We had a friend who moved to the Bay and was visiting town again, so we decided to hit up a spot that our friends in Sawtelle had good things to say about! GETTING HERE AND PARKING: Very tricky, as Sawtelle always is. You'll probably have to drive around for a bit and walk a bit WHAT WE ORDERED: Sticky Ribs Diver Scallops Hand Roll Flautas Truffle Mac & Cheese Hamachi hand roll THE FOOD: Honestly, it was just okay to me. The sticky ribs were pretty tough compared to ribs you might get elsewhere. While flavorful, the sauce was pretty salty. The truffle mac and cheese was also a bit underwhelming as well - again, very salty, though the truffle was nice and not too overpowering as other truffle mac and cheeses tend to be. The stars of the show for me were the hand rolls and the flautas. The hand rolls were very fresh and was a nice concept being able to roll it on your own. I had lower expectations for the flautas but they were really nice - the potato really contrasted well with the crispy outside. SERVICE: AMAZING - best service I've had in a while! Our server (forgot to get her name) was very helpful, especially with us taking a while to order. The host also was very accommodating, even letting me sit down first despite my party not being there yet. VIBES: Darker lighting, but great for gathering up some friends and possibly date night. Man their taco skin are thin but tasty!!! Hangar steak taco? Perfection! The sauce, the meat, the skin that is so flaky and thin. At this point, is it still a taco or is it pastry? The only thing I can complain about is maybe they should have sliced the hangar steak instead of giving it to us to cut it. We just don't have the skill to cut it thinly to put it in the taco so is not a mess. But I do understand why as if they cut it the juice will leak out. Hermanito is such a fun neighborhood spot. Parking is definitely a pain, so plan ahead or be prepared to circle, but once you're inside it's absolutely worth it. The food is really delicious and perfect for sharing. Think small bites and tapas style plates. I came here one afternoon and easily parked in front of the restaurant! For the appetizers, I ordered the nachos and calamari. The Nachos were surrounded by chipotle cheese, pico, crema, cotija, guacamole, scallions, and escabeche. I remember how crunchy and flavorful each bite was. I must have been so hungry since I finished the entire plate before moving on to the next dish. The Crispy Calamari, which was buttermilk-marinated had chick pea flour, garlic chives, oil cured chiles, and pickled onion remoulade. This was a fantastic dish also and I was able to eat it with my next item to mix it up! The Birria Tacos were a major hit that had chile braised chuck, salsa de queso, consommé, and serrano pickled onions. These were savory and incredible! I literally finished all my plates and what helped was the affordable pricing of each item. Came here for my birthday dinner with friends and we had a great time. The restaurant is on Sawtelle and is a fusion blend of Japanese and Mexican. The server was very attentive to us all night and made sure we ordered an appropriate amount of food for our group of 4. We got the Calamari, Tempura Asparagus, Skirt Steak Tacos, and Pork Katsu dish. Our group also got some cocktails and the Yuzu one was a big hit. In my opinion the Calamari and Pork were both really heavy on the breading and made me feel borderline lethargic. That said the Pork Katsu was a very sizable dish - it could definitely be shared among 5-7 people with no problem. The Tempura Asparagus and Skirt Steak Tacos were the crowd favorites. Made reservations here to throw my dog a "celebration of life". We had 40 some odd people show up including his vets and vet techs. The initial contact was somewhat slow but they eventually worked it out. The staff for the party was great, they took care of us VERY well. We were in the private party patio room in the back. It was PERFECT for our needs. The food was amazing, I pre ordered for my large party per their request. The food is a Mexican-Japanese fusion. Make sure you try the potato flautas, everyone commented on how good it was. Street parking here is TERRIBLE. It's Sawtelle, it's busy. There is a small adjacent parking lot, I can't remember what the charge was but there are attendants waiting to take your money. I wish that they would offer regular food on the weekends and not just brunch because there are some items that look delicious like the triple mac & cheese and the pork belly! Service was fantastic, and I will add that one of the owners had an extra churro waffle that he got for his family and kindly offered it to us. It was delicious and my only comment would be if you were going to order this in the future to ask for the