I want to add my experience to the many reviews of the post office at 4601 S. Cottage Grove Ave., Chicago, IL 60653. Unfortunately, my experiences at this location have been consistently disappointing. The level of customer service is far below what the public should expect. Many of the employees I've encountered have been dismissive, rude, and seem uninterested in helping customers. There is often little sense of urgency, even when lines are long or people simply need routine postal services. The employees at this location receive excellent pay and benefits, and with that comes a responsibility to provide professional, respectful service to the community. Instead, it often feels as though doing the bare minimum has become the standard. Customers deserve to be treated with courtesy--not as though they're an inconvenience for asking someone to perform the job they're paid to do. The mail carriers have also been a major source of frustration. In my experience and neighbors, too, mail delivery has been inconsistent, and interactions with carriers have often been curt and unprofessional. Reliable mail service is essential, and residents should be able to depend on it. If you have the time, I strongly recommend going to the main post office at 433 W. Harrison St. instead. In my experience, the staff there are more professional, more efficient, and far more respectful. The extra drive is worth avoiding the frustration of this location. To the management of the Cottage Grove station: this office needs leadership, accountability, and a renewed commitment to customer service. The Bronzeville and Kenwood communities deserve a post office that reflects the hardworking people who live here. There is no reason this location cannot provide efficient, respectful, and dependable service. Where do I begin. I recently got a new job working remotely but missed when they dropped off my new laptop and the notice instructed me to go to this location. They open at 9 and I clock in at 8am. I was already nervous to have to ask my manager if I can run to the post office on the clock and the reviews I read for this location did little to alleviate my trepidation. Sure enough I arrive at around 9:00 and right when I walk in there is an issue at the front of the 7 person line where the man is asking for the manager. The lady then leaves to go to the back and leaves us standing there waiting with no instruction while another staff member escorted the man to the other end of the office. We were left waiting for about 18 min till I had to yell in to the opening to tell them that people were still out here and needed help. I couldn't hear what whoever responded said back over the loud music playing at the front. But I'm sure it was unprofessional. Any way after another 5 min a staff member came up and begin to help. I barely got back in time to make my meeting. I talked to others waiting to in the line and this is a common occurrence. I understand serving black communities comes with out an own challenges. But staples like the post service are there to not only set t he example but to remind us how to treat each other. Do better read more

This is absolutely the works USPS location possible. I have literally never gone to such a terrible location. The workers here are NEVER happy or showing any signs of good communication or proper service. Every single time that I've been here I end up being late to whatever I need to go to next. The workers are NEVER doing their job and are always in the backroom laughing and having a conversation while people are waiting to simply drop off a package. The workers are simply not being trained enough and they no longer know how to do their jobs. It's rude and inconsiderate for them to be wasting peoples time like this. I live on 43rd and Ellis, clearly not far from this post office. I haven't received mail since April 13th. I am waiting for time sensitive mail and received nothing as of yet. I visited the post office on May 7th and explained my situation. I was told by the employee to get a PO Box and then she called the next victim. She was so nasty and unhelpful, I will never go back to this location. I believe they are simply not delivering mail and marking packages as delivered when they clearly have not delivered them at all. I can see from previous posts that this has been an ongoing problem. Always a line out the door. Opens a half hour late. If you try to arrive at opening times ypull stand in a line wa5ching people inside ignore you. Slow, rude staff. I asked the lady behind the counter for the cheapest option with shipping, she gave me a sticker and made me leave the desk to spend 30 seconds filling it out. Then I had to wait in line again. This post office is awful. The wait is ALWAYS long and the customer service is usually horrific. I went one afternoon and there were over 10 ppl in front of me. Two windows open. I waited an hour and the line barely moved. I left and returned the next day. There were about 6 ppl in front of me with one window open. I waited about 45 minutes. Says it will be delivered on the next delivery day--a week later, I still don't have it, no response to my emails trying to get it delivered. I email them I'll drive in to get it the next day. Zero stars. The McGee Post Office is supposed to open at 9 am. Eight patrons waiting outside. One patron went around to the back and found the postal workers smoking at the rear door. They finally opened the branch at 9.15 am--no apology, of course. If someone hadn't gone to the back, we would still be waiting outside. When a business opens at 9 am, that means everyone is behind their desks at 8.30 am, logged in to computers, making sure stamps and other items are on the desk, and prepared for customers. A big sign out front says "the Post Office Is Now Hiring." I suggest the USPS fire the lot of them and start fresh with people who need and want to work. read more

Never in my life have I ever been to an establishment that is so consistently, horrendously subpar. The lines? Always long. The employees? Always slow. The customers? Always frustrated. I'm now convinced that they steal packages as well. I've had two packages be marked as delivered in mailbox before post is delivered to my address and when the carrier arrives they "don't have" my package. I never even saw the postal person. Let's use common sense people. My bigger issue with this branch is the lack of resources and supplies as compare to the smaller branch located in the Lake Park Mall.

