I am officially obsessed with this spot! Every dish I tried was packed with flavor, and you can tell everything is made with such high-quality ingredients. I started with the Honey Walnut Shrimp, and honestly, I've never had it better, the shrimp were massive, perfectly crispy, and that glaze was the perfect level of sweet without being heavy. I also dove into the Pan-Fried Pork Dumplings, which had that incredible golden crunch on the bottom while staying so juicy on the inside. I couldn't get enough of the Eggplant Tofu; the texture was buttery and the sauce had just the right amount of kick. I also tried the Salt and Pepper Shrimp, which were seasoned perfectly and had a great snap to them. Of course, I had to get the Xiao Long Bao (Soup Dumplings), the broth inside was so rich and savory, it's a total must-order. To round it all out, I had the Szechuan Chili Oil Wontons, which had a fantastic heat that didn't overpower the delicate wontons, and the Garlic Baby Bok Choy was the perfect fresh, crisp side to balance out the meal. While the food was the star of the show, I found the service to be a bit hit-or-miss. I felt like I had to flag someone down a few times for ordering more food, and things moved at a pretty slow pace. Came here at the recommendation of someone else, and while I was skeptical at first, I am now a believer! We went on a Sunday for lunch--4 adults and a baby. The staff was incredibly kind and accommodating. For those wondering, they do have high chairs there, so thats a plus in my book already! I'm not sure why I've never seen this place be featured on any social media platform. They have some of the best food I've ever had! Stopped by on a whim as I was in the area and was craving some dumplings. Note that they only have (free) street parking. It was pretty empty when we walked in so we were seated quickly and the staff was friendly. You are then handed a paper which serves as both their menu and your ordering ticket. We ended up ordering their cucumber salad, honey walnut shrimp, rice, wonton in chili oil, pork steam soup dumplings, pork crispy deep fried dumplings, and garlic spareribs. Out of everything I ordered, I think the cucumber salad was mid. Everything else was so comforting and delicious. I'm sure I ordered way too much food for 2 people, but that left us with some delicious leftovers! The honey walnut shrimp is to die for!!!! With the abundance of Asian places in Portland (yay!) this spot has quickly risen to be one of my favorites. 5/5 - cucumber salad has lots of flavor, garlic and a really big portion 5/5 - egg soup. I ordered a lot with the idea of having leftovers for my partner and I to eat this week when we don't have much time to cook. I got: Shrimp har gow (comes with 4) Pork shumai (comes with 4) Kung pao chicken dumplings (comes with 6) Steam veggie dumplings (comes with 8 - only thing I wouldn't order again) Salt & pepper tofu (lots of onion! yum!) I had read a review complaining about the service, but the young woman who served us was great -- fast, attentive, and even thoughtful enough to bring water for our pup. It was my first visit and wow. The service is sparkling! The people are nice, informative and knowledgeable. The seating is long tables, like family style. It wasn't crowded so we were by ourselves. So I'm going to refrain from commenting on the dumplings as I think it would be an unfair review. XLB is meant to be eaten immediately after serving, not a half hour car ride home. For those who work 12hr shifts or get off at 7:30pm, this place was a HIT! Not a lot of options when you're looking for a place to eat, especially after work. Since it was only down the road- we were able to find a quick spot to park and walk in. It wasn't super busy. Lots of big seating options and there's also the bar section as well. We were greeted and provided with a menu where you write down what you want to order. Almost like din tai fung, but the portions were much larger and worth every penny! I didn't get to take a picture of all the food. We definitely should have asked how big the portions were because we ordered as if we were eating at DTF. We got to try a variety of things which was nice. XLB - nice subtle broth to it. Curry dumplings - nothing too special, just their dumplings with a Japanese curry on top Sweet heat dumplings - has to be my next fave here. We were debating between this and the chili oil one, but settled with this one and was not disappointed. Definitely sweet when you take that first bite and then followed by a nice hint of heat. The dumplings are handmade in house, I witnessed it :) Their filling is good--it is tender, not dense or hard, and not full of vegetable filler. Dumpling skin is also good, not too thick. Sautéed string beans were hot, delicious, and crispy. Good portion. The reason I took off a star is because 1) pan fried dumplings were not very fried, in fact, I thought they were steamed until I remembered we'd ordered pan fried! Everything is made in house; the whole time I was there there was an employee sitting there making dumplings for the dinner service. My server was plesent and showed up at the right times. I was initially concerned when I came in because there were no other customers at what should have been the start of the lunch rush. No other customers came in during my meal. My server said that most people come for dinner. When my meal came all my concern was allayed because it was delicious. I stumbled upon Hengry Dumpling House while being in the area. I wanted something light for lunch and stopped by here. I ordered some pork soup dumplings (pork xiaolongbao) and chive and pork steam dumplings. I like that they have a variety of dumpling styles and fillings to choose from. The soup dumplings and the steamed dumplings were good. Everything came out hot, the dumpling skin on the dumplings were perfect thickness, and nice amount of filling. They offer soy sauce, black vinegar and chili oil for dipping. The host was very attentive and checked in often if I needed anything and how the meal was. This restaurant is a nice addition to the Williams district and I know down the street there is XLB. However, the menu at Hengry Dumpling House is a bit more extensive. It's similar to Din Tai Fung and Dough Zone. Definitely a small family run business. It's a good location and the interior is nice. For parking there is street parking or in the nearby neighborhoods. Service was good, got our food in a reasonable amount of time. The MIDS: - Curry dumplings were a little disappointing, I was expecting dumplings with curry filling but it was just regular dumplings on top of curry. - Popcorn chicken has been a little inconsistent in the few times I've went. The 1st time the chicken chunks were pretty large, but subsequent visits they were smaller and there was too MUCH breading. Great handmade dumpling and noodles here, better than XLB I say. You mark your choices on a paper menu and hand that