sauces on the side so it doesn't get mushy in the middle. I love restaurants like these with the BoHo vibe. My sister got the steak and eggs, which was delicious. We shared the guacamole which the kids loved with the chips. The food and service here are all stellar! I highly recommend coming here during happy hour. We enjoyed pitches of their margaritas (I was a fan of the mezcal - smoky but not overly so) and an assortment of their tacos and guac and chips. In terms of their taco selection, we liked the fish and birria. There's solid vegetarian options as well. The only food we got that wasn't that great were the tortilla chips that came with the ceviche. My boyfriend and I regularly come here for happy hour. It's a super cute restaurant and their staff is always friendly. Their happy hour menu is great! Our go-to's are always the guac, potato flautas, and birria tacos. We've also had their regular dinner menu items a bunch of times too and everything has always been delicious. I went for a quick dinner on Saturday with three other people! We decided on this place because my friends wanted cocktails and this one of the few restaurant establishments in the area that served them. After checking in with the hostess, we were seated almost immediately around 8pm which was very surprising since it was during peak dinner time. Their cocktails selection was very well-rounded and I really enjoyed my golden hour which was really sweet and fruity. A majority of my table only ordered cocktails which they all enjoyed. I was ravenous after an evening work shift so I ordered the miso seabass. I was pretty excited to eat considering the wait wasn't too long. Ultimately, I was pretty disappointed in this dish. I've had miso seabass at countless other establishments but unfortunately it did not measure up. First off, there was a fishy aroma from the sea bass, which I can expect to some extent, but this was really overpowering. Although, I had received a pretty sizable portion of fish, it lacked the miso flavor I was expecting. The char was really nice but it lacked depth and flavor. The sushi rice seemed more like regular steamed rice and wasn't what I was expecting. At this point, I can't really justify paying $36 for a dish that doesn't deliver. I decided to order the sticky ribs afterwards which definitely hit the spot. They were sticky, sweet, tangy and a very generous portion size. I would have liked the ribs to be a little more tender but they still very tasty. Service was fantastic! Probably one of the highlights of our visit next to the cocktails. I have no complaints and we were pretty in and out for the most part. Looking back, I think I would return for cocktails and maybe to try a few other dishes. But... What you need to know, before all else, is HAPPY HOUR. Hermanito is your classic upscale Mexican restaurant. The tacos are dressed up with flowers, the margaritas aren't made from a premade mix and hit just a little harder, and the ambience is cute enough that you get dressed up to eat there. But what would make me choose hermanito over a few other very similar Mexican restaurants on the West side is their fantastic happy hour situation. What might originally seem like slightly overpriced suddenly is a steal with both tacos and margs being around $10 each. I got a house margarita (fantastic, and salty just how I like em) and the carnitas tacos (good flavor, not the most mind blowing tacos I've ever had but very solid). It's labeled as Mexican-Japanese fusion so it immediately caught my attention. We came in on a Friday and it was packed but we managed to snatch some seats at the bar. The menu is diverse and offers a range of dishes that cater to various tastes for meat lovers, seafood lovers or vegetarians. Loved the cocktails here, I chose the midori inspired cocktail. We definitely over ordered, especially on the appetizers. We got the queso fundido (this was amazing), guac and chips as well as the hamachi crudo. For our mains we got tacos but I was eyeing the karage buns. The achiote chicken taco was my favorite and the birria tacos were also pretty solid, but definitely felt heavy on the cheese. Hermanito happy hour lasts from 3-6 PM and we were able to easily get outdoor seats at 5 PM on a Friday. Ordered the calamari and doubled up on the Palomas. My favorite order here to date. Have ventured out here a few times and have also had their mezcal margaritas which are spicy(!) and their carnitas and fish tacos which are solid but nothing too exciting. Parking is the Sawtelle standard with meters on the main street and plenty of free street parking on the adjacent streets. He had a beer; I ordered a lightly dirty martini, which, a full half hour later, the waiter told me they couldn't make because no olive juice.
