am, waffles, bagels, homemade jam, toast, yogurt, cereals, milk, orange juice were the options. The bed was a bit hard/springy but i slept well. -A/C worked great and kept the room cold at all times. The covers are not very breathable so i woke up sweating if covered and freezing if uncovered lol. Ill bring my own next time. Rates are about 200 for a regular queen room and 250 for a king suite. We got a junior king suit room #46 for 250 after fees and taxes. -We had a small shared balcony which was nice. Pool was unfortunately so warm but cant blame anything other than the insane hot weather for that. -We enjoyed a swim in the afternoon and were happy to see they had orange infused water and lemonade available outside by the pool. So refreshing! A few cons: -The shower was difficult to operate with very wonky handles leaving us with either boiling water or freezing water but eventually we were both able to take a hot shower after tinkering with them. -We had 2 fans above our bed, only 1 worked. -They are extremely difficult to reach over the phone (i called from 630am-1030am not one time did anyone answer the phone, when i arrived i saw the phone ring several times and it was not answered) i like to be able to communicate with the hotel im staying in so that was a very unpleasant aspect. -bed was hard and springy as i stated before. -parking is a hassle, when i spoke to them days prior they made it seem like parking would be very easy, it wasnt. Free parking is scattered around but you have to keep an eye out and drive around to find, whats readily available is parking at $4 an hour and the pay by day parking areas are very far. Luckily after driving around for 45 min we got a great free spot about 4 blocks from the hotel. Of course drop of your luggage in the lobby before parking. All in all in if your not expecting a hilton 5 star stay you will love it, its not perfect but for what the options are in key west this is a great option. It was clean and we will come back again. read more

would love to give Heron House a 5 Start Review but they need a little love ... PROS: Great staff. Greeted with smiles and we were allowed to check-in early. Great location. Loved how close to Duval we were and to all the other amazing sites in KW. Beautiful property. Nice size rooms. CONS: The room we stayed in (5) was a nice size but pretty dirty. The floors needed to be mopped, the fans and lights were covered in dust and the bathroom was dirty. Housekeeping did not come once, we stayed for 4 days. The continental breakfast was pretty much carbs. Definitely needs a bit of an upgrade in comparison to most BNBs in KW. The do not offer water free to guests throughout the day/night. No water cooler or fountain on property. Lastly, It is not easy to reach the front desk at all times. After we left, I realized I left an item in the room. I called and asked them to mail it to which they said they would and have yet to do so, a month later. I am sure we will give the Heron House another try, hopefully we just had an off room/stay. read more

I was so disappointed. We could not get our tv to work, went to the front desk and the attendant was very rude. Explained that tv was not working and his response was- " why do you need a tv, your in Key West". Grudgingly he followed to our room. Entered and said to my spouse " your in Key West you do not need a tv". Beyond surprised, but replied I liked to watch the news at night. The one lamp in on the night stand didn't work when we came in that night- had to leave bathroom light on to see. Vanity sink in room had a bar of soap, nothing in the shower. We stayed here for two nights. Booked through Travelocity. The location is great. The street noise is horrible. We stayed here in September and we both could never get the room cool enough to make us happy. The mattress is the worst we have ever had in any hotel we have ever stayed in anywhere and we travel quite a bit. The bedding and pillows are cheap as well. We've stayed in hotels & resorts from coast to coast & now, our full time jobs are hospitality. We understand reviews help us all make informed decisions on how to use our hard earned money, on much needed vacations, is key. On our many visits to Key West, we've stayed in an assortment of hotels, but found this one to be the worst to date. Let me name the pros and cons & thoughts on acceptance of diversity, after all, this is Key West in 2021. Pros: location. Not far from Duval, made this easily accessible. Foliage was beautiful Cons: I've not had a worse night sleep in 30 years. Please see my photo of the mattress. From the stained yellow sheets, to the 7 inch, 20 year old coil mattress, to the flat & hard pillows, it was evident that the owner cared more about pocketing the money than reinvesting in their guests. Cleanliness: The floor was so filthy, we had to keep a towel at our bedside to clean off. The dust was atrocious. The headboard was on the floor and leaning on the frame. The mattress didn't have a mattress cover to protect it, leaving it prone to bug infestation brought in from travelers. Gross. The toilet had hair smeared on it and toothpaste splatters all over the mirror. This room was NOT clean. I'll leave my opinions on the lack of maintenance occurring aside, but the exterior lighting being out on steep stairs was a considerable safety hazard. Catering to a considerable older generation, left a sour palate for diversity acceptance. To further our bad experience, we moved the extremely small tv forward to the foot of the bed on our first night to just see it, look at the picture of how small it is to understand why. I posted a picture of us on my FB page, thinking it was funny, and dearly paid for it by an extremely intrusive visit by staff while we were gone. There were also no cups in the room, so my husband took our portable wine opener and sawed my water bottle in half to enjoy a cocktail. Coming back after a long day away, we found our door unlocked and the tv moved back. We had left cash, credit cards, jewelry and personal items out, trusting we were safe. I was Mortified. My husband went straight to the staff and asked why the intrusion and was told the owner was "up in arms" that we moved the tv and ordered them to move it back. I then found a response on my personal Facebook page from the owner asking that we take care of her room??? And that staff would be up immediately to straighten it? They left my door unlocked, subject to thousands being lost, and while the property has a locking front gate, it was left open the entire previous day. This intrusion leaves them open to a lawsuit. They should have called or texted. Their rebuttal was that it's safer than Miami. I'm not sure how they arrived at that logic being an appropriate response. Being vacation rental owners ourselves, we have more than 400 5 star reviews, so caring for anyone's property is not lost on me. There are so many wonderful properties to choose from in Key West, chose one that cares for their guests, their comfort and their safety. read more

