Let's be real; giving an "OK" rating to a post office is like giving it a 5-star review. This post office is not terrible. At least, not on this visit. It's located in federal plaza, north of the Kluczynski building and kinda behind an anonymous, forgettable sculpture. (Calm down, that's sarcasm.) I stopped in shortly after noon today with a letter to mail, and decided to see what Forever stamps they had, and the ones they had weren't all that great so I skipped it. The woman helping me wasn't rude, but like many postal workers didn't seem to want to be terribly helpful. It's huge though so physical distancing wasn't a problem at all. They are still requiring masks as of June 2022 (yay!), and have hand sanitizer at the entrance too. They also do passports here, and there are (or have been) passport photo places just across the street in the Marquette building, so you can pick up your passport photo and apply for it next door. As mentioned, this is part of the federal complex. As such, it's also a Mies building. I'm not a fan of Mies van de Rohe myself, and I got my fill of his architecture working on the campus that still uses him as their claim to fame. The federal buildings are part of his legacy here in Chicago. But that makes this a significant building architecturally speaking, and follows exactly his bare bones, steel-and-glass style. Just to be thorough, I'll mention that parking is not going to be a thing you can expect to do here or really around here, especially with any certainty. But if you're going to this post office you probably know that already. I was surprised to see that apparently there aren't pick-ups at this location until 6 pm? That was unexpected. Line took close to 30 minutes when all I wanted to do was drop off a prepaid package. Upon handing it to the woman at the front and getting my printed receipt, she proceeds to chuck it behind her without looking or caring. It truly caught me off guard and left me in shock as I'd ensured to place fragile item stickers on each side of the box. Hoping my package did not become damaged due to her negligence. read more

I brought an USPS medium sized box to the desk and was told I needed to by tape. I asked about the USPS Priority tape because that's what is typically used. She looked to the lady next to her and said "these damn people with their attitudes". I grabbed the tape next to me and in a few second had it all ready. As I was handing it to her she said go tape it and come back. I replied it is ready to go, she walked away talking trash! Assholes post office workers. Always rude with yucky unhappy faces. One time she screams at me for not using self service kiosk to mail my parcels. Even lies that all pre-paid labels should go through the kiosk, because it faster and they are not scanning them at the check out window. Got it! The other time I'm getting an attitude because I went to use a kiosk, but ohh my gosh this time I should of go to scan the label with her, because it was 10 min before closing and they wanted to shut their doors earlier and kiosk takes longer. When I was done, there was a lovely USPS lady who instantly directed me where to put the package and my stamped envelopes. Super observant!!! This is the most convenient post office that I go to since it is so close to the downtown area. When the line is short, service is fast and great. But when the line is long, it gets annoying. There was one instance when I was told that their systems crashed and my credit card takes forever to make the payment. There was another instance when I had to wait in line for 20 minutes to use their automated machines only to be told that the machine could not provide the service I required. Thats when I had to move to the long line to see an actual USPS employee to mail out my package. Despite these issues, the USPS still increases their prices. I wish they would understand that the reason why people don't use them is because they suck. This winter, I received a Christmas card on January 9, 2013. The card came from California and was post marked December 17, 2012. It took 23 days to get domestic mail delivered to me by USPS in Chicago. REALLY?!?!?! This location is vast, a veritable USPS Mothership. I was bummed to find out that Aon building post office near me closed. Even though it was a smaller outpost, it served a need and was convenient to have so close by. I went online to see what my nearest option would be, and came up with this centrally located post office. I did not know what to expect from this particular location when I stopped by to mail off a return package. I was prepared for lines out the door, and only a few workers. I turned out to be pleasantly surprised as there were a number of postal service workers taking customers at the long counter in front of me, and hardly anyone in line. The size of the space means there is also enough room for niceties like tables to address envelopes, tape up boxes, etc. There are also self-service kiosks for routine tasks. After seeing so many mixed reviews, I'm hoping my positive experience here was not a one-off, but so far I'm feeling optimistic. read more

Large and beautiful location but horrible customer service. There were two clerks and only one appeared to be helping customers. The other person was gossiping right in front of customers with her other colleague. This continued for 10 minutes as the line continues to build up behind me. I walked up and she said "excuse me, did I call you?" and told me to step back so I complied. She eventually calls me up and I asked her if she can tape my envelope because it wasn't sealing properly and she just threw it down and yelled "next" while I was standing there. I was not combative at all but that experience left an incredibly sour taste in my mouth. I will go out of my way and pay more money just to avoid this location! read more

