I had the pleasure to meet Jessie Reed from USPS located at 433 W Harrison Chicago IL. He went out of his way to call me directly and made sure I was aware my mail was not being delivered due to the fact I had made an error on my address change. I was completely shocked that he would take the time to call me and reassure me that he was taking ALL my mail back to the post office so I could pick it up the next day. Sure enough I called him to just tell him I was at the post office to pick up my mail and he was more than happy to bring it down to my car, since it was a good amount of mail. What a gentleman, he was so nice and informative on what I should do to get my mail. I just want him to be acknowledged because I must be honest I had no faith in the postal service workers I had some bad experiences, but Mr. Reed changed that with his kindness. They never have enough people working and the only working man is honestly one of the sweetest employees I've ever met. He's very sweet but they need to hire 83 of him. Please hire more people at this location! It does get fairly busy after work and I went at 10:30am on a Thursday and there wasn't anyone behind the counter for 15 minutes as an associate was belong locate a package for a lady-which is so nice of him but where is everyone else?! Some people even left the line as it was so crowded and they only had a limited time frame to come here. It was that bad! I've come here before when I've had packages to just drop and I use the kiosk but this time I had to go up there personally. I haven't met a friendly employee at this location. I usually use the self-service kiosk to avoid having to interact with the clerks, but sometimes the kiosk is down and I have no choice. I also had a serious incident on the escalator. It caught my skirt, and despite multiple attempts to stop it, the escalator continued running. I returned the next day to report the incident and was told the person responsible was not there. After being given the runaround, no one ever followed up or compensated me for the damage to my dress, nail, watch, and other belongings. The elevators are also raggedy and often seem poorly maintained, which does not inspire confidence in the overall safety and upkeep of the facility. It's disappointing to experience such poor customer service, especially since the post office operates with very little competition. I do have another post office that I prefer, but this location is open later, which is sometimes more convenient. The facility often looks deserted, although there has been security in the parking lot since it reopened. Another frustration is that the location sometimes closes earlier than posted hours or seems to close whenever it wants. Overall, every visit feels like an inconvenience. read more

I had a PO Box at this Post Office... "had" being the operative term. Packages at my building were getting stolen at an alarming rate. Thus, I decided to get a PO Box so my merchandise could be stored in a secure, government building. Plus, I really loved that they have incredible hours, being open until midnight Monday through Friday, and late into the evening on Saturday and Sunday. Alas, this is the only good thing; everything else has been one issue after another. There was a major issue of packages seemingly not being delivered. I would see the tracking notification stating it was, but no 'package waiting' slip in the mailbox. I would bring this to the staff... some of whom checked in the back, while others stated that if there was no slip, it was still moving through the building. After this repeated enough times that some of the staff remembered me, and after I said "the only thing there is the cardboard on the back," he realized that the PO Box was effectively marked as vacant. Uh oh. It was removed, and I thought it would be uphill from there. Nope, there was a further issue. But first, a quick note about Street Addressing. PO Boxes at this Post Office come with Street Addressing, a service where your PO Box comes with a real street address. In trying to find out what this address was, most of the staffers had no clue what I was talking about. I eventually learned what it should actually be from a poster in the hall. Once I knew this from an official USPS source, and the "vacant" sign was removed, I ordered an item to that street address. The UPS tracking showed it as being delivered to the Post Office. However, the package was nowhere to be found. It ended up being a whole lot of finger-pointing, with the package seemingly being swallowed by The Void. After this, I decided it was time to close the PO Box. It was unable to fulfill the function I needed it to, and this is in large part due to negligence (i.e., not taking proper care) by this USPS. Final nail in the coffin: the number of letters that get lost, and the delays if they don't (about a month), are beyond unacceptable. read more

