This place is an entire vibe, and I am here for it. It is exactly the waterfront experience I had been looking for. I absolutely loved overlooking the Marina on a gorgeous day. The drinks were fun and tropical and surprisingly strong. The menu appears small, but solid. It was hard to choose because there were so many appetizing options. I ended up having a "snack" of the smoked wings as my entree. They are SO delicious. I'm still thinking about them. The pickles are absolutely worth getting and so fresh and crisp. The hushpuppies are good, but not at all sweet. This is something you should be aware of as it might come as a surprise. Our kids usually love hushpuppies, but weren't fans - more for me! I've worked in F&B majority of my life and cannot understand why a restaurant would have a NY strip on the menu and not allow you to order it Medium Rare. It's a 65 steak. Why can I not order it a temperature I want? If your staff is not skilled enough to cook steaks to temp or you don't have adequate equipment, take it off the menu. So I went from ordering a 65 meal to a 18 shrimp taco dish. Make that make sense from a business standpoint. And yes the server even went back to ask the Chef, and they still said no. I love the mid century decor here! I came on a weeknight and unfortunately the patio was closed due to a private party having rented it out. I made a reservation for indoors instead. My friend and I enjoyed a cola tail and hush puppies. The cocktails range from 10-13$. The hush puppies were delicious and served hot- perfect for a chilly fall evening. I had the crab salad. It was good but the huge chunks of citrus fruit threw off my taste buds a little bit. I wish there was also more crab in the salad- but I know that stuff is expensive! This was a great dining experience! I had a reservation for 8 so no issues being seated promptly. Our server was very polite and efficient despite it appearing to be a fairly busy afternoon. The server was very attentive as he noted allergies within our group, politely explained menu items and checked on the table frequently (not annoyingly so --- there's a thin line!). My group was seated outdoors and everything was perfect. Initially I was hesitant about the menu items, partially because the menu selection seemed limited, but it was also due to my unfamiliarity with some of the items. However, I selected Miso BBQ smoked chicken breast cumin roasted carrots cilantro labneh and was VERY pleased. Additionally I pretty much sampled most of everyone else's in my group's dishes and everything was really good. The irony is...the food definitely is not a 5, and they seem to not be concerned with a culture of continuous improvement. The food was ok--but nothing remarkable. Solid--but tired and no heart. This is one of those places that gets away with having mediocre food because of it's great location. Don't get me wrong, the food isn't bad. It just isn't something good enough to make me want to come back. The view and location however, does make me want to go back. If they had great food as well I would probably make the 50 minute drive on a regular basis. So as I said, the view of the water is great. The service is actually pretty good as well. The drinks are fine and they have a cute little tiki bar area that I am going to try to sit at next time I come. The food menu is fairly boring and mostly seafood. I don't eat seafood but I don't count any of this against them because they are a waterfront restaurant and seafood is pretty much expected. Had an absolutely amazing experience. I was visiting for the first time from out-of-state. The wait staff was so kind and even let us switch tables after we were seated to get out of the sun. I have an extreme sesame allergy so the staff created a menu crossing out all the food items I couldn't have, which is a huge lifesaver! Our server Ben was the nicest server I've had in years. I live in Charlotte half the year, and always come to Hello Sailor at least two or three times each time. I love the view, and the menu, which has something for everyone. This time I brought a friend who had never been here and we both ordered one of my favorites, the Crab Louis salad. This time it was a total disappointment. For $24, we were each given a very very large bowl of greens with dressing, a segment or two of orange and grapefruit, a nice piece of avocado, one egg, and some shredded crab somewhere in those lettuce leaves, but rarely seen. I would have expected a visible portion of crab louie, so we knew we had received what we ordered. I would describe this as a $24 bowl of greens, with a few condiments, and maybe somewhere in that bowl, some shreds of crab. A real disappointment. The first person we told, said that was the way it has always been served and that there is a substantial portion of crab flakes in the salad. He disappeared with no further comment. The second person we told, the new manager, was very nice, thoughtful, took our salads away, offered to bring us anything else, and did get us some coffee. (The only decaf was in the office downstairs-but he was very sweet to get me a cup). He comped our salads, which we appreciated. Our waitress was not warm or attentive-we waited a long time to be waited on other than drinks--had to ask another waitress to get our waitress--but she took our orders and was lovely and helpful, and the new manager was very good. But the crab louie? I would not recommend unless you want a VERY large portion of lettuce for $24. I expect this restaurant group, who also bring us Kindred, another favorite, to do better or to take this option off the menu. read more

