Classic no frills burger & hot dog joint in the heart of downtown Salisbury! The staff couldn't be nicer, and you could tell they had several regulars coming in at lunchtime. I'm new to working in the area and wanted a hot dog for lunch. This place popped up on my Yelp search for hot dogs. To my surprise, I arrived to find a line waiting outside the door! I figured this had to be a good sign. There service area inside it very tiny and there is no seated dining area. There is a small counter area where you can stand and eat your food. And it was! I ordered the cheese dog with no onions. It was delicious, reminiscent of the homemade hotdogs that my grandmother use to make in the countryside of Louisiana. I honestly don't see what all the hype about this place is. Everyone said how good this place is so I tried it for the first time today and had high expectations so I drove 45 minutes to get there. I got a burger and was very disappointed. I do have to say it was fresh but didn't taste like a burger, more like meatloaf. Chili wasn't the greatest. As a Salisbury native, I will always be a fan of Haps. 9 times out of 10 they're going to have a line up the block, especially on a beautiful day. They're just a hole in the wall (literally) and have few spots to stand and eat inside, so most people eat outside, or take it to go! As far as food, you get few options (which I love) and I am a cheese dog with ketchup, mustard and light chili kind of girl. I typically would not eat onions (at all), but I LOVE this chili (it has onions). My husband always gets a cheese dog and 2 cheeseburgers. You also have got to get a glass cheerwine or cheerwine slushie. Now, be prepared for people to know you went to Haps for lunch, because that smell will follow you, but it is worth it. read more

Today was the perfect day to grab some lunch where we could stand outside and eat. Extremely simple concept and menu. It works so well! We ordered 2 hot dogs with chili and mustard and 1 cheeseburger all the way (mustard, chili & onions). The burger was nice and fresh and fit the bun perfectly so you get a burger and bread in every bite. The hot dogs were good and the mustard and chili complemented it well. This is old school place! I got two hotdogs but the burgers looked equally delicious. Cilli on the hotdogs was fantastic! Great flavor with a hint of hot. I've been going here since I can remember. They have the best burger's I can find. I'm In my late 20's and it's just everything you want in that diamond in the rough "hole in the wall". They're just the nicest people and love getting your food up and going as fast as they can work, they're amazing with the influx they get. Hap's is a Rowan County legend when it comes to greasy spoons. But like with so many legends, their better days are behind them and unfortunately, Hap's falls into that category. I'll probably catch some flak from the Salisbury faithful but I call them as I see (or taste) them. Hap's is located in downtown Salisbury. It is unique in the fact that there is NO SIT DOWN SERVICE. Menu consists of burgers hotdogs, chips and drinks. Nothing else. That's it. Period. You order at the counter and the burgers and dogs are cooked on a flat top grill in front of you. Service was very friendly. Once you get your order, you can take it to go or stand up and eat it inside or outside. But like I said, no table and chairs. Just a standup counter inside and two outside. I got a hot dog and hamburger all-the-way. I ate them outside. All the way is ketchup, mustard, onions, cheese and chili. Here is where the disappointment begins. Maybe my expectations were too high about this "legendary" eatery. I found the hot dog and hamburger disappointingly BLAND. I could take onion and mustard but the hot dog itself, chili and hamburger were void of flavor. They had substance but zero flavor. I love flavorful foods, Indian, Thai, Cajun and so on. Waiting in a line in 90 degree heat was not worth this by a long shot. I can think of a dozen local places with better burgers. Two stars: one for fast, friendly service and one for legendary status over the decades. Any other place would have been one star. Save your money. If you want to eat here because of the longevity of the business and novelty of their eating arrangements, go ahead. But don't say I didn't tell you so. read more

Haps Grill is a downtown Salisbury must try. You pull up and park on the street (you may have to circle a few times to find a spot). Get out and go stand in line. As you stand in line there is a delicious smell wafting out onto the street making your mouth water in anticipation of taking your first bite. The menu includes Hamburgers $3.50, Cheeseburgers $3.75, Hotdogs $2, and/or Cheese Dog $2.25. You can get them fixed the way you want with: cheese, chili, onion and/or mustard. Made a quick stop here on our way out of Charlotte. What a great choice! Hap's is your classic hole in the wall. Limited menu, cash pay, standing room only. The staff was so friendly! And the other patrons were locals who have been eating at Hap's for decades. We tried the burgers and hotdogs and both were perfect. The burger is a lightly packed patty, served "all the way" with onions, mustard and chili on a soft bun. I only ordered one, but I can easily see how people get their names on the wall for eating 5, 6, 7 or more! If we're ever passing through again, we will definitely stop again. read more