My mom came on May 29th to return a lulus package with the return label on it for UPS. She made a mistake and took it to this USPS instead, and the employee still took the package from her anyway. Chicago postal services are non-existent. Wait in lines to get service with a scowl, mailed something from Ashland St. location- never got to the destination. Mailed certified letter on 7/21/25 from a different location, still waiting for it to be delivered to destination- First Class-Certified means nothing 10 days later- no delivery. The Bedford, IL distribution center is lacking in efficiency and management. Mail sits in the distribution center for days or is lost. Do not trust the Chicagoland USPS service. My mom and I went here to mail out my wedding invitations and we couldn't be more pleased with the service, truly. The two USPS staff members at the front desk on Thursday 7/3/25 at ~3:30pm (I regret not getting their names) were truly phenomenal and provided such great customer service. Can you believe the retail (live person staff help) hours you can have with this post office? This is the main post office in Chicago with amazing hours for those who need life help with packages or express mail or passport services. For passports, You can ask someone if you have everything ready for the renewal or first time passports and mail it from here. They say you should expect express passport service to be processed in 3-5 weeks so for regular passport service maybe 1-3 months ish. Plan in advance. It's vast and nice and you have escalators to go up to the service floor. On the floor above parking which is FREE... which is a rare in downtown Chicago...There's a self service mail box area for stamped and metered mail so you can drop off and go. The staff were very kind and friendly. Trust me you can't get friendly and kind service at many post offices in Chicago so enjoy this one. At 9:00am on a Tuesday it was not busy at all and I only had about a 10 min wait with 3 people ahead of me. You should definitely come here whenever you need to do a late night run or anytime. I have a PO Box at 433 West Harrison since 1996. For the past 4 yrs I've had numerous packages that were shipped in a timely manner but when they arrive at this PO location they disappear. They will say "delivered" when you check tracking but in fact the packages aren't being put in the PO box, nor the yellow card they "should" put in your box if it's too big to fit. I had a package tracking showing it was delivered to my po box July 16th, I've been 4 times in the past few weeks, there's no sign of my package pkg. I was there again today, no package :⁠'⁠( Someone in their parcel receiving area is stealing customers packages, tampering with mail is a Federal offense, this place needs to be investigated by the FBI and arrest any employees that are stealing packages. People are always there complaining about not getting packages. I'm going to discontinue my po box, service has been horrible and the people at the front desk seem lazy, esp the chubby guy with dreads. Customers have no way to complain, the consumer affairs phone # and the website isn't really functioning to complain about packages stolen. Only employees access the parcel area so it's employees stealing them. If you contact consumer affairs they send an email & they close the case without investigating, then send you a survey. Horrible Management at this facility and non-customer service! -I was notified that an Amazon package that I had shipped to my address was being held at the 433 W. Harrison, Chicago, IL 60699 main post office (due to a customer request which I never gave). I went there to retrieve the package on 6/29/20. Stood in a long line, only 3 workers working in customer service. When I finally get to the front of the line, I explain that I'm there to pick up a package. The associate (African American, short bob haircut) tells me she doesn't know why Amazon sends people here and proceeds to give me a phone number to call to retrieve my package. The number was incorrect as the person on the phone told me that I need to get a different number from the associate. I had to ask the associate again for another number. The associate was like "I don't know why she just didn't give you the number" and looks on a sheet to give me a different number. The number she gives me this time, the phone just rings. I ask to speak to a supervisor, she told me no supervisor was there. The associate questioned me as to why I didn't pick up my package sooner - what difference does that make and why would you ask me such a question? I called back the original representative who gave me a couple of other numbers to try and no one was picking up. I was there, my package was there but it was a wasted trip because no one was available to get my tracking number to give me my package. Left empty handed. Some of the worst customer service of a building establishment I've ever experienced. 30 minutes of nothing but wasted time! I was the only customer in the place and girl at the counter refused to mail my packages telling me to use the self serve kiosk as she sat there scrolling on her phone. I love this USPS location for many, many reasons. Let me count the ways: 1. They have free guest parking. In West Loop, Chicago, this is an absolute luxury. Take it for what it is. 2. The USPS doesn't use a dime of taxpayer money for its operations (by law it earns its revenue) and provides Americans and their businesses with the industrial world's most affordable​ delivery network. The USPS delivers to 155 million addresses six and even seven days a week, delivering more than 49 percent of the world's mail. Yes, the WORLD!!!! The USPS is the core of the $1.4 trillion national mailing industry, which employs 7 million Americans in the private sector. They fuel all that stuff you