My sister's fried fish dinner with sweet potatoes and cornbread
    Tamara S.

This is my 1st time after seeing this spot over 100 times. I give it a 4-star because the staff was very friendly and pleasant. I ordered the beef ribs, potato salad, and corn. I was disappointed in the ribs, one large bone hardly had any meat on it and it was saturated in BBQ sauce. The potato salad was just okay. However, my sister ordered the fried whiting and it was delicious. Flavored just right. She wasn't fan of the collard greens. I will go back to try the fried fish sandwich, but not really interested in the sides.

Whenever I want some delicious fried pork chops, I come here and they never disappoint! Lightly fried and well seasoned-- they give you 2 good sized chops. I typically get the mac n cheese and collard greens and have found consistently good flavor on both. That said-- this time I did try the barbecued chicken and my daughter had the beef short ribs. The barbecue sauce was good and the chicken was moist and tender. The portions are always a lot and I wish I'd gotten to eat the rest of my chicken, but my daughter finished it for me the next day. She said the short ribs were delicious. There aren't a lot of tables (more of a carryout than a dine-in type of place), yet we can always find a place to sit and eat (my food never makes it out of the door lol). A young man came in asking for food and when I offered to buy his meal, the owner stopped me and gave the man food for free. I wouldn't have mentioned it, except that the week before someone surprised my sister by buying her meal (she paid it forward, of course). Some good karma working in this place....

The food is excellent, the service is really good too I always get the catfish, Mac and cheese with greens or cabbage, doesn't take too long but is still recommend placing your order on the phone just in case they get busy, oh and did I mention The food is really tasty here!

Barely any meat on the bones for $17/$18, expect one rib that was meaty. Plate was thrown in the trash.

The ladies in the front were amazing (3 stars), but the cooks in the back need to get it together. Ordered beef ribs and I've never seen beef ribs look like this. Waited a hour for my food, a waste of my $23. Food is definitely not good, not sure if it's a location thing. Why would you sell customers this? The meat was super dry, hard, & burnt. Mac n cheese not good and greens weren't good. Barely any meat on the bones.

. Everything was awful string beans mushy I'm so mad. I just wasted $30 on this meal.

This was the nastiest salty food nothing was good about it nothing $30 wasted they use to be so good what happened I still taste salt

This place has seen its glory days. This is the 2nd location to the one on U Street in DC. For decades my family and I appreciated the location on U Street for classic comfort food such as baked chicken, fried fish and sides such as sweet potatoes, mac and cheese, potato salad and stuffing. The Oxon Hill location was promising at one point but I don't know where things went wrong. Menu items suddenly became either too salty in taste, soaked in gravy, proteins fried exceptionally hard and deprived of tender-juiciness and/or bland sides. The freshness of the food is perhaps my biggest turnoff. Considering the quality, consistency, constant sell-outs and customer service the price is not commensurate. Back in 2021 when the owner pushed their "Drummer Boy" campaign, which was the owner given customers a free fried chicken leg wrapped in a slice of loaf white bread, I experienced the restaurant play stalling games in order to keep from having to hand out free chicken. I honestly wasn't so concerned about getting a free chicken leg as much as I wanted to take part in a "feed the community" campaign that I thought was meritorious on behalf of the owner. Generally lukewarm customer service, the aforementioned customer service experience and the obvious decline in food quality is just too much for me to overlook. The one shining star that I will still consider is their sweet potato pie although it too is an inconsistent recipe. For this to be such an iconic community restaurant at one point their inconsistency and decline unfortunately keeps me from recommending this business.

    Beef Liver & Onions

I went here to grab lunch and noticed how bright the lighting is throughout the cafe. Although it's small, there was enough room to sit down and wait for my order. I ordered the beef liver and onions with a side of Mac and cheese and candied yams. Cornbread was also provided. The liver was very tough to chew on but well seasoned. The macaroni and cheese tasted slightly watery and the noodles were soggy. The candied yams were a bit too sweet for me. I also ordered a slice of sweet potato pie, and that was too sweet for me (not pictured). I've had better soul food and will go elsewhere.

    Burnt hush puppies

These were not sweet and burnt. The main reason why I didn't order big. Definitely not the same..

