A barbecue joint should have good Q. I stopped by for a quick sample, getting a barbecue sandwich and an iced tea. On the plus side, the sandwich was piled high with meat, a good value, but I was disappointed in the barbecue itself, which seemed a little dry and didn't have much flavor. I appreciated that you can choose between red and white slaw for your sandwich. I chose white, but it was too sweet for me. The iced tea was average, tasting more of sugar than of tea. Ambiance is fun, with little pig statues outside. I might have hit them on an off day, and perhaps their greasy spoon fare is worth checking out, but I likely won't be back. read more

The food at Hendrix is good. Not spectacular, but consistently good. The servings are substantial. The food rates four stars, but the additional star is for the exceptional service. The servers are very attentive and always smiling. Food is prepared quickly and arrives at the table hot from the kitchen. There is adequate staff to handle even the busiest times. read more

The Q is tasty and moist with plenty of genuine smoke flavor. The hush puppies have a hint of onion and sweetness (Mmmm-mmm) and the fries were fresh. The BBQ chicken had a nice flavor (check if you are going for this - it's only served on certain days). The mesquite chicken on salad greens was surprisingly sophisticated in flavor and happened to be one of about three salads I've ever eaten on which I enjoyed the flavor of the shredded cheese. I usually order "no cheese, please" on salads, but (happily) forgot. The space is large and plenty roomy. Our server was fast, friendly and brought all of our special requests with a smile. Ate here for years, know the owners...But got some wings one day & when I received them they were barely warm and VERY soft and gooey. And when we took them back the young lady got the cook who said he was Dana the owner son & that I was WRONG and he would redo the order of 18 wings because they were cooked, and as a matter of fact they were fully cooked from the factory!! Very dis-respectful, unprofessional and shocking to me as a customer of this place for years that he would have the gawd to be so rude in front of other customers. I know they come pre-cooked i'm not dumb. Point was they were soft, chilled and nasty. And only ate 2 of the order, 1 by me and one by my wife to make sure I wasn't loosing my mind! Never been treated like this by Richards nor College bar-b-q...We will go out of our way to drive to Salisbury rather then 2 miles down the road to their restaurant.. I went with the chix n dumplings w/ mixed greens, fried squash, and hushpups (4.95). added a BBQ sandwich (3.55) on the side. The chix n dumplings were really soft (but tasty) and small amount of meat; the sides were middle of the road; the hushpups have very good flavor- sweet and oniony. The BBQ sandwich was good coarse chop (without charging extra), the right amount of red slaw that does not over power the pork and the thin Lexington style sauce on the side. All-in-all a good lunch. The menu reads more like a regular restaurant than str8 BBQ spot. So if you want Q and others don't, there are plenty of other options. Don't let the 3 stars fool you, I will eat here again. We ate here while visiting the NC Transportation Museum. Very convenient. My wife and I sat at the counter which, in my opinion was the way to go for fast service. Visit this restaurant 3-4 times a week, staff and food is awesome. BUT, one offer they have is a drink, bbq sandwich and or footlong with a bag if chips for 5$. Not bad right? Well for some of us we have sensitive gums, and well you got of chips. So the owner is asked multiple visits to allow a snack size frie as a swap out and split the cost of 75cents total. But he says NO everytime! Now as a business degree recipient doing this to your locals is just a dumb move and basically rude and a slap in the face. I would go else where which I have started doing more and more lately, but being the closet restaurant for 5 miles or more its convenience. But more and more locals/family has started doing as I have and making that extra drive. Terrible business sense and one day making harsh but simple decisions to not making your locals happy, will come back and haunt you. read more

My husband ordered a bbq chicken plate and I ordered a bbq plate. The barbecue chicken came with coleslaw your choice of either red or white coleslaw, French fries which can be seasoned or not and hush puppies on the side with bread if you so choose. My plate was pulled pork, a small salad, french fries, coleslaw and hush puppies and bread on the side. It's all very reasonably priced and in my opinion way too much to eat. This is a pretty good place to eat. I loved that the kids ate free. Both had the hotdog plate and said they were yummy. I had the chicken finger plate. It was a lot of food as it came with fries, hushpupies, and slaw. I'm very picky about slaw, but this was delish! We came at around 2 pm on Saturday. We sat immediately and our hot food was out before we knew it! I gave it 4 stars because the hushpupies weren't even warm and my husband said he wasn't impressed with the bbq. My husband and I found this restaurant on Yelp while camping at a nearby park. We both order the BBQ chicken. My sides were potato salad and slaw and my husband got fries and slaw. They have an extensive list of daily sides to choose from also... Many southern favorites. We also had some hush puppies that came with our meal. I was worried the chicken may be dry but the waitress assured us it was juicy and flavorful. She gave us what they call "dip" to go with it which was some of the vinegar based BBQ sauce. It was outstanding and so were the sides. We also had some yummy tarter sauce to dip our hush puppies!! A sinful indulgence!! The waitress was so cute and friendly and made the whole lunch experience a great time. The place was hopping with locals but I felt right at home. The prices are easy on the wallet. I went to Hendrix BBQ after a visit to the North Carolina Transportation Museum and was not disappointed. A friend from Salisbury, NC had recommended it. I bought a plate of Chopped Pork BBQ, which alread had the sauce on it. This is mid-state BBQ, not the more vinegary type you find in other parts of NC. It already had the sauce in it, although I thought it needed a bit more. I also had a delicious side of collard greens, cooked well but not soggy. They had some pork in them, a good taste and didn't need any vinegar. I also had baked beans, which were very good with some onions in them. The sweet tea was top-notch. Freshly brewed, I thought. As mentioned in other reviews, the decor is 50s-diner, clean and neat and the service is VERY attentive. I couldn't have gone thirsty here if I had wanted to! read more

5 stars for service! I'd have to put a lid on my sweet tea to keep the waitresses from re-filling it every minute. Atmosphere is neat with 50's decor, keeping in mind this is a joint, nothing fancy. The bbq was good, 3.5 stars, but not necessarily memorable. Added sauce was nice and necessary and i'm into the finely chopped/pulled style. Red slaw was ok and beans were very good. Worth checking out and prices are very reasonable. I actually preferred the bbq to the very highly rated lexington bbq up the road. read more

Based on the opinion of 3 "Yelpers" - we stopped by Hendrix after our visit to the NC Transportation Museum. Always like visiting old diners - this one did not disappoint. So much on the wall that it kept our interest while we waited for our lunch. Service was spot on!