buy from Amazon Prime. Ever heard that old adage, you get back what you put out? Listen, to those going to any post office, you get what you give. How would you feel if you had to deal with hundreds of people that were irritable and rushing; coughing on you; wanting you to perform magic while they were on the dang phone; that wanted everything now, now; wanted free supplies (tape, envelopes); and didn't know how to fill out simple forms all while being rude? Our USPS and its employees are working hard for us every day! Little fun fact did you know that even if you go to the Brown service (UPS) or FedEx that 75% of their packages still get processed by, you guessed it, the USPS! So you pay them 20-30% more because of fees the USPS charges them -when you could just go straight to the source. The mail is still the most affordable way to get something from coast-to-coast and in my experience, delivery errors are very very rare. I'm from a much smaller city, so I was shocked to see that this post office was open and taking packages until midnight. In most other cities, everything is closed at 5/5:30pm. This is such a luxury and convenience but it's probably not fully appreciated (most people don't appreciate what is fully available to them b/c its always there). At this location, there is plenty of free underground parking. On my first visit, I just followed a fellow patron to the elevator and ended up where I needed to be ... the second floor, so warm and it smelled nice. This location is huge and lovely visually. Ms. Gloria was nice - service was quick & easy - she even made sure that I took my receipt with me and circled my tracking number; now that's customer service! Man, these folks here are working hard for the people! Another tip, a great way to get good service ANYWHERE before you start pushing packages and papers is to ask the person "how they're doing", treat them like a person FIRST and I'm sure your service will be much smoother. More importantly, someone that's been beaten up by others all day could actually smile from having an encounter with you - go the extra mile for you even, the one person that cared enough. Passport services were excellent, although we did wait a substantial amount of time. That stated, there are a large number of chairs available to persons waiting for passport services so you can rest while you wait. This was the third of three USPS passport locations that we attended for service. The clerk was the exact opposite of the stereotypical USPS worker has become (lazy, rude, and unhelpful). The passport clerk was extremely courteous, very helpful, genuinely nice, and interested. Skip all the other USPS passport locations and go to the Harrison location, unless of course you want to Yelp about awful post office experiences throughout Chicagoland. read more

I made an appointment to renew my passport 3 weeks in advance at this location. I get to the office 20 mins before my appointment. I was told to have a seat because the passport agent wasn't there yet. I thought that was odd because when I made the appointment I didn't even choose the first time-slot. I waited over an hour for her to show up. Finally an employee told me I'd have to reschedule. Apparently the passport agent just decided not to come to work that day. The employee that was there tried to call and text her and she didn't respond. I was then told to avoid making appointments on Saturday because the passport agent doesn't always come in. I asked, how come the system allows you to make appointments on Saturdays at this location if there's no one here to process them? She said the passport agent is supposed to be there, she just doesn't show up sometimes. I guess employees at this location are allowed work at their leisure and not show up to work when they feel like it. read more

This review is solely for USPS Operation Santa which has been providing holiday cheer for families in need since 1912. In 2017, only 15 postal branches nationwide will offer the program, usually in a large city at a single branch. Chicago's Old Main Post Office is one of those locations; Mon-Sat 7:30am-7pm and on Sun from 10am-5:30 pm to adopt a family. The process is very simple...go to the 2nd Fl and you will be greeted by some wonderful volunteers that will help you through the process. Which is basically read letters to Santa and pick the one that speaks to you. Bring it to the volunteers and they will have you fill out a very easy form and show your ID. They have tables to read the letters with boxes of tissues because many of these letters will touch your heart. After you pick your letter then the fun begins...time to find some presents at Santa's Workshop (Amazon, the mall, Walmart, Target, etc.) Lastly you wrap the gift, box it up and bring it back to the same location (Main Post Office). You will have to pay for the postage. This will become my family's holiday tradition and hopefully it will become yours as well. Happy Holidays!!! read more

