About the best barbecue in Lexington area- worth the drive- I can't decide whether this or Lexington bbq is better, usually it's whichever I've had most recently read more

Meeting up with some old friends, we opted to head here for dinner and it was a brilliant choice. Lexington is a city very well known for barbecue, The Pig City. Tarheel Q is about 7 miles west of downtown so it's mostly locals dining here. Self-seating but warmly greeted and offered drinks, they are a Pepsi place and they also have sweet/Northern tea. Breakfast and lunch/dinner menus on the table and specials posted on the wall. I got the barbecue half-and-half plate which came with two sides. Chopped pork and a quarter barbecue chicken (I chose dark meat) with fries and potato salad plus hush puppies. It didn't take long to be plated up and brought out. Served hot, the pork was delicious. Moist, flavorful and not needing any sauce to bring out the flavor. Chicken was nicely done and came apart easily. Crinkle cut fries were crisp and hot. Potato salad was creamy. Huge portions, I could eat barely half of my plate. And then our waitress asked if we had saved room for dessert. Ha! Great service, great food, five stars! Four of us made our first visit to Tarheel BBQ and we were all very happy with the food, service, and the restaurant. It's a nice little place that has an extensive menu and outstanding food. The Peach Cobbler was excellent and the BBQ was worth the trip! The service was prompt and efficient. The prices are reasonable for the quantity of food and again, the food is quite tasty. The chopped pork barbecue and white slaw was some of the best I've had in Lexington, NC. Hotdogs here are excellent too. However, the peach cobbler was served cold, like refrigerated cold. Maybe I should have asked for it to be heated? I just assumed most peach cobblers are served warm. The corn nuggets tasted overcooked, or reheated. Service was average. We didn't see our waitress back until I went to the counter and asked for my peach cobbler and she brought it. Bottom line... excellent pork barbecue, slaw, and hotdogs. A few months ago I would have given 5 stars but recently no way. Ordered a chopped BBQ sandwich and fries. The BBQ was full of fat and gristle, I ate mostly bun and slaw with dip. Recently ordered a cheeseburger without chili well guess what it had chili on it. I scraped off what I good but was still not good I don't kniw what has happened but not the same as a few months ago. The waitresses never come back to see if I need anything, but I have noticed that if a man is seated they continuously check on them. The times that I am in there they are not busy and it's usually at dinner time. It seems like it has gone downhill since Tonya left---she was the best Tonight is my last visit there. read more

Tarheel Q has amazing food, their bbq is flavorful and it pairs well with the slaw. Their fries are seasoned well and their desserts are delicious! When we came in there was only one waitress but she still performed amazing service and was kicking butt! It's one of those small town resturaunts that reminds you of home cooking. I have had a long history with Tarheel Q and it had been some time since I have been there. Tonight I stopped to pick up a Take Out order and I arrived early and was waiting and I observed the kitchen staff and waitresses. The young men in the back were diligently working and making every effort to double check the orders they packed, and were being pro-active seeing needs and taking care of things. I was beyond impressed with their efforts and their work ethic and complimenting them to the cashier. It was refreshing to see such great service as I waited and watching the whole staff working and being so friendly even in a very busy time of the day. They are to be commended for their Team Work and How they pulled together to offer a most positive dining experience for those they serve. read more

Stopped today after passing it a few times on the Spyder. Well, it was not very busy the chopped barbeque wrapped and not even on a plate. Food was okay nothing to write home about. A friend and I were on a work outing which took longer than expected. Coming back on route 64, we decided to stop in to Tarheel Q for a late lunch. It was about 2:30 and we had the place to ourselves. This place does a good lunch crowd but like I said, it was 2:30 and those folks were long gone. Anyway, our server greeted us as we walked in and we had a seat in a booth. Our server was super friendly and knowledgeable about the menu items. Our drinks were quickly brought or the table and our food orders were taken. I opted for the barbecue salad with blue cheese dressing on the side. My buddy got the meatloaf special with macaroni and cheese and fried okra. The food didn't take long to be in front of us. My barbecue salad was HUGE. It was piled high with delicious pulled pork atop and wonderful salad of lettuce, cukes, tomatoes, onions, pickles and cheese. I'm a pretty big guy and was wondering if I could handle this salad mountain. The pork was juicy and delicious. One of the best barbecue salads I've had. The vegetables were fresh and crisp. What more could you ask for? My buddy's meal was equally impressive. A huge portion of meatloaf and an overflowing helping of HOMEMADE macaroni and cheese. I emphasize HOMEMADE. Not the premade or boxed crap you get at so many places. The fried okra was also fresh and delicious. We were both stuffed. They have a display case full of homemade pies and cakes. We were both too full to partake but that leaves us something to look forward to next trip. The meal came to about $16 for both of us and that's not bad in today's world of eating out. The food was great and so was the service. If you've never eaten here before, give them a try. It's worth a little trip out of your way. read more

