I brought my daughter here for her 21st birthday! It was a very last minute decision as it was a work/school day for everyone so it was pretty late by the time we arrived. We arrived about 45 minutes before closing. The server had to get permission from the kitchen to serve us, which was understandable, as we had a group of 6. We were sat downstairs near the bar and served with very friendly service from Christian. They even brought out cake for the birthday girl and allowed us to have her open her gifts. Christian also assisted my daughter with ordering her first drink from the bar! The food we ordered was amazing! I got the bucket of chicken for myself and my 10 yo, while others at the table tried the shrimp and grits and some amazing side choices like brussel sprouts, mac and cheese, and mashed potatoes. I appreciate the wait staff, the cooks, and the management for making this day special for my girl especially at the last minute :) we will be back for more food and great service! read more

Made brunch reservations at this spot for my nieces birthday. Found parking upon arrival and we were seated immediately. The restaurant has a nice vibe and décor, but has too may steps for me, not good if you plan on getting lit. Our server was amazing, she was very knowledgeable and professional. Food wise: The cornbread was good, it came out pipping hot, with butter melting. The pork belly was my favorite.... Omg the Pork Belly was the star of the show---it was so sticky and sweet, the eggs and potatoes were pretty good, nothing extortionary. I was a bit skeptical about the eggs being from a carton, since I didn't see any white in the eggs. The chicken was so greasy and slightly soggy on the bottom. I don't think I'd order that again, the waffles were pretty good. I feel like the chicken and waffles are just great for show, in my opinion that dish didn't really deliver what I thought it would. My review is based on my take out experience of Hen Quarter. I got a chicken sandwich, hush puppies and a side of macaroni and cheese. The chicken sandwich was the best thing out of the items that I ordered. The hush puppies were a little on the overcooked side but were a decent size. Had they not been too overcooked, I would have enjoyed them more. The macaroni and cheese was my least favorite. I felt like it was noodles featuring some cheese sauce topped with a crispy bread crumb. The macaroni and cheese could have used a little bit of salt and pepper to season it up a bit. read more

My friends and I went to Hen Quarter for brunch recently. We had a reservation but it took them a while to get us to our table. We decided to order brunch family-style: fried green tomatoes, devilled eggs, and cornbread for appetizers - everything is delicious! For the entrees, we had French Toast, Shrimp and Grits, and Biscuits and Gravy. We also ordered Chicken and Waffles on the side. The Chicken and Waffles were impressive but the rest are not memorable. The service was not as great as I expected. Our server didn't seem to be in a good mood. The ambiance was okay. I was craving chicken and waffles and this place had great reviews. I was mildly confused when we came because the restaurant isn't shown as southern on Yelp, it looks more like an American brunch joint. The name was also different posted inside. It was fine because they had what I wanted but just a note. I was confused. The inside is cute, they have a downstairs and upstairs seating area. The upstairs seems more upscale and the downstairs is more casual. Our waiter and I believe the owner were very generous. Our waiter gave great suggestions. The prices were high in my opinion, but the location also gives way to the high prices. I opted for the kids chicken and waffles because the regular one was expensive and offered four pieces of chicken. That seemed like a lot of food. However, the kids was not enough for me. If I hadn't ordered the side, I would have been hungry still. The chicken was fabulous and tender. The meat fell off the bone and the breading was seasoned great, very flavorful. The waffle was also perfectly crispy. I also ordered a side of green beans. The sauce and spice was delicious, however, I do wish the green beans were marinated and cooked more. The green beans were crunchy and I prefer more of a soft green bean. My boyfriend had the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich. The chicken was delicious and the spice they used was perfect. The restaurant was really nice and modern. We had a reservation and it was really weird when we arrived. They made it seem like the had no tables and we had to wait to be seated. However, when we're sat upstairs, they had a ton of empty tables. Our waitress was ok, she brought us what we wanted, but she seemed rushed. She made me feel weird for ordering the peach tea cream soda, she described it and her attitude was "like sure if that's what