The only thing we enjoyed about our stay was how close this was to everything. On-line website says they close at 7pm, nope they left at 5. Left a note on the front door with directions to our room. It really doesn't take along time to make a quick call to go over everything instead we had to figure it all out. The bed was nothing but springs and flat ass pillows. I had better pillows and beds while recovering from surgery at the hospital. The toilet kept clogging, toilet was wobbly, the fan was dusty, the blower dryer cord was covered in dust, the door from the bathroom to bedroom was also dusty, and the remotes were dirty. The paint job in the room could use some help as well, from the walls to the ceiling, not sure who painted it but I would have someone else paint it next time. There was no place for us to hang anything up, no hooks or hangers. The bed was so high so couldn't watch TV while laying in bed. The TV should have been up on the wall so that we would be able to see it plus we would have had somewhere to put our stuff. I am sure its not to hard to buy new pillows, mattress pad topper if you can't afford to buy new mattress. Little more attention to detailing when cleaning would have been nice. read more

Great price and location. Pretty grounds. Nice space under cover to read or have a drink. Needs some work. No hot water one morning and maintenance came and was rude. Said I didn't know how to work shower and must not have let water run. It went cold during the shower. He said he tried sink at it was fine. Two days later I overheard a staff telling someone to run the hot water faucet on sink to get hot water pulled into the shower. The next time I didn't have hot water in the shower I jumped out of the shower and ran sink faucet and it came back. Would have been helpful to be told that up front. The mattress was very uncomfortable, it was thin and the bed was a platform so it felt like sleeping on a futon. Linens are poor quality. Pillows are very thin. Toiletries are low quality. Bring your own. Fine for a night or two but not for a longer stay. For me there were too many corners cut. Key West is expensive and it's great there is a low cost option in town but for me I'd rather pay more for better quality items that impact comfort or stay further out. Lesson learned. read more

Pretty hotel. The rooms around the pool look beautiful. Fresh towels daily but no one ever swept the floor. Supposed to be breakfast daily, but it doesn't start til 8 and I could never find anyone to make it around. The bed was terrible old overused mattress and old uncomfortable pillows. No staff at night. That means that patrons are allowed to be as ignorant as they want. Loud shouting, 3 am swimming, midnight party's with loudmouths. No where to park if you rent anything. our 2 night stay was fine at the hotel however we found a $700 charge on our credit card after we paid our total of $900 for the rooms. we immediately called and it's almost impossible to speak to anyone. messages were left and when we got a call back the person was useless. then 5 days later we got another $900 charge. It is difficult to get someone to answer the phone or even a call back when leaving a message in the weeks prior to our arrival. Check-in was smooth. All requests made prior to check-in were met with the exception of a large tub in the room. The front desk was very helpful and polite when I had a minor medical issue to deal with. I did notice small bugs crawling around, that looked like gnats, in our room. I also killed a small cockroach. A friend of mine in another room, was refunded her service charge fee, because the floors were dirty and room smelled of mildew, we assumed, from the a/c. Aside from the bugs seen, we had no complaints of the cleanliness of our room. The walls/ceiling are thin. We could easily hear noise from outside and the people in the room above us sounded like they were river dancing. At the end of the day, because of the excellent hospitality during our stay and location for the price, we would stay again, if guaranteed a room on the second floor. read more

The room we got (#1) was cozy and quaint. The shower was small but gets the job done. There wasn't any WiFi in the room I was in, but I was told WiFi was strong around the breakfast area. The breakfast was meterocre at best. The bagels and crossiants were doughy and chewy. I enjoyed the juices, teas and coffees offered. The pool was small, but because the bed and breakfast is very small and private, the pool was fine. During our stay, one of the light bulbs went out and we promptly told the main desk. However, they never replaced the light bulb during our stay (3 nights and the light went out the first night). They claimed they sent someone but we doubt them because the only time they came was 5 am (and of course we were asleep and with the deadbolt on). Who comes at 5am to change a lightbulb???? Regardless, this is a great location and it's so close to Duval! We were walking distance to everything. I love how we don't have to listen to Duval's noises despite how close we are to them. This is the sole reason why I am giving this hotel a 4/5 stars. If it weren't for the location, it would have been a 3/5 stars. read more
