Ordered the guac- tasted store bought and dressed up with pickled onions and diced pico de gallo Ordered the shrimp ceviche - it barely had any shrimp and had zucchini which is not a veggie commonly found in ceviche. The flavor profile was off. Ordered the octopus tacos - I only tasted the char on the octopus and the texture was off. Ordered the mushroom queso fundido- that was okay. Ordered the calamari- the breading was coming off the calamari and not fried well. The sauces that accompanied it were delicious though! My mezcal Paloma was delicious. The carajillo was also delicious. Our server, Carter, was super nice and service was great. The ambiance is beautiful- love the seating and vibe. Edited to add: I think the server picked up on our disappointment on the dishes and made it right and it was reflected on the check. That's really great. Hermanito is beautiful. The decor has a nice warm brown tone that pairs well with its bar area. My group arrived around 11:40- very close to opening, and there were very little customers in the building. The servers were very kind and thorough when serving us. My biggest issue with the restaurant is the food. I ordered the taco plate which includes a small bowl of soup, a little salad, rice with beans, and 2 tacos. The soup was fine- it had a decent amount of juicy pieces of chicken thigh meat. Unfortunately, the side salad was extremely over powering. It was so sour and salty that I was visibly puckering my lips and closing my eyes while my peers were talking to me. I asked the servers what the dressing was and they said it was supposed to be a light lime vinaigrette. When I told them it was very strong they offered to bring me the greens without the dressing but I declined because I was already getting full. Meanwhile, the rice, beans, and steak tacos were VERY bland. The quality of the steak was good, but there was no seasoning- I tasted the char more than the meat itself! Hermanito would benefit from re-evaluating their flavors and seasoning. Lastly, it is important to note that the dishes here are quite expensive! I really love how diverse the options are, if you want tacos you got it, if you want some oysters you got it, or if you're feeling like treating yourself they have some solid entrees! Not to mention their drinks are delicious! Hermanito is a top 10 restaurant to me on the westside. One of my favorite things in their menu is their Birria tacos with the consomé on the side. I don't do a lot of reviews but when I like a place I can't help it! Came in hungry sat right at the bar top (one of my favorite things to do) and the friendly bartenders asked me right away what I was looking for. He gave me food and drink and recommendations. I went with the recommendations and it did not disappoint. Great artisanal 100% agave tequila selection! I got a traditional simple margarita, it was perfect and having a great tequila makes it even better. This is my second time here and I really like it. Unfortunately I unknowingly made reservations the same day as their 1-year celebration and although our reservations were for 5:30, we didn't get seated till 6:15 ish. We missed happy hour and wasn't even offered it even though we specifically reserved for a time that was during HH. it wasn't our fault we got seated after the fact. Knowing it was their one year celebration, they shouldn't have taken reservations. Or atleast blocked off dedicated tables to honor those reservations. It was also a little rude to hear the owners letting their friends get seated faster even though there was a long line of guests waiting. We saw other tables that got seated & ordered after us get their entire meals long time before we got any of our dishes. Food was okay. The sauce they drenched my dish taco in made my other tacos soggy. Also they put the radishes near the seaweed for the hand rolls so that got soggy too. The tables were small and our server literally looked at our stack of plates maybe 3 different times and never bothered to clear it. When they brought out the hand rolls, we had to wait again to flag someone down for soy sauce. Not once did anyone ask how everything was or if we needed anything and it was incredibly difficult to get anyone's attention. It def slowed down towards the end of the meal because I saw empty tables but it took forever for us to get our check. Also with the hand held devices for closing out, why is tip starting at 20%? What happened to 15%, 18% & 20%? So disappointing because I was so excited to try out this spot for my friends bday but it was such a let down and disappointment. Will not be back. read more

Loooooved it! Gorgeous inside. They did a great job on this new restaurant in an old Santa Monica institution. Even kept the little circle window! Went for happy hour. I just had a very negative experience. Bartenders were totally rude and completely destroyed the vibe. I was ready for a nice dinner at the bar. I sat down and got ignored for 10 minutes at a not very busy bar at all. One of the bartenders even watched me come in and sit down and just kept walking back-and-forth without ever acknowledging me or asking me what I would like to drink or eat. Was going to Bodega Nextdoor but saw this spot which has turned over many times, wanted to check it out. We were drawn in by "taco Tuesday". Here's the issue. You can purchase a cocktail drink and get a "free" taco or one for a few dollars but then the other tacos are full price. We each ordered a free carnitas taco they were good except came with pork rinds. I wanted another taco but then I'd need to order a full plate for $24. So I didn't order anything. Here's a Business idea for a not full restaurant on taco Tuesday offer $5 single tacos after the initial drink / taco special. People will probably order more tacos and another drink. Beachy, trendy (but not overly trendy) spot that opened up on Broadway not too long ago. Perfect for a lowkey date night. Mezcal margs were on point, guac was fresh, and the tacos were tasty. The spicy fish tacos lived up to their namesake (they definitely had a kick) but the birria was the standout. My wife loved the octopus tacos. Service was a massive highlight, Carter did a really great job making recommendations and walking us through the menu. Excited to go back and try the Pork Katsu + Hangar Steak tacos. Also appreciate that they're open until 1 AM on weekends--SM needs more quality nightlife! read more

We popped in on a Sunday night. What a stylish, hip interior. It's a bit dark inside so it's tough to read menus or fully take in the food. Immediately the bartender directed us to seating and quickly took our orders. I LOVED the Paloma cocktail I had-super fresh tasting juice and well-balanced. Great guacamole and perfectly salty and crispy chips. I thought the grilled shrimp taco was a bit one note with char flavor, but it was also a delicious tortilla and had a nice amount of greenery topping it. My hubs really liked the carnitas taco. We truly couldn't have had a better experience. The food, decor and cocktails were incredible, and the menu is the perfect mix of my favorite cuisines. But what really stood out was the hospitality. We were celebrating our Anniversary and Valentine's Day, and I had arranged to have flowers delivered to the restaurant earlier in the day so they'd be waiting on the table as a surprise for my wife. The staff was kind enough to accommodate the request and have them set up before we arrived. Unfortunately, the delivery driver accidentally dropped the flowers off at the other Hermanito location on Sawtelle! I assumed the surprise was ruined. Then the hostess came up to me and said, "Don't worry... our manager is driving over there now to pick them up and bring them back." I couldn't believe it. Sure enough, just as I was finishing my first Japanese Old Fashioned, Gilbert (the manager) walked in with the bouquet and completely surprised my wife. Absolute save. Huge thanks to Gilbert and the entire staff for going above and beyond to make the night so special. (I wish I remembered the names of our wonderful server and the incredible hostess who helped coordinate everything!) Thank you both too. As for the food: the Oaxacan Queso Fundido, Bao Buns and Pork Cutlet were five stars. We'll definitely be back to explore more of the raw bar and tacos. The menu is huge and I want to try it all. Dined in last night and unfortunately it was not their best work. I'm a big fan of the Sawtelle location and I don't think this second location really stands up to the name. Lobster ceviche was chewy and fishy -- not a good look for a $27 appetizer. Salmon tacos were SO SMALL. I order the salmon tacos every time I dine at Hermanito and am always impressed by the large filets of fresh salmon...last night I got maybe 4 oz of salmon shredded between 2 tacos. Again, not a good look for a $26 taco plate. Likely won't be back to this location again. read more

So fresh, and had a pleasant chipotle mayo which gave it a nice, unexpected dimension. The birria was also delicious, but paled in comparison.