you want". Maybe people are weirded out about that drink. When we had a different server, he was calm and polite. The food was good. We ordered the family style brunch. Tried the deviled eggs, fried green tomatoes, and the cornbread. Five stars for this spot! The customer service was top-notch, portions were generous, and the bottomless mimosas were a perfect touch. Plus, they went all out with Halloween decorations--my favorite--so extra points for that! The fried chicken and waffles were truly exceptional, served in a portion big enough for two. A few weeks back I stayed down in The National Harbor celebrating my sister-in-laws birthday with a few people. We had a great night going to Fogo De Chao and the casino and the next morning we wanted to find a brunch spot before we all headed in separate directions. I hit up Yelp for the hail mary and found this spot. My wife likes to put the pressure on me always telling people me being Yelp Elite (though I was stripped this year, after 9 straight because of whatever new system that was put in place this year. I was invited but, got an error when it asked if I accepted my elite status, and after being told things would iron themselves out, it didn't) Either way, after doing some homework we came here and had a great time. We got the family style brunch deal and bruh! This place is a little chaotic, but the food was excellent. The family style brunch is like 31.00 a person, and you can choose 3 starters/ family style dishes at a time unlimited. We had.... Deviled Eggs: smoked paprika, bacon, relish Fried Green Tomatoes: cornmeal breading, truffled arugula, cajun remoulade Southern Scramble: bacon, sausage, cheddar, fried green tomatoes Brussel Sprouts: halved brussels, bacon, truffle balsamic Crab Cake Benedict: jumbo lump crabcake, poached eggs, buttermilk biscuit, crawfish hollandaise, breakfast potatoes Shrimp & Grits: crawfish, tomatoes, scallions, shrimp broth, chicken sausage Berry French Toast: Vanilla-infused cornflake-crusted challah bread, strawberries, bourbon maple syrup, chantilly cream All of the food came out plated beautifully. No sauce, or anything that would make you want to eat that much eggs ate once. It was just such a contrast from all the flavors in the other dish that it was hard to be impressed by it. I feel like it needed a bread or something else with it. The brussel sprouts are roasted just the way I like, but some thought it was too charred. I could've eaten them all day. The crab cake benedict & shrimp and grits were my two favorites. So much flavor and they don't skimp on the meat at all. Everyone's eyes at the table lit up when these dishes came out, a lot of lip smacking, and head nods of approval. We barely had room for the french toast, but it was also delicious. This whole brunch was a homerun. I wasn't aware that this was a black owned business when we came, but I was happy to be supporting them. You can tell that they really take pride in the food they're serving. My only regret is that I wasn't able to try the fried chicken that I kept seeing people order. By the time I realized that chicken came with the avacado toast it was to late, and we were on the way out. There were a few other large parties around us and everyone seemed to be having a good time. I really wanted to like this spot...food was great, our server was attentive, and it was easy to locate off of King St. Towards the end of our dinner after we paid we noticed a mice running around the restaurant! We thought we only spotted one but there were two unfortunately. We brought it to the staff's attention and all they said was pest control was scheduled to come in a few days. We came here on a Sunday morning with friends who live in Alexandria. We didn't have reservations but were sat without any wait. The host promptly informed us of a 2 hour max time for the table, which seemed a little odd especially given how many empty tables there were. We weren't there more than an hour, so it was fine. Our friend's son has a milk allergy and we appreciated the server's (I think his. Are was Tristan) attentiveness to helping clarify what was safe. He said the kitchen told him the chicken tenders didn't have milk but we suspected it was buttermilk battered like the other chicken dishes so we took off the coating in an abundance of precaution. Once again we celebrated our friends birthday at the best brunch spots in the DMV. The food is truly amazing. We were able to decide of starters and main courses prior to arrival which made everything so smooth. For starters we got the deliver eggs (high recommend), Caesar salad, and Brussels (please do not skip the Brussels!). For the main course we ordered the all time favorite, the pork belly. We spent the evening in Old Town recently with my daughter and her boyfriend. Seeing that her boyfriend is from Boston, we wanted to find some good southern food. Well, we