I initially ignored the bad reviews because I needed to get my packages delivered ASAP, but I really do wish I'd believed them. I told the woman at the front desk that I was a seventeen year old who'd never done this before, and proceeded to ask a question or two to make sure I wasn't labeling anything incorrectly. I wasn't holding up a line or asking too much, I just didn't know what I was doing. The woman rolled her eyes, mumbled incoherently, and sent me to self-service to figure it out on my own. This was frustrating, but I was able to find a nice woman who was also using the self-service machine to help me out with labels. From there, I put one package in the bin and brought the other to the front desk again because it was oversized. There was a new woman running the desk, which I initially thought was a relief given my past experience. However, she loudly complained about me using the self-service for the package and called me "f***ing stupid" (along with many other unkind words) for doing something I was instructed to do by her coworker. She then harshly told me to put the package in the bin it was too large for as she continued to curse at me. In the end, I was there for a full hour with only two packages, I don't even know if they were put in the correct spot, and I was on the verge of tears because I felt so incredibly angry at the process. It's actually 0 stars. I lugged a baggage in the heat here (about .5 mile) with a prepaid label sent to me by the company to return it. Once the workers bothered to acknowledge my presence (it was early & there were no other customers), the lady sneered at me that "there was no way" I was sending that package with that label since the label was only for 16 oz or less packages. I felt like I'd tried to commit a crime the way she treated me! I asked if she was sure since the company had sent me this. Rather than empathizing at all or telling me I could buy postage on my own and giving me an estimate, she just said yes. I lugged it back home and complained to the company, who did apologize and send me a different label. SO, the lady was right-but could have been friendlier about it; however, I then lugged it back today and was told by I think the same lady (not for sure) that she wouldn't accept it this time either BECAUSE THEY ONLY ACCEPT THINGS IN LBS AND OUNCES AND MY LABEL WAS IN CENTIMETERS!! I asked her for a survey form because I planned to complain online, but she told me "I ain't bought nothing" AND "I didn't understand nothing" so she wouldn't give me one!! I then asked for her name and she told me she didn't need to provide it if "she felt threatened." THREATENED?? Threatened to get a bad review, yes!! Isn't that what the surveys are for? Accountability for your job performance and customer service? The busy Loop branch of the Post Office is part of the Federal Center complex designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. It is a one-story glass and steel block that relates well to its neighboring buildings (the high-rise Dirksen and Kluczynski Buildings). The interplay between the bright red Calder sculpture and the dark Mies buildings is like an architectural tango. The USPS has been struggling in survive on its meager funding for a while now. In today's day and age where emails are becoming more prevalent than handwritten letters, it's no wonder there are fewer and fewer workers at the offices. But I digress. If more postal service funding gets cut any more, I worry how awesome workers like Alan at this USPS location will find a job. He is so friendly and helpful. I typically don't write reviews for businesses other than restaurants, but my experience with him certainly warrants a positive review. He enjoys talking to the people that walk up to his window. He smiles and honestly tries to make your experience a better one. I know the line is long. I know there are usually only 2-3 people at the window when there is room for 10. Guess I should have read the other reviews BEFORE I had to spend 30 minutes + of my time to get some stamps! When I got in line, I thought the wait wouldn't be TOO long--there weren't THAT many people in front of me. Soon I realized that behind that long counter was only one clerk! Well, another clerk showed up as I was third in line. Again, had I read the yelp reviews, I would have known to wait for the her to summon me after she finished doing whatever these clerks do between customers that the clerks can't seem to do if the next customer tries to save time by being attentive and coming up to the counter before being summoned. I didn't notice any signs warning you to wait until these mighty clerks summon you. So, when I got up to her counter after the other customer was already out the door, I was given a stern " Next time you come here wait to be called". Me: "No problem. There is no next time." After I made my purchase, she handed me the receipt and asked me to fill out the survey because they like to hear what we have to say. Me: I doubt it after that long line" Aah, filling out surveys--yet another way for USPS to waste our time! After reading the yelp reviews of everyone who is not related to these clerks (5 stars???), surely the powers that be know what "skilled workers" are behind those counters doing the best they can to ruin the customers' day. (They are so good at it!) USPS probably has a hearty laugh whenever we complain because this place is the pits and from these reviews, it looks like it's been that way a very long time. I haven't been in this post office in 16 years. Don't remember it being THIS bad. This post office makes the neighborhood post offices look like amateurs when it comes to mistreating customers. I honestly can't believe I'm writing a positive review of a USPS location, but I am. I've been to this location a few times now at the base of an gigantic, amazing Alexandra Calder flamingo sculpture. 98% of the other experiences I've had going to the post office have included, panic attacks, fits of rage, extreme sweating, ringing in the ears, a dizziness that only appears when under extreme waves of hatred, depression of course and sheer boredom. At this particular location I have experienced none of these symptoms and even experienced new sensations such as relief and mild joy. I've even caught myself in this location thanking the service workers, which in other locations would be utterly unthinkable. I've renewed a passport and send large annoying packages without any attitude or grief. I highly recommend this location, it's actually pleasant, which is crazy to state. read more