Simply abysmal. They mark items as "delivered" although they never approached the home (per video surveillance). So you are left with no delivery and no recourse. The claims process is a waste of time. read more

The slip they left at the door to my building stated the package would be held at the post office for at least two weeks before being returned to sender, and both times it has been sent back within a matter of days, before I had a chance to pick it up. A recent newspaper article listed the HENRY W MCGEE -- Post Office, located at 4601 S COTTAGE GROVE AVE, in CHICAGO, IL 60653-9998 as one of the worst facilities in the nation. I am saying this is not so. Being a long-term homeowner in the Oakland-Kenwood community, I say this office has never disappointed me. My packages and mail deliveries are always arriving in a timely manner. But the customer service at this facility is also outstanding. If they are unable to assist you with a specific problem, they usually have a solution or recommendation for you. But the above reasons are not why I am writing this note. My postman is the reason why I am notifying you today. Unfortunately, I don't know this gentlemen's name. But I do know he is a young adult and regularly runs the route for my address. This guy always goes beyond the cause of duty. He makes sure that my packages are left securely, in a remote location, when packages are left for me. He collected my Netflix return videos from my mail slot, which eliminates my need to walk to the post office box, which is approximately one block from my home. During this past inclement weather, he was just wonderful. He never complained about uncleared icy and snowy porches or sidewalks to residents. He understood that his senior residents did not have the energy or disposable income for residential snow removal. He just did his job and delivered our mail. I very seldom give this postman a Christmas card or a monetary gift for his services. Money is always too tight to mention. This post office couldn't help you if its life depended on it. For starters, it is supposed to open at 9:30 on Saturdays. They make up their own hours and open when they feel like it. Then, they lose packages. A LOT. There is no organization, it always sounds like there is 30 people in the back but only 2 or 3 in the front, and yes, there is ALWAYS. A. LINE. Prime example. I received notification yesterday that a package was delivered to me. Yesterday being Friday. I rush home and of course, no package. With it being after 7 and the post office being closed, I figured I would just wait and go back up there this morning to pick up the package, thinking the delivery person was either too inept or lazy to leave a delivery slip. Why did I do that? Of course they claimed that it was left in the hallway - WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU DO THAT? So now I'm sitting around waiting for a callback from the supervisor (which will never happen) to find a package (which I'll never see) because it was either (1) stolen by the carrier or (2) stolen by someone else. Oh, did I mention this post office is 0 for 3 in delivering packages to me? On the flip side, there are a couple of people there that will do their best to help you. I understand the gov't made cuts for financial reasons, but this post office is always absolutely ridiculous. I've been next in line for 20 minutes. The only lady that was able to service me (all I wanted was a receipt for a pre-paid package I was dropping off) stepped away for that amount of time while worker #2 assisted ppl picking up packages. I told worker #2 I needed a receipt, she couldn't help me. When worker #1 came back to the service area she stated worker #2 could've taken care of this. 20 minutes and I was the only person in line. This place is HORRIBLE! They are slow, unprofessional, and the hours are unreasonable. there is always a line, understaffed and horrible attitudes! I have had three packages that the tracking numbers show delivered but in fact were not delivered to my house. My boyfriend and I went to this post office to submit our passport applications (new for him, renewal for me). Appointments are pretty much meaningless, we were helped 1 hour+ over our scheduled appointment time. The woman assisting with passport applications was less than friendly. I personally can overlook an attitude as long as I'm able to get everything I need done. Fast forward 2-3 weeks later....BOTH APPLICATIONS. I repeat, BOTH APPLICATIONS, were rejected for minor incompletions after being reviewed and sent off by the post office agent. So not only did we have a terrible experience trying to get it done but it wasn't even done right!! I honestly don't understand how the "new" application was rejected unless the postal worker removed our identification documents. So now we are forced to pay for additional postage and experience delayed passport completion. Smh. The 2 stars are for the non-passport related services...All other employees were helpful and the regular mail services lines were moving along. Ultimately, DO NOT come here for passport services.