found it. Hen Quarter, for those that remember, is where the Austin Grill once resided. The decor is very rustic and comfortable. Dress is casual and the wait staff was very attentive. We were seated upstairs, away from the bar area. For an appetizer, we had to go with the fried green tomatoes. I fashion myself as a connoisseur of this dish and Hen Quarter knocked it out of the park. They were hot, lightly fried and still had a bite to them. 10/10 on my FGT scale! The serving is eight slices; enough for each of us to have a few. I could have eaten all of them. For entrees, I had the blackened catfish over cheesy grits. Yes, it was as good as it sounds. The catfish was perfectly cooked and they give you a nice sized portioned of perfectly cooked grits. This was really good! Everyone else had the fried chicken. The chicken is served on a round butcher block which fits in perfectly with the decor. They all loved it and chomped it down to the bone. This is the spotlight dish and it was remarkable. The sides of mac and cheese, collards, mashed and green beans were ample and well done. The Mac and cheese was the only side that could use a bit more flavor, but it was fine. All in all, Hen Quarter has a great menu and the dishes are legit. We will be back to try some more of their wonderful entrees and more of those fried green tomatoes!! read more

Crab Cake Benedict (4/5): I wish the crab cake was bigger, but other than that it was very solid. Brussel Sprouts (4/5): Great texture and flavor. I really enjoyed these.  Deviled Eggs (4/5): Nice and creamy. The relish added a nice tanginess. I also liked the crunchy bacon bits.  Biscuits and Gravy (4/5): Dense, doughy biscuit with some really tasty gravy. Unfortunately there wasn't nearly enough of the gravy. Cornbread Skillet (3/5): Too dry and not as sweet as I like. Came here for brunch on 4/20/24 with two of my homegirls. We made a reservation for 1pm and were seated promptly. This restaurant is located in the heart of Alexandria so parking can be a bit sparse. There are several garages but if you can find street parking it's truly a steal. The location is 2 floors with the bulk of the seating up top. They serve brunch for 31.95 where you can pick 3 starters and 3 brunch favorites but at a smaller size. This option is unlimited but you can't take home any leftovers. We opted for al la carte We ordered: Watermelon mimosa - 10/10 it's your typical mimosa but the flavor was good Pink Peach (not the same but close) - 10/10 the only complaint I have is they put sugar on the entire cup so my hands ended up very sticky by the end of my drink. Cornbread - 10/10 - it was super light skin when it came to our table so we were all concerned it might not be good. We were wrong and so happy to be. It was light and crumbly and the butter gave it a moistness that made it melt in your mouth. We did not have any leftovers Deviled Eggs - 10/10 - these might be the best I've ever had. The filing was perfect, it was savory, salty and sweet with just a little bite from the relish. I'd order these again in a heartbeat. Brussel sprouts - 10/10 - BS can easily be a hit or miss depending on how they're cooked. They were cooked to perfection here. Just enough that they were soft but also crispy. They were served with a sweet and salty sauce that I ended up dousing them in and then pairing them with my pork belly. It was delicious. Chicken and waffles - 10/10 - the one serving was enough to feed the 3 of us with leftovers. The chicken had an amazing texture without feeling over fried and rough. Paired with the fluffy waffles and their house maple syrup it was easily a star for all three of us. Even once the dish cooled off the chicken didn't lose its crunch and the waffles were still soft to the touch but flaky. I'd come back just for this with someone new and stare in admiration and envy as they got to try it for the first time knowing I'd never experience such joy again. Pork belly w/eggs & potatoes - 7/10 - the eggs were perfect cooked over easy and the potatoes fried with onions and peppers was so good! I love my home fries in different cuts of potatoes and they managed to pull that off without leaving any under or overcooked. The pork belly was VERY chewy though. I ended up asking our server for a tougher knife so I could get through it. I wouldn't try that again. Service - 100/10 - our server was a beautiful girl named Adrienne. Let me start by saying we stumbled upon this place while staying Old Town. We did not have a reservation, however they still seated us. Jennifer was our server and was absolutely amazing l. She was so attentive, friendly and made the overall experience even better. We also had another young man come by several times to check on our finished plates (Antwon), he to was so friendly and polite. Now to the food! We started with the fried green tomatoes.... Let me tell you as someone from the