Don't know if it was just an off day or what but the two hot dogs I got, regular all the way, were so salty I could not eat even half of one. I tasted the 2nd one just to make sure. Since moving to Salisbury 2 years ago, this has been on my must try list. This past Saturday my husband & I got in the car & I was driving so I headed to downtown Salisbury with this place in mind. Looking for parking, we circled around & saw that the line was out the door at Hap's. Once in line we waited at least 20 minutes & watched as person after person piled out wearing a smile & with a greasy paper bag in hand & often a soda or Cheerwine slushy in the other. We each ordered a hot dog and a cheeseburger- all the way. There's not much more than that on the menu (I'm not complaining- except that I did experience a degree of disappointment in the realization that there are no french fries, but instead potato chips). I had my hot dog first. It was fine. It wasn't some crazy delicious, out of body experience... it was a hot dog. It was a steamed bun & a hot dog covered in chili- including the cooked onions, and mustard. The concept was there, I just really felt like something was missing... next time I think I'll ask for raw onions & extra mustard. My husband thought slaw would've been a good addition, I agree. The cheeseburger was actually the highlight, in my opinion. It bared a chargrilled kind of crisp. The meat is loosely bound, like the burger is almost fall apart. The cheese melted nicely- somehow still lacking slightly. I think this could be resolved with condiments, again fresh onions and mustard may give the boost I was searching for. I enjoyed the glass bottle Cheerwine- although I didn't think it was quite cold enough. My husband had the Cheerwine slushy. It wasn't bad, but seemed a little flat. Overall we enjoyed the experience & will be back in attempt to perfect the combination of condiments on these Salisbury classics. read more

Hap's Grill was featured in a recent issue of Our State in their "Hole in the Wall" edition. This is the second time that Our State has led me astray here recently. Hap's does not live up to the hype. I get the appeal. It has all of the makings of a place that I would love: small place, Cheerwine paraphernalia, neon sign out front, hot dogs and hamburgers cooked right in front of you and piled with chili. Unfortunately, the food just isn't that good. The place is very small and there is always a line out the door. There is no seating inside so I just grabbed a bench outside in Historic Salisbury. It was a great day, so that was not a problem. The ordering process is pretty quick and seamless. The employees were friendly and the food came out fast. I decided that I wanted to try both the hot dog and hamburger. I got both the hotdog and hamburger all the way. They piled on the chili which I was excited about. Unfortunately, this was the downfall. The chili was bland and added nothing to the meal. The hamburger itself was just not very good. It was overcooked and didn't have much flavor. I would consider the squished hot dog mediocre at best. The glass bottle Cheerwine that washed it down was the best thing about the meal. I give Hap's 3 stars because of the history and the nostalgia of the place. The service was great, but honestly the food was closer to 2 stars. I have heard rumors that this place has changed hands recently (I am not positive about this) and this may have something to do with it. In my personal opinion, this place serves the best burger and hot dog in town. Best preference is the "all the way" style. This establishment is a "cash only" establishment, so make sure you hit up the atm before you venture in. I love the fact that they serve glass cola bottles and Cheerwine Slushies. My only recommendation would be to add fries. I think hand cut fries paired with the amazing burgers would top it off! I love this place, the line can be long, but we'll worth the wait. I showed up at 1:45 on a Saturday and saw the line outside the door and got real excited. There are some places where you're just glad to stand in line and I thought this would be one of them. After working through the line, I ordered two hot dogs (chili and mustard) and a Cheerwine. $4.25 total. Not shabby right? The chili was certainly atypical for hot dog chili. Group beef, onions and seasoning. Not spicy. For me the dog was SEVERELY lacking cole slaw. With some slaw, this dog might have been 5 stars. The Cheerwine was delicious, as always.