WORST. POST. OFFICE. EVER. I have had a PO Box at 433 w. Harrison for about ten or eleven years, and for the most part, it was good. They have extended hours and a parking lot. Then, about a year ago, it got really bad. There are some good employees, but most of them are rude and only do the absolute bare minimum when it comes to their job. There are absolutely no standards or consistent policies, you just have to get lucky and hope you get someone that feels like helping you beyond the least amount they are obligated to. The biggest reason I have a PO Box at all is to receive packages, because I don't feel it is safe to leave the packages outside of my building. Over the last year, it has taken longer and longer to get the notification slip in my box. I have waited days, even over a week sometimes, and then the workers are rude when you ask for help. The worst thing occurred recently and they lost a very important, expensive package I had delivered from Istanbul, they don't even know where it is, they think they sent it back to Turkey. I went four times to try and pick it up, was treated rudely at times, and I . I knew I would be getting important international packages periodically so I doubled checked all of the procedures necessary and I did what I was told. There should have never been a problem. I am incredibly pissed off. This place used to be good, and now it is an embarrassment. These people were so unprofessional that they burned a bridge with someone that has been with them for ten years. read more

We had a great experience applying for a passport for my kid. We made an appointment ahead of time and they were ready for us a few minutes early. The woman who helped us was really nice. She got our paperwork together in less than 5 minutes and knew EXACTLY what needed to be done. We also had my kid's photo taken there which saved us a trip to CVS. Pathetic. I booked an appointment with the USPS-Harrison location for Passport Service. My appointment was at 10am. I got a call from USPS about an hour before my appointment to change it to 3pm. Not happy about it, but said ok. I get there at 3pm, and nobody is at the Passport Service Desk. Other USPS workers told me the Passport person is running late. 2 other customers show up and all stated that their appointment was also cancelled on the same date and rescheduled for 3pm. Really USPS ? Cancel all early appointments and reschedule them for the same time later in the day and then dont even show up ? I left at 330 with no Passport Service to be found. I did not come here to get a passport, but I did come to mail an important document that I didn't trust the local PO to handle (Yelp reviews for the Pilsen PO are brutal). One super important thing to note, they have some free street parking along Canal on the side adjacent to the PO, AND they have a free lot (entrance on Harrison). Super helpful to not have to pay extra just to mail stuff. I was there on a Thursday sometime between 3 and 4, and it was fairly quiet. I was looking at the mail forms debating which ones to purchase when one of the staff came up to me and asked if I had any questions. You heard me right, SHE CAME UP TO ME. What government office does that anymore? Apparently the PO. She was really helpful in advising me what kind of postage to get if needed, ultimately we determined I didn't need anything extra in particular (no up-selling here!) and she pointed me toward the mail drop box. My old work brought me to this area of the southwest Loop back in aught one (dagnabbit). Back then there wasn't a Potbelly on every corner, or even one damn Potbelly's, actually; and the horrible visits to Cardiss Collins at that time was surely one of the things that Dante's editors left out of the Inferno. In recent years, Cardiss has improved immensely. They've piped in the Smoove Jazz station (yes, this actually does seem to help people waiting in line relax), added a few self-service stations for sending packages, and upped their game in the service department! On my last two visits having to send a package, one employee insisted she help me work the self-service station. She was super patient, even when I kept accidentally punching in wrong things on the touch screen. She also kindly helped another customer with an issue as she helped me. Sending a package yesterday I was pulled out of the regular line to be helped at one of the service desks in the area where you can buy commemorative stamps and such. Cardiss Collins is almost starting to feel like a little one-Stop-sign-town Post Office. And while smaller Post Offices in the City of Chicago are downright dreadful, this large one is doing it up right! read more

I usually don't leave reviews, but I want to give Jamila the praise she deserves at this USPS location. My partner and I were closing on our first home this week, and we needed some money orders last minute to cover some of the closing costs. She was very knowledgable and efficient in issuing those for us. I also had Jamila as a clerk a few months back whenever I applied for my first passport. She was super knowledgeable then on the process and got me through my appointment quickly. I know it's tough times for the USPS right now. A lot of the reviews here are often a reflection of circumstances born from that rather than a representation of the staff at a given location. Out of all the post offices that I frequent in downtown Chicago, I've always had upstanding service at the Cardiss Collins location. As a young millennial who is so accustomed to doing nearly everything virtually or electronically, I can often be clueless about USPS products and services. Despite my ignorance, the clerks here have always treated me with dignity and respect. They have been super helpful in