south I grew up on fried green tomatoes, grits, fried chicken etc and these were great. The breading was just right with a delicious flavor. If you've never tried them this is great place to start. My husband had the 1/2 quarter chicken with mashed potatoes and Brussel sprouts. Let's start with the Brussel sprouts, he never eats them and he finished every one of theirs, and he loved them. He said "if I could make them just like this I'd eat them all the time." I was not a fan, but I am not a vinegar person and these have a vinegar type dressing. The mash potatoes were good too. Now the chicken, unfortunately for him it was over cooked and a little dry, but he said it had a great flavor. He chose the truffle butter and another sauce that some heat to it. Overall his was a 4.1 out of 5. Now let's talk about the star of the show, my catfish and grits. First of all I make grits all the time and am very picky because not everyone can make grits right. Welllll let me tell you, these were perfect....so creamy and delicious. The catfish was amazing topped with a crawfish sauce, OMG I could have bathed in this sauce. Again if you have never tried grits this is where you should try them and just know this is what they should always taste like!!!! 10 out of 10. Then while sitting there, the chef brought over a hamburger to try that had a shrimp and sauce on it!! Again 10 out of 10!! And then a complementary dessert a deconstructed apple pie....now I don't like apples, but I ate every single bit of it!! For $30 you'd think an extra waffle (4 more triangles) would be included. French Toast (2 pieces for $17 was high) didn't have any Corn Flake crust to it and were very dry (see pic). We had an awesome time at Hen Quarter for a nice weekend brunch. First, I'm gonna say that I thought EVERYONE on the staff that attended to us was super friendly and absolutely amazing in their jobs. No one left us wanting for anything, so A++++ on service. The restaurant has a $31.95/person family and Southern style (unlimited) brunch, which allows you to have a little bit of everything. If memory serves me correctly, there are about six starter dishes and eight entrees that your table can choose from. My favorite dishes for the afternoon were the Biscuits & Gravy, Pork Belly & Eggs, and Shrimp & Grits. I'll admit that I was not too impressed by the selection of the starters. Note this was based more on my personal preferences. For instance, I'm not a huge fan of Deviled Eggs. For an additional $24, diners (or rather, drinkers) can have unlimited mimosas. I believe there were 3-4 different mimosas that one could try (eg, regular, watermelon, strawberry, and something else that I cannot remember). Although the unlimited mimosas is $24, I'm not sure why the restaurant also charges 35 cents for each refill. Perhaps, it has something to do with the city/county. In my head, I'm like why not just charge 30 or so bucks for the mimosas and get rid of the refill fee. Although I do not reside in Alexandria, VA, I definitely would not pass up the opportunity to visit Hen Quarter again. 5 star service and good good. We stopped in for date night over the weekend and really enjoyed ourselves. We were able to easily snag a reservation, which was nice. Our waitress, Leah, was amazing. She was very helpful with my food allergy and was familiar with the menu. We started with the skillet cornbread which was just amazing. We will order it again for sure. For dinner I got the chicken and waffles and my husband got the hot chicken sandwich. The chicken and waffles were crazy good. But so much food! I swear they accidentally gave me the family size lol! We will definitely enjoy these leftovers. My husband enjoyed his sandwich however he didn't love the fries. He said they could have done with another go in the frier to crisp them up nicely. The waitress approached and asked if we wanted "sparkling or still water:" I assumed "still water" was simply tap water. To my surprise, they charged us $8 per bottle of water for Italian Acqua bottled water- which wasn't even opened in front of us- it could have been an empty bottle just filled in the kitchen with tap water (for all we know). If a restaurant is going to charge for bottled water- the patron should witness its uncorking and they should be aware of the fee. The food was fine, but nothing special. There are so many places in Old Town, I think we will choose another brunch place next weekend. $16 for water that we barely drank (because we ordered other beverages) seems like a money trap. read more