Tarheel Q is a BBQ restaurant located in a rural part of Davidson County, right on highway 64. Just right across the Davie County line (over the river). I have been here multiple times since my first review. The food here is really good. Service is even better. I mainly get the chopped BBQ plate, but the daily specials are very tempting. This is traditional Lexington BBQ. The sauce is already on the pork when you get it. They will give you more sauce on the side. The sides are traditional (fries, slaw, hushpuppies, okra, green beens, etc.). They have more than BBQ on the menu, including daily specials. They do take cash, cards and even Apple Pay. Highly recommend. read more

We are staying nearby at Thousand Trails campground and are so happy we found this great place! We've eaten here twice already and look forward to trying it for breakfast. Bbq the brisket was good. Had the picnic special. Service was great, people were great, ambiance was right there what you expect from a bbq place. But the Cole slaw was different not the traditional style but an ok taste. The potato salad no, better from the reasors mass produce. The beans were beans. The wings fried and about 2 minutes over done but least they were dry. So when comes to bbq and every southern knows it is about the the sauce as well. Well this mark is missed, thank for not putting in on because we had back up. Also prefer to just buy by the pound of what we want not by the plate or "platter". Sandwiches at good but really sell by the pound. No onions or pickles. Probably will not be back. Not Oklahoma bbq! Price was not bad. Did I miss the ribs on the menu? read more

My wife and I were debating dinner this evening. We decided to try the wings at Tarheel Q in Lexington, NC since it is right down the road from where we are staying. Called and ordered wings, fries and hush puppies to pick up. Walked in- small place with 8 or 10 tables and a counter. Have to say- the wings were AMAZING! The fries and hush puppies were just as delicious! Service was extremely polite, pleasant and quick. I will not hesitate to visit again. I only have one down-side to mention. I called in the order based on the menu on their website. The "in store" menu pricing is different- but I understand that costs have gone up. Acceptable and understandable. Turns out the prices have not yet been updated there so it ended up 7 or 8 dollars more than expected. But still worth the price. Give 'em a try, folks- you won't be disappointed. read more

We use to live to come here since their food was always good. However the last few times we went the service was horrible. From never being waited on during one trip to never getting refills on our drinks. Last trip the waitress came took our drink order asked if we needed a minute, we said yes only she never came back. So we got up and paid for our drinks for her to say how was everything. She didn't even remember she never actually took our order. Terrible service. All they want to do is stand around talking or they are on their own phones. read more

I got the spaghetti special one day but after I seen them getting the cooked spaghetti out of a big container type box , I wished I hadn't but that's the reason the noodle were not good and fresh tasting but we have ate there twice. read more

I wasn't very impressed with this location. I'd heard a lot about it. I felt like everything had sugar in it. The barbecue did not have any wood smoke taste to it whatsoever. Service was very Slack, and I sat right in front of the counter. I came here right at closing and didn't realize they closed right at 8:00 p.m. Felt like all they cared about was their regulars. Won't stop here again. I go by here all the time, but I'm definitely not losing anything by not stopping here. I have been to other barbecue places like this in the past they try to use sugar on everything. I will tell you don't work for me, Jack. It's probably the worst barbecue place in this area. I had never been here but it was on my way to Asheville. Have it a try and I wish I had not. Fries had to be thrown away they were cold hard and salty so absolutely salty. Hamburger was ok. Hot dog was ok except bread what hard like it had been microwaved wayyyy to long. I understand businesses being busy but every order and customer should count. The inside was outdated or so I say some people may say it's just a good ole boy country bbq place and I do mean good ole boy. It's definitely not big on diversity. Wait staff spoke but no smiles but that's ok they were not mean or rude just not happy to be there or so busy they couldn't remember to smile. Only reason I gave it 2 stars is the cook in the back with the long beard and hat, tattoos was easy on the eyes. It had a little fat, but not enough to be an issue. The sauce was very good & it was served warm which was such a treat. It didn't cool the Q when used. I had the combo special; bbq chicken & pork bbq. The bbq chicken was great. The skin wasn't crisp so I removed the meat beneath had a nice smoke ring. It was moist, tender & Smokey. read more

This little place continues to be worth the drive - especially on the weekends when they offer up great BBQ Chicken. This is not the typical barbecued chicken, baked and slathered in a sweet, tomato based sauce - rather, it is cooked over wood, in half a chicken portion, and sauced with a nice vinegar based barbecue sauce, much like the barbecue. It is very tender, moist, nearly falling off the bone - and the sauce seals the deal. Now, that Whitley's is gone, it may be the best of breed. On this trip I tried the Chopped BBQ Tray with "Outside Brown" included - outstanding. The brown bits give the pork a nice touch of crunch in the texture which is a nice contrast to the incredibly tender inside meat, and some nice flavor change in the taste happens to. The Hushpuppies are very good, nice little crunchy logs, and the Chili Dog is nice, once a little mustard is dabbed off. This is a very good Lexington style BBQ joint - this is one of those times when you could add half a star to the rating - but I'll remember it anyway. read more
