Fantastic concept, however, there were some things that I wish were different. I was so excited for two of my favorite cuisines to come together in an intimate dance between the vibrant flavors of Mexico and the deeply complex taste of Japanese food. Here are some improvements that could be made: 1. I have no problem paying for a quality meal, but the prices were slightly off from what seemed adequate. 7 dollars for chips and salsa but 18 dollars for 4 yellowtail handrolls is just one of a few examples of an interesting price discrepancy. I will say the yellowtail handrolls were delicious! 2. Flavors and dishes on the menu were slightly misleading. We ordered the Osaka burrito but got a deep fried chimichanga, it was a little heavier than what was expected from the panko encrusted description (just put Osaka chimichanga). The tomatoes in the slaw were saved by their mango friends which balanced out the flavors enough to eat the entire dish. The abundance of salt in the tomatoes drew out too much moisture causing some unwanted sliminess, and made them so sad I felt obligated to sign them up for therapy. 3. The cauliflower dish is such a great idea, but the flavor of the cauliflower overpowered all of the other components of the dish. If the cauliflower were fried as much as the burrito was with a healthy amount of achiote seasoning, and the 4-6 pomegranate arils were actually a robust pomegranate sauce drizzled around the dish, it would be a 10/10 veggie plate. I will say on a positive note, the service was great, and the waiters were so nice when we were disappointed with the food. They took back our dish with no hesitation and took it off the bill no problem. If you are out on Sawtelle, looking for a good vibe, and don't mind opening up your mind to some new flavors, then Hermanito is a great option. It wouldn't be my first choice personally, but I would be open to going back if I was invited by some friends, or if they changed up their menu a bit. read more

decided to finally check out hermanito for happy hour (3pm-6pm daily), and it was definitely a cute spot for some drinks and light bites. however, i would not come here if i was looking for a proper meal. the highlight of my meal was the jamaica mojito, i will definitely be making these at home because it was just perfect! a $14 happy hour cocktail isn't the best bang for your buck... i tried some of the vegetarian options, the flautas and mushroom tacos. i really liked the flautas! the crunch of the shell and lettuce combined with the soft potato was nice, and the avocado crema was perfect! the mushroom tacos were good, but if the mushroom is going to be the star, i've had better mushrooms. the crispy noodles were fun for some texture, but overall nothing strong flavor wise. overall, i think this place just isn't for me! pricing doesn't match the quality of food imo (and especially as a vegetarian). read more

Came here on a Monday evening for girls night out and had a fantastic time. The interior of Hermanito is really cute they have different sections within the restaurant that gave each area a cozy intimate vibe. Our server was absolutely delightful, she was friendly, helpful and attentive. We kicked off the night with a fancy margarita which was both stunning and delicious. We ordered a bunch of dishes to share and they all came out at a decent pace. They didn't make us feel too rushed to finish a dish before the next arrived. The food presentation was beautiful and everything tasted good. I do wish the charred octopus was more charred but at least it was soft and not chewy! The ladies also wished there was more goat cheese with the Achiote cauliflower. There wasn't anything that particularly stood out taste wise but I think we all enjoyed the queso chorizo fundido the most! I've had this restaurant on my bucket list for the past year, so I'm not sure what took me so long to finally try it! It's super cute, conveniently close to us, and a huge plus that it's dog-friendly. The poor bartender was very pleasant but was swamped with orders coming from the bar and the restaurant. She was apologetic since it was taking so long. GETTING HERE AND PARKING: Very tricky, as Sawtelle always is. The sticky ribs were pretty tough compared to ribs you might get elsewhere. While flavorful, the sauce was pretty salty. The truffle mac and cheese was also a bit underwhelming as well - again, very salty, though the truffle was nice and not too overpowering as other truffle mac and cheeses tend to be. The stars of the show for me were the hand rolls and the flautas. The hand rolls were very fresh and was a nice concept being able to roll it on your own. I had lower expectations for the flautas but they were really nice - the potato really contrasted well with the crispy outside. SERVICE: AMAZING - best service I've had in a while! Our server (forgot to get her name) was very helpful, especially with us taking a while to order. The host also was very accommodating, even letting me sit down first despite my party not being there yet. VIBES: Darker lighting, but great for gathering up some friends and possibly date night. I came here one afternoon and easily parked in front of the restaurant! For the appetizers, I ordered the nachos and calamari. The Nachos were surrounded by chipotle cheese, pico, crema, cotija, guacamole, scallions, and escabeche. I remember how crunchy and flavorful each bite was. I must have been so hungry since I finished the entire plate before moving on to the next dish. The Crispy Calamari, which was buttermilk-marinated had chick pea flour, garlic chives, oil cured chiles, and pickled onion remoulade. This was a fantastic dish also and I was able to eat it with my next item to mix it up! The Birria Tacos were a major hit that had chile braised chuck, salsa de queso, consommé, and serrano pickled onions. These were savory and incredible! We got the Calamari, Tempura Asparagus, Skirt Steak Tacos, and Pork Katsu dish. Our group also got some cocktails and the Yuzu one was a big hit. In my opinion the Calamari and Pork were both really heavy on the breading and made me feel borderline lethargic. That said the Pork Katsu was a very sizable dish - it could definitely be shared among 5-7 people with no problem. The Tempura Asparagus and Skirt Steak Tacos were the crowd favorites. The only thing I can complain about is maybe they should have sliced the hangar steak instead of giving it to us to cut it. We just don't have the skill to cut it thinly to put it in the taco so is not a mess. But I do understand why as if they cut it the juice will leak out. This place really is the one for me. Amazing cocktails, amazing appetizers, and incredible entrees. It's my top 5 place I always like to come to. They even had the dodger game running on a projector!