After reading through a number of glowing reviews, I decided to give it a shot, and I am so glad I did. It lived up to the reputation completely. If you are planning a visit, consider this your warning to pace yourself because everything on the menu is worth ordering. My group definitely went overboard, but in the best way possible. We started with the deviled eggs, which my table mates raved about. I didn't personally try them, but based on how quickly they disappeared, they are clearly a must-order. The pork belly ssam was a standout, perfectly balanced and easily one of the highlights of the night. We also shared the dirty chicken and the tater tots, both of which hit the mark. For our sides, we opted for the namesake corn succotash and the seasonal ginger broccoli. Both were seasoned beautifully and complemented the heavier dishes well. It is rare to find a spot where the sides feel just as intentional and well-executed as the entrees. The drinks were just as impressive, rounding out the meal perfectly. My only advice for next time is to exercise a little more restraint because while I want to try everything on the menu, the portions are generous. I will definitely be heading back soon to work my way through the rest of the offerings. It is a solid choice for anyone looking for elevated Southern comfort food in a great atmosphere.

The restaurant has a nice vibe and décor, but has too may steps for me, not good if you plan on getting lit. Our server was amazing, she was very knowledgeable and professional. Food wise: The cornbread was good, it came out pipping hot, with butter melting. The pork belly was my favorite.... Omg the Pork Belly was the star of the show---it was so sticky and sweet, the eggs and potatoes were pretty good, nothing extortionary. I was a bit skeptical about the eggs being from a carton, since I didn't see any white in the eggs. The chicken was so greasy and slightly soggy on the bottom. I don't think I'd order that again, the waffles were pretty good. I feel like the chicken and waffles are just great for show, in my opinion that dish didn't really deliver what I thought it would. I would return again, the chicken did not discourage me. It could've just been a bad day. I would recommend giving this place a try.

We were seated inside, which had a decent amount of seating. I thought the restaurant was cute, and it had a nice ambience. The vegetables were also very good, and the pita it came with was great. On the breakfast menu, we ordered the chicken and waffles and shrimp and grits. Both were very good. I haven't had many chicken and waffles, but the chicken was tasty with the hot honey. The shrimp and grits was very flavorful. If I had to pick one though, I would probably pick the shrimp and grits. We walked in and were blessed to immediately get a table despite being told it may be an hour wait on the phone. We received a menu and ordered the breakfast burrito and the biscuits and gravy. Our food came extremely fast which surprised me and makes me wonder how much is prepped ahead. My friend received the burrito and it was very greasy so she requested to order something else. My biscuits and gravy were yummy. The eggs were cooked well and the fried chicken was the star of the show. Easily this was some of the best chicken I have had in a while. I overall enjoyed my meal but I wish there was way more gravy as there was only a little bit layered on top of the 2 biscuits. My friend was given a menu to order something else and this menu was different and had dinner options. It was 4:30 when we came and not more than 15 minutes of difference before receiving a menu the second time so we were surprised but eager to look. My friend ordered the half chicken which came with collard greens and grits. Since there was a different menu I wasn't aware of I wanted to order something additional and opted for saving the brunch meal I ordered for breakfast tomorrow. I loveeee scallops so when I seen them on the menu especially over grits I had to order it. The scallops were cooked wonderfully and I loved the composition of the dish with the creamy grits and the acid from the tomatoes and the smokiness of the sauce and grits. My friend loved the half chicken and after trying it myself we both agreed Matt and Tony's knows how to cook chicken well. The greens had nice flavor but were a little dry and needed some broth/juice from cooking. Again the grits were delicious and creamy with a bit of smoky flavor. I also had the Peso Cocktail which was sweet with a nice kick. Overall I enjoyed this restaurant and would come again and absolute what I ordered again as well. Coming here next time will be hard cause I'm definitely going to be battling between wanting what I already had and trying something new.

My friend ordered the yams, string beans and catfish - and from what he let me try (I was only interested in trying the catfish), I loved it! I think it would be something that I'd order as my side next time. For desert, I had the cake the following day and loved the fact that the icing was homemade - not heavy or thick. Now the only thing that I haven't noted was the service. Was the staff attentive and great with their recommendations, yes - but their line was just so long. Maybe I came during a rush but to get all of the delicious food offered, it did take a little longer than expected. Other that that, I loved this place! Pack your patience, and appetite!

Y'all are open but where's Ms. Ella? My platter is horrible. I knew I should have gone to Carolina…read moreKitchen but keep hoping time after time it'll get better. The new location is nice but the food has changed. Never again. Turkey wings falling off the bone with no taste, no seasoning on the cabbage and the yams are the worst I've ever had. The best thing I had was the lemonade that Kill Moe made. SMH! Y'all be blessed!