I only encountered condescending women on a power trip, eager to put each person in their place...overly proud and fully leveraging every ounce of their mighty post office authority! The first self-important women to greet me told me to "sit down precious" because I had a question and was standing at the counter, yet to be acknowledged by anyone in the post office. The next women actually chastised me for not reaching across the counter to put my paper work directly into her hand instead of setting it on the counter. Seriously? She didn't ask me to put it in her hand and she wasn't blind so I told her she could've taken it off the counter at any time. I love people with a sense of humor, especially postal employees. I had a pre-stamped envelope stuffed with too much stuff to be only $.42, so I asked the lady to weigh it. Plus, I couldn't remember if it's 42 cents or 44 cents these days, because who uses the snail mail, anyway? "This gonna be 61 cents, baby." My hand to my pocket: no coins, and no cash in wallet, and I had just switched briefcases, so no photocopying change, etc., which I usually have. "Damn, hun, I guess I have to go to an ATM and get some money. I should have done that on my way here." "Awe, baby, let's do a number on Uncle Sam. You got a plastic?" "You mean you'll take a credit card for 61 cents?" "Haha, yes, siree. Reach in that wallet, baby and let's both have a blessed day. It ain't really 61 cents cause you got the .42 on the envelope. People hate the Post Office...the lines are long and it always seems to be a chore to get what you want. No one is ever really happy on either side of the desk at most Post Office facilities. Today I met some really nice post office employees, who were very helpful in giving me information about renewing a passport. After going to the federal building, where I always go for this type of thing, they told me to go to the Post Office because they only handle emergencies! Wow! Really! Talk about passing the buck! Luckily this post office is right in the courtyard of the Federal Building. Two nice ladies started helping us and giving us all of the facts about what we needed to renew the passport. Their information was very valuable and they told us everything that we needed. Unfortunately we have to come back because we did not have an original birth certificate...so that did not make me happy but that is not the post offices fault. As we walked out, I looked at my wife and said, "Wow they were really nice and super helpful!" It was one of the nicest experiences I have ever had at a Post Office in my life. I can hardly wait to come back here. There is also a special desk and line for passports, so you do not need to wait in the regular postal line. That is a huge bonus! read more

I'm blessed to have to use this post office often. It took 26 days for them to get a certified letter to Cermak/Chinatown from the Loop. As of writing, it's March 10, and we're just receiving our mail postmarked Feb. 18th. We've missed events and opportunities because of them. Be nice, smile, and let it be known that you're not leaving until the problem is fixed. Today, I was told they don't have the paperwork to do registered mail. I expected that answer. I stood there, smiled, and requested an affidavit from the manager to confirm their lack of supplies. I have some time sensitive materials and I'd need to show proof if there was litigation due to their delay. This is basically hell on earth. The place is unwieldingly large yet there are about 2 people working there. The signs really don't tell you where to go for anything and frequently lead you to literally nowhere. Seriously, I ended up in 2 different corners following the signs to pick up mail. Why was I picking up mail? Because this office seems to be failing on the 'postal service' part of its job. My package was shipped over a week ago, and somehow took that long to get to me. Supposedly the USPS came by on Monday, couldn't figure out how to get in my building (which is the ultimate fail, since they can certainly get in the building to access my mailbox), and thus my package went into USPS limbo. I entered the information for re-delivery online, but apparently that was sucked into a USPS vortex of failure, because they did not attempt to redeliver all week. It being Friday, and nearly 2 weeks since my package was shipped from within the continental United States, I decided it was time to take care of business. I wandered around aimlessly looking for the place to pick up my package. Finally I just got in line for the mailing packages line, and I was redirected to another line (which was fine, I knew I was in the wrong line). There was 1 person fetching packages. I didn't have the tracking number, which I know is annoying, but the USPS existed before tracking numbers. I think you guys can figure it out. She had me write down the name, and since the package was coming in my boyfriend's name, it