Ok, so part of me feels really sorry for this review. Listen, I enjoyed the hot dogs and the Cheerwine. I promise I did. I've just had better. I showed up at 1:45 on a Saturday and saw the line outside the door and got real excited. There are some places where you're just glad to stand in line and I thought this would be one of them. After working through the line, I ordered two hot dogs (chili and mustard) and a Cheerwine. $4.25 total. Not shabby right? The chili was certainly atypical for hot dog chili. Group beef, onions and seasoning. Not spicy. For me the dog was SEVERELY lacking cole slaw. With some slaw, this dog might have been 5 stars. The Cheerwine was delicious, as always. It's a small town eight food wide joint that's reminiscent of another time. Visiting here is tasty, but it's more about the experience. The bun warmer looks like it's been kicking around for over 30 years. Everything is made on a griddle right in front of you as you order. It's simply classic in here. Me and two of my friends travel once a month to a different city to try a new hot dog restaurant. We drove 6 1/2 hours one way to make it to Hap's. When we arrived we noticed these place was really small and they did not have any place to sit. This is one of those spots that the locals love and can't get enough of. I'm not that big of a fan of hotdogs, but I have to admit it was tasty. One of my employee's wanted to take me out to lunch one day and I know how much he makes, so I told him to keep it cheap. This was our spot. We each got 2 dogs with chili and RC cola's. It really hit the spot. I was surprised. I came in with a "just grin and say thanks attitude" as I have had to do at most of Salisbury's eateries, but I really enjoyed my dogs. Cute place...my mom had been here many times and my sister insists on coming when in town. I had never been until a few days ago... Grabbed a cheeseburger for myself and my child... Mine was no onions, his was all the way. Once we got to the car they very clearly both had onions...but we decided which one had less and I got that one (I can eat them, just prefer not to). Should've tried the Cheerwine or the slush but with it being rainy and cloudy didn't want to run back in to return the bottle and not really slush weather! I am a born and bred Southern Californian, home of the much-touted and well known, always crowded (and overrated, in my opinion) Pinks Hot Dog Stand. This place blows Pinks out of the water. I used to travel for work. I was sent to work in Salisbury, NC and when I discovered Hap's, it pretty much became my lunch spot for the two weeks I was there. I'm sure it wasn't the healthiest choice, but since I knew I might never be back there, I didn't care. It's simply a TINY lunch counter that serves hamburgers and hot dogs with the best darn chili I've ever had. I'd have one with either an ice cold bottle of Cheerwine (another North Carolina piece of amazingness I hadn't discovered before) or Root Beer. People are as nice as can be, it's incredibly inexpensive and the food is amazing. It'll never disappoint. If you're driving through this city or live near it and just haven't discovered it, you have to stop by Hap's. You won't regret it. read more

Chili Cheese Dog "All the Way" 4 Stars-"All the Way" here is mustard, chili, onions, hot dog, american cheese on a steamed bun. This is a meal in itself. Be careful. They serve this piping hot. Bring some cash (no-credit cards accepted).Don't be taken aback by the line, as it moves quickly due to the simple menu and speedy service. Their hot dogs, like I mentioned earlier, are delicious, and feature great house-made chili, and not Bunker Hill Chili sauce like a bunch of other establishments steep to. There were also several burgers on the flattop when I was there, but I was not interested, as they were being pressed and overcooked. I suggest staying away from these and going with the classic burger. And if you aren't from around here, here's your chance to get a Cheerwine, the refreshing and unique carbonated beverage made just down the road. They serve them in glass bottles here, which is the best way to consume the drink. Still the best hot dog I have ever had. I hadn't been back to Salisbury for years and Hap's was #1 on my list of places to visit. On a Saturday around noon the line-up went out the front door, as it should. We chatted with our neighbours in the queue, jealously glancing at the people eating on the one wooden table set up outside, and were quickly through the door. The menu hadn't changed. Hot dogs and burgers. With chili or without. Cheerwine in glass bottles. The soft buns. the crisp-skinned dogs. The chili, with ground beef and onion and just a little kick of spice. The mustard on top and nothing else. Nothing else is needed. We stood at the counted and ate our first Hap's dogs in a decade, beside the jukebox and underneath the plaques celebrating epic feats of hot dog consumption. I eat two dogs (all the way) and wash it down with an ice-cold Cheerwine. I think about coming back and seeing if I can get my name on one of those plaques. I don't know when I'll come back to Salisbury. I don't know when I'll have a Hap's hot dog again. But while I stand there at the counter licking the last bit of chili off my fingers everything is right in the world. read more

This place has some of the lowest quality food I've ever had at a "restaurant." The hot dogs are those tiny little firm chicken/mixed meat franks you get for a dollar a pack at Walmart, and everything is served on low end bleached flower/corn syrup mushy white buns straight from a plastic bag, not even toasted, with a side of potato chips in a bag, not even made there. I have no idea why locals love this place so much, and claim that it has "the best hot dogs in the state." I'd certainly hate to taste the worst! A real hot dog is beef, or German ones are pork. Most people here haven't even had a real one so I guess it's no surprise! This restaurant is not that old, so there's no real "historic authenticity" factor to excuse it for it being so bad, and the prices are way too high for this type of low end, nasty processed food. The hours are absolutely ridiculous too. Only open a couple hours a day, closed on Sundays. You can literally get better food at Cookout down the road 24 hours a day, or just go to Walmart and fire up your own grill at home. Even gas station hot dogs are better! Sad but true! read more