We went on a pretty overcast day, but I know that if it was a sunny day, the view of the lake would be amazing. This is a family friendly restaurant. This means they really need to fix the back door of the upper outside eating area. It leads down to the dock, and when a bunch of kids are running in and out, letting the door slam because the springs need fixed, it gets old pretty fast. Which leads to my next suggestion, if they're not going to fix the door, then, move the tables away from the door, but, just fix the door. While our specific server had a pretty flat affect during our visit, the other staff seemed friendly. A flat affect when telling customers that they're not allowed to make any additions to the food -I asked if I could get onions on the burger-just doesn't land well. Yes, I said that you can't add anything to their dishes. It's a pretty light menu, so, the chef is always going to be pretty familiar with the food, but, you can't add onions to your burger? I ended up getting the wedge because I was there, it was a guest's pick for their birthday, and I was hungry. The wedge was really good and fresh, though the bacon was kind of hard to chew. They could use another ranch option because it was pretty flavorless, as were the chicken tenders, though the wedge typically comes with bleu cheese. Yes, you can choose your dressing. The trout caught the eye of other guests at another table, and my guest said it was really good and well cooked. My husband had the Buffalo crispy chicken sandwich and enjoyed it , and another guest had the Buffalo shrimp. She said they were a little too wet, but good. The beef fat fries were good as are the grandfathers pickles. I didn't care for the hush puppies too much, but, I could appreciate that they were savory-the first savory ones I've had since moving to NC. All others have been somewhat sweet. In the location that was formerly the Rusty Rudder. I made a reservation about a week in advance for a Saturday lunch for 2. We arrived on time and there were 3 people at the host desk, each with an iPad. We were asked if we would prefer inside or out on the patio. We both had some questions about the menu and then ordered, Maresa had the Absolute Burger, which was actually vegan. I had the pan seated Flounder which was very good! We shared the watermelon salad which had a nice blend of sweet and tart. The place was surprisingly busy for lunch time on a Saturday. It was very loud and made if very difficult to have a conversation. I really wish we had gotten an outside table. This has been on my list to try for a while, but we don't come to the Lake Norman area all that often. We were driving back from Cleveland and thought it would be a good chance to stop and try it. We got the popcorn shrimp and the hot chicken sandwich with the hamachi crudo as an appetizer. The popcorn shrimp was absolutely amazing. The pickle brine was so good. The fries were very good as well. The chicken sandwich was pretty good. I liked the crispier parts, but the fat part in the middle was a little dry. The topping and sauce for the hamachi crudo was good, but the fish wasn't very good. Covid-19: you can order and pay over the phone, but it's not the most ideal. There's a sample menu online that I used, but it's not necessarily the same as their menu for that day. You can't order ahead for a specific time, so be ready to pick it up 20-30 minutes from when you order. You also have to come in to get your takeout. Normally, I don't mind this too much, but this was the most crowded restaurant I've seen since this started so that made me uncomfortable (tables were spaced apart, but they were completely full). It seems like they definitely aren't catering to takeout right now. It was the first place we got take out from that didn't provide any silverware or napkins. We took it to Jetton Park nearby and had fun trying to eat the hamachi crudo with our hands. They also asked what side I wanted with my sandwich and I said coleslaw but got fries. This wouldn't be my top choice for takeout, but they do have some good food, so it would be good to try dine in. read more

We were immediately greeted once we sat down and it took all of 10-15 mins before we sat down to when we received our food. I ordered the fish and chips and a frozen watermelon margarita. The fish was fried well but was definitely a lunch portion. The margarita was the loss of a star, it tasted like tequila and water without a hint of watermelon. My friend requested a different drink altogether and it was recommended that she tried a spritzer drink; however, it too lacked balance of a crafted drink.