had his name on it. She started to head back and then said "Wait, who's Roger?" and I answered. She said she can't get the package unless we're married AND have the same last name. WTF, USPS. When and if we ever make this thing legit (though I'm pretty sure we're common law married in the state of IL), I'm still not taking his last name. I understand security concerns, but I'm pretty sure she was just unwilling to fetch a package without a tracking number. Thanks for enforcing patriarchy everywhere, government! Why, oh why, does Yelp not allow for a zero-star rating? I have never in my life encountered the staggering level occupational incompetence on display at Loop Post Office. Chicago reportedly has the worst postal service in the country and I'm convinced the Loop Station is at the very bottom of that sad barrel. Packages marked priority mail never arrive on time. Don't be tempted by the person masquerading as a customer service agent, walking up and down the line. They will try and persuade you into using their automated shipping center (on both occasions where I did use the machine, packages marked priority 3-5 day shipping didn't arrive for 2 weeks). Additionally, if you're looking for stamps, you'll need to wait in line because the vending machines themselves are never stocked. And speaking of the line, it's simply a marvel of the world. At peak times, a handful of windows have tellers available (perhaps four out of the available 25+). These tellers will answer your questions but if you pay to have a package shipped and the teller, for example, has to retrieve something (e.g. a stamp to stamp your delivery confirmation slip), they will take at least 15 minutes to return. During trips to this post office, while waiting for such a task to be completed, I have heard conversations about All My Children plot lines, fruit salad and which decal to have applied during a scheduled pedicure (the daisy or the heart? No the star!). Last but not least is the process of picking up a package. You will wait in line until this particular teller is ready to acknowledge you. You might want to bring an iPod or a web-enabled mobile phone because this can take some time. When you politely tell her that you'd like to pick up your package, you will be berated and demeaned for your stupidity. Why would you dare trust anything the person on the phone told you? The package is on the truck for redelivery! Well you should never call and ask a question because the people on the phone have no idea what they're talking about and, by the way, you're an idiot for not bringing me their name. The Loop Postal Station continuously fails to meet even the lowest level expectations and should be avoided at all costs. I would rather pay my taxes, have a root canal or bathe in a vat of asphalt before using them. That I'm willing to drive 15+ miles to Rosemont for a pleasant post office experience is a sad statement. read more

A black hole in the loop- you toss in your time, patience, money, packages, letters and nothing comes out... well maybe you receive spiteful bitterness, hate, trashiness, and a headache. This place will always ruin your day. 5 years of the worst experiences from living next door and working in the building: Your packages will 'disappear' if they don't like you or think it's valuable from the insurance you take out on it, and they will re-appear only when you call the postal service and initiate a formal investigation. (The incredibly nasty woman who did this is the woman who weighs over 500 pounds). They won't answer the phone They won't get off their chair to check on something for you They close early They will make you stand in line for 30 minutes with 15 other people while they joke with each other and cut their friends to the front of the line, IGNORING EVERYONE ELSE. Of 3 people working at the counters only one will take customers- THE OTHERS WILL PURPOSELY NOT EVEN LOOK UP WHEN YOU POSE GENTILE POLITE QUESTIONS (like 'excuse me where can I find a priority envelope?' since they're always out of stock) They won't stock supplies for priority / express shipping and when you ask them to look in the back they will REFUSE with the excuse "Dey probably ain't none back dere", not even lying to say for sure that there are none. IF THEY THINK YOUR REQUEST IS TOO MUCH WORK, EVEN AFTER WAITING A HALF AN HOUR AT THE FRONT OF THE LINE, THEY WILL TELL YOU THEY ARE CLOSED AND TELL YOU TO LEAVE OR HAVE SECURITY CALLED ON YOU They actually called security on me when this final event happened, because I asked why it was like being on Jerry Springer every time I walked inside. 5 people walked out with me in disgust. They told the next person to step up after they had told me at the counter they were closed! Even security is sick of them. They are a disgrace to the USPS and the United States Government. Wish I could give this horror show of a post office a rating of negative 1,000,000 The staff are rude, incompetent and inefficient. This is a mammoth space that is so severely under-utilized it could be called Kafkaesque. The newest wrinkle is the addition of the most mean-spirited postal worker I've encountered who 'monitors' every single self-service kiosk. She pulled me aside today and forced me to add more postage to a large envelope I was mailing, because she said 'this is a package, not an envelope.' There was a SASE inside, which she accused me of 'lying on that zip code' to pay less postage (not true). There are never any USPS supplies in stock (boxes, insurance forms, etc.), never more than two people at the service windows, and usually a long line of people waiting an eternity to mail a package. I've heard rumors that this particular location may be shut down. Do it sooner than later. It's a waste of space and taxpayer money. read more