teaching me how to protect myself when shipping, applying for a passport, or even getting money orders. If you are in need of some horrible customer service, look no further than the USPS. Job security is very good here since they can act any old way without consequences even if you are polite to them. Now that I'm doing the daily train commute to downtown Chicago for work, my errand time is severely limited. I do miss WFH 3 to 4 days a week in my last gig. I didn't realize how good I had it till it was taken away. Oh well. So I needed to mail a package out hence my visit here. I walked a little over a mile during my lunch break which was closer to 1. The place wasnt busy at all. I go up to the line and Charlanne and Marge (not their real names) were carrying on a conversation like I wasnt there. Eventually I got summoned and C looked at me like I was an inconvenience. I had everything ready except for the tape to retape box since I was recycling an old box. When I asked if she had some, she told me I'd have to buy a roll. Uggh. Fine. So I get out of line to get the roll and take care of the package. As I said it wasn't crowded so didn't take long to get served again. This time M had that inconvenience. She was even worse when processing my package. She was having a side convo with C and another gurlfriend the whole time. I said thank you and she didn't even look at me. I hope my package gets to its destination ok. I knew I should've gotten delivery confimation. The kicker: I learned there was a post office closer I could've gone to get crappy service there instead. Life lessons learned. Lol. read more

Good reviews?!? Yes, they have great hours and it is usually a painless experience to get stamps or mail something. Unfortunately, they do the mail for my neighborhood and it is a mess. I get mail for others in my complex all the time. Several times in the last year I have gone online for a mail hold. What happens next is one of two things. Boatloads of mail will be stuffing the slot when we get back from vacation or I go down to the hub for the pickup and wait and wait and wait and wait until they tell me they don't have anything for me. WTF? That's reassuring in this day and age of ID and Credit theft. Items that don't fit into the mail box are often left on our front step, which is on an alley. I haven't been to this USPS location in years (first time today since moving back to Chicago). I really like this location as it is handy to get to from the South Loop, there is plenty of customer parking in the garage, and there are evening and weekend hours. This modern post office facility has basically taken over much of the burden that was stationed at the outdated and giant old Post Office complex hovering over the Eisenhower Expressway in the south Loop. Place is an absolute joke. I never write reviews. I'm a buyer/seller and live right up the street so I'm up there every day. Had a woman behind counter last name is Garcia ask me what was in the box that had a battery. I told her MacBook Pro (worth $2500) she told me I would have to repackage the mail. Asked me to select ground and select something smaller. Asked me if it was new or used. Said I couldn't get insurance with ground. Hindsight - why all the questions? But you give people the benefit of the doubt. Not in Chicago and especially not at this place. I also simultaneously mailed the charger in a bubble mailer, also ground. The MacBook Pro conveniently didn't get scanned in. And never was delivered. The charger was delivered three days later. I suspect mail theft with the Garcia woman being involved. I asked her to look for my package a week later and she said computer is froze and said these deliveries can take months. Months? Lol. Just trying to let time pass because she knows more time that goes by the better for her. She isn't all there and has clear mental health issues. I was going to use that money to pay my rent now I just learned a very expensive lesson. I typically try to be polite to these miserable, MISERABLE, old dusty hags but I've had enough. Just a word of advice for those renewing passports...do it on any other time except during holiday breaks or anytime CPS students are on break. I came to this location to renew my passport because 1) it expired years ago (ooops) and 2) I lost it (double oops) so I had to fill out additional paperwork and go in-person and 3) they had late hours for passport stuffs (until 7pm). I got there just before 5:30pm and there were about 25 people in line. Ugh! Half hour into my wait, I hear others discussing that they had been waiting since 2PM!!!! What in the heck? There was only 1 person processing the paperwork and at least 3 families of 4-5 people each and a few families of 3. Pro-tip: PLEASE take your picture at a Walgreens because taking pictures at this facility just delays everything!!! Long story short, I was finally attended to by 7:45 pm because another postal worker decided to help process passports considering the long line. Second star is really for the employees. Despite the long lines, and despite everyone's frustration, they were very nice people. I just think the entire process of renewing a passport is completely unorganized. Also NO PUBLIC RESTROOM in this facility! Gotta pee? They recommend going across the street to the Holiday Inn. Ugh, I'm never losing my passport ever again! read more