First things first, this place is upstairs and not the lower level establishment when you first walk in the door. My wife walked in and was quickly seated only to realize we were at the wrong place. In the back, up the steps is actually Hen Quarter. Upstairs is much bigger than the downstairs area as there are two sides. This place wasn't busy however we didn't see our waitress often. We ordered the following, HQ Special Fried Chicken- The presentation was great. The food was piping hot however the chicken and greens lacked seasoning and the breast were dry. The Mac & Cheese was delicious though. The cornbread was dry as well and most of it stuck to the bottom. My highlight food wise was the crab hush puppies. These bad boys were delicious. Upon arriving around 1pm on a Saturday afternoon, we were escorted to a table downstairs within a few minutes of entering. I do recommend making reservations for brunch, lunch, or dinner. This is a popular restaurant and for good reason. I ordered a cup of coffee, donuts, and the shrimp and grits. The coffee was okay (I had to ask for a spoon to stir it) but the donuts and the shrimp and grits were delicious. My partner ordered the steak and eggs which included breakfast potatoes and after the first bite he was happy. I tried the steak is and it tasted like it just came off a grilled flame. Yum! Parking in the area is metered and can take a bit of patience to find a parking spot but read the signs to avoid getting a ticket. read more

The food was average, nothing special. The service was okay, the server didn't return after dropping off the food. Ambiance was casual, plenty of seating and TVs (showing various sporting events). It's not a terrible restaurant but there are plenty of others spots to visit so I probably won't return. read more

We actually ended up going to Hen Quarter twice in our weekend to Alexandria. The food was excellent! One day we did the family style brunch which was great and ALOT of food so come hungry. The biscuits and gravy were awesome and so was the cornbread and caesar salad. The pork belly was also full of flavor. We came back to try the chicken and waffles and the portions are huge. The chicken is so flavorful and so crunchy. We brought leftovers back to the hotel. I recommend the biscuits and gravy and chicken and waffles! I was a little disappointed when the three course mail menu that I thought online was not available that evening. However, the friendly and gregarious service that I received from Jonathan made up for that. The place, definitely lives up to his name with absolutely delicious fried chicken, catfish and grits was divine And the fried green tomatoes weren't bad either. The house made lemonades and tea are supremely sweet and dangerously delicious. The chef visited our table to personally receive our compliments. I was gifted a brownie sundae for my birthday dessert to seal a wonderful evening. read more

The service was excellent. Our waitress was very attentive and professional and made sure our food came out in a timely manner. She deserves four stars. Food was only three stars. Fried Green tomatoes - they were delicious and fried just right. Shrimp and Grits. According to my friend, it wwas simply delicious. Chicken and Waffles - the chicken was tender and seasoned just right. I miss the corn that was previously in the waffles. The fat pork was not good; no taste and just a piece of pork heated and plated. Grilled brussel sprouts - delicious. Big breakfast was good, but the ham could have been thicker. We had such a nice time here and our server was incredibly friendly. The decor felt very fancy/corporate, good for taking out a client. Food was great and not overpriced, but their main thing is fried chicken so it felt like a mental leap to go to a fancyish restaurant for fried chicken(?) But certainly not opposed! The lemonade cocktail I had was really mild but then the lemon drop was strong AF so pick your poison carefully! The mushrooms were pretty heavy on the gravy, although flavorful, I couldn't finish them. The Mac and Cheese was really excellent and had an assortment of pasta shapes which made it feel really home made! The fries honestly left something to be desired, not as crispy as I'd like them to be, and the baked potato was really basic, my husband didn't even touch it really. BUT the chicken was awesome. A swanky place to get upscale but approachable Southern food. They're partnered with The Rub Chicken Chicken and Beer downstairs, so you can get something from either menu. The Rub seemed a bit more casual than Hen Quarter and we had our kids with us, so my wife and I decided to hang down there. We went upstairs just check the place out (and use the bathroom). The dining area has a nice date-night vibe, but could be a great place to get drinks with friends. The bathrooms were clean. As I mentioned, most of my experience here was just the food. We ordered the skillet cornbread and a charcuterie platter. Everyone at the table enjoyed the charcuterie platter; good cheeses, meats, spreads, and pickles. Would get again. The cornbread was just okay. It was tasty, but I think it could have used more honey butter drizzled on top or on the side; it was mostly concentrated in the center.