in. I've tried a couple of their handmade dumplings and noodle dishes all of which I've liked, but they offer a bunch of other dumplings (not all handmade) and a few other little bites as well. The sweet heat and Kung pao dumplings were probly my fav, the skin is not too doughy and they are properly filled. They're steamed and finished with a pan fry on one side to add a little crispness while still being soft. The wonton noodle soup was as good as I've had anywhere w/ a generous portion of wontons. I also tried the tan tan noodles which were thinner, dry style noodles in a light Sichuan pepper oil sauce that had a mild but pleasant spicy peppercorn tang. It seems like a pretty small crew, and i could see the older lady making the dumplings by hand at one of the tables while I was there. Also, everything was very reasonably priced. They also have soup dumplings here too, so if deciding between here and nearby XLB I'd choose here. The only thing I wasn't the biggest fan of was the scallion pancakes - they were a bit too fried and greasy for me, I prefer the thinner, battered Korean style w/ more scallions and veggies (but I may be partial as a Korean). And the salt & pepper wings were just meh. But still 5 stars for me, and I still want to go back to try the basil & fish dumplings. read more

In my view a five-star rating is reserved for a place that I always, always try to go to whenever I'm in a particular city. There are specific dishes that seem unique to certain restaurants that are almost impossible to find in other cities and also very difficult to make at home. Their curry pork dumplings have made the list as far as unique dishes, and everything else I've had here has been excellent. My vegetarian wife also likes the place a lot so if it can please both a hard-core carnivore *and* a vegetarian, so much the better. In terms of dumplings, this place blows Din Tai Fung out of the water. I'd put this place at close to the level of Dumpling Time in SF which is still my all-time favorite (so far). One thing, though - if you arrive half an hour before closing, they might try to turn you away. However, I've found that if you plead your case ("we are visiting from out of town and drove miles just to come here!") then they will let you in, as long as you promise to be fast about ordering. This has actually happened - twice - in terms of arriving half an hour before closing time (which is really early). read more

We asked later and they said they don't have enough for all yet but hope to soon. The flavors were good of all dishes but they didn't indicate the spicy toppings on the green beans. I was able to pick out some on the edge. Husband liked the spicy popcorn chicken and said the toppings on the green beans were similar. Casual atmosphere and best to bundle up on a cold day as it was a bit cold inside. Nice to have an XLB option on the East side but prices are still comparable to DTF or Dough Zone so I may still opt to drive across the river and know my XLBs won't be broken. The glass of water, plates, and cutlery was simplistic and pleasant. Special kudos to the host handling the front of the establishment. When other customers came in to pick up an order, she would offer them a seat and water while they finished packing up their to-go order. She definitely brightened the place up with her demeanor and friendly customer service! I received my order of the crab soup dumplings first. The soup itself was delicious, but the amount of soup felt lacking and I desired a more pronounced seafood/crab flavor. The dumpling skin was slightly thicker in comparison to other dumpling restaurants. Next, my order of curry pork dumplings was served. The curry had a decent amount of spice and heat, with pieces of potatoes in the curry sauce. The sliced cucumbers added a refreshing contrast to cut through some of the spices. The pork dumplings itself were decent. The dumplings were well cooked but the pork filling flavor got overshadowed by the curry flavor. Then, the spicy popcorn chicken came out next. Recently went here with my husband. The inside was very neat and clean, the hostess was very nice, and the food was very yummy. My favorite was the steamed chicken dumplings (very simple and homey) and the tan tan noodles (good chew and taste). DISCRIMINATORY TREATMENT: While the food was good when I went to this restaurant, my sister and I have had an unacceptable experience with the service. We been to this restaurant with our parents before, and it was great food and a great experience. But as of today, that experience has changed. My sister went to Hengry with her three friends, all of whom were Black (herself included, as we are also a Black family), and they were told to pay beforehand instead of after receiving their food. This did not happen with us as a family, nor did it happen with others present in the restaurant. Upon observation, my sister and her friends realized they may have been treated that way because they were Black teenagers. When asking the waitress why they had to pay beforehand, she said they have "some people" pay before instead of after. That sort of language is not only intentional but definitely discriminatory, as they were clearly being stereotyped and treated as if they were going to dine and dash. As her older sister, I called the restaurant to formally address how my sister and her friends were treated. At first, the person I spoke with tried to say she asked my sister and her friends if they wanted to pay beforehand as an option because "some people want to pay first." But that was not how my sister and her friends were made to feel -- along with the fact that nobody else in the restaurant was "asked" or "given the option" to pay first. Soon after I respectfully tried to explain the reality -- that my sister and her friends were treated in a discriminatory way -- I was met with unnecessary defensiveness, three minutes of silence, a hostile attitude, being told to "just go ahead and sue," and finally a "f*** you, b**** bye bye" before they hung up in my face. If the situation was truly not intentional or discriminatory there should have been no reason I received the reaction and words I received as a customer RESPECTFULLY conveying an experience and advocating for my sister. I am a junior at Lewis & Clark College and a Jefferson alumna, where I was an outstanding student. My sister follows in my steps, also being an outstanding student at Jefferson. My sister and I work in Parks & Recreation and are involved in many other community and city wide organizations, boards, and committees -- all of which we will be letting our constituents know to NOT patronize this business. This is NOT how we should have been treated, and I can only hope others have not been made to feel this way or met with the level of disrespect and unprofessionalism I was met with today. We as a family will not be going there again, and if you consider yourself an ally, you